McCormick, Kaitlin. "Early Scottish museum collections of Haida argillite carving." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22827.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about four historical collections of Haida argillite carvings now at the National Museum of Scotland, the University of Aberdeen Museums and the Perth Museum and Art Gallery. Since the early nineteenth century Haida artists have carved argillite, a carbonaceous shale, into objects featuring Haida and European-inspired motifs, for trade or sale to non-Haida others. Scots Colin Robertson, William Mitchell, James Hector and John Rae acquired argillite as part of broader collections from the Northwest Coast of Canada made during the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Each of these men was employed by, or affiliated with the Hudson’s Bay Company. This thesis questions how the meanings and statuses of these objects, collected and deposited in Scottish museums between the 1820s and 1860s, have changed over the nearly two centuries of their existence. Research at these three museums, and at British and Canadian archives, provided the material that shed light on the historical circumstances of the approximately 30 objects constituting these collections. Semi-structured interviews with Haida carvers, community members and experts, and with museum curators elicited insights into the ways these objects are made meaningful today. The thesis examines the collections in four key contexts. First, it explores the ways in which they have been displayed and interpreted at the three museums, shedding light on the trajectories by which museums have represented the objects of others. Secondly, it describes the context in which the argillite carvings were produced, circulated and collected by sketching the social and political character of the Northwest Coast as it transformed through the decades of the fur trade to European colonization. How these objects transformed in status and value according to the agendas of their collectors is the third context, which reflects the character of relationships between Indigenous peoples and newcomers. Finally, I resituate these collections in the context of contemporary Haidas’ perspectives on the value and meaning of argillite carving(s), and propose that these objects can be understood as “inalienable commodities.” The argillite carvings in these Scottish museum collections are objects of exchange, produced and circulated in the contact zone of the mid-nineteenth century Northwest Coast. As such, they are windows into relationships between Indigenous and European people during this period. Collected as curiosities but remade into objects of science, biography and art, this study traces their shifting statuses as they have moved through various regimes of value. This thesis therefore characterizes the exchanges that have occurred around these objects as ongoing and dynamic.

Karim, Asef Mohammed Iqbal. "Orthodontic treatment need of adolescents in Haida Gwaii, Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44372.

Abstract:
Introduction: The aims of the cross-sectional study were to determine the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need according to the Index of Complexity, Outcome, and Need (ICON) among schoolchildren of the Aboriginal Island Community of Haida Gwaii in Northwestern British Columbia, Canada. Methods: Out of 535 schoolchildren, 215 (90 boys and 125 girls) agreed to participate in the clinical examination. An examiner, trained in occlusal indices, assessed orthodontic treatment need in children employing the ICON score and the ICON complexity grade. In addition, a questionnaire was modified and used to measure the schoolchildren’s expectations of and self- perceived need for orthodontic treatment. Out of the 215 schoolchildren that were clinically examined, 192 were old enough to comprehend the questions in the questionnaire and were capable of completing the questionnaire without any assistance. Results: The mean age (N=215) was 12.9±2.8 years. Of the examined schoolchildren, 67% have Aboriginal ancestry (at least one parent is Aboriginal). The mean ICON score was 43.5±26.2. There were no statistically significant differences in ICON scores regarding gender (t-test, P=0.207), ethnicity (t-test, paternal ethnicity P=0.886 and maternal ethnicity, P=0.389), or school (ANOVA with Post Hoc Bonferroni Adjustment P=0.317). Overall, 43.7% of the schoolchildren needed orthodontic treatment (ICON > 43). Based on the ICON complexity, 31% of the schoolchildren had moderate to very difficult malocclusions to treat. Adolescents (N=192) with higher ICON complexity scores (more complicated malocclusions) felt a greater need for orthodontic treatment, for extractions, that treatment would give them confidence, and that they were willing to be treated either on island or off island (One way ANOVA with Post Hoc Bonferroni Adjustment, P<0.001, 0.014, 0.002, <0.001, 0.007 respectively) compared to those with lower ICON scores. Conclusions: There is need for orthodontic treatment among Haida Gwaii schoolchildren (43.7% of adolescents need orthodontic treatment according to their ICON scores). As 31% had moderate to very difficult malocclusions to treat, specialty orthodontic services are recommended. The adolescents’ self-perceived need for orthodontic treatment corresponded to their clinical need; i.e. schoolchildren with higher ICON complexity scores felt a greater need for orthodontic treatment than those with lower ICON complexity scores.

Smith, Margaret. "Mapping Kaay Llnagaay : Indigenous cultural visuality in Haida Gwaii, B.C." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42258.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis maps out the wide range of knowledge and practices that form the field of Haida cultural visuality. Writing from an Indigenous space, which is interdisciplinary and relational, this thesis shows that culture encapsulates the relationships, responsibilities, practices and values made manifest through the actions and materialism of a people. Indigenous culture is a living experience that is informed by a wide range of relations including the use of tools and mediums of Western institutions. This thesis aims to illuminate the inalienable relationships between the past practices of Western anthropological institutions and the current movements within Indigenous owned and operated cultural centres, with a specific emphasis on research conducted at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay, in Haida Gwaii, B.C. Canada. Through the lens of cultural pedagogy, I illustrate how the Haida Nation is using education and representation as a tool to heal from cultural genocide. Within this context, I examine a wide range of international discourse and map out how, using a range of responses, the Haida have formed this emerging terrain. How have Indigenous people, caught between a European cultural system and their own traditional knowledge bases responded to appropriation, representation and pedagogy? How have they resisted and how do they continue to resist colonial cultural oppression? What are the cultural values and responsibilities that motivate Indigenous people to build their own cultural centres? How do they use these centres as pedagogical sites towards cultural regeneration? How do these sites further agendas of self-representation, cultural protection and self-representation? This thesis will show how the Skidegate Haida community has responded creatively to these issues and has created a pedagogy that continues to reiterate their relationships, protect and construct knowledge and is active within the Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay.

Reid, David A. "Reach-scale contributions of road-surface sediment to the Honna River, Haida Gwaii, B.C." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/50061.

Full text
Abstract:
Unpaved resource road surfaces may act as dominant sources of fine sediment to streams, yet their relative contribution to in-channel sediment yields remains poorly understood. Significant quantities of road-surface sediment have been observed entering the Honna River, B.C, a 5th order channel located is close proximity to a major, intensively used resource road. In September 2012, a reach of the Honna River was selected for measurement and instrumentation to compile a sediment balance with a focus on the relative importance of road surface sediment over an annual scale. An additional four months of suspended-sediment data were collected at 6 locations in the reach to determine spatial and temporal dynamics of suspended-sediment concentrations and yields. Road surface sediment contributed 19% ± 6% of the total annual fine sediment balance for the reach, even though only ~20% of the road area was an effective sediment source. Persistent clockwise hysteresis was observed in the SSC-discharge relation in the main river channel, but was not as apparent in ditch drainage channels. As a proportion of total input, road surface material ranged from 0.5% to 15% during dry conditions from April to the end of September, and from 5% to 70% in the wet season from October to the end of March. Road surface material appears likely to settle on the river channel bed during low flow conditions, but only temporarily, and in small quantities relative to natural sediment sources. Additional research is needed to assess basin-scale contributions of road surface sediment.

Baird, Jill Rachel. "Landed wisdoms : collaborating on museum education programmes with the Haida Gwaii Museum at Kaay Llnagaay." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/34296.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an adaptive case study/autoethnography used to examine the collaborative development of educational programming at the Haida Gwaii Museum at Kaay Llnagaay, in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. The collaboration involves First Nations and non-First Nations working in a First Nations community museum context and seeks to learn ways to develop museum education programming that reflects Haida ways of knowing and to transfer this learning to non-First Nations museums. The study is grounded in the intersecting theories of Indigenous knowledge systems, postcolonialism and feminist poststructuralism, and critical and collaborative museologies. The research process involved a mix of methods including personal journaling, photo-documentation, participant interviews and observations. Fieldwork was undertaken over a sixteen month period. Kirkness and Barnhardt’s (1991) 4Rs were used to critically examine the collaborative process. The themes of relationship, and place and land were added to responsibility, reciprocity, relevance and respect. The results demonstrated that reciprocity and relevance were processes of give and take between colleagues, where the needs of all participants to see value in the process and be proud of the outcomes were recognized as critical for success. A major finding is that respectful relationships between First Nation and non-First Nations are needed for positive and productive collaborations and essential if the work undertaken is to foreground Indigenous knowledge in ways not normally incorporated into main-stream museum education programming. This study shows that through committed relationship building, spending time getting to know the people and the place, museum colleagues can contribute to a post-colonial museum practice, one argued here as a liminal museology. This means adapting established educational practices, listening and waiting for relevant local options to emerge.

Maillard, Morgane. "From deer abundance to soil properties : A case study in the forests of Haida Gwaii." Thesis, Montpellier, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019MONTG043.

Full text
Abstract:
The past century witnessed a dramatic increase in deer abundance in North America and Western Europe that triggered profound changes in the structure of temperate forests. If these changes are today well characterised, the effects of abundant deer belowground in these forests remain unclear. Deer can interfere with the soil through waste deposition, trampling, and reduction of litter quantity and quality by preferential browsing of palatable plants. What are the consequences of these interactions for the soil? To answer this question, we studied the soil response to the colonisation and culling of Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) in the forests of Haida Gwaii. We found that deer slowed-down litter decomposition by reducing litter quality. They also modified microbial community structure and ability in decomposing carbon via soil trampling. Most of these effects became only apparent in the long term, hence questioning the results obtained through short term studies

Abstract:
This illustrated dissertation gives an interpretation of two north west coast native cultures (haida and coast salish) based on personal observations. It is a comparative study of past and present artistic and spiritual traditions after a long interruption due to colonization. Oral literature as well as visual art and ceremonies are examined while the links between the three are underlined. The prestigious haida art is studied through the examples of four famous artists : charles edenshaw in the past, bill reid, robert davidson, and jim hart in present days. Coast salish art, though much less developed, is proven highly valuable through the examples of contemporary powerful carver susan point and weavers debra and robyn sparrow who have renewed the former weaving tradition. Close attention is paid to the coast salish need for private spiritual knowledge and to the power of that knowledge expressed in continuing discrete ceremonies (as opposed to the more visible, recently revived ceremonies of the haida). The study of sxwayxwey masks, by levi-strauss and especially by wayne suttles, stresses various aspects of the secretive salish culture and the difference between appearance and reality. Finally, beyond the local context, this dissertation addresses the role of religious art, especially animal representation, on the north pacific coast as compared to medieval art in france. This final discussion on art concludes the dissertation although a few personal remarqs end this paper on a subjective note

Dean, Michael. ""What they are doing to the land they are doing to us" : environmental politics on Haida Gwaii." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13912.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses the development of Native environmental politics on Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, since the late 1970’s. During that time, concerns among the Haida about the impacts of industrial logging on their culture led to the emergence of a sustained, innovative challenge to the existing regime of resource extraction on the islands as well as the larger colonial structures on which it was premised. As a result, environmental activism became a means for the Haida to pursue decolonization outside the official channels of the land claims process. In particular this paper focuses on the conflict surrounding logging in the area of South Moresby Island culminating in the creation of the Gwaii Haanas National Park, which was the first National Park to be co-managed by the Government of Canada and an indigenous nation. By tracing the development of environmental activism on Haida Gwaii it contributes to an understanding of the ways that recent Native environmental movements have formulated indigenous identity and drawn on cultural traditions as well as their experience of colonialism. It also contributes to debates surrounding co-management and TEK by showing how the development of Haida environmental management structures occurred in conjunction with the development of a Haida environmental politics without which it would not have been capable of delivering on its liberatory promise.

Full text
Abstract:
An ethnographic approach is used to produce a nuanced investigation of the efforts of the Haida First Nation in British Columbia, Canada, to repatriate the human remains of their ancestors from collections around the world. The result is a contextualisation of Haida repatriation within values and structures of kinship—a position that stands in contrast to the frequent use of political or legalistic frameworks to understand repatriation issues. Incorporating Haida sensibilities toward kinship relations is necessary as analyses based in colonial or post-colonial encounters fail to account for the full range of motivating factors, which include the Haida value of yahgudangang (‘to pay respect’ and ‘to be fit for respect’) and the agency of ancestors after death. Furthermore, it is argued that kinship is the predominant structure through which Haidas experience identity, history and memory. Repatriation is therefore approached as a collective space in which kinship and memories are created, as well as a collective space in which remembering occurs. In order to understand how the individual elements comprising the repatriation process reflect and foster the construction of kinship, the expectations and obligations that exist within matrilineages and between moieties are traced, as is their material manifestation in objects, as well as tangible and ephemeral property. The sharing of embodied experiences between generations as a consequence of Haidas’ participation in the process of repatriation is shown to augment collective memory and family histories. The ways in which repatriation is incorporated within individual and collective narratives are explored as a further means of understanding the dynamic between the production of kinship, memory and identity. Avenues for expanding the current findings on repatriation, the connections between memory and kinship, and Northwest Coast scholarship more generally are presented.

Kent, Hannah Patterson. "Developing indicators for human well-being in an ecosystem-based management context : a case study of Haida Gwaii." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/46603.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecosystem-based management (EBM) includes both ecological integrity and human well-being, although it is not clear how human well-being should be measured in an EBM context. Despite efforts to view EBM holistically, the human component is often overlooked or reduced to economic indicators that do not capture the full range of values held by the people affected by EBM policies. The purpose of this case study is to explore, in a region recently participating in EBM planning and policy implementation, human well-being indicators of importance to local residents. Haida Gwaii, an island archipelago located approximately 90 km off the coast of British Columbia (B.C.), Canada provides a particularly compelling case study, as the implementation of EBM on Haida Gwaii includes co-management between the Haida Nation and the Province of B.C. Using semi-structured interviews and constructivist grounded theory methodology, I identified seven categories important for human well-being on Haida Gwaii: employment and economic stability; relationship with the land, ocean and air; health; governance and access to services; culture and community; educated and engaged citizens; and overall well-being. Within these general categories, I also identified 46 specific human well-being indicators important to measure on Haida Gwaii. In addition, I identified concerns study participants had with human well-being indicators developed on the North and Central Coast of British Columbia. The important categories, sub-categories and indicators were integrated to produce three theoretical concepts that characterize what is important for human well-being on Haida Gwaii: 1) Relationship with the land, ocean and air 2) Access to benefits from natural resource development, and 3) Building resilient communities and human capital. Communities working to develop human well-being indicators in similar EBM contexts may find these concepts useful in their work.

Abstract:
This thesis employs Hedlund-de Witt’s (e.g. 2012) Integrative Worldviews Framework as an interpretative lens to explore the ways in which diverse ontological, epistemological and axiological assumptions about the role and nature of ‘nature’ and human agency can be interpreted from ‘geoengineering’ discourse. It does so through an opportunistic case study of the 2012 Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation’s ocean fertilization project. The HSRC case study, anchored in notions of place and identity, marks a novel entry point into social research on geoengineering and facilitates a more situated engagement with geoengineering in keeping with the traditions and tools of ethnography and geography. Through an ‘informed grounded theory’ approach to analysis of the case-study discourse, bolstered by an interpretivist application of Q-Methodology, this thesis develops 7 issue-frames and 3 Qfactors that invoke different interpretations about what it means to be human, about the ‘natural’ or ‘artificial’ quality of technological mediation of the environment and about how knowledge gains legitimacy. This thesis suggests that ‘geoengineering’ will always be performed and expressed through unique ‘surface contents’ and contextually specific meanings. However, interpretative resources described in relation to a range of other geoengineering proposals and through more abstract entry points into thinking about geoengineering also find salience through the study frames. ‘Geoengineering’ in Haida Gwaii connects with wider cultural meanings and literatures that consider the human relationship with nature. Furthermore, the study factors are suggested to have some interpretative overlap with ideal-typical ‘worldview’ heuristics described in earlier literatures that have sought to describe dominant currents of cultural meaning in contemporary Western society. These factors therefore may serve as useful orienting heuristics for conceptualising general homologies of deeper, shared forms of reasoning about the role and nature of ‘nature’ and human agency shaping wider public contestation about geoengineering. Such ‘ecological worldview’ heuristics might help facilitate greater reflexivity in decision-making, but their limitations must remain at the heart of their application. Further research is needed to establish their usefulness for other geoengineering technologies and in other cultural contexts.

Full text
Abstract:
The middle to Upper Cretaceous Queen Charlotte Group is composed of mainly marine shales, sandstones and conglomerates which are subdivided into the Haida, Skidegate and Honna Formations. Total stratigraphic thickness of the Queen Charlotte Group is up to 1700 m. Sandstone and conglomerate dominate the succession and offer some petroleum reservoir potential. The Haida Formation (Albian) is a fining upwards, transgressive succession, which rests unconformably on older rocks. It consists of a basal planar and trough cross-stratified, pebbly sandstone to granule conglomerate unit up to 190 m thick interpreted as fluvial deposits, overlain by 700 m or more of fine to very fine sandstone beds, individually 0.5 to 3 m thick, exhibiting bioturbation and hummocky cross-stratification. The Haida Formation grades upward into at least 200 m of concretionary shale of the Skidegate Formation (Cenomanian-Santonian). The Honna Formation (Coniacian-Santonian), which succeeds unconformably and probably also interfingers with the Skidegate Formation, is locally thicker than 800 m, and is dominated by clast supported pebble to cobble and occasionally boulder conglomerate. Conglomerate beds are sharp based, variably graded, and up to 5 m thick. The depositional environment of the Honna Formation was a marine fan-delta or submarine canyon and fan system passing upward to Cretaceous mudstones and rare subaerial volcanics. Primary grain composition, together with diagenesis, determine the reservoir potential of the Queen Charlotte Group. The pebbly basal part of the Haida Formation has the best reservoir potential, due to high quartz framework grain content which restricts precipitation of authigenic phases. Diagenesis of Queen Charlotte Group sandstones involved carbonate precipitation and dissolution, and the growth of iron-rich chlorite, trioctahedral smectite and mixed-layer phyllosilicates, creating a complex paragenetic sequence. Appreciable secondary porosity development, combined with preservation of intergranular primary porosity, results in visual porosity locally exceeding 15% in the basal Haida. Younger sandstones and conglomerates of the Queen Charlotte Group exhibit uniform diagenetic trends throughout all major outcrops on the Islands, and are generally considered poor reservoir prospects.

Abstract:
This paper considers the Aboriginal population in Canada (composed of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples) and explores the hypothesis that the degree to which traditional knowledge concepts, specifically in the area of mental health, is impacted by the extent to which a given population has achieved self-government. Additionally, from a public policy standpoint, this study – using a single case comparison methodology – examines the gap between intentions outlined in policy formulation stage guidance documents, indicating that the Canadian federal government intends to incorporate traditional knowledge to a greater degree, and evidence present at the policy implementation and budgeting stage, where it is clear that the application of the guidance does not always result in the stated outcome. By looking at similarities and differences between the case populations, this study will highlight some successes in the field of mental health policy, assess the challenges that policymakers face in the area of Aboriginal health, and offer suggestions to arrive at a place in the future where fundamental mental health disparities have been reduced for Aboriginal people in Canada.

Abstract:
The Queen Charlotte plate boundary, near Haida Gwaii, B.C., includes the dextral, strike-slip, Queen Charlotte Fault (QCF) and the subduction interface between the downgoing Pacific and overriding North American plates. In this dissertation, we present a comprehensive repeating earthquake catalogue that represents an effective slip meter for both faults in the area. The catalogue comprises 730 individual earthquakes (0.3 < Mw < 3.5) arranged into 224 repeating earthquake families on the basis of waveform similarity. We employ and extend existing relationships for repeating earthquake magnitudes and slips to provide cumulative slip histories for the QCF and subduction interface in 6 adjacent zones within the study area between 52.3°N and 53.8°N. We find evidence for creep on both faults; however, the creep rate is significantly less than plate motion rates, which suggests partial locking of both faults. The QCF exhibits the highest degrees of locking south of 52.8°N, which indicates that the seismic hazard for a major strike-slip earthquake is highest in the southern part of the study area. The October 28, 2012, Mw 7.8 Haida Gwaii thrust earthquake occurred in our study area and had a significant effect on the plate boundary. The QCF is observed to undergo accelerated, right-lateral slip for 1-2 months following the earthquake. The subduction interface exhibits afterslip thrust motion that persists for the duration of the study period (i.e., 3 years and 2 months after the Haida Gwaii earthquake). Afterslip is greatest on the periphery of the main rupture zone of the Haida Gwaii event.

Stockton, Stephen A. "The effect of introduced Sitka black-tailed deer, Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis Merriam, on the forest understorey plant communities of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia: Pattern, process, and recovery." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29172.

Abstract:
The introduction of Sitka black-tailed deer, Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis Merriam, to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C., Canada) in the late 19th century provides a valuable opportunity to understand the long-term effects of deer populations on the vegetation of the North American temperate rain forest. We conducted two island-based experiments to investigate the effect of Sitka black-tailed deer on the forest understorey vegetation of this archipelago. In the first experiment we used a set of seven small islands (<15 ha) with different browsing histories (more than 50 years of deer presence, less than 20 years of deer presence, and no evidence of any deer presence) to test the effects of deer on plant cover, species richness and community composition. Browsing history was inversely proportional to both vegetation cover and plant species richness. Modification of the forest understorey plant communities followed a series of steps towards a greatly simplified community of plants possessing mechanisms to keep developing plant tissue inaccessible to deer. In the second experiment we utilized the cull of Sitka black-tailed deer from two large islands (295 ha and 170 ha) to investigate the release of forest plant communities from deer browsing. Using a paired-island approach, deer were culled on two experimental islands but remained on three adjacent control islands. Clear increases in species richness and cover as well as changes in the community composition of the forest understorey of experimental islands in the five years following the initiation of culls suggested a quick return to the forest understorey communities thought to exist before deer modification. However, failure of key shrub species to establish, coupled with the development of closed canopy stands of Sitka spruce, Picea sitchensis, suggests possible alternate stable-states for some communities.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to identify and assess the consequences of browsing by a large mammal on forest vegetation in order to understand how a large herbivore can modify forest dynamics. Using the introduction of black-tailed deer to Haida Gwaii islands (Canada), the dendrochronological approach combined with chemical analyses show that there is (1) a cessation in shrub recruitment; (2) an alteration in tree species recruitment ruled by physical defences in spruce and hemlock and (3) a selection of individuals better capable of chemical defence in western red cedar. Historical approach shows that although deer colonisation was rapid across the archipelago, spatial and temporal differences do occur. They are linked to isolation, human pressure, habitat characteristics and climate. Disproportionate changes between species triggered by deer over several decades have resulted in substantial changes in forest dynamics

The diploma thesis focuses on preparing and application of controlling tools in a medium sized growing company. Because of the fact that the system of controlling almost did not exist in that company theoretical part of the thesis describes the term of controlling itself, its goals, functions, possible benefits and ways in which companies can approach to controlling. The practical part of the thesis focuses on three key company fields. It is issue of price formation, material management and controlling of orders. For each of these fields the original (and in view of controlling unsatisfactory) state has been mentioned. After that the way of application of controlling measures in each field has been described. Thanks to sufficient time interval it was possible to evaluate results of applied measures and outline future steps that could lead in improvement of company controlling.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The master degree thesis, "Gje meg handa di: Body-based methodology in singing in music education», intends to examine how body-based methods can be realized in song in music education and the characteristics of the experiences the participants have in working with such a method. The background for the thesis is the teacher's desire to develop her competence and gain a deeper insight into her own practice as a music teacher. The research is based on qualitative methods and emphasizes the researcher's understanding of what an action means to the informants, also called symbolic interactionism. The collection methods used are students’ journals, teacher’s journals, interviews, evaluation form, and video observation, and the experiment was performed in 7th grade in the teacher's own music lessons over a period of five weeks. The thesis is based on a phenomenological approach in the qualitative research design, meaning how things or events "appear" or "show" themselves, as they immediately are perceived by the senses. The thesis looks at the experiences of the pupils and the teacher who have worked with the method and the characteristics of these experiences, and what patterns can be identified. The theoretical frame of reference include Maurice Merleau-Ponty body phenomenology and his view of experience as a body knowledge, and Frede V. Nielsen's Music didactics. The participants experiences are visualized as patterns through theme-centered and person-centered analytic approach as patterns. The study shows that body-based methods in singing in music education can help students to gain a more comprehensive understanding of theoretical concepts and give students more space to be active in their own learning process. Whether the use of body-based method is successful or not, will among other things depend on what the aim of the teaching is and where you are in the teaching process. In this thesis, learning, concentration, motivation and mastering are important concepts discussed in relation to this. An important finding is how body-based method can take the focus away from the content of learning rather than help, it is therefore important that the teacher finds body-based methods that students are motivated by and master. The thesis contributes to new thinking around the use of body-based methods in the learning of theoretical concepts in music and opens up to include the whole human being in the learning process.

Abstract:
In the contemporary world that undergoes constant changes, theatre is changing with certain pace as well. It is only natural as it is an integrant, inseparable part of the society and its make-up. New theatre groups are being established ? some of them last longer and turn into steady regulars on the stage, others are more short-lived due to a variety of factors (art, financial or personal ones). The development of the groups in question could help us outline some of the current tendencies in the theatre world and could contribute to getting a broader and fuller understanding of it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the State of Israel, relationships between Palestinian and Jewish population are a controversial issue that provokes a great social expectation. A taboo that grew especially strong in the context of the conflict of the summer of 2014. Through the study of everyday experiences of Palestinian-Jewish couples that live in Haifa, I will try to show how the social perceptions and reactions about these couples are microcosms of the dynamics of the current Israeli society. To explain why these relationships are so problematic in the country, this thesis analyze the historical and political context of the region, the social and spatial segregation in the country, the legal system and the regulation of the marriages, the identitarian discourse building processes and the gender relationships, amongst other aspects. In this context, the Palestinian-Jewish couples should face difficulties and limitations, so they will need to develop several strategies to confront them. The ethnographic data collected in the fieldwork, the conceptual analysys of the terms used in the country to define the Israeli population and another complementary sources will allow to present a picture of the social, legal and political reality of the State of Israel

Krishnamurthy, M. "Harda Mandi : experiencing change in an agricultural market in central India (1980-2010)." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1333230/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mandis or primary agricultural markets are old and ubiquitous institutions across many parts of the Indian economic landscape. Wherever they have formed, they tend to be dense sites of economic and political activity, connecting town and countryside, and local agricultural markets with larger circuits of commerce and consumption. Mandis are the most important site for the regulation of the critical "first transaction" between farmers and the buyers of their produce, vital points of interaction in complex and intricately intermediated markets for a range of agricultural commodities. Widely portrayed and perceived as entrenched, inefficient and unchanging, the last decade has seen growing calls for the dismantling of the mandi system as the key to the liberalisation and growth of Indian agriculture. Drawing on eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork, this thesis centres on the everyday life, life histories, and relationships of Harda mandi, an agricultural market in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It discovers a dynamic marketplace, constantly interacting with the changing contexts of agricultural production, regional political dynamics, technological developments, processes of reform, and the penetration and contraction of different forms of agro-commercial capital. Part One follows the mandi as a shifting site of regulation over the three decades from 1980 to 2010, as major state-led interventions in agricultural production and marketing interact with local agrarian contexts and political dynamics, producing a range of effects on the mandi, its spatial dimensions, material composition, forms of intermediation, and social relations. Part Two immerses itself in the seasonal dynamics of two contrasting commodity markets – soybean and wheat – analysing the diverse and differential effects on mandi actors, processes, and market management, as global movements and domestic policies are experienced in the market yard. Stepping back, it then traces critical transitions in mandi trade over the last twenty years, describing the dominance and decline of different transactional forms, their economic consequences, and the ethical questions that they raise for local actors and more distant policymakers.
