Abstract:

Abstract:
1013 Background: Recently, we have confirmed that HAGE is involved in promoting proliferation as assessed by increased thymidine incorporation and our preliminary results using shRNA to permanently knockdown HAGE expression also suggests the involvement of HAGE in tumor motility and metastasis. In this study we aimed to analyze the expression of HAGE in large well-characterized BC cohorts to determine its relationship with other clinico-pathological parameters and to investigate its prognostic value. Methods: HAGE protein expression was assessed in: a) 40 normal breast tissue (NBT), b) 60 invasive BCs and their matching NBT, c) BC cell lines, d) A series of 1650 consecutive cases of primary BC who treated with adjuvant CMF and/or endocrine therapies. Further validation was performed in 2 independent series of high risk ER- BC: a) 300 ER –BC who did not received any CT and b) 396 ER- BC treated with adjuvant anthracycline (ATC) based CT. Results: The NBT showed negative HAGE expression (HAGE-) throughout. HAGE overexpression (HAGE+) was observed in 10% of BC and was significantly associated with aggressive clinico-pathological features including: ER-, high grade and triple negative phenotypes. Moreover, HAGE+ expression showed an adverse outcome with a 2-4 fold increase in the risk of death, recurrence and metastases (ps<0.00001) compared to HAGE-; ps<0.0001. Using a multivariate Cox regression model including ER status, grade, size and tumour stage, HAGE expression was confirmed as a powerful independent prognostic factor (p<0.0001). The poor clinical outcome of HAGE+ was further confirmed in high risk (NPI>3.4) ER- patients who did not received any CT (p<0.0001). While, adjuvant CT either CMF or ATC had a positive impact on HAGE+/high risk ER- BC as HAGE+ had a similar risk of death, recurrence and distant metastases to HAGE- expression. Conclusions: This is the first report which shows HAGE to be a potential predictor for poor prognosis in BC patients, and may be an attractive novel target for molecular and vaccine therapy for those patients. A prospective trial of adjuvant chemotherapy/vaccine to confirm this finding is warranted.

Abstract:
Abstract Although in the early-modern period The Hague was not officially a city, its identity was based on specifically urban features. During the 17th and 18th century, its ambiguous status was explored by the authors of verse urban encomia and prose descriptiones urbium. In this article, the presentation of The Hague will be first discussed on the example of Caspar Barlaeus’ Latin poem “Haga”, and Constantijn Huygens’ Dutch encomium “’s Gravenhage” from the Dorpen [Villages] cycle of epigrams. Then, the image of The Hague will be examined in the context of an allegorical representation by Jan Caspar Philips in Jacob de Riemer’s Beschryving van ‘s Graven-hage [Description of The Hague, 1730]. The concluding remarks address the question of how the transformation of the status of The Hague undertaken by these writers and artists may be understood in the context of the literary-historical geography of the Northern Renaissance which has been a special subject of research by Professor Andrzej Borowski.

Abstract:
Under the influence of Calvinism, the musical situation in the Protestant churches in the Netherlands was for a long time marked by sobriety, with attention focused on congregational singing. In the 20th century, church music gained importance through a dominant flow of Lutheran influence. Generally, the liturgical movement highlighted the role of music in worship. The Lutheran church musician Willem Mudde successfully called attention to the German church music reform movement. Inspired by the writings of the German theologian Oskar Söhngen, he strived to apply the ideals and practices of this German movement to the Dutch Protestant churches. He succeeded through his zeal and organisational skills, not only in the Lutheran church but also in other Protestant churches. The idealistic character and educational aims of the movement, however, could not offset the growing individualism and the ongoing crisis in the churches.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction. Character assassination, a timeless weapon Character assassination is the deliberate destruction of an individual’s reputation or credibility. While the term itself is relatively new, the practices it describes can be found in virtually all cultures and historical epochs. Despite their great variety, character attacks share five common aspects or pillars: they involve an attacker, a target, a medium, an audience and they take place in a particular cultural, political and technological context. In recent times there has been a surge in scholarship on character assassination from a range of academic disciplines, including political science, rhetoric and communication studies. This thematic issue will explore the historical dimensions of character assassination and the challenges and opportunities that come with it. It will focus in particular on the role that various media – ranging from Roman histories and medieval chronicles to nineteenth-century cartoons – have played in shaping practices of character assassination throughout the ages.

Treba li to uopće raditi?

Abstract:
<p>The article discusses representations of time and space in the frescoes in the garden room of Empress Livia's villa at Prima Porta, near Rome. The frescoes, dated to ca 30–20 B.C., decorates an underground chamber in a vast villa-complex and show an "impossible garden" in that its vegetation is simultaneously and continuously flowering, without any realistic connection to time. Through analysis of the vegetation's spatial organization, the representation of birds and the chamber's placement in the villa-complex, the article examines the significance of the garden, be it real or imaginary, as an arena for instilling and expressing Roman civic values and duties. It addresses the potential relevance of the villa's imperial connection and questions whether the frescoes are to be read as expressions of "art of the state" or "state of the art".</p>

Exploring the concept of ethnographic vacillation which Hage identifies as a “state of constant movement between political participation and analytical observation” (Hage 2009), this paper aims at tackling the following questions: how does one write the (political) emotions into one’s ethnographic work? Should one do that at all? When does one stop being an engaged anthropologist and become a political activist with some knowledge of anthropology? And furthermore, to what extent should anthropologists even get engaged with the politics? In an attempt to answer these questions, I will critically examine my own position as an engaged anthropologist turned politician, following the notion that when one’s solely observant participation reaches a point at which the anthropologist deems it as - not enough, (s)he is welcome and often obliged to engage.

Aim: To evaluate the prognostic value of pretreatment prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Materials & methods: We conducted a retrospective study on prognostic value of PNI in NPC patients. A new prognostic marker was explored based on risk stratification with PNI and age. Results: PNI and age were two independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression free survival besides node stage and clinical stage. Low prognostic nutritional index and high age (LPNI–HAge) was identified as an independent prognostic factor for both OS (p < 0.001) and progression free survival (p = 0.008), which has a better predict value than sole PNI or age. Conclusion: The novel prognosis index LPNI-HAge provides prognostication of OS and progression free survival for NPC patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy plus concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

Current readings of Cora Sandel’s Alberta-trilogy (1926-1939) frequently tend to reuse the novels’ imagery in their own descriptive and interpretive statements – instead of treating this characteristic of the novels with the same degree of attention as, e.g., the trilogy’s psychological and political aspects, or its narrative technique. The present article attempts to draw attention to the trilogy’s imagery as a both autonomous and integral element in Cora Sandel’s novelistic art. Three metaphorical ways of thought which show their presence throughout the trilogy, are singled out: In the novels, the persons (and thus, implicitly or explicitly, the human condition) are frequently pictured as being situated on the high sea, in a garden or in a theatre. In the Alberta-trilogy, these time-honoured metaphors are the object of a refined practice of re-contextualization. In my attempt to trace this process, I draw special attention to the relationship between these metaphorical fields and the trilogy’s pervasive use of thermal imagery. In each case, I attempt to show that the thermal descriptions that are associated with the metaphorical views of human existence as a boat trip, a garden sojourn or a theatre performance have a central function in Cora Sandel’s use of these images.
