Leite, Guanaes de Miranda Daniel. "Prosperity and the worship of achievement : a theological analysis of cultural tensions within Brazilian Neopentecostalism." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2015. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=229390.

Full text
Abstract:
Neopentecostalism is currently one of the most expressive religious phenomena in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Census Institute's database (IBGE), Neopentecostals represent the fastest growing movement among Protestants in the country. Brazilian Neopentecostalism has some unique aspects that distinguish its member churches from the mainline denominations. Since its birth, the most significant difference has been its commitment to Prosperity Theology. Lately, however, a new constituency has developed within Neopentecostalism: the Brazilian Apostolic Movement. Like other Neopentecostal churches, they have the Prosperity Gospel as their theological grounding. On the other hand, however, they differ from other Neopentecostal churches by having an apostle as their leader. The aim of this work is to investigate the Brazilian Apostolic Movement in order to comprehend its culture and identity. The study will demonstrate that, believing that Christians should be healthy and wealthy, Brazilian Apostolic Movement leaders speak and preach in a way that resembles what psychoanalysis calls narcissism. Consciously or not, the movement risks contributing to the establishment of a Christian narcissistic culture – similar to the concept of cultural narcissism, developed by Christopher Lasch. That being the case, the study explores how Christian theology might respond to this reality. Is it possible for a Christian community to have narcissistic patterns as a key element of its identity? To respond to that question, I draw from the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His book, The Cost of Discipleship, focuses particularly on Christian life and ethics, and approaches these issues by through the lens of an intense reflection on what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ – both as an individual and as part of a community. Drawing from Bonhoeffer's work, I suggest three concepts as a significant theological response and challenge to the narcissistic aspects identified in the BAM churches I studied: Cheap grace, theology of the cross, and uncertainty of life.

Atkinson, William P. "A theological appraisal of the doctrine that Jesus died spiritually, as taught by Kenyon, Hagin and Copeland." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/2231.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis appraises the doctrine that Jesus ‘died spiritually’ (JDS), as taught by E. W. Kenyon, Kenneth E. Hagin and Kenneth Copeland: important research because of the influence of these men and their teaching, not least on Pentecostalism. JDS teaching originated with Kenyon, was introduced to the Word-faith movement by Hagin, and continues to be offered by Copeland. However, it has been the subject of much criticism. The appraisal conducted in this project is primarily theological. Aspects of JDS teaching are considered in the light of both the Christian scriptures and the church’s great thinkers. Theological investigation into Kenyon’s immediate sources is also conducted. The research finds that the alleged ‘spiritual death’ of Christ incorporates three major elements: in this ‘death’, Jesus was separated from God; partook of a sinful, satanic nature; and was Satan’s prey. Jesus had to die thus to atone for human sin. The appraisal observes that criticism of JDS teaching offered so far is partially inaccurate. In particular, the alleged ‘spiritualisation’ of Christ’s death does not owe its origin to New Thought or Christian Science, as claimed, but is developed by Kenyon from seeds lying within Higher Life and Faith Cure circles. However, study of the three main aspects of JDS teaching confirms earlier research that it often misrepresents the Christian scriptures. Furthermore, it departs significantly from historic Christian formulations. This particularly applies to the claim that Christ partook of Satan’s nature. The project concludes that JDS teaching is not readily compatible with the traditional trinitarianism, incarnationalism and substitutionary atonement to which it claims to adhere. Adoption of JDS teaching by Pentecostalism would be damaging in these doctrinal respects, and thus draw the latter away from its moorings in traditional Christianity. Pentecostalism is advised to reject the bulk of this teaching.

Butterworth, Alastair Gavin. "E.W. Kenyon's influence of the use of the Scriptures in the Word of Faith Movement through the teachings of Kenneth E. Hagin and Kenneth Copeland: a dogmatic study / A.G. Butterworth." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8871.

Full text
Abstract:
This study deals with how E.W. Kenyon’s use of the Bible was the foundation used by Kenneth Hagin and Kenneth Copeland to build the Word of Faith Movement. Kenyon could be considered the grandfather of this movement, while Hagin can be regarded as the father and Copeland, the one on whose shoulders Hagin’s mantle has fallen since his death. It includes brief biographies of Kenyon, Hagin and Copeland and their ministries. It looks into how influential Kenyon’s use of the Bible is in developing his doctrines, which have been copied by both Hagin and Copeland and the Word of Faith's pastors throughout the world. This study is not an exhaustive examination of Kenyon’s doctrines but enough is studied to show he does not conform to traditional reformed theological hermeneutics. Kenyon’s writings date back to the early twentieth century. Hagin’s writings are from the mid- and late twentieth century, while Copeland writes from the late twentieth century to the present day. It will be shown that Hagin and Copeland copied Kenyon’s use of the Bible almost verbatim, resulting in them promoting doctrines in the Word of Faith Movement similar to his doctrines. This study deals with Kenyon’s writings in Chapter 2, while Chapter 3 deals with Hagin’s and Copeland’s teachings. Chapter 4 compares the three’s teachings from a reformed theological perspective, using literature by fairly modern-day writers on reformed theology. Chapter 5 evaluates and concludes and offers recommendations for further study. Finally, Kenyon’s and his two followers’ teachings are summarised and evaluated. The study will also examine some of the effects these teachings have on the individual who attends Word of Faith Movement churches. Future research topics that could help in understanding the attraction these teachings have for people and the danger they pose to reformed churches today are suggested.

Huang, Lindsey A. "Prosperity Belief and Liberal Individualism: A Study of Economic and Social Attitudes in Guatemala." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc801941/.

Full text
Abstract:
Globalization has facilitated the growth of “market-friendly” religions throughout the world, but especially in developing societies in the global South. A popular belief among these movements is prosperity belief. Prosperity belief has several characteristics which make it compatible with liberal individualism, the dominant value in a globalized society. At the same time, its compatibility with this value may be limited, extending only to economic liberalism, but not to liberal attitudes on social issues. Data from the Pew Forum on Religious and Public Life’s 2006 survey Spirit and Power: Survey of Pentecostals in Guatemala is used to conduct a quantitative analysis regarding the economic and social attitudes of prosperity belief adherents in Guatemala in order to examine the potential, as well as the limits, of this belief’s compatibility with liberal individualism. Results suggest that support for liberal individualism is bifurcated. On one hand there is some support for the positive influence of prosperity belief on economic liberalism in regards to matters of free trade, but on the other hand, prosperity belief adherents continue to maintain conservative attitudes in regards to social issues. As prosperity belief and liberal individualism continue to grow along global capitalism, these findings have implications for the future of market-friendly religions and for the societies of the global South.

Hu, Ziyu. "The strong chromatic index of Halin graphs." Thesis, California State University, Los Angeles, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1583070.

Full text
Abstract:

A strong edge coloring of a graph G is an assignment of colors to the edges of G such that two distinct edges are colored differently if they have adjacent endpoints. The strong chromatic index of a graph G, denoted by χ s&feet;(G), is the minimum number of colors needed for a strong edge coloring of G. A Halin graph G is a planar graph constructed by connecting all leaves of a characteristic tree T without vertices of degree two through a cycle. If a Halin graph G is different from Ne2, Ne 4, and any wheel, then we prove χs&feet;(G) ≤ 2Δ(G) + 1 , where Δ( G) is the maximum degree of G. If, additionally, Δ(G) = 4, we prove χs&feet;( G) ≤ χs&feet;(T) + 2, where T is the characteristic tree of G.

Manginis, Georgios. "Hagia Koryphe (Jabal Musa) in Sinai, Egypt." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2010. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28729/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis examines the history of Hagia Koiyphe, a mountain peak above the Monastery of Saint Catherine at South Sinai. It has been known for centuries as 'Mount Sinai,' the place where Moses received the Law from God, as described in Exodus. The thesis explores the ways in which the landscape of Hagia Koiyphe was experienced and transformed, using textual criticism, historical analysis, art historical appreciation and, for the first time, archaeological interpretation. The narrative begins in the third century AD, when the identification of the Biblical 'Mount Sinai' with Hagia Koiyphe was made, and extends to World War I. Chapter 1 deals with the aims, method and problems of the research, the toponymy and natural environment. Chapter 2 examines the Bedouin, the anchorites and their relationship. An analysis of the material record from and textual references to Hagia Koiyphe in the Early Christian period follows. Chapter 3 delves into the building programme of the emperor Justinian (mid-sixth century). It presents written sources on and describes the imperial foundations. Earlier research on the basilica of Hagia Koiyphe and the programme's impact on locals are discussed. Chapter 4 covers the years between the 630s and 1822: the continuation of earlier ways of life and the changes due to the coming of Islam, the importance of Hagia Koiyphe in Muslim tradition, the collapse of the summit basilica and the cult of Saint Catherine. The medieval period was dominated by the pilgrimage phenomenon and the patronage of Muslim rulers. In Ottoman times the Monastery was consolidated within Orthodox hierarchy and the era of pilgrimage ended. Chapter 5 examines the 'Mount of the Law controversy' and the scholarly, artistic and tourist phenomenon of nineteenth-century Sinai. The Epilogue focuses on the future of Hagia Koiyphe at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
Even though numerous individuals have been sentenced for committing some of the most heinous crimes known to mankind, there still does not exist clear guidelines as to the process which should be followed by courts that are in the process of determining an appropriate sentence for individuals guilty of committing international crimes. The aim of this study was to establish how South African courts should approach the sentencing of individuals guilty of committing international crimes as South Africa has not as yet had to sentence an individual guilty of committing an international crime. It is, however, significantly clear that South African courts must follow Section 51 of the Implementation of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court Act 27 of 2002 and impose a sentence of imprisonment for life except if substantial and compelling circumstance exist which justifies a departure from this standard. In the establishment of substantial and compelling circumstances the South African courts will definitely revert to the jurisprudence of the international criminal courts and tribunals and that of South African criminal courts as well. This study is comprised of a literature review consisting of international legal instruments, legislation, electronic sources, text books, academic journals and South African, as well as international case law.

Akinci, Yalt Sevgi Tugce. "Hagia Sophia as a Facture: Originality through Appropriations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/104161.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to investigate the hybrid facture of one of the most influential buildings of architectural history, Hagia Sophia, which has been a source of wonder and awe since its construction in the sixth century. Since the first temple erected on that site; old-new, future-past, forgetting-remembering are all intertwined in the imaginative act of initiating and its continuous making as re-makings that manifest the building as a palimpsest-in-the-becoming. Its originality lies not any of its chronological beginnings but its diachronic facture of interweaved historical, mythical and architectural strata of its remakings through appropriation. The conquest of Constantinople, a central moment in Hagia Sophia's macro-history, marked the beginning of the diachronic appropriation of the site and building elements that are of Byzantine origin. By employing the south turret as the site of the minaret, the appropriation became a twofold strategy of preservation and innovation that ensured sacredness and continuity. An intertwined narrative was factured by complementing the material appropriation with deliberately constructed mythopoeic and visual re-makings of Byzantine texts and representations. Evliya Celebi's tale in which an Ottoman architect was said to have laid the foundations of a minaret preceding the conquest and the Dusseldorf manuscript, an idiosyncratic version of Buondelmonti's Liber Insularum Archipelagi are the two accounts through which this study aims to open-up a multi-directional dialogue to explore the appropriation program of Hagia Sophia. Within this framework, a critical revisiting of the concepts of facture, making, palimpsest, original, spolia and their respective relationships will provide clues to tackle the transformation process the building is going through currently. In a way, its hybrid facture will act as a paradigmatic model for the future undertakings.

Abstract:
The transition to turbulence for shear-thinning fluid with a yield-stress in a cylindrical pipe flow is studied. A linear stability analysis is performed using modal and non-modal approches. The numerical results show that the Hagen-Poiseuille flow of yield stress fluid is linearly stable. The effect of rheological behavior of the fluid on the characteristics of the optimal perturbation is clearly highlighted. At very low Herschel-Bulkley number (Hb << 1), the optimal perturbation consists of almost streamwise vortices, and the amplification of the kinetic energy is provided by the lift-up mechanism. In contrast for sufficiently large values of $Hb$, the optimal perturbation is axisymmetric and the growth of the kinetic energy is provided by the Orr-mechanism. From experimental point of view, the flow of 0.2 wt % aqueous solution of Carbopol 940 in a pipe is investigated from the measurement of the mean, i.e., time-averaged, axial velocity profiles as well as the statistical analysis of the fluctuations. It is observed that the velocity profiles are axisymmetric in the laminar and turbulent regimes, and present an increasing asymmetry with increasing Reynolds number in the transitional regime. A three-dimensional description of this asymmetry is provided from velocity profiles measurements at different azimuthal positions. The observed transitional flow suggest the existence of a robust non-linear coherent structure characterized by two weakly modulated counter-rotating longitudinal vortices, which length is comparable to that of the test section. The statistical analysis of the axial velocity fluctuations indicate that the transition occurs essentially in two stages. The first stage corresponds to the transition from the laminar regime to a stable non linear asymmetric state, where the spectra of axial velocity fluctuations are similar to those obtained in the case of two-dimensional turbulence. The second stage corresponds to the transition from this non linear asymmetric state to the hydrodynamic turbulence with the apparition of the classical spots of turbulence
