Herbalism refers to the traditional practice of using plants and plant extracts for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. The practice of using plant extracts for wounds and lesions has been continuously implemented by a number of local families until today. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial efficacy of common local plant leaves used for poultice: madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium) and hagonoy (Chromolaena odorata) leaf extracts against sewage water bacteria. Two extraction methods were utilized to extract the antibacterial properties of the leaves: maceration and hot decoction, in different concentrations of 25%, 15%, and 5%. Results revealed significant antibacterial activity at higher concentrations; specifically, the 25% extract concentration demonstrated the most significant reduction in inhibiting bacteria, suggesting that the effectiveness of the extracts is dose-dependent. Furthermore, maceration proved to be a more efficient method for extracting the antibacterial properties of the leaves compared to hot decoction. While the madre de cacao and hagonoy leaf extracts illustrated antibacterial activity against sewage water bacteria, the difference in colony counts proves that the hagonoy leaves are more potent than the madre de cacao in this investigation.

Abstract:
Chromolaena odorata Linn is considered an environmental weed that is traditionally used as a treatment of numerous environmental conditions such as wound healing functions and amelioration of inflammation. In this study, Chromolaena odorata linn was discovered as an alternative and natural product of mosquitocide. Based on the results gathered and obtained the stem, leaves, and roots are proven to be effective to use rather than using only one part of the plant. Furthermore, the data gathered shows that it only took a small amount of time to kill the mosquito using all parts of the Chromolaena odorata linn extract. The mosquitocidal activity of Chromolaena odorata linn had shown its potential significance, eco-friendly, and cost-effective with the presence of botanical phytochemicals (alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthocyanin, tannin, and flavonoids) as a source of controlling the mosquito population Keywords: botanical potency, mosquitocidal, chromolaena odorata Linn, mosquitos.

Abstract:
Public transportation is one of the sectors most affected by high tides in Hagonoy, Bulacan, Philippines. To overcome the challenges posed by these tides, local tricycles, a form of public transportation, have been modified with elevated sidecars and driver's seats that remain above the water level. These modified tricycles are locally known as Tikling. This study aims to identify the perceived risks associated with public transportation, specifically Tikling, during tidal flooding events in selected Barangays in Hagonoy, Bulacan, Philippines. The researchers employed a mixed-method design to gather the necessary information and address the study's objectives. Data were collected from 161 respondents, including 130 passengers, 25 Tikling drivers, and six representatives from local government units and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office. The findings revealed that passengers perceive riding Tikling under different weather conditions, flood levels, and ground clearance to pose moderate risks, as indicated by a mean score of 6.42, and that floods contribute to increased travel time and fare. The recommendations from the local government units include revisiting tariffs to establish accurate travel fees, conducting an Education Information Campaign to raise awareness about the risks associated with traveling, improving the structural quality of Tikling, and promoting coordination between the Pedicab Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (PETODA), a local association of tricycle drivers, and the local government office. The study suggests standardizing Tikling to minimize the risks involved. This standardization should address factors such as ground clearance, materials used, and the appropriate design of these modified public vehicles.

Abstract:
Invasive plant species (Antigonon leptopus and Chromolaena odorata) are known to produce a wide array of natural products with prospected relevance in combatting cancer. Thus, this study aimed to assess the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of A. leptopus (ALE) and C. odorata (COE) leaf extracts, profile their secondary metabolites, and predict their pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and cancer cell line cytotoxicity using in silico tools. A. leptopus leaf extracted with 70 % (v/v) ethanol contained alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and tannin. C. odorata confirmed the presence of similar phytochemicals except for the absence of alkaloids. The relatively higher antioxidant and antiproliferative potency of ALE could be attributed to its higher total phenolic content, almost three-folds that of COE. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry profiling reported 21 putative metabolites in ALE and eight from COE. Screening using in silico tools based on their pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and predicted cancer-cell line cytotoxicity identified ten drug leads. These drug leads have druglike physicochemical properties; orally bioavailable with high gastrointestinal absorption and low-to-nontoxicity. Furthermore, they are predicted to be bioactive against various cancer cell lines, with probabilities >0.5. These indicate that A. leptopus and C. odorata leaf extracts have viable antioxidant and antiproliferative compounds that may prevent or inhibit carcinogenesis. Abstract:
Solid Waste Management has been a problem for rural and urban communities. The study aims to provide a basis for urban and rural communities to improve their awareness, attitudes, and practices on solid waste management at a household level and collaborate with local government units toward effective Household Solid Waste Management (HSWM) implementation, ordinances, and mitigation. A 30-item close-ended assessment with 5-item follow-up questions was constructed to determine and compare the level of awareness, attitudes, and practices on HSWM between Barangay Bignay, Valenzuela (urban group), and Barangay Santa Elena, Hagonoy (rural group). The data was analyzed using One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to know the significant relationship between the bases (i.e., awareness, attitudes, and practices) in both barangays. Findings showed that the awareness of HSWM, practices, and attitude was high in the urban area, having a p-value of 0.003474, a lesser p-value than in rural with 0.007341. The comparisons analyzed using ANOVA reflecting a p-value of 0.96 concluded that there is a significant difference between the bases on the two groups since it is greater than the 0.50 level of significance. The bases were determined to have a positive relationship and thus directly affect the respondents' applications on HSWM and their communities. The LGUs implement an SWM program but still needs improvement as these contradict the measured practices. The study suggests a stricter implementation and orientation for both barangays on solid management programs.

Abstract:
As science and technology advanced, antimicrobial agents were discovered, bringing with them the burden of antimicrobial resistance. This led to the hunt for effective techniques to combat microbial diseases. Chromolaena odorata is often used for traditional wound healing since it helps to stop bleeding quickly. Chromolaena odorata of the Asteraceae family is one of the world's most invasive weeds. It is also known as Siam weed, devil weed, French weed, communist weed, hagonoy, co chon triffid weed, and Awolowo, Akintola, and Obiarakara weed. Chromolaena odorata is often used for traditional wound healing since it helps to stop bleeding quickly. Several studies have shown that Siam weed extract promotes hemostasis and wound healing. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the bioactive components and antibacterial efficacy of different extracts of Chromolaena odorata on various microbiological isolates. Fresh leaves were collected, identified, air-dried, and ground. Cold maceration and soxhlet extraction were carried out using ethanol and n-hexane as extractive solvents, respectively. The chemical composition was identified using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique, and the antibacterial action was tested using established protocols. The antimicrobial test revealed that the aqueous extract had a bacteriostatic effect, but the ethanol extract had a bactericidal effect against microbiological isolates at a concentration of 200mg/mL. The most prevalent bioactive chemicals discovered in both extracts are oleic acid, octadecanoic acid, and hexadecanoic acid. The extracts possessed antibacterial capabilities and included certain bioactive components, which might contribute to their overall efficacy, according to this research.

Abstract:
This study was anchored on the idea of implementing the “My Brother’s Keeper” Squad system in the Philippine National Police as an Internal Cleansing Strategy that aims to prevent police abuses and to identify and weed out defiant PNP personnel, particularly those who are engaged in illegal activities, and impose corrective and punitive measures. It also aims to instill in all PNP personnel a strong sense of commitment, dedication, and responsibility to police work geared towards a God-centered, service-oriented and family-based life. This study attempted to know the effects of implementing the “My Brother’s Keeper” squad system to the PNP Personnel of the Hagonoy Municipal Police Station as a corrective strategy for erring PNP personnel and the challenges encountered by the PNP personnel to its implementation. The study adopted an action research and also used descriptive qualitative research designs to picture the effects and challenges of the PNP Personnel in the implementation of such internal cleansing strategy of the PNP. Upon the analysis of this study, there are two themes developed in the implementation of “My Brother’s Keeper” squad system in the Philippine National Police: (1) God-centered; and (2) ServiceOriented. The result of the study implied a clear indication that the Squad system emphasizes values formation, spiritual development and strengthening its commitment of its personnel to their profession, however, for every system implemented, it also have challenges to face on. This study also identified some challenges to improve: there are no sufficient time to internalize, no proper venue to conduct the session and hesitations to share that may lead to misunderstanding or conflict of belief/faith.

Abstract:
Bans on the use of antibiotics as feed additives have accelerated and led to investigations of alternative feed additives in animal production. To this end, the response of broiler chickens fed various medicinal plants methanol extract as a replacement for antibiotics was investigated. A total of 180 unsexed Ross strain broiler chickens were randomly assigned to four available plant leaf extract namely, Gercinia kola (Bitter Kola), Alcornea cordifolia (Christmas bush), Pterocarpus santalinoides (Red scandal wood) and Chromolaena odorata (Hagony or Siam weed). Each treatment group had 30 birds each. The treatments were replicated thrice with 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experiment which lasted for 56 days. Serum biochemical indices of the broiler chickens were evaluated. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the mean values of all the parameters measured with the exception of total protein and globulin. However, the values (4.75 – 6.65g/dl) obtained did not reveal any health problem. In conclusion, the findings of this study showed that the medicinal plant methanol extracts have considerable potentials as component of broiler chicken diet. Alcornea cordifolia plant methanol extract can successfully be used to replace antibiotics for broiler production. Further research should be carried out on Alcornea cordifolia and other medicinal plants to examine their potentials and inhibitory characteristics. Les interdictions sur l'utilisation d'antibiotiques sous forme d'additifs alimentaires ont été accélérées et ont conduit à des enquêtes d'additifs alternatifs d'alimentation dans la production animale. Language arts education has experienced enormous growth and change with the advent of multimodalities in new media, digital literacies, and technologies. In this paper, Hagood uses Deleuze and Guattari theoretical work of a rhizome, rhizoanalysis, and rhizomatic cartography to view the field and examine differently converging theories, expounding upon the commonalities and proposing research and educational possibilities that these connections afford. She uses rhizoanalysis to map a rhizome of 21st century language arts education and attempts to show openings for language arts education that account for traditional and multimodal literacies within an era of traditionally assessed educational accountability. She also presents a landscape of possible implications for research and instruction in language arts through a relational analysis of Deleuze and Guattari’s map and the tracing.

Abstract:
This paper presents a numerical study on the influence of multimodal shunt circuit parameters in the flutter velocity of a typical section under an unsteady airflow. Flutter on typical sections is a kind of self-excited oscillation which can occur due to the interaction with the airflow. In the flutter point, when the critical dynamic pressure is reached, the vibrations of the typical section become unstable and increase fast and significantly in time. As a result, it can lead the structure to failure. Thus, it becomes important to investigate the possibility of reducing the effects of flutter in order to increase the reliability of composite structures during service. In this work, the aero-electromechanical dynamic model formulation is based on the Hamilton principle. The unsteady aerodynamic forces are calculated based on the linearized thin-airfoil theory, proposed by Theodorsen. The passive element responsible for the energy dissipation is a multimodal resonant shunt circuit in series topology, attached to a piezoelectric patch. An iterative solution algorithm is proposed to solve the resultant nonlinear eigenvalue problem. The optimum shunt tuning is firstly performed using Hagood and Flotow’s propositions; then, it is used an heuristic optimization algorithm, based on Differential Evolution. The preliminary results indicate that the flutter speed can be affected by the passive control, both in its mechanical aspect as electrical.

Abstract:
AbstractBackgroundDuring the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the lack of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in health care facilities amplified human-to-human transmission and contributed to the magnitude of this humanitarian disaster.Case ReportIn the summer of 2014, the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG; Geneva, Switzerland) conducted an IPC assessment and developed a project based on the local needs and their expertise with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Humanitarian Aid Unit (SDC/HA; Bern, Switzerland). The project consisted of building local capacity in the production of alcohol-based hand-rub solution (ABHRS) based on the World Health Organization (WHO; Geneva, Switzerland) formula in non-Ebola health facilities at the peak of the outbreak in Liberia (Fall 2014) and during recovery in Guinea (September 2015) to promote safer care. Twenty-one pharmacists in Liberia and 22 in Guinea were trained and one years’ worth of laboratory equipment, chemical products, containers for personal use, and bioethanol were delivered to 10 hospitals per country with more than 8,000 100 ml bottles of solution produced at the end of the project.DiscussionHand hygiene using hand-rub solution is a critical component of safer care, especially in health care settings lacking runnable water. Throughout the Ebola outbreak, it was a timely moment to promote hand-rub solution and to reinforce IPC measures in non-Ebola health facilities. During the project implementation, a substantial challenge was the unavailability of bioethanol in Liberia and Guinea. In the long run, sustainability of the production can become an issue as it depends heavily on the local government’s financial and political commitment, the capacity to create an on-going demand for hand-rub solution in health facilities, the local purchase and replacement of the materials and chemical products, as well as the availability of continuous local partners’ support. Conclusion:The project demonstrated that it was feasible to build local capacity in ABHRS production during an emergency and in limited-resource settings when materials and training are provided. Future programs in similar contexts should identify and address the factors of sustainability during the implementation phase and provide regular, long-term technical support.Jacquerioz BauschFA, HellerO, BengalyL, Matthey-KhouityB, BonnabryP, TouréY, KervillainGJ, BahEI, ChappuisF, HagonO. Abstract:
Abstract Both self-perceived and primed generativity has been found to be linked to better cognitive and physical functioning, psychological well-being, and longevity in older adulthood. A prior experiment also found that priming older individuals with messages regarding the generative, or contributory value of their social group (older adults) boosted cognitive performance compared to exposure to a message about the societal burden of one’s group (Hagood & Gruenewald, 2018) . A key limitation of this earlier work was the lack of a neutral prime condition to determine whether being exposed to messages regarding the generativity of older adults enhanced their cognitive performance or being exposed to negative messages regarding the social burdens of one’s age group suppressed performance. This limitation was addressed in the current online experiment of 300 U.S. adults age 55 and older who were randomly exposed to either a social generativity, social burden, or neutral prime presented as a test of reading comprehension and recall. Participants completed other measures of cognitive ability before and after the priming task, including an assessment of verbal memory. An ANCOVA model including age as a covariate indicated a significant effect of priming condition (F(2,296) = 3.30, p = .038). Mean verbal memory performance did not vary between the neutral and social burden priming conditions, while performance was significantly higher in the generativity prime condition (d=.29). Experimental findings provide support for the hypothesis that exposure to generative messages about one’s social group can boost cognitive performance in a national sample of older adults.

The discovery that the use of antibiotic in food animals is fueling the increasing problem of transmitting resistance bacteria from food animals to man has led to the search for an alternative to the use of antibiotics. To this end, the response of broiler chickens administered various medicinal plant methanol extract as a replacement for antibiotics was investigated. The plant extracts encompass four available leaves; Gereinia kola (Bitter Kola), Alcornea cordifolia (Christmas bush), Pterocarpus santalinoides (Red scandal wood) and Chromolera Odorata (Hagony or Siam weed). The experimental diet was same for all the treatment groups since the methanol extract of the leaves were administered in their drinking water against synthetic antibiotics. 180 unsexed Ross strain broiler chickens were randomly assigned to these dietary treatments which had 30 birds each. The treatments were replicated thrice with 10 birds per replicate in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experiment which lasted for 56 days. Carcass characteristics and internal organ proportions were considered which differed significantly (p<0.05). Abstract:
Abstract Purpose: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most lethal disease and the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The survival rate of patients with this form of cancer is about 8%. The physiological barrier of the tumor microenvironment composed of a dense stroma and disorganized blood vessels creates a barrier for early identification and treatment of this deadly disease. In recent years, nanoparticle-based controlled delivery systems were developed to exploit the pathophysiology of biological systems such as acidic tumor microenvironment or the altered tumor-specific enzymes to improve the diagnosis and treatment efficacy. Here, we demonstrate the collagenase IV-mediated tumor site-selective release of the IR-780 imaging probe from the M-Ge-SDC1 nanoparticles, revealing the feasibility of the collagenase IV (MMP-9) responsive target specificity for diagnosing pancreatic cancer by multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) imaging. Methods: Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) with wormhole pore topology were synthesized and were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The surface of MSN was conjugated with Gelatin-A to obtain M-Ge. The M-Ge particles were loaded with propidium Iodide (PI) or IR780 infrared imaging dye. The M-Ge surface was further conjugated with Syndecan-1 (SDC1) to improve the target specificity to release imaging cargo from the nanoparticles. Female athymic mice were orthotopically implanted with S2VP10 tumor cells. After a week of tumor implantation, mice were intravenously injected with M-Ge-SDC1 nanoparticles containing IR780 dye and were imaged with MSOT and AMI. Results: In the current study, Mesoporous silica nanoparticles with 27 nm diameter were synthesized. The Gelatin-A crosslinking on the surface of MSN particles as a gatekeeper was developed that could degrade upon contact with collagenase IV in the tumor microenvironment. The conjugation of SDC1 further improved the tumor specificity. The athymic mice orthotopically implanted with S2VP10 cells closely resemble human PDAC. Our results demonstrated that intravenous delivery of M-Ge-SDC1 nanoparticles could enzymatically degrade (MMP-9) and release IR780 at the tumor site and conjugation of SDC1 further improved the tumor specificity to detect the orthotopically implanted pancreatic tumors (p<0.0001,n=5). Conclusion: Due to the lack of effective screening tools, PDAC has the lowest survival rate and limited therapeutic efficacy for current FDA-approved drugs compared to other malignancies. Innovative technologies to develop engineered nanoparticles with active targeting moiety and dynamic imaging technology can overcome these limitations. Implementing such systems can enhance PDAC detection that can be translated into the clinic to improve health care. Citation Format: Abhilash Samykutty, Molly McNally, William M. Abstract:
The study attempted to look on to the readiness of the Technology and Livelihood Education students of the Bulacan State University Hagonoy Campus in taking the Licensure Examination for Teachers during the school year 2018-2019. The study made used of both qualitative and quantitative research. Grades of the respondents was requested to the university registrar and a standardized comprehensive examination was given to the respondents to validate their readiness in taking the board examination. A face-to-face interview was also conducted to know the problems they have encountered in taking the course and in taking the comprehensive examination. Weighted mean was computed and determine the readiness of the respondents using the Pearson R correlation. As revealed by the findings, both general weighted average and the result of the comprehensive examination registered a very weak linear correlation. In order to respond to the observations cited by the respondents the researcher suggested to provide an in-house review before taking the board examination and a strict retention policy among education students.
