Alors que l’éthique et la loi poussent la recherche à plus de sécurité, ainsi qu’à une moindre utilisation des animaux, il est devenu crucial de développer des systèmes in vitro d’une plus grande pertinence. Depuis la fin du XXe siècle, plusieurs systèmes ont fait leur apparition pour tenter de pallier les difficultés rencontrées, et notamment les « organes-sur-puces » (organ-on-chip systems). Ces systèmes microfluidiques de culture cellulaire avancés permettant de recréer certaines fonctions tissulaires grâce au contrôle très précis des conditions du microenvironnement cellulaire. Malgré les avancées de la bioingénierie et l’amélioration de nos méthodes de culture in vitro, la discipline est jeune et de nombreux progrès restent à faire. Les travaux présentés ici détaillent le développement d’un organe-sur-puce incluant une membrane d'hydrogel déformable et dégradable, aux propriétés physico-chimiques proches de tissus mous tels que les poumons ou les intestins. Cette puce semble pertinente pour accueillir des tissus barrières, composés de plusieurs types cellulaires, organisés de part et d'autre, ainsi qu'au sein de cette barrière, souvent soumise à des stimuli mécaniques. Durant ce doctorat, plusieurs objectifs ont été atteints : - Concevoir et fabriquer un organe-sur-puce incluant un hydrogel biocompatible et déformable, ainsi qu’un système microfluidique permettant le contrôle indépendant du flux et de la déformation de la membrane d’hydrogel. - Caractériser la déformation subie par l’hydrogel. - Cultiver dans la puce des cellules intestinales, formant un épithélium structuré en trois dimensions, et caractériser sa perméabilité à des molécules de tailles variées<br>Modern day ethics and laws call for more safety and use of fewer animals in biomedical research. It became crucial to develop novel in vitro devices of higher relevance. Since the end of the twentieth century, several systems have been proposed by researchers in attempts to palliate the shortcomings of current systems. Notably, organs-on-chip systems are specifically tailored to recapitulate tissue functions in a manner that remains easily accessible for the experimenter. Despite the significant improvements that were brought during the last century to in vitro cell and tissue culture systems, the field of bioengineering is still young and much progress remains to be done. The work presented here details the development of an organ-on-chip that includes a biocompatible and actuatable hydrogel membrane, with controlled physico-chemical properties. Such chip is relevant when hosting barrier tissues, which are composed of several cell types, disposed on each side of a barrier, as well as within its bulk, and are often submitted to mechanical stimuli. During this PhD, several objectives have been attained. Notably, we: - Designed and produced an organ-on-chip including a biocompatible and actuatable hydrogel layer, as well as a microfluidic system allowing the independent control of both flow and actuation. - Characterized the deformation of the hydrogel layer. - Cultured intestinal cells within the chip, which formed a three dimensionally structure epithelium, and characterized its apparent permeability to molecules of varying sizes

Through the development of draping and pleating methods of heavy fabric referring indirectly to the stage Curtain, the aim of the project is to study ambiguous coexistence of masking and exposing made by repetitive folds, simultaneously developing technique studies and site analysis and apply them to make a new concert hall for Stockholm.The thesis defines the concert hall a public space, and further develops the concert hall as a public space by exposing the commonly inaccessible backstage area in on the ground floor Visitors and concert-goers have the opportunity to look behind the scenes and reconsider the value of art by seeing how a piece of music has been shaped and rehearsed. There are some performance halls throughout Europe that open their backstage doors to the public in order to see what is going on behind the stage.Ways of disclosing the backstage has been achieved through design technique studies and by considering the history of folded fabric in a design research.The main part of the research is based on the theoretical influence that Semper specified in his book Style, the topic of textiles and their relationship in architecture and it has been completed by developing a terminology and meanings defined by contemporary artist Petra Blaisse in her book Inside outside.Throughout history, many artists have spent time on the study of fabric and folds; an example is the dramatic drapery in Baroque sculptures such as the “Bernini folds,” making a hard material appears soft. I tried to take advantage of all the qualities that heavy fabric can offer for the development of my building and use most of the information that can be derived from fabrics application.An example of applying these qualities is making deep semi masked openings. Making apertures through deep folds to rehearsal rooms, the folds open and close visually as people pass by. By continuing this method and using the qualities of deep surfaces from outside to inside I tried to achieve a backstage that is both open and masked in the same time.The project has been started by focusing on two parallel tracks of site and technique study.The site is located on the Djurgården. Djurgården is home to historical buildings and monuments, museums, galleries. Galärparken is located between three museums that are known for their historical heritage. This site requires very careful design in relation to buildings surrounding it. However; the site provides a good context for a distinctive building that creates identity and contributes to a good overall situation. Parallel to the site analyzes the design technique studies have been developed.The proposal has been developed through analyzing two parallel tracks of pleating and draping.Within the pleating method linear techniques have been investigated to make repetitive folds to define surfaces, and extruding techniques have been investigated to create volumetric depth.Draping methods are: fluttering, masking, fullness and tassel. After defining and refining each of the techniques, they have been applied at a building scale to articulate the material organization of the concert hall.Tassel: Tying fabric from one end and hang it. framing space while having fabric freely.A tuft of loosely hanging fabric, cords, or other material knotted at one end ” ...another of white cashmere, draped in heavy folds, hanging in half moons and caught at every interval with splendid white silk tassels, each draping being trimmed with a narrow silk fringe” Gottfried Semper, StyleFluttering: To make small, gentle movements in the air, to move something in a particular direction by pulling it gently e.g. “A wind machine blew air in to the drape and made it flutter” Inside outside, Petra BlaisseMasking: To cover or hide something so it cannot be clearly seen. Fullness is a common term used to describe an aspect of stage curtains; it is directly attributable to the amount of pleating present. For instance, a curtain that has no pleating at all (a flat sheet) has 0% fullness; a curtain that has 100% fullness will start out as fabric that is twice as wide as required.”Glossary of Theatre terms.The project’s program is to make a 1500-seat auditorium.The project is made of two different layers. The first layer shapes the outer envelope and the other layer is happening inside enveloping the auditorium. These two layers are connected by different shaped slabs at different levels. The auditorium drapes loosely between the slabs at different levels. The circulation between floors take places all around the auditorium. Each level has a view to the other floors so the flow of people can be seen from different levels.The first floor is accessible for all people and provides an open plan while exposing backstage and makes transition between Nordiska museum and the waterfront.The fullness quality has been introduced in three parts of the exterior envelope in relation to the site. The first is the part that faces the Nordic museum including one of the entrances between the folds.The next part is the part that faces to Stockholm and again openings are embedded between the folds.The last pleated part is located within the side that faces Vasa museum. The Vasa museum is here in close proximity with the concert hall. In respect to the Vasa museum the concert hall has been pushed in, and deep surfaces can be seen here as well.The inner layer has been shaped also by deep surfaces made by deep folds. At ground floor, where the back stage is located, the deep folds can make semi open apertures and provide a view to rehearsal rooms for visitors. From the other side the semi masked openings of the backstage faces a cafeteria with seats with a view to the training rooms.On the other floors, folds create openings to the auditorium from different sides.The concert hall has been shaped with respect to site and adjacent buildings. The implementation and coexistence of masking and revealing strategies have been developed through design techniques studies and subsequently influenced the design.

The main goal of this project was to write a review about different quantum Hall effects. This review focuses on the integer and relativistic quantum Hall effect in graphene. The quantum Hall effect is a newly discovered phenomena that was experimentally observed in 1980 and relativistic quantum Hall effect in graphene was observed in 2005. This project takes a theoretical approach to describe the quantum Hall effects and graphene itself. Experiments has shown that for very strong magnetic fields applied to 2D systems, the Hall resistance becomes quantized, RH=h/ne2 and only depends on the charge of the electron and Planck's constant, two fundamental constants of nature. This sets a new standard on how to define resistance, and gives a good tool for precise measurements of the fine structure constant.

Despite all great words about public architecture with democracy and everyone's equal value in mind, I believe that a future belief and a common idea can often be lacking today. In my work, I have therefore decided to examine how a Town Hall can be used as a tool for creating a natural connection between citizens and authorities. Can the design of a Town Hall help to construct the democratic citizen? Can politics find its place in everyday life? My ambition has been to concretise the idealistic slogans.I have developed a number of requirements that the new Town Hall in Nynäshamn should match:- Create a Town Hall with an open cultural arena in center where the municipality appears as citizens own organisation rather than an authority. I am convinced that this aspect is at least as important as a functional program or attractive design.- A Town Hall that gives an insight into the authority's work. The politics must be visible and accessible for an ordinary citizen.- A flexible public solution that matches the requirements of change.- A distinct program that gives an understanding of the logic of the building, both interior and exterior.<br>Trots stora ord om offentlig arkitektur med demokrati och allas lika värde i åtanke, anser jag att en framtidstro och en gemensam idé ofta kan saknas idag. I mitt arbete har jag därför bestämt mig för att undersöka hur ett stadshus kan användas som verktyg för att skapa en naturlig koppling mellan medborgare och myndighet. Kan formgivningen av ett stadshus bidra till att konstruera den demokratiska medborgaren? Kan politiken finna plats i det vardagliga livet? Min ambition har varit att konkretisera de idealistiska slagorden.Jag har tagit fram ett antal krav som det nya stadshuset i Nynäshamn skulle uppfylla:- Skapa ett stadshus med en öppen kulturarena i centrum där kommunen framstår som medborgarnas egna organisation snarare än en myndighet. Jag är övertygad om att den aspekten är minst lika viktig som ett funktionellt program eller en tilltalande design.- Ett stadshus som ger en inblick i myndighetens arbete. Politiken ska vara synlig och tillgänglig för den vanliga medborgaren.- En flexibel offentlig lösning som följer förändringens krav.- Ett tydligt program som ger en förståelse för byggnadens logik såväl interiört som exteriört.

Strängnäs City Hall is a place for the people of Strängnäs to come together. The building is separated into two parts, one part for the people working in the building and one part for the public. The part for the workers consists of a traditional brick building with views overlooking the harbor. The public part has a glass facade, inviting people into the building. Inside the visitor moves through a café into the exhibition hall, up a ramp to the chambers, and further up to the restaurant with the rooftop terrace. The ramp connects the public part to the private part of the building on each level, both physically and visually, bringing the politicians and the residents of Strängnäs together.<br>Strängnäs stadshall är en plats där folket i Strängnäs kommer samman för att mötas. Byggnaden består av två delar, en för de som arbetar i stadshallen, och en för besökare. Delen för dem som arbetar i stadshallen består av en traditionell tegelbyggnad, med god utsikt över hamnen. Den allmänna delen har en glasfasad som ska bjuda in folket i byggnaden. Besökaren rör sig genom caféet till utställningshallen, och därifrån uppåt med en ramp till plenisalen och vidare upp till restaurangen med takterass. Denna rampen kopplar den publika delen med den privata, både fysiskt och visuellt, och för på så sätt samman politikerna med invånarna av Strängnäs.

The new Town Hall in Nynäshamn is a buildning made out of solid timber. My goal with this project was to try to understand solid timber as a material and it’s constructive properties. To help myself in the construction and design of the buildning i set up a few rules. For example that loadbearing walls can not have openings and that conventional doors shall only be used if nessesary. The building has been worked out through scetch models in different scales.

Strängnäs City Hall is situated at a square down by the waterfront. It sits in a place right where old small scale buildings meet a block of stone buildings. The building contains public functions as lobby, restaurant, external meeting rooms, lecture hall and roof terrace as well as office space for the municipality.<br>PLATSEN Tomten för Strängnäs stadshall ligger på en plats med många kvalitéer, belägen vid Västervikstorget med utblick mot hamnen och invid småskalig kulturbebyggelse från 1600-1800talet. Det är en populär plats särskilt på sommaren med gäster i hamnen och försäljning i bodarna. Det är platsens kvalitéer men också dess svårigheter som jag använt för att forma byggnaden. Mot tomtens norra sida ligger de äldre trähusen på en höjd som sträcker sig ut i viken, på den södra sidan dikt an mot tomten ligger ett oavslutat kvarter i stenstadens skala. I nordväst sträcker sig Västervikstorget fram till kajkanten. Jag har i min gestaltning velat arbeta med mötet mellan omgivningens två olika skalor och omvandla det som idag är en baksida av stadskvarteret till en framsida och fond mot torget. GESTALTNING Stadshallen är formad som två spegelvända volymer med förskjutningar i sidled och höjdledd för att möta platsens förutsättningar. I stadskvarteret möter tomten en tung tegelbyggnad som innehåller bland annat en bank, mot söder och mot torget har jag placerat en högre och mer framskjuten volym som spelar med kvarterets skala och skapar en tydlig fond mot torget. Mot norr och småskaliga bebyggelsen placeras en lägre volym som är tillbakadragen från torget. Den norra sidan har även en balkong på första våningen som också fungerar som skärmtak för stadshallens entré. Förskjutningarna tar upp höjdskillnaden mellan den norra och södra sidan och accentuerar torgets riktning.

Nynäshamn City Hall Nynäshamn is a small archipelago city south of Stockholm with around 15,000 inhabitants. Our task was to design a new City Hall that would represent an expansive and progressive community like Nynäshamn. The municipality has an explicit goal of approaching citizens and making them feel included. A building that represents a municipality where its political representatives work is a building that belongs to the citizens as much as it belongs to its employees. I entered the project by trying to find a way to integrate the public activities into activities that a closed state building has. The goal was to achieve a functioning entirety of two entirely different functions one building can have. The collaboration between these two functional extremes made it possible for large parts of the building to be available for visitors, which gave the City Hall an open character. The facade is intense. That's how I want to express inner life. The collision between two extremes forms an entirety. The centre of the building is an atrium that represents the people of Nynäshamn. It is the buildings largest public area. The atrium reaches out and penetrates through the facade of a state building and symbolically explains the character of the building.<br>Nynäshamn kommunhus Nynäshamn är en liten skärgårdstad söder om Stockholm med runt 15 000 invånare. Uppgiften gick ut på att tänka ut och gestalta ett nytt kommunhus som representerar en expansiv och framåtsträvande kommun som Nynäshamn. Kommunen har ett uttalat mål om att närma sig medborgarna. En byggnad som representerar en kommun var dess förtroende valda sitter är en byggnad som tillhör medborgarna lika mycket som den tillhör dess anställda. Utgångspunkten i projektet för mig var att integrera de offentliga funktionerna med funktionerna som en stängd statlig byggnad bär med sig. Målet var åstadkomma en fungerande helhet som präglar min byggnads fundament. Samarbetet mellan dessa två funktionella extremer tillgängliggjorde stora delar av byggnaden vilket gav kommunhuset en öppen karaktär. Fasaden är intensiv. Det är så jag vill utrycka inre livet. Kollisionen mellan två extremer bildar en helhet. Byggnadens kärna är ett atrium som representerar människor av Nynäshamn. Det är kommunhusets största offentliga yta. Atriet kragar ut och tränger sig genom fasaden av en statlig byggnad och på ett symboliskt berättar om husets karaktär.

Strängnäs är en småstad inte helt lik vad som helst, man kan fortfarande se hur de historiska lagren påverkat och än idag påverkar stadens bebyggelse. Hur Domkyrkan, stadens allra tydligaste urbana artefakt bidragit till en våg av byggnader i det kanske självklara materialet tegel, men även i det minst lika vackra ”fattigmansteglet”, falu rödfärg. Det torg där stadshallen placerats består av bägge, dels har vi den strikta huvudgatan med nationalromantiska samt klassicistiska inslag, sedan det mer bråkiga villaområdet norr om, där slamfärger dominerar fasaderna. För mig har projektet gått och blivit väldigt personligt, jag är själv uppvuxen i en mälarstad med historiska anor och förstår vikten av att som invånare kunna identifiera sig med staden och dess stadsväv. Mitt huvudfokus har därför varit att representera samt inkorporera de materiella samt typologiska kvalitéer jag menar att staden samt den mer specifika platsen tillgodoser. Av just denna anleding menar inte mitt projekt att sticka ut, hamnen fungerar redan idag som en port in till staden, där dess silhuetten täcks av den medeltida domkyrkan. Jag har istället med hjälp av materialitet samt proportionsanpassning haft en vilja att smälta in i det redan existerande kvarteret utan att inskränka eller ta fokus från dess redan existerande arkitektoniska kvalitéer.

Gottsunda is facing a big change, where a whole new district will arise. This will contribute to a whole lot of new citizens, and more pressure on the infrastructure where a new train will pass that connects the new district and makes it more attractive. Gottsunda City Hall is located parallel with the new square, which makes it a junction for the area. The City Hall has a big focus on the public world, which makes its focus to be as open and available for the citizens and visitors. The main focus inside the building is sport activities and cultural activities, which is a big part in the lives of the citizens in Gottsunda. Expect sport activities and cultural approaches, a big sports field is located beside the City Hall. The sports field is open to everyone, and is allowed for everyone to use. The building has a very characteristic façade that shows how open and welcoming the building is. The heart and the main room in the City Hall is the big open, diagonal atrium that goes through the whole building. Along this diagonal atrium is the façade all in glass, to make it more open and contribute to have a view from inside out, and from outside in. This to make a strong bond between the building and the crowded square.<br>Gottsunda står inför en stor förändring, där en helt ny stadsdel kommer att skapas. Detta kommer bidra till en mängd nya bostäder, en mängd nya invånare, och en ny tvärbana som kommer gå genom stadsdelen. Gottsunda stadsdelscenter står i relation parallellt med det nytänkta torget, och nya Gottsunda allé, där tvärbanan kommer att gå. Stadsdelscentret står som en knytpunkt för hela den nya stadsdelen. Byggnaden har ett stort fokus på allmänheten, att vara öppet och tillgängligt för Gottsundaborna, och kunna ge dom en plats att vistas på och bruka. Det stora fokuset ligger på sport och aktivitet, vilket är en stor del av det dagliga livet i Gottsunda. Förutom att byggnaden invändigt erbjuder flera kulturella aktiviteter, kreativa och mer fysiska sportaktiviteter, så är en stor sportplan belägen på baksidan. Denna stora sportplan är en förlängning av torget, och är öppet och välkomnande för alla. Hit är alla välkomna, att ta en springrunda eller spela fotboll. Byggnaden har en mycket karaktäristisk fasad, som speglar hur öppen och allmän byggnaden är.Byggnadens hjärta är ett öppet diagonalt atrium, som bidrar till att alla plan ser upp och ned på varandra. Kopplingen mellan torget, sportfältet och byggnaden är också mycket stor då detta öppna atrium är helt inglasat, vilket ger en total insikt in i byggnaden, likaväl som utvändig sikt. Byggnaden ska stå som ett landmärke för Gottsunda, en plats man kan komma för att spendera sin fritid, eller bara ta del av information.

Projektet har som ambition att skapa en modern stadshusbyggnad som möjliggör ökad samverkan mellan kommunen Nynäshamn och dess medborgare. Byggnaden är konstruerad av 30 bågar av betong som spänner upp de två byggnadsvolymerna. Byggnaden möter Stadshusplatsen i nordväst och Floravägen i sydöst. Den böjda formen skapar öppningar på platsen som underlättar för fotgängare att fritt röra sig mellan och genom byggnaden och därigenom förbinda Stadshusplatsen och Floravägen. Fasaden är täckt av glas för att skapa synlighet för medborgarna att se in på den kommunala administrationens dagliga verksamhet. Fasadelementen mellan de bärande bågarna är vinklade och roterade i förhållande till varandra. Taket är även utformat av vinklade rektanglar. Byggnaden är utformad för att uppfylla de programspecifika kraven med möjlighet till att hantera förändrade krav genom sin öppna struktur.<br>The project is based on the ambition of creating a modern town hall building which enables increased interaction between the activities of the municipality and its citizens. The building is constructed by 30 concrete arches which forms the two building volumes. The building meets Stadshusplatsen in northwest and Floravägen in southeast. The curved form of the building creates openings at the site which facilitates pedestrians to move freely between and through the building thereby connecting Stadshusplatsen and Floravägen. The facade is covered by glass to create visibility for the citizens to look into the daily activities of the municipality administration. The facade elements are tilted between the arches and rotated in relation to each other. The roof is also being formed by tilted rectangular elements. The building is designed to meet the programme specific requirements with an ability to cope with changing demands by its open structure.

Strängnäs är en stad med rötter långt tillbaka i historien, och som har ett vackert och blandat stadslandskap. Uppgiften i mitt kandidatprojekt har varit att utforma ett förslag på medborgarhus, beläget på en tomtyta bredvid ett bankhus i kanten till Västervikstorget. Närheten till vattnet, rörelsen på de offentliga ytorna och småskalighetens relation till det mer storskaliga, är teman som har varit viktiga i utformandet av förslaget. Ambitionen med mitt förslag är att skapa en plats som både ger Strängnäs nya offentliga rum och funktionella ytor, men som även binder ihop den närmsta miljön och inbjuder till rörelse. Genom att arbeta med de siktlinjer och offentliga förbindelser som byggnadens tomrum skapar, väcker projektet frågor om hur vår mänskliga nyfikenhet och förväntan kan användas som arkitektoniskt grepp. Förslagets gestaltning tar också upp frågor om hur det intima kan möta det offentliga, hur öppenhet kan förenas med slutenhet.<br>Strängnäs is a city dating a long way back in Swedish history, and which has a beautiful and varying cityscape. The task in my Bachelor project was to design a proposal for a civic hall, located in a central area of Strängnäs next to the plaza "Västervikstorget". Three important factors that have been important in the design process is the closeness to the water, the movement across the public space and the relationship between the intimate and more large-scale local architecture. The ambition of my proposed civic hall is to create a building that while providing new public space and social functions in Strängnäs, also binds together its close surroundings and initiates movement. By working with the different lines of sight and public pathways that emerge in the space between the bodies of the building, the project raises questions about how human curiosity and the sense of anticipation can be utilised in (public) architecture. The project also gives rise to discussion about how spatial intimacy can be combined with public architecture, the latter traditionally being more exposed. How can the contrasts between an open and a closed design get closer to each other?

Detta projekt är ett förslag på en ny stadshall i den mindre kommunen Strängnäs, belägen vid Mälaren. Området präglas av Strängnäs historia samt det varierande landskapet. Den givna platsen för nya stadshallen ligger vid Västervikstorget med båthamnen intill. På ena sidan ser man små äldre trähus växa upp för kullen med den gamla mjölkvarnen på toppen. På motsatta sidan syns murade och putsade kvartershus med domkyrkan i bakgrunden. Mötet mellan de två olika typologierna är spännande och även om denna typ av kontrast är vanlig i Strängnäs så framträder den starkast på platsen för den nya stadshallen. Den nya stadshallen är inspirerad av områdets karaktär med den varierande topografin och mötet mellan byggnadstypologierna. Den undersöker de unika och varierande kvalitéerna från den kontrasterande omgivningen. Tanken är att den nya stadshallen ska behålla den uppbrutna och intima känslan från den äldre bebyggelsen, och samtidigt bevara den solida känslan från stenstadskvarteret och domkyrkan. Resultatet är en uppdelad tegelbyggnad där omkringliggande mark binder samman de olika delarna. Relationen mellan de separata byggnadskropparna formar en serie av öppningar och utomhusytor. Dessa skapar i sin tur koppling, aktivitet och flöde mellan och runt om stadshallen.<br>This project is a proposal for a new city hall in the small town of Strängnäs, located by Lake Mälaren. The area is characterised by its historic background and varying landscape. The given site for the project lies next to a public square, by one of the bays in Strängnäs. On one side of the building site, small wooden houses run up a hill where an old windmill stands. On the opposite side, blocks of brick houses rise up with Strängnäs cathedral in the background. The intersection of the two very different building typologies is unusual and although this kind of contrast is common in Strängnäs, it is ever so evident on the site of the new city hall. The new Strängnäs city hall is inspired by the characteristics of Strängnäs, such as the varying topography and mix of building typologies. It explores the unique and different qualities in the contrasting surroundings. The idea of the project is to preserve the fragmented structure and intimacy of the wooden houses, whilst simultaneously maintaining the solidness of the brick houses and the cathedral. The result is a scattered brick building connected by the terrain it stands on. The relationship between the disembodied building units forms a series of openings and outdoor spaces, creating connectivity, activity and flow between and around the city hall.

A city hall is a building for the inhabitants, a building where the administration of inhabitants is being held but also where the people are encouraged to take part in public space and give it their form. The city hall is a room for social interactions and architecture’s interaction with local democracy. Tensta was built in the late 1960s, an area characterized by quickly built concrete slabs and a city plan based on traffic separation. The defined level differences are interesting to the project, and the city hall became a way to break up the determined levels. The building connects Tensta's walk to a submerged, somewhat forgotten square, and becomes a link through Tensta. An extension of the public spaces, as a living room to the district. The city hall program is an interaction between open and closed, in its way to interact with people and conduct business. The public encounters enclosed departments and walls of privacy, which become characterizing to the architectural design. Closed rooms to open halls, and durable concrete construction to bare wood tones and agile glass panes.<br>Ett stadshus är en byggnad för folket, en byggnad där folkets administration tar plats och där folket uppmuntras att ta del i det publika rummet och ge det sin egen form. Stadshuset är ett rum för sociala interaktioner och arkitekturens interaktion med den lokala demokratin. Tensta byggdes under det sena 60-talet, ett område präglat av snabbt byggda betonglameller och en stadsplan baserad på trafikseparering. Nivåskillnaderna är intressanta varpå stadshuset blev ett sätt att bryta upp de bestämda nivåerna. Byggnaden kopplar Tenstas promenadstråk till ett nedsänkt, någorlunda bortglömt torg och blir en länk genom Tensta. En förlängning av Tenstas offentliga platser, likt ett vardagsrum till stadsdelen. Stadshusets program är ett samspel mellan öppet och slutet i sitt sätt att möta folk och föra verksamheter. Den publika prägeln möter slutna avdelningar och sekretessväggar vilket fick prägla den arkitektoniska gestaltningen. Slutna rum mot öppna hallar, och en beständig betongstomme möter nakna trätoner och nätta glaspartier.

<p>ABSTRACT
Hail poses a substantial threat to life and property in the state of Florida. These losses could be minimized through better understanding of the relationships between atmospheric variables that impact hail formation in Florida. Improving hail forecasting in Florida requires analyzing a number of meteorological parameters and synoptic data related to hail formation.
NOAA archive data was retrieved to create a database that was used to categorize text files of hail days. The text files were entered into the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Earth System Research Laboratory website to create National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research Reanalysis maps of atmospheric variables for Florida hail days as well as days leading to the hail event. These data were then analyzed to determine the relationship between variables that affect hail formation, in general, across different regions and seasons in Florida using Statistical Product and Service Solutions. The reasoning for the differing factors affecting hail formation between regions, seasons and hail sizes were discussed, as well as forecasting suggestions relating to region and month in Florida. The study found that the majority of all hail that occurs in Florida is during the wet season. A low Lifted Index, high Precipitable Water and lower than average Sea Level Pressure, in most cases, is present during hail days in Florida. Furthermore, results show that Vector Wind magnitude increases as hail size increases. Additionally, several atmospheric variables useful to studying hail events, such as Lifted Index, Precipitable Water, Sea Level Pressure, Vector Wind and Temperature have significant correlations with each other depending on the region and season being observed. Strong correlations between low Lifted Index, high Precipitable Water values and the occurrence of hail events are discussed, as well as the relationship between temperature anomalies at various pressure levels and the occurrence of hail events.

Adorno sobre cultura e formação, tencionando pelos pressupostos teóricos dos Estudos Culturais. Discute-se a partir de algumas teses sobre a cultura em Theodor W. Adorno a assertiva de Stuart Hall sobre a necessidade de uma nova configuração do social na contemporaneidade, assertiva essa com a qual corroboram certas argumentações de Nestor Garcia Canclini, o qual enaltece a indústria cultural em sua dimensão integradora, apesar do efeito deletério de uma globalização concebida de forma unilateral pelos países centrais em detrimento dos periféricos. Esta discussão é materializada nos romances, como exemplo do campo empírico, de Marcel Proust: Un amour de Swann; de Mia Couto: Um rio chamado tempo, uma casa chamada terra e de João Guimarães Rosa: Grande Sertão: Veredas, cujos personagens Swann, Marianinho e Diadorim (Reinaldo), cada um, na sua particularidade, desnuda as implicações dialéticas da formação objetiva do sujeito no mundo contemporâneo. O objetivo deste trabalho, portanto, é alcançar melhor compreensão desse tema, por meio: 1) da análise qualitativa de alguns escritos de Adorno, Hall e Canclini; 2) da verificação de como se localiza neles o conceito de cultura; 3) das leituras que estabelecem interfaces (aproximações e distanciamentos) conceituais entre Adorno e Hall frente à problemática da formação; 4) da recepção dos romances em alguns interlocutores privilegiados de Proust, Couto e Rosa. Os três personagens são analisados enquanto sujeitos que colocaram em prática sua formação, elaborando certos mecanismos subjacentes a sua subjetividade. Estes personagens são tomados como exemplo guia que materializa os pressupostos teóricos em torno da formação no âmbito da Teoria Crítica (Th. Adorno) e dos Estudos Culturais (S. Hall e G. Canclini). Outra razão que nos levou a escolher esses romances, além de sua beleza literária, é sem dúvida, de ordem pessoal, pois os três personagens de certa forma refletem um percurso vivencial semelhante ao nosso, uma vez que, ao viver tais experiências, nos defrontamos com outras tantas pessoas que resultaram de formações entrecruzadas, ou seja, pessoas que sintetizam as diversas realidades das quais foram fruto. Vivenciamos, pois, na realidade, como os mecanismos culturais e os dispositivos formativos são acionados diante de situações que requerem uma atitude diferenciada. Este trabalho argumenta ainda que a idéia da formação e o contexto cultural exercem um papel central na elaboração dos mecanismos culturais enquanto condição para a realização do sujeito. A teoria crítica e os Estudos Culturais, nossas principais referências, figuraram, neste trabalho, enquanto instrumentos (tecnologias, meios) dos quais nos valemos para tentar compreender um pouco mais algumas das mazelas universais representadas, em certa medida, pelos personagens acima analisados. THS118) operando em um modo diferencial. Cada sensor tem um circuito préamplificador
associado a ele e a diferencia de voltagem entre eles é
amplificada com um ganho variável de 30 - 7000. Os sensores Hall têm
dimensões típicas de 1,5 x 1,7 x 0,6 mm3 e foram montados separados um
do outro de 0,71 mm, em uma configuração espacial planar. O magnetômetro
foi testado usando tanto correntes dc (Idc) quanto correntes ac (Iac), variando a
amplitude de 0,1 a 3 mA. Um amplificador lock-in foi utilizado para a leitura
da voltagem Hall para as correntes ac. O controle e a aquisição dos dados
foram feitos utilizando uma interface GPIB e o software Labview. A freqüência
f das correntes Iac foram variadas de 10 Hz até 1 kHz. O magnetômetro Hall
foi montado em um refrigerador de ciclo fechado do tipo Displex (Advanced
Research Systems) o qual permite uma variação de temperatura no intervalo
de 4 800 K, podendo, inclusive, ser facilmente colocado na presença de um
campo magnético. Para aplicações de campos baixos (até 0,003T), foi utilizado
um par de bobinas de Helmholtz, enquanto que para campos maiores (até 1
T) foi usado um magneto permanente (Advancing Magnetic-eletronics). A
amostra a ser investigada é fixada nas vizinhanças da área ativa de um dos
sensores, produzindo uma componente de campo perpendicular à superfície do
sensor. Esse sinal, por usa vez, é proporcional a magnetização da amostra. A
calibração do magnetômetro foi feita usando uma amostra padrão de Ni, de
geometria cilíndrica e com 6,1 mg produzida pela Oxford Instruments. Em
seguida, o magnetômetro foi utilizado para medidas de histerese das ligas
ferromagneticamente moles Fe64Co7Zr6Nd3B10 e Fe56Co7Ni3B10, a temperatura
ambiente, e do nanocompósito (Fe0,6Co0,4)0,35(MnO)0,65 para temperaturas desde
ambiente até 10 K. Os resultados obtidos para as ligas amorfas foram comparados com os obtidos usando medidas de susceptibilidade ac em baixas
freqüências. Para o nanocompósito (Fe0,6Co0,4)0,35(MnO)0,65 foi possível estudar o
comportamento da magnetização de saturação, da remanência e do campo
coercivo em função da temperatura. Esses resultados estão em acordo com os
obtidos na mesma amostra por magnetometria por amostra vibrante. A
dependência do efeito exchange-bias com o campo magnético de resfriamento
HR foi investigado pela primeira vez. Foi observado que o campo de
exchange-bias HE cresce inicialmente com HR, apresenta um valor máximo de
22,5 mT em torno de HR = 500 mT e, em seguida, decresce
monotonicamente com o aumento de HR. A dependência de HE com HR foi
explicada qualitativamente utilizando o modelo proposto por Kagerer, Binek e
Kleemann

Strängnäs is a small scaled eclectic city where houses date from different centuries. This is shown in their different architectural styles. Main idea with this project is to adjust the City Hall building to the place that we were assigned. I wanted to create a building that is going to meet the area requirements, which is around 1600 sqm of work and activity area, and at the same time is going to be experienced as a small-scale building.<br>Strängnäs är en småskalig eklektisk stad där husen daterar från olika sekelskiften och är därmed utförda i olika stilar. Huvudidén med mitt projekt är att anpassa den nya stadshallen till området. Jag vill skapa en byggnad som kommer att uppfylla kraven på det gene- rösa programmet, med ca 1600kvm arbets- och aktivitetsyta, men som ska kännas småskalig.

Mitt förslag till Strängnäs stadshall bottnar i en frågeställning och en undersökning av vad en stadshall är och vem den är till för. Som utgångspunkt har jag undersökt basilikan, vars funktion i staden jag tycker är intressant: som torghall i det antika Rom användes den till allt från rättsliga förhandlingar till handel. Det rum som basilikan var i staden saknar nästan sin motsvarighet idag, där de enda offentliga och tillgängliga platserna som finns är gatorna och torgen utomhus. Stadshallen i Strängnäs är som en tolkning av basilikan: ett inomhustorg som medborgarna i Strängnäs har tillträde till. Stadshallens tomt ligger intill Västervikstorget som sommartid är en knytpunkt för det folk, - och kulturliv som präglar Strängnäs. Hallen blir en förlängning av Västervikstorget och skapar rum för rörelse och liv iområdet året om.<br>My proposal to the Town Hall in Strängnäs is based on an analysis of what a town hall is - and who it is accessible for. As a starting point I studied the basilica, whose function in the city I find interesting. As a town hall in the antique Rome it was used for many various purposes, such as legal negotiations and trade. The space that the basilica was in the city has almost no equivalent in the city today, where the only public and accessible spaces available are the streets and the squares. The Town Hall in Strängnäs is an interpretation of the basilica: an indoors square accessible to the citizens of Strängnäs. The plot of the Town Hall is next to Västervikstorget, which during the summers functions as a junction point for the social and cultural life of Strängnäs. The Town Hall becomes an extension of Västervikstorget and creates space for the motion and vivacity in the area throughout the year.

Nynäshamn is a city with a rich industrial history, its municipal arms consist of partly an achor, and partly three gears. The identity of the city has been greatly impacted by the industry which today consist mainly of the harbour and the oil refinery. I strive in my project to bring together the forms of industrial Nynäshamn with the urban fabric of the inhabited parts of the city. A city is the sum of its parts although these parts tend to be conflicting within many cities causing the city to become an alien to its inhabitants. The city hall in my proposal is an attempt to overbridge the conflicts within the city´s narrative and a place for its inhabitants to meet.<br>Ett kommunvapen berättar om en stad präglad av 1900-talets industri, ett ankare symboliserar sjöfarten och tre kugghjul den industri som kommit att definiera stadens identitet. Idag utgör stadens oljeraffinaderi en tredjedel av den bebyggda ytan i Nynäshamn och det är det första som fångar ens blick om en skulle komma sjövägen. Oljecisternernas cylindriska form har en viktig plats i den växande staden och utgör en särpräglad typologi likt San Gimignanos torn eller Hollands väderkvarnar. Det är sannolikt att vi i framtiden gått vidare till andra energikällor, oljecisternerna kommer då finnas kvar för oss att finna nya funktioner till. Stadshusplatsen in Nynäshamn is a square with good prerequisites to become an oasis for the citys inhabitants. Though today the current town hall, a low-rise building, closes the square towards the south. The old town hall has lost its function as a uniting building and together with Folkets Hus, they form a wall that blocks the sun and the view towards the sea. The assignment was to draw a proposal for a new town hall where the current town hall is situated and to explore how the new structure can relate to an adjacent high-rise building and create new dimensions and prerequisites to the square. First of all, I chose to create a passage between Folkets Hus and the new town hall. This to let the sun shine in on the square and create a connection between the square and what is today the back of the town hall but has potential of becoming a sunny meeting point for the citizens of Nynäshamn. To find ways to create a connection in terms of design between the high-rise building and my proposal I looked at the base floor of the high-rise building, which consists of a pillar arcade. Based on this arcade two grids, one primary and one secondary, arise and creates the conditions of the building both spatially and structurally. In the intersections of the two grids I’ve placed pillars, one larger and one smaller type, to define spatialities both outside and inside the building. The two different pillar types also help to define in which zone of the building you are located. The smaller pillars represent a more intimate zone and the larger ones the public zones. In the more intimate zone, two cores of service have been placed. Furthermore, no fixed walls are used but the rooms are defined by columns and three different wall types: a light wall, a flexible sliding wall and a movable fabric wall.<br>Stadshusplatsen in Nynäshamn is a square with good prerequisites to become an oasis for the citys inhabitants. Though today the current town hall, a low-rise building, closes the square towards the south. The old town hall has lost its function as a uniting building and together with Folkets Hus, they form a wall that blocks the sun and the view towards the sea. The assignment was to draw a proposal for a new town hall where the current town hall is situated and to explore how the new structure can relate to an adjacent high-rise building and create new dimensions and prerequisites to the square. First of all, I chose to create a passage between Folkets Hus and the new town hall. This to let the sun shine in on the square and create a connection between the square and what is today the back of the town hall but has potential of becoming a sunny meeting point for the citizens of Nynäshamn. To find ways to create a connection in terms of design between the high-rise building and my proposal I looked at the base floor of the high-rise building, which consists of a pillar arcade. The quantum Hall effect occurs when a conductor carrying a current is placed in a perpendicular magnetic field. If certain conditions are met, such as strong magnetic field and low temperature, the resistivity becomes quantised, taking values of integer or fractional multiples of h/e2. By analysing the movement of electrons in a magnetic field classically and quantum mechanically information about the integer quantum Hall effect and the fractional quantum Hall effect can be gathered, using the two different gauge potentials of Landau gauge and Symmetric gauge. Resistance Metrology is one field of study that the quantum Hall effect has greatly impacted by providing a way to universally maintain the ohm, with significantly less uncertainty than previously.<br>Den kvantmekaniska hall-effekten uppstår när en strömbärande ledare placeras i ett vinkelrätt magnetfält. When thinking about Stuart Hall’s theoretical legacy, ‘power’ is probably not the first term that comes to mind. Concepts like representation, racism, ethnicity, encoding/decoding, articulation, conjunctural analysis etc. more readily suggest themselves and structure our reception of his work. Yet nonetheless, when taking a closer look, his entire oeuvre may be said to be permeated, on different levels, by themes that touch upon the issue of power, not least in connection with the concepts listed above. The latent omnipresence of power in Hall’s thinking is perhaps most readily detectable on the meta-level on which he situates and positions himself as a cultural-studies scholar, and it is this level that hence will be addressed first. In the second section, Hall’s view of power on the economic, social and state levels will be considered, particularly by pointing out his indebtedness to Antonio Gramsci’s conception of hegemonic power. In an attempt to let Hall speak for himself as much as possible, the section will provide quite a few quotes, many of which will be taken from the collaboratively written Policing the Crisis, in order to shed some light on his – and his co-authors’ – ideas about power. The third section attempts a systematisation of the issues raised, particularly by integrating a Foucauldian perspective on power, which was nearly as important for Hall as the Gramscian. The last section will conclude by returning to the beginning, reconsidering Hall’s self-positioning within the power/knowledge nexus that structures the discourse of cultural studies.

<p> The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is the archetype of the strongly correlated systems and the topologically ordered phases. Unlike the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) which can be explained by single-particle physics, FQHE exhibits many emergent properties that are due to the strong correlation among many electrons. In this Thesis, among those emergent properties of FQHE, we focus on the guiding-center metric, the guiding-center Hall viscosity, the guiding-center spin, the intrinsic electric dipole moment and the orbital entanglement spectrum. </p><p> Specifically, we show that the discontinuity of guiding-center Hall viscosity (a bulk property) at edges of incompressible quantum Hall fluids is associated with the presence of an intrinsic electric dipole moment on the edge. If there is a gradient of drift velocity due to a non-uniform electric field, the discontinuity in the induced stress is exactly balanced by the electric force on the dipole. </p><p> We show that the total Hall viscosity has two distinct contributions: a "trivial'' contribution associated with the geometry of the Landau orbits, and a non-trivial contribution associated with guiding-center correlations. </p><p> We describe a relation between the intrinsic dipole moment and "momentum polarization'', which relates the guiding-center Hall viscosity to the "orbital entanglement spectrum(OES)''. </p><p> We observe that using the computationally-more-onerous "real-space entanglement spectrum (RES)'' in the momentum polarization calculation just adds the trivial Landau-orbit contribution to the guiding-center part. This shows that all the non-trivial information is completely contained in the OES, which also exposes a fundamental topological quantity γ = c˜ − ν, the difference between the "chiral stress-energy anomaly'' (or signed conformal anomaly) and the chiral charge anomaly. This quantity characterizes correlated fractional quantum Hall fluids, and vanishes in integer quantum Hall fluids which are uncorrelated.</p>

Le sujet de cette thèse concerne le transport en alternatif à basse fréquence dans les états de bords de l'effet Hall quantique. L'objet d'étude est la partie imaginaire de l'admittance, inductive ou capacitive, des échantillons de Hall. Dans un gaz d'électrons bidimensionnel, le transport à très basse température sous champ magnétique quantifiant, se fait dans des canaux de bord unidimensionnels. Ces canaux ont une capacité quantique propre et sont par ailleurs couplés par l'interaction électrostatique.Nos échantillons sont fabriqués à partir d'hétérojonctions GaAlAs/GaAs et n'ont pas de grille pour n'exhiber que leur propriétés capacitives intrinsèques. Deux topologies sont étudiées dans cette thèse : les barres de Hall et les Corbinos, de géométrie circulaire. La topologie permet de distinguer 2 comportements dans le transport en alternatif.Sont d'abord présentées les mesures à l'impédancemètre de la partie imaginaire de l'impédance et les spectres de réactance, pour les barres de Hall en fonction de la fréquence. Nous utilisons des mesures 3 points ou bien 2 points, mais toujours en 4 fils, et révélons la nature inductive des état de bords. Nous montrons que l'inductance est inversement proportionnelle à la densité d'état, comme le prévoit le calcul de l'inductance quantique d'un canal 1D. Le formalisme de Buttiker permet en outre de comprendre cette dépendance en terme de capacité mutuelle des états de bords.Nous mesurons également la partie imaginaire de l'admittance et traçons les spectres de susceptance des Corbinos, qui s'avèrent être des capacités parfaites. Nos résultats s'interprètent en faisant intervenir la capacité quantique des états de bords.Enfin, nous montrons que l'effet Hall dans un échantillon type barre, peut être vu comme l'effet d'apparition d'une inductance, et ceci même à haute température. Cette inductance cinétique est le résultat de l'augmentation du temps de dissipation de l'énergie sur les phonons, avec le champ magnétique<br>In a two dimensional electron gas, low energy transport in presence of a magnetic field occurs in chiral 1D channels located on the edges of the sample. In the Buttiker’s description of a.c. quantum transport, the “emittance” determines the amplitude of the imaginary part of the admittance, whose sign and physical meaning are determined by the topology: in the case of an Hall bar the emittance is an inductance, while it is a capacitance in the case of a corbino sample.Emittance is related to the density of states and to the drift velocity of carriers. So quantum capacitances and inductances give access to the velocity of the charge carriers through the transit time/dwell time of charges in the quantum circuit.We performed systematic studies on samples with different topologies : Hall bars and Corbino disks. Our samples have no gate, which makes us able to observe the inner properties of the quantum states. We have measured the ac admittance of quantum Hall samples using standard electrical techniques in the [0.1-100] kHz frequency range, at low temperature under high magnetic field.We measured kinetic inductances of Hall bars with three contacts and showed the perfect inductive nature of edge states. We measured quantum capacitances of Corbino disks as well. In both topologies we observed the close relation between the emittance and the density of states. We show also the proportionality between the emittance and the length of the circuit. We obtain the transit time of electrons through the device, and finally the drift velocity on edge states.At high temperature we still observe an inductive behavior of Hall bars, induced by increase of energy relaxation time with magnetic field

Located in eastern London and beside the Olympic legacy there is this knotty hood, called Hackney Wick. A public realm has been proposed in the London Borough of Hackney local development masterplan for this neighbourhood. The project is a communal hall settled in the heart of this town context, has been challenged to tie with the dodgy surroundings. Coming from Olympic park, passing over the separating river and going to Victoria Park, is the main walking and cycling path. Also having the bus route on the same side, makes the northern side more exposed to the people. Facing the northern side of the site is the overground which generates views from the train to the project. As a result, in all the studied schemes, it has been tried to have a big opening looking towards this side. Observing the whole hood, you will find out the context is dominated by typical London brick walls, mostly filled with graffiti arts. This creates a special character for the area, and at the same time brings out some dodgy views. So the idea was to get benefit of the existing wall in the boundary of the site, as a tool to block the ugly views and create an inner paradise, and at the same time, with the aim of the brick nature of that wall, relate to the character of the context. However eventually, it ended up to propose to rebuild the wall with reused bricks, and cover the new added parts in white plaster. So finally, there would be this perception as if there is a new object over the existing, and the old brick wall remains at the bottom exposed to graffiti arts and keeps the same nature as it used to have.

We first consider an interacting two-dimensional electron gas in a ballistic quantum wire in an external magnetic field. Self-consistent calculations are made of the electrostatic Hall potential (EHP), the local chemical potential (LCP), and current density in a uniform ballistic quantum wire containing two-dimensional electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field B when either one or two subbands are occupied. The corresponding Hall resistances, REHP and RLCP, are also calculated. The former is nearly linear in B in spite of subband depopulation. The latter is quantised but the quantisation steps are rounded because of overlap of the forward and backward going wave functions. Secondly, self-consistent calculations are also made of wave functions and the two kinds of Hall resistances for the same system in a weak perpendicular magnetic field when several subbands are occupied. We find intermittent quenching of the Hall resistance associated with the local chemical potential as the electron density varies. The quenching is due to the overlap of opposite-going wave functions in the same subband, which is enhanced significantly by the singularity of the density of states at the subband minima aa well as by Coulomb interactions between the electrons. Finally, with a, model calculation, we demonstrate that a non-invasive measurement of intrinsic quantum Hall effect defined by the local chemical potential in a ballistic quantum wire can be achieved with the aid of a pair of voltage leads which are separated 9Y potential barriers from the wire. Biittiker's formula is used to determine the chemical potential being measured and is shown to reduce exactly to the local chemical potential in the limit of strong potential confinement in the voltage leads. Conditions for quantisation of Hall resistance and measuring local chemical potential are given.

This thesis consists of two parts, both of which involve the study of algebraic structures constructed via the multiplication of modules. In the first part we look at Hall algebras. We consider the Hall algebra of a cyclic quiver algebra with relations of length two and present a multiplication formula for the explicit calculation of products in this algebra. We then look at the case of a cyclic quiver with two vertices and describe the corresponding composition algebra as a quotient of the positive part of a quantised enveloping algebra of type Ã<sub>1</sub> We then look at quotients of Hall algebras of self-injective algebras. We give an abstract result describing the quotient of such a Hall algebra by the ideal generated by isomorphism classes of projective modules, and also a more explicit result describing quotients of Hall algebras of group algebras for cyclic 2-groups and some related polynomial algebras. The second part of the thesis deals with Green rings. We compare the Green rings of a group algebra and the corresponding Jennings algebra for certain p-groups. It is shown that these two Green rings are isomorphic in the case of a cyclic p-group. In the case of the Klein four group it is shown that the two Green rings are not isomorphic, but that there exist quotients of these rings which are isomorphic. It is conjectured that the corresponding quotients will also be isomorphic in the case of a dihedral 2-group. The properties of these quotients are studied, with the aim of producing evidence to support this conjecture. The work on Green rings also includes some results on the realisation of quotients of Green rings as group rings over ℤ.
