Abstract:
The aim of this study was to prepare a management plan for the future nature reserve Helges hage in Eksta, Gotland. The area has a long continuity as a woodland and has been used as pasture and for selective logging. This type of forestry practices creates a dynamic, heterogeneous landscape with a rich biodiversity. In Helges hage many unusual soil fungi and two endangered grass species have been found. Grazed woodlands is one of the habitats that has decreased most in Sweden the last century as a result of the modern forestry. Helges hage has not been grazed since the 1960 and the forest understory is now overgrown by shrubs and saplings. In order to preserve the natural values of a grazed woodland it is required to reintroduce grazing and that parts of the forest is thinned in order to create a less dense forest with more light reaching the ground.

Rizvanovic, Alisa. "Förslag till skötselplan för Seths hage." Thesis, Halmstad University, School of Business and Engineering (SET), 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-2633.

Abstract:

Mourad, Fatima. "Anti-Systemic Departures in Lebanese-Canadian Writing: Mouawad and Hage." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41259.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the antisystemic writing of Wajdi Mouawad and Rawi Hage, two of the most compelling authors to emerge out of the Lebanese-Canadian diaspora. In their Canadian setting, the writers’ politics of unbelonging serves a countercultural purpose by rearticulating the race, class, and gender disparities eschewed in multicultural discourse. As writers of a growing Lebanese diaspora, they recall the collective injuries sustained during the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) and which remain underexamined by Lebanese society and government. In this way, Mouawad and Hage assume a subversive position in both the Lebanese and the Canadian contexts by reinscribing histories and experiences that risk erasure. In my analysis of Mouawad’s play Scorched and Mouawad’s novels De Niro’s Game and Cockroach, the differential allocation of precarity and grievability proves the common thread that runs through all three texts. Mouawad and Hage’s representation of their character’s disproportionate exposure to harm and suffering coincides with the broader claims of antisystemic politics. My intervention brackets these texts’ thematic concerns with the critical theories that best explain some of Mouawad and Hage’s more radical depictions of immigrants under duress.

Abstract:

This paper deals with archaeological prospecting for the purpose of finding a prehistoric settlement in Alsike hage, Alsike parish, Uppland. The methods being used are soil phosphate analysis, electromagnetic survey and settlement analysis. Two 20x20 meters areas have been prospected. As Alsike hage contains several late Iron Age burial fields, large splendid zones for settlement location, closeness to water as well as farmland there was a hope of locating remains of prehistoric settlement in the area. None of the prospected areas showed any distinct evidence of settlement remains. Still, the results showed anomalies in both areas, both in the electromagnetic survey as in the phosphate analysis. Therefore, the possibility of finding such remains in the two prospected areas cannot be ruled out.

Osborne, Marilyn Huebener. "The Changing Isolation of the Outsider: A Time-based Analysis of Four Canadian Immigrant Writers." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24062.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses four Canadian immigrant English-language prose writers in order to identify commonalities and differences in their literary representations of the immigrant experience over time. While origin and ethnicity factored in the selection of writers so as to ensure diversity, the primary selection criterion was to obtain a significant historical range, from the 1830s to the present. The writers selected are: Susanna Moodie, an immigrant from England in the mid-19th century; John Marlyn, an immigrant from Hungary in the early-20th century; Michael Ondaatje, an immigrant from Sri Lanka via England in the mid-20th century; and Rawi Hage, an immigrant from Lebanon via the US in the late-20th century. I conclude that there are significant similarities among the works of all four writers, generally attributable to their shared experience of being immigrants, and equally significant areas of divergence, generally attributable to the development of Canada, with Moodie and Marlyn on one side of an important watershed in the mid-1950s, and Ondaatje and Hage on the other. All four write extensively of the experience of the immigrant with a fundamental similarity in their depiction of isolation, non-belonging and dislocation. Over time, the representations of isolation have become more complex, mirroring the increasing diversity and complexity of Canadian society. The mid-1950s shift in Canadian immigration policy from preferred British, US, and Northern European immigration to multinational immigration has resulted in increased diversity of both the Canadian immigrant population and Canadian literature. While the environment of the immigrant to Canada changes, one constant has been and is likely to continue to be a sense of dislocation, non-belonging and isolation, of being an uninvited outsider, or survenant. Canadian literature has reflected this reality consistently for almost 200 years and will no doubt continue to do so.

Mathieu, Morgan G. "HAGE, a novel cancer/testis antigen with strong potential as a target for immunotherapy against cancers." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2007. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/33/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since van der Bruggen et al. (1991) first identified specific human tumour antigens of the MAGE family, numerous potential immunotherapeutic targets have been discovered, often belonging to the so-called cancer/testis (CT) gene family. In a search for novel epitopes from potential tumour target antigens, HAGE, a CT antigen, has been studied. It was first identified in a sarcoma and has since been reported in several carcinomas and leukaemias at the mRNA level only. This study proposed to investigate HAGE as a potential target for immunotherapy in a murine tumour model. HAGE mRNA was found to be expressed in a small proportion of carcinomas, some melanomas and in a strong proportion of chronic myeloid leukaemias as compared to normal tissues, which do not express HAGE with the exception of testis. HAGE protein levels were also confirmed on tissue sections and in cell lines in order to rule out any post-transcriptional modifications. Furthermore, HAGE has been previously described as member of the DEAD-box family of ATP-dependent RNA helicases but very little is known about its actual function. RNA helicases are involved in various steps of RNA metabolism and their over-expression has often been linked with tumorogenesis. Using a combination of silencing and transfection experiments, HAGE was proven to be critical for tumour cell proliferation. Next, the identification of candidate MHC class I and class II immunogenic peptides derived from the HAGE protein was undertaken by combining reverse immunology with the use of HLA transgenic mice. Four HLA-A2 peptides were found to be immunogenic in C57BL/6-HHDII mice with one of them being also naturally processed. Four HLA-DR1/-DR4 peptides were defined as immunogenic in FVB/N-DR1 and C57BL/6-DR4 mice with two of them being also endogenously processed. The discovery of three novel HAGE-derived epitopes may then contribute to the range of immunotherapeutic targets for use in cancer vaccination programs. Finally, potent DNA-based vaccination strategies targeting HAGE were evaluated in an in vivo tumour model developed in HHDII-DR1, double transgenic mice. HAGE DNA vaccination by either gene gun or intra-muscular injection led to tumour protection and/or clearance in immunised animals. Also, the use of co-stimulatory molecules to boost the immune response induced by HAGE DNA vaccination was studied in a therapeutic setup and B7.2 appeared to be the most promising one. However, further work is needed to improve this tumour model and assess other methods of vaccination such as syngeneic dendritic cell-based vaccination or viral vaccination and the use of Semliki Forest virus. Collectively, these data demonstrate that HAGE represents a valid candidate target for several cancers and should maybe be included in future immunotherapeutic design.

Abstract:
Increased knowledge into the molecular pathways disrupted in tumours has led to the development of various therapies that can target specific mediators of these cascades. Such therapies have proven successful in patients or demonstrate significant potential for clinical use. However, this better understanding is undermined by the continued prevalence of cancer and the limitations of these drugs. Therefore, it is possible signalling networks could be influenced by as yet unknown molecules or known mediators with function that have not yet been described. As a result of this, work must continue to improve knowledge yet further to allow the design of novel therapies to aid in the treatment of cancer patients. In the present study, work was performed on the helicase antigen (HAGE), a cancer/testis (CT) antigen and DEAD-box protein found to be present in numerous types of malignancy. As with the majority of CT antigens, the role of HAGE remains unclear. In this instance, studies were carried to discover the function of HAGE in malignant cells. Preliminary in vitro proliferation studies following HAGE gene knockdown or cDNA transfection strongly indicated an association between HAGE expression and increased tumour cell proliferation. This was supported by results gained from in vivo work performed within an immuno-compromised murine model. Expression profiling analysis of data gained from using the Genechip oligonucleotide microarray platform found significant changes to genes linked not only with proliferation but other cell processes altered during tumorigenesis. Confirmation using real-time qPCR suggested change in expression of certain genes could be recognised in other HAGE-expressing tumour cell lines. This analysis also indicated a possible interaction between HAGE and the oncogene N-RAS. Subsequent genetic and protein studies implicated HAGE acting upstream of N-RAS, markedly increasing the N-RAS level in cells. Very preliminary work has begun to demonstrate a role not just in proliferation, but in immune escape, apoptosis inhibition and metastasis, all processes potentially influenced by the RAS oncogenes. The data presented here strongly supports the hypothesis of HAGE having a significant role in malignant biology and warrant continued investigation to further confirm its role in cancer and possibly use as a target for malignancy in the future.

Abstract:

This essay deals with the results and observations made during excavations in an iron age cemetery in Alsike hage, located in Alsike parish. The excavations took place in 2005 and 2006 and the investigated area comprised two adjacent, but secluded burial-constructions; a square stone setting with a secondary grave, and a stone-built terrace with at least one secondary grave. The artifacts suggests that the TPQ of the stone setting, and the construction date of the rest of the graves, is 900-950 A.D. The aim of this study was to comprehend the course of events in the investigated area, and to

analyse the archaeological finds - in comparison to the well documented an discussed material burial culture in the lake Mälar area – in order to discuss indicators of gender and social status.

Metal artefacts has been preserved as a part of the analysis.

Nagarajan, Divya. "Towards the development of HAGE-based vaccines for the treatment of patients with triple negative breast cancers." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2018. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/34884/.

Full text
Abstract:
Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease with many subtypes mostly identified based on expressions of oestrogen, progesterone, and/or epidermal growth factor receptors (or) none at all (also known as triple negative breast cancer, TNBC). TNBC account for 15-20% of all breast cancer and is the most aggressive subtype with a higher rate of local and distant metastasis and resistance to therapy which leads to frequent recurrences. TNBC treatment therefore rely mainly on neoadjuvant, surgery and/or radiotherapy. The level of immune infiltrate in TNBC has been linked to a more favourable outcome and lower mutation and neoantigen counts, indicating that an active immune surveillance is ongoing and that these patients might benefit from checkpoint inhibitor therapy. However, patients who did not display high level of immune infiltrate or whose disease and come back after conventional treatment, antigen-specific vaccine might provide a new method of treatment. The design of cancer vaccines need to take into consideration the choice of the antigen to be used in the vaccine (its expression pattern of the antigen by the tumour cells versus normal cells, its importance for the survival of the cancer cell, and its immunogenicity) as well as the delivery and adjuvant used in combination with the antigen. The cancer-testis antigen HAGE (DDX43, CT13) has been shown to be expressed in 43% of patients with TNBC, is not expressed by normal cells of vital organs, is required for the proliferation of cancer cells and is immunogenic. Therefore, patients with HAGE positive tumours might benefit from a HAGE-specific vaccine. This work has investigated the immunogenicity of two HAGE-derived sequences, has assessed the effect of several adjuvants as well as compared peptide HAGE 30mer versus DNA-HAGE vaccine in the form of Immunobody® and has assessed the anti-tumor efficiency of the best HAGE-derived vaccine. HAGE-derived 24 and 30-amino-acid long peptide using IFA as adjuvant were compared in the HHDII/DR1 transgenic mice. Based on peptide-specific immune responses determined using an IFNγ ELISpot assay, HAGE-30mer vaccine was found to be superior to the 24mer sequence as determined by high number of IFNɣ released against shorter vaccine-derived peptides. Range of adjuvants such as IFA, CpG, IRX-2, were administered either alone or in combination with HAGE 30mer peptide vaccine. The best responses were found to be generated by HAGE 30mer formulations containing IFA+CpG and IFA+IRX-2. Since mode of delivery influences the nature and strength of immune responses, a DNA based vaccine was assessed in this study called Immunobody®. ImmunoBody® encodes a human antibody with antigen inserted within the Complementarity-Determining Regions (CDR). HAGE-Immunobody® generated strong anti-HAGE immune responses, as demonstrated by the significant increase in the number of IFNγ secreting splenocytes. Moreover, splenocytes from vaccinated mice stimulated in vitro could recognise and specifically respond to HAGE+ tumour cells, including MDA-MB-231. This response was both HAGE and T cell-specific. More importantly the tumour growth of B16 cells (knockout for β2microglobulin and transfected with HHDII, HLA-DR1, Luciferin and HAGE constructs) was significantly slowed down by ImmunoBody®-HAGE vaccine. Overall, this work has demonstrated the potential value of HAGE-derived vaccines for the treatment HAGE positive cancers. Future studies will combine the vaccine with immune-checkpoint inhibitors.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This paper deals with the connection between food and burial habits during the late Iron Age in present-day Sweden. The archaeological material used in the study consists of 16 potsherds from a burial site at Alsike hage, Alsike parish, in the province of Uppland in east-central Sweden. On these potsherds have been conducted FTIR- and GCMS-analyses, in order to see what types of food have been deposited in the burials. Furthermore, the result of the GCMS-analyses has been compared to contemporary material from both burial sites and settlement sites, in order to establish whether differences between the compared materials exist. The analyses show that there are differences between the material from burial sites compared with the material from settlement sites, but not any particular differences between the material from different burial sites. Among these differences we can see that the settlement sites show: a higher amount of total lipid content, a higher amount of vessels which contained lipids indicating that food was heated in them, a higher amount of vessels which contained lipids from crop products as the only content, and a higher amount of vessels which contained lipids from ruminant animals. The interpretation of these results is also discussed in the paper. Furthermore, the results of the FTIR-analyses also shows a good correlation with the results from the GCMS-analyses, it seems that the organic “foodcrusts” analysed with FTIR indeed stem from the same meal indicated by the GCMS-analyses.

Abstract:
The potential of Pacific hake (Merluccius productus), which occur in Pacific north east waters, for human consumption is of interest because the biomass of the fish is known to be of significant size. However, this resource has not been fully exploited by the local fishing industry. The presence of Myxosporean parasite spores in the fish muscle is thought to cause a soft cooked fish texture, thus giving rise to problems in processing and affecting the marketability of the fish product. Studies were conducted on the textural properties of Pacific hake from two different fishing areas with different postharvest handling treatments. Fish samples from the Strait of Georgia and from offshore waters west of Vancouver Island were obtained from commercial sources. The west coast offshore hake samples were obtained in frozen form. They were thawed, filleted, vacuum-packed in barrier bags and refrozen for storage at -29°C. Two batches of fish chilled in refrigerated sea water were available from Georgia Strait. One of these batches was frozen immediately when received and subsequently processed similar to the west coast samples, whereas the other batch was chilled in ice for 1-3 days after landing while the fish were progressively processed into fillets for frozen storage at -29°C. The presence and types of species of Myxosporean parasite spores in fish fillets were determined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The fillets were grouped according to the level of infection in terms of the numbers of parasite spores determined by wet mount microscopic examination. Traditional Millian theory posits that free speech is the most important mechanism to achieve a greater tolerance of difference and thus create a dynamic marketplace for truth to flourish. In responding to maledictive hate, theorists such as Gelber (2002) and Butler (1997) have recommended that marginalized speech actors engage with a process of speaking back, of returning the gaze to make perpetrators¿ contributions to the marketplace of ideas marginal and aberrant. However, as will be demonstrated by an analysis of maledictive force and effects, the ideal speech situations of communicative action theory, and the recasting of terms of abuse by ¿speaking back¿, require both rational speech actors ¿something clearly absent in many acts of maledictive hate¿and an institutional validation of the authenticity of marginalized subjects and their speech. Constructing new truths in the marketplace of ideas is both socially and politically contingent. As such, the capacity for marginalized subjects to contribute to the marketplace rests on their ability to be able to speak with authority and to be authorized to speak.

This is a cultural anthropological study of The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), or the Hare Krishna movement. Data for this research derive primarily from ethnographic participant-observation, and include tape-recorded interviews with Hare Krishna informants as well as ISKCON literature collected during fieldwork. -- Analysis focuses on Hare Krishna techniques (saddhana, or yoga) of religious transformation, including physical, aesthetic, and discursive practices involved in the pursuit of spiritual realisation in ISKCON. Conversion, mimesis, and translation are the three key conceptual themes which inform a critical analysis of the production and effect of cultural difference in Hare Krishna spiritual practice. Ethnicity and conversion emerge as parallel concerns as the involvement of diasporic Indian and Indo-Fijian Hindus at the congregational level of ISKCON's ministry in Sydney, Australia, is examined for its effect on Western converts' experiences of Krishna Consciousness. A new conceptual approach to the meaning of 'conversion' to ISKCON is developed from this account. -- Recent sectarian developments in ISKCON's relationship with the Indian tradition of Gaudiya-Vaisnavism are also examined within a comparative theological framework. Hagiographic practices surrounding ISKCON's Bengali founder, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977), and textual practices surrounding the founder's translations of Vaisnavite scripture, are both analysed as core features of Hare Krishna spirituality. The theological significance of these practices is directly correlated with recent sectarian tensions between ISKCON and the Indian tradition.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScAgric)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cape hake (Merluccius capensis and M. paradoxus) is commercially the most important trawl-caught fish off the South African, coastline and due to current intensive fish processing procedures Cape hake contributes the most to the total fishwaste production. Besides its commercial importance fish is also regarded as one of the single most important consumable natural resources, either in the raw or frozen form. Most of South Africa's commercially trawled demersal fish has already been partially cleaned (i.e. headed and gutted) before landing with non-marketable bycatch and hake-waste normally disposed of as discards, resulting in a waste of a potential protein source. This study was thus aimed at fulfilling several objectives namely: observing the current large-scale commercial Cape hake harvesting procedure; constructing prediction models for several morphological parameters (whole hake mass, headed & gutted hake mass, hake head mass, hake head length, hake head breadth and hake head height) of Cape hake (Merluccius ssp.), using whole hake length as the independent variable; and determining the chemical composition (moisture, protein, fat, ash, macro and trace elements) of several hake head sections (clean head, neck flesh, tongue, tongue cartilage, jaw, gills, heart, intestines, gut, kidney, kidney & kidney bone and gut & gall); determining the effect that storage has on the fatty acid profile of both the clean head and neck flesh sections. The results obtained would supply necessary data required for techno-economic investigations in the use of hake heads. For each of the six prediction models constructed, there was an increase in the variance of the data points of categories 3 (64-80 cm) and 4 (>80 cm) as opposed to categories 1 (30-46 cm) and 2 (47-63 cm). This could be attributed to a smaller sample set for both categories 3 and 4 or due to an expected increase in the variance when investigating larger biological samples. There was also a clustering of data in the three areas for each prediction model namely, within category 1 and across categories 2 and 3 and 3 and 4. This emphasised the latitudinal stratification of the Cape hake population by age, hence their stratification by size. The prediction models constructed for both boat trips 2 and 3 differed significantly (p<0.01) from that of boat trip 1, with the exception of the hake head length (cm) prediction model. The constructed prediction models, for each of the three respective boat trips, showed good predictive abilities as was indicated by the low Mean Square Error (MSE) values for the test sets, and high Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) values. These prediction models can be used in the fishing industry with confidence for Cape hake within the time frame each respective boat trip was carried out. The neck flesh could be regarded as the most important concerning chemical composition whereas the jaw could be seen as the most important when one considers mineral content. This therefore means that the jaw section, once appropriately processed is a potential Ca, Na and Fe source for supplementing diets of people suffering from a Ca, Na or Fe deficient diet. With regard to chemical status the neck flesh section is seen as a good potential source of both protein and fat, which could be attributed to the fact that hake muscle constitutes a major portion of this section. This section could thus be used to supplement the protein and fat of an existing food product, which is protein and fat deficient for people suffering from a protein and fat deficient diet. Similarly, a market could be created for the production of an economical food product with the neck flesh section being the main ingredient. Once this have been accomplished, fishing vessels may be persuaded to retain their Cape hake fish-waste for further processing due to the value of the prepared food products and thereby maintain profitability while abiding to governmental law. In conclusion non-government scientists should have more input in the decision-making process concerning matters affecting South Africa's marine biodiversity in order for future key policy and legislation drafts to be effective. Improvement of current fish preservation techniques and the known chemical composition of currently discarded material will result in informed decisions of future matters concerning its disposal.

Abstract:
Criminal Justice
Ph.D.
The purpose of this dissertation is to employ simulation modeling to test theories of group formation as they pertain to hate groups: groups whose hate ideology may or may not condone violent criminal behavior. As of 2010, there were 1002 hate groups known to be active in the United States. Previous examinations of hate groups have assumed formation. This dissertation uses simulation modeling to test Hamm's (2004) criminological theory of collective hate and Weber's (1947) socio-political theory of charismatic leadership. Simulation modeling is designed to create a computer simulation that simplifies people and their interactions to mimic a real world event or phenomena. Three different experiments were tested using five models of hate group formation. These experiments test the importance of personal and societal levels of hate in group formation and the influence of charismatic leadership. These experiments also tested hypotheses regarding the number of groups that form, the speed of formation and group size. Data to test these hypotheses was collected from fifteen thousand model iterations. All three models successfully generated hate groups. Hate groups were generated at all levels of societal hate. An in-depth understanding of how hate groups form may assist in slowing the proliferation of these groups and decreasing their appeal.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present work is to study the correlation between the gas production rates and heliocentric magnitudes of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), in the pre-perihelion phase as well as in the post-perihelion phase. The evolutions of magnitudes and gas production rates of H2O (water), OH (hydroxil radical) and CO (carbon monoxide), along the approach to and leave of the comet from the Sun, are analyzed. For this analysis, we used 11,734 visual magnitude estimates, extracted from ICQ (International Comet Quarterly) and 88 observations of carbon monoxide (Biver, private communication (2007); DiSanti et al. (2001); Jewitt et al. (1996)), covering the range of heliocentric distances from rh = 7.464 AU (in the pre-perihelion phase) to rh = 14.070 AU (in the post-perihelion phase). It is shown that the activity of Hale-Bopp (average surface temperature ~ 110 K) beyond 6.3 AU from the Sun is controlled by CO emission (sublimation temperature ~ 24 K) rather than by H2O (sublimation temperature ~ 152 K). This result is consistent with millimeter-wave observations of Biver et al. (1996) and Jewitt et al. (1996), made at 6.5 AU.
