Abstract:

Abstract:
1013 Background: Recently, we have confirmed that HAGE is involved in promoting proliferation as assessed by increased thymidine incorporation and our preliminary results using shRNA to permanently knockdown HAGE expression also suggests the involvement of HAGE in tumor motility and metastasis. In this study we aimed to analyze the expression of HAGE in large well-characterized BC cohorts to determine its relationship with other clinico-pathological parameters and to investigate its prognostic value. Methods: HAGE protein expression was assessed in: a) 40 normal breast tissue (NBT), b) 60 invasive BCs and their matching NBT, c) BC cell lines, d) A series of 1650 consecutive cases of primary BC who treated with adjuvant CMF and/or endocrine therapies. Further validation was performed in 2 independent series of high risk ER- BC: a) 300 ER –BC who did not received any CT and b) 396 ER- BC treated with adjuvant anthracycline (ATC) based CT. Results: The NBT showed negative HAGE expression (HAGE-) throughout. HAGE overexpression (HAGE+) was observed in 10% of BC and was significantly associated with aggressive clinico-pathological features including: ER-, high grade and triple negative phenotypes. Moreover, HAGE+ expression showed an adverse outcome with a 2-4 fold increase in the risk of death, recurrence and metastases (ps<0.00001) compared to HAGE-; ps<0.0001. Using a multivariate Cox regression model including ER status, grade, size and tumour stage, HAGE expression was confirmed as a powerful independent prognostic factor (p<0.0001). The poor clinical outcome of HAGE+ was further confirmed in high risk (NPI>3.4) ER- patients who did not received any CT (p<0.0001). While, adjuvant CT either CMF or ATC had a positive impact on HAGE+/high risk ER- BC as HAGE+ had a similar risk of death, recurrence and distant metastases to HAGE- expression. Conclusions: This is the first report which shows HAGE to be a potential predictor for poor prognosis in BC patients, and may be an attractive novel target for molecular and vaccine therapy for those patients. A prospective trial of adjuvant chemotherapy/vaccine to confirm this finding is warranted.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to prepare a management plan for the future nature reserve Helges hage in Eksta, Gotland. The area has a long continuity as a woodland and has been used as pasture and for selective logging. This type of forestry practices creates a dynamic, heterogeneous landscape with a rich biodiversity. In Helges hage many unusual soil fungi and two endangered grass species have been found. Grazed woodlands is one of the habitats that has decreased most in Sweden the last century as a result of the modern forestry. Helges hage has not been grazed since the 1960 and the forest understory is now overgrown by shrubs and saplings. In order to preserve the natural values of a grazed woodland it is required to reintroduce grazing and that parts of the forest is thinned in order to create a less dense forest with more light reaching the ground.

Full text
Abstract:

Mourad, Fatima. "Anti-Systemic Departures in Lebanese-Canadian Writing: Mouawad and Hage." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41259.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the antisystemic writing of Wajdi Mouawad and Rawi Hage, two of the most compelling authors to emerge out of the Lebanese-Canadian diaspora. In their Canadian setting, the writers’ politics of unbelonging serves a countercultural purpose by rearticulating the race, class, and gender disparities eschewed in multicultural discourse. As writers of a growing Lebanese diaspora, they recall the collective injuries sustained during the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) and which remain underexamined by Lebanese society and government. In this way, Mouawad and Hage assume a subversive position in both the Lebanese and the Canadian contexts by reinscribing histories and experiences that risk erasure. In my analysis of Mouawad’s play Scorched and Mouawad’s novels De Niro’s Game and Cockroach, the differential allocation of precarity and grievability proves the common thread that runs through all three texts. Mouawad and Hage’s representation of their character’s disproportionate exposure to harm and suffering coincides with the broader claims of antisystemic politics. My intervention brackets these texts’ thematic concerns with the critical theories that best explain some of Mouawad and Hage’s more radical depictions of immigrants under duress.

Abstract:

This paper deals with archaeological prospecting for the purpose of finding a prehistoric settlement in Alsike hage, Alsike parish, Uppland. The methods being used are soil phosphate analysis, electromagnetic survey and settlement analysis. Two 20x20 meters areas have been prospected. As Alsike hage contains several late Iron Age burial fields, large splendid zones for settlement location, closeness to water as well as farmland there was a hope of locating remains of prehistoric settlement in the area. None of the prospected areas showed any distinct evidence of settlement remains. Still, the results showed anomalies in both areas, both in the electromagnetic survey as in the phosphate analysis. Therefore, the possibility of finding such remains in the two prospected areas cannot be ruled out.

Abstract:
Size is one of the most controversial influencing factors in the diffusion literature. Some authors argue that large firms have several advantages over smaller firms in the adoption of an innovation (Brown 1981), while others argue that diffusion of innovation in small firms is quicker than in large firms because of the advantages associated with small size (Acs & Audretsh, 1988; Julien, 1993; Lefebvre & Le-febvre, 1993; Riding, 1993). However, the controversy on the impact of size on diffusion of innovation has been further complicated by the mixed results of the studies investigating the relationship between size as an influential factor and diffusion of innovation (Aiken, et al., 1980; Blau & McKinley, 1979; Booth & Giacobbe, 1998; Damanpour, 1992; Dewar & Dutton, 1986; Hage, 1980; Krumwiede, 1998; Libby & Waterhouse, 1996). Shedding light on this controversy, this paper examines the relationship between business size and the diffusion of both technological innovation and activity based costing (ABC) through a longitudinal study in a single industry.

Abstract:
It has been shown by our group that B-FXIIa-inhibi-tion was reduced in platelet rich plasma. To investigate the effect of heparin on B-FXIIa-inhibition, kallikrein inhibition and C1-esterase inhibition high and low molecular weight heparin preparations were added to plasma samples. Using high molecular weight heparin from 0 to 5 anti Xa/ml a reduction in B-FXIIa-inhibition was seen from 103% to 59%.These effects were abolished by the addition of protamine chloride. No changes of kallikrein inhibition and C1-esterase-inhibition were observed in heparinized plasma samples After the addition of a low molecular heparin preparation to plasma samples, the reduction of B-FXIIa-inhibition was markedly decreased. The levels of the Hage-man fragment inhibitor capacity were lowered to 22% compared to initial values of 91%. The antagonization of heparin normalized these values. No reduction in kallikrein inhibition and C1-esterase inhibition were found in these samples because in all three assays C1-inhibitor activity is analysed, purified C1-inhibitor was added to buffer containing several heparin concentration ( see table )These results suggest that the inhibition of B-FXIIa is markedly affected by heparin whilst no changes were seen in the inhibition capacity for C1-esterase and kallikrein.

Hage, Ilige S., Mu'tasem A. Shehadeh, and Ramsey F. Hamade. "Application of Homogenization Theory to Study the Mechanics of Cortical Bone." In ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2014-36427.

Full text
Abstract:
Homogenization theory is utilized to study the effect on the axial stiffness of secondary osteons in cortical bone due to the presence of micro porous features (e.g., lacunae, canaliculi clusters, and Haversian canals). Specifically, 2 geometric characteristics were used to describe these features within the secondary osteons: volume fraction (% porosity) and shape (circular- or elliptical-shaped). Such information was determined for each individual porous feature from an image segmentation methodology developed earlier by Hage and Hamade. For each feature, aspect ratio vectors (or arrays of ratios for each individual porous feature) were used to classify each pore inhomogeneity as cylindrical, elliptical or irregular shape. Two prominent homogenization theories were used: the Mori-Tanaka (MT) and the generalized self-consistent method (GSCM). Using the results of image segmentation, it was possible to calculate the respective Eshelby tensors of each porous feature. To calculate the isotropic stiffness tensors for matrix (Cm) and pores (Cp) the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio for the matrix (Em, νm) were assigned as obtained from literature and as those of blood (Ep=10MPa, νp= 0.3), respectively. The effective elastic stiffness tensors (C*) for the secondary osteons were obtained from which axial Young’s modulus was obtained as function of volume fraction (% porosity) of each pore type and their individual shapes. The normalized axial Young’s modulus was found to 1) significantly decrease with increasing volume fraction (%) of porosity and 2) for the same % porosity, to slightly decrease (increase) with increasing ratio of circular-shaped to elliptical-shaped (elliptical-shaped to circular-shaped) porous features. These findings were validated using experimental micro-indentation study performed on secondary osteons.
