Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe achievements of Roger Haight's provocative book Jesus Symbol of God rise and fall according to the strengths—and weaknesses—of Haight's symbol theory as applied to his christological project. While this essay expresses a largely positive view of Haight's overall project, it focuses on two key shortcomings pertaining to Haight's symbol theory as it shapes his Christology: first, that his notion of symbol is too low to serve traditional Christology; second, that Haight strips religious symbols of their prophetic power by conceding too much to his audience. Drawing on the symbol theories of Karl Rahner and Paul Ricoeur, to whom Haight is deeply indebted for his understanding of symbol, a path is indicated by which Haight's model could more adequately wed symbol theory and Christology in yielding a more fruitful understanding of Jesus as symbol of God.

Abstract:
Abstract: Religious pluralism, a theme of the Christian theology, has been the object of much discussion in the past years. This shows the existence of a significant plural space for debates that is essential for the theological reflection. However, since the second half of the 90s, some of these theologists have been subject to a critical investigation by the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (CDF). This is the case of Roger Haight, whose book, Jesus, symbol of God (1999) received the CBF’s notification in December 2004, and was said to have “serious doctrinal errors against the Church’s divine and catholic faith”. The objective of this article is to introduce the basic topics of Roger Haight’s book and his hypothesis of a Christology that is open to pluralism and to the inter-religious dialogue.

Abstract:
FAITH AND EVOLUTION: A Grace Filled Naturalism by Roger Haight. Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2019. 241 pages. Paperback; $30.00. ISBN: 9781626983410. *Roger Haight is a Jesuit priest, theologian, and former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. He is the author of numerous books and has taught at Jesuit graduate schools of theology in several locations around the world. In 2004, the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) barred Haight from teaching at the Jesuit Weston School of Theology in response to concerns about his book Jesus Symbol of God (1999). In 2009, the CDF barred him from writing on theology and forbade him to teach anywhere, including at non-Catholic institutions. In 2015, Haight was somewhat reinstated and when Faith and Evolution was published, he was Scholar in Residence at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is regarded as a pioneering theologian who insists that theology must be done in dialogue with the postmodern world. His experiences with censorship have led to widespread debate over how to handle controversial ideas within the Roman Catholic church. *The main presupposition of this book is that Christian theology must be developed from the findings of contemporary science in general and from the process of evolution in particular. In chapter one, Haight briefly summarizes five principles about our world that can be drawn from science. These principles include the following: (1) our universe is unimaginably large; (2) everything exists as constantly dynamic motion and change; (3) everything in motion is governed by layers of law and systems conditioned by randomness; (4) life is marked by conflict, predatory violence, suffering, and death; and (5) science is constantly revealing new dimensions of the universe. *Haight seeks to explain how the disciplines of science and theology relate to each other in chapter two. He begins by summarizing the four positions proposed by Ian Barbour which include conflict, independence, intersection (dialogue), and integration. After presenting several differences between scientific knowledge and faith knowledge, he concludes by suggesting that the independence model is the one that best describes the practices of most scientists and theologians. Any integration between the two disciplines can occur only within the mind of a person who is able to see things from different points of view, and entertain them together. *The next two chapters deal with creation theology: chapter three focuses on what we can "know" about God, and chapter four describes how God acts in an evolutionary world. Several theological conceptions of God are summarized in chapter four. These include the following: God is pure act of being (Thomas Aquinas), God is ground of being (Paul Tillich), God is serendipitous creativity (Gordon Kaufman), God is incomprehensible mystery (Karl Rahner), and God is transcendent presence (Thomas O'Meara). This last definition of God is the one that Haight latches on to, and he mainly refers to God as "creative Presence" throughout the rest of the book. While acknowledging that God is personal, he emphasizes that God is not a "big person in the sky," but a mysterious and loving presence within all material reality. He insists that all anthropomorphic language about God needs to be discarded as it not only misrepresents scientific knowledge but also offends religious sensibility. God is the "within" of all that exists which emphasizes God's immanence, but God is also "totally other than" created reality, which allows for God's transcendence. Haight's understanding of God is basically a form of panentheism, a term that he introduces in chapter three and then revisits in later chapters of the book. *Chapter four, entitled "Creation as Grace," attempts to answer the question of how God acts in an evolutionary world. Haight states that "one can preserve all the assertions of tradition without the mystifying notions of a supernatural order or interventions into the natural order by following the path laid out by creation theology" (p. xi). His answer to the question of how God acts in history is to be found in the classic notion of creatio continua, God's ongoing dynamic presence within all finite reality. God does not act as a secondary cause but works as the primary agent present to and sustaining the created world. This concept of God as creative Presence is then compared to the scriptural understanding of God as "Spirit," which Haight concedes is the most applicable way of talking about how God works in history. A third way that God acts in the world is then developed from a brief history of the theology of grace. These three sets of theological languages that include God's ongoing creation, the working of the Holy Spirit, and the operation of God's grace in people's lives are, according to Haight, different ways of referring to the same entity. *Chapter five examines the doctrine of original sin in light of evolution. Haight argues that this doctrine in its classic form contains serious problems and therefore needs to be discarded. The Genesis account of Adam and Eve is nothing more than an etiological myth which has no historical basis. Consequently, "when original sin becomes unsteady, the whole doctrine of salvation in terms of redemption begins to wobble" (p. 121). Human beings have not "fallen" and, even though they retain the influences of past stages of evolution, they cannot be born sinful. While Haight admits that humans are sinners, the sins that we commit are nothing more than social sins derived from our participation in sinful institutions that are a part of our evolutionary heritage. It is these sinful social structures that are primarily responsible for corrupting our moral sensibility, rather than some innate propensity to sin. *The person of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of Christology are the subjects of chapters six and seven respectively. Haight introduces chapter six by contrasting the different ways of interpreting Jesus of Nazareth that are presented by Marcus Borg and N. T. Wright. He obviously sides with Borg's perspective as he suggests that one should think about Jesus as simply a "parable of God." Jesus was not an intervention of God in history, but a human representative of God who was "sustained from within by the Presence of the creator God in a way analogous to all creatures and especially human beings" (p. 202). While Haight admits that God was present within Jesus in a unique and more intense way, this same God can also be more powerfully present in others, making them in some measure true revelations of the divine Presence. Jesus provides salvation by "revealing God" and, although this particular revelation of God is meant for all humankind, it does not exclude the likelihood of similar kinds of revelation within other religious traditions. *The last chapter of the book, chapter eight, is a response to the question of what we can hope for in an evolutionary worldview. Haight discusses the following possibilities: faith in a creator-finisher God who injects purpose into the process of the universe, hope for a cosmic preservation of the value and integrity of being, hope for a restoration of meaning relative to innocent suffering, and hope for the preservation of the human person and personal resurrection. He describes resurrection as a passing out of materiality into the sphere of God that transcends the finite world, or in other words, eternal union with God. The resurrection of Jesus was not a historical event, but a spiritual conviction developed by his followers after his death. It was this "Easter experience" which became the basis for the written witness to the resurrection of Jesus that is recorded in the New Testament. In death, Jesus was "received into God's power of life; he did not cease to exist as a person, but lives within the sphere of God" (p. 179). Our hope for an analogous form of personal resurrection ultimately comes down to faith in a creator God who is the "lover and finisher of finite existence." *For whom then is this book written? As stated in the preface to the book, it is not written for scientists, as one will learn very little actual science from its pages. Haight writes that he is mainly addressing Christians who are affected by our present scientific culture and who do not know how to either process their Christian faith in this context or call it into question. However, most of those who fall into this category will likely have difficulty understanding the ideas that are presented in the book without some type of graduate-level training in theology. The book appears to be written primarily for like-minded theologians who are associated with the more liberal wing of the Roman Catholic church. (Many of the footnotes in the book cite publications written by fellow Catholic priests such as Teilhard de Chardin, John Haught, Hans Jung, Karl Rahner, Edward Schillebeeckx, and William Stoeger.) *While Haight's main purpose for writing this book is admirable, it is doubtful that many outside of academia will take the time and put in the effort that is needed to read it and actually understand it. Christians with more conservative, biblically based faith commitments should probably bypass it altogether, as there is very little, if any, orthodox Christianity that is upheld within its pages. *Reviewed by J. Abstract:
The Ryan Haight Act has established excessive restrictions on controlled substance prescribing through telemedicine by first requiring an in-person exam. If the Act is not amended, many individuals in need of medication will go without proper medical care. While other agencies and states have made moves to expand telehealth, the DEA has dragged its feet on making any significant changes. This Comment argues that the federal government should amend the Ryan Haight Act, allowing telemedicine providers to prescribe controlled substances without an in-person exam. This amendment would focus on the standard of care while requiring stringent documentation by physicians who perform telemedicine services. If this change occurs, patients who have barriers to accessing medical treatment will have the opportunity to get the proper care they need.

Mercer, Kevin. "The farm a hippie commune as a countercultural diaspora." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/587.

Full text
Abstract:
Counterculture history is often divided, with a focus on either the turbulent 1960s or the "back to the land" exodus of the 1970s. A study of Stephen Gaskin and his followers' founding of The Farm, a rural commune near Summertown, Tennessee, provides a unique insight into the commonalities and connections of these two periods. It will be the aim of this thesis to weave the separate narratives of this demographic into one complete idea. The idea that the hippies constituted a counterculture suggests that once that culture went into exile, onto numerous communes, they existed as a diaspora. The Farm's existence as a spiritual commune, with their roots in Haight-Ashbury's short-lived utopian dream, and their continuation and evolution of that dream in Tennessee, make this particular group a model for the diaspora. The Farm, with its larger profile, publishing, and outreach programs, became the preeminent post-Haight-Ashbury commune. The commune was able to preserve the counterculture in exile, while it became a leader in dictating the direction of its progress. The Farm's efforts in midwifery, sustainable living, promotion of vegetarian diets, and outreach in America's inner cities and the Third World all point to a proactive counterculture and the commune's leadership role for the remnants of the counterculture. While the profile of the counterculture has diminished, a shift in American attitudes toward natural childbirth, ecology, and a more earth-friendly diet containing a greater variety of organic and vegetarian options reveal a significant success for their agenda.
B.A.
Bachelors
Arts and Humanities
History

Abstract:

This thesis is an exploration of the representation of gay male intimacy in Andrew Haigh’s "Weekend" (2011), a film about a brief encounter between two men. The thesis stages a second brief encounter between Haigh’s film and Lauren Berlant’s writing on feeling. Where Berlant’s ideas are originally worked out in relation to the genre of melodrama and the female complaint, I translate her ideas about intimacy and cruel optimism into the space of ordinary gay life as represented in Haigh’s film.

Abstract:
Main topic of the thesis was to evaluate fatigue properties of the titanium alloy Ti-A13-V2,5, labelled by ASTM as Grade 9. Most attention was focused on fatigue behaviour of the alloy in the range of high cycle fatigue. Fatigue testing was realised to detect the fatigue properties and consequently to generate the Wöhler curve and the Haigh diagram. In addition to this, tension and bending tests were performed. Metallographic and fractographic analyses of fatigue fracture form part of the overview about material properties, which was accomplished by use of REM. Experimental part of the thesis was backed by the literature research. The first half of it contains a short summary of basic information about the titanium and its alloys, so as some chapters about the history and properties of titanium, the way of its production, classification of titanium alloys and its thermic treatment. The fatigue is thoroughly scrutinised in the second half of the background research. Here can also be found the information about the fatigue process, its stages, the fatigue life and the most significant attributes of the fatigue fracture. The last chapters of the thesis are dedicated to the alloy Ti-A13-V2,5 - being examined in the experimental part - so as to its fatigue properties. The main benefit of this thesis is the completion of the missing information concerning the fatigue behaviour of the alloy, which is – according to the literature research - generally not available.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe Haigis formula, like other optical formulas, is based on thin lens optics. However, while all other formulas use only one constant (like the ACD constant, the A-constant, or the surgeon factor) for a given IOL, the Haigis formula uses three (a0, a1, and a2). In addition, apart from the axial length, the anterior chamber depth is taken to serve as a predictor for the postoperative IOL position. By this approach, it is possible to represent an IOL by a curve (optical ACD vs axial length) rather than a number. The power of the formula evolves after optimization with individualization of constants insofar as it allows a mean zero prediction error for the postoperative refraction irrespective of axial length. Although a classical optimization on the basis of one constant is possible, Haigis recommends optimization of the three constants, a0, a1, and a2, derived from a statistical analysis of postoperative results. Thus, for every intraocular lens, an individual curve is defined for optimum prediction of the postoperative IOL position allowing a mean zero prediction error for all axial lengths.

Abstract:
Abstract As the massacre perpetrators return to their respective homes in southern Utah, some, including one ringleader named John D. Lee, are proud of what they’ve done and even boast about it. Their experiences in being driven from Missouri and Illinois in recent years has made them fear and even hate outsiders they call “gentiles.” Everyone’s tune changes when an express letter from Brigham Young to Isaac Haight arrives in Cedar City, where many of the massacre participants came from. In response to a September 7 letter Haight had sent to Young asking what should be done with the group of emigrants under siege at the Mountain Meadows, Young wrote Haight to “let them go in peace.” Haight laments that Young’s letter came “too late.” From that time on, massacre leaders seek to cover up their crime by blaming the massacre solely on Indians and silencing those who knew better.

Abstract As the Horror of the massacre unfolded on that Friday afternoon, militia courier Joseph Clewes hurried his mule from the Meadows to Cedar City. While Clewes sped east, two westbound horsemen rode toward him—Elias Morris, a militia captain and one of Haight’s two counselors in the stake presidency, and Christopher J. Arthur, Haight’s son-in-law. Morris and Arthur had left Cedar for the Meadows that morning, purportedly to check out the “many conflicting and terrible reports” about events there. According to Morris, before they left town Haight encouraged him “to use his infiuence in the interest of peace, and do everything possible to avert the shedding of blood.”

Abstract:
Cooling channels, roughened with repeated ribs, are commonly employed as a means of cooling turbine blades. The increased level of mixing induced by these ribs enhances the convective heat transfer in the blade cooling cavities. Many previous investigations have focused on the heat transfer coefficient on the surfaces between these ribs and only a few studies report the heat transfer coefficient on the rib surfaces themselves. The present study investigated the heat transfer coefficient on the surfaces of 45°, round-comer ribs. Three staggered rib geometries corresponding to blockage ratios of 0.133, 0.167 and 0.25 were tested in a square channel for pitch-to-haight ratios of 5, 8.5 and 10, and for two distinct thermal boundary conditions of heated and unhealed channel wall. Comparisons were made between the surface averaged heat transfer coefficients and channel friction factors for sharp- and round-comer ribs and 45° versus 90° ribs, reported previously. Heat transfer coefficients of the furthest upstream rib and that of a typical rib located in the middle of the rib-roughened region were also compared. It was concluded that: a) For the geometries tested, the rib average heat transfer coefficient was much higher than that for the area between the ribs. b) General effect of rounding the rib corners was a decrease in both rib heat transfer coefficient and channel pressure drop. c) For the highest blockage ratio ribs (e/Dh = 0.25), 90° ribs performed superior to 45° ribs. However, this trend reversed for smaller rib blockage ratios. d) Heat transfer coefficients for the two smaller rib geometries (e/Dh = 0.133 and 0.167) did not vary significantly with the pitch-to-height ratio in the range tested. However, the heat transfer coefficient for the high blockage rib geometry increased significantly as the ribs were brought closer to each other. e) Under otherwise identical conditions, ribs in the furthest upstream position produced lower heat transfer coefficients than those in the midstream position. f) Rib thermal performance decreased with the rib blockage ratio. The smallest rib geometry (e/Dh = 0.133) at a pitch-to-height ratio of 10 and the largest rib geometry (e/Dh = 0.25) at a pitch-to-height ratio of 5, both in midstream position, produced the highest and the lowest thermal performances, respectively.

Abstract:
Looking at HCF, the most critical component on the turbine is the blade. At the present moment there is a need for a HCF criterion suitable for evaluation of stresses calculated with the Finite Element Method. Today there are some, such criterions e.g. Sines. However the criterion does not include important aspects such as the influence of; ‘geometrical size’, ‘stressed volume’ or ‘stress gradient’. A better understanding of the HCF phenomena would give an increase in the design precision and an opportunity to increase the load on the blades. A proposal is made for a new theory for HCF assessment. The input required by the theory is roughly the Haigh-diagram for a smooth test specimen. The theory is a merger between the Sines criterion and the statistical approach made by Weibull. 3 basic assumptions are made; equivalent stresses are calculated according to Sines, ‘the weakest link assumption’ and finally that the fatigue limit for a smooth specimen has a statistical distribution. Comparing the proposal to classical HCF assessment with Haigh-diagram, the following factors are incorporated: 1, stress concentration factor 2, fatigue notch factor (or notch sensitivity factor) 3, geometric volume dependence 4, different Haigh-diagrams for push-pull, bending and torsion If the factors are incorporated partially or fully remains to be shown. It is also possible to give a geometrical quantification of the so called ‘stressed volume’. Qualitative and quantitative tests have been made. Looking at them, the theory looks promising. However, it has to be tested further to get acquainted with any shortcomings of the theory.

Abstract:
Abstract A probability-based procedure has been developed to predict reliability of gas turbine engine blades subjected to high cycle fatigue. The procedures provides a systemic approach for predicting and designing turbomachinery blading reliability against various potential fatigue problems for all relevant vibratory modes and taking into account variability in geometry (e.g. dimensional variation, mistuning, etc.), unsteady aerodynamics, structural damping, and thermal loading. The variability in materials (e.g. damage, cracks, degradation, etc.) can be also considered in this approach. A reliability prediction was performed on gas turbine blades at high frequency modes (e.g. third strip modes) using a probabilistic vibratory stress distribution in conjunction with the Haigh or modified Goodman Diagrams. The cumulative reliability and risk assessment are then calculated using the fast probability integration (FPI) technique to construct a novel probabilistic Goodman (or Haigh) diagram which provides blade’s lifetime design guide line and an optimal maintenance strategy in management in decisionmaking relating to the PM/inspection scheduling, replacement, spare parts requirements.

Abstract:
Luosha Haishi 羅殺海市 (Lz 132) is a very emblematic tale of Pu Songling’s (蒲松齡, 1640–1715), as it involves emblematic themes of Liaozhai zhiyi (聊齋誌異): a critical view of society, an adventure into enchanted lands, and a complex relationship to an independent, powerful woman. The tale tells about the journey of a man who, after having been lost at sea, visits two imaginary worlds. Luosha Haishi reveals its originality when comparing both these places. The first one, the Country of Rakshasas, is a state in which physical appearance determines one’s social status. This society is a satirical portrayal mirroring Pu’s vision of Qing China officialdom. Conversely, the City of the Sea, the character’s second place of stay, is a utopian undersea place where the character knows immediate success. Luosha Haishi thus makes the bitter statement of the impossibility to access glory and richness when one does not wish to hide behind appearances, while for it to occur it would require an ideal world that exists only in imagination.

Abstract:
A method is proposed for HCF-analysis that is suitable for use in early design stages of turbomachinery blades. Quantitative measures of the risk for later encountering HCF life limiting vibrations are the goal for the development. The novelty of the system is the unique and rational way all design data are processed resulting in a mode risk priority listing. The method makes extensive use of FE calculated modal analyses and simple assumptions on the modal force and damping. The modal force is taken proportional to the tangential force on the blade over the operating range. This choice is made because the tangential force is known early on from the compressor performance map, and gives a reasonable scaling with the operating point. Crossings occurring at low speed get a lower force than at high speed. The system damping used is a constant critical damping ratio. Using a modal force and damping along with the FE model forced response amplitude can be directly computed at resonance crossings inside operating envelope. The modal force calculated this way can be compared to the force amplitude needed to reach the fatigue limit in a Haigh diagram. Using the Haigh diagram this way allows modes with localized high stresses, so-called hot spots, to be highlighted. Taking the ratio of the forces gives a ranking value that can be used to compare risk. Details of the technique along with example applications to compressor blades are presented in the paper. It is found that many mode crossings can be excluded as low risk this way and that a rational way of prioritizing is achieved.

Abstract:
Abstract The notch size effect of forged Ti-6Al-4V plate, loaded under high cycle fatigue (HCF) conditions, is investigated for both cylindrical and flat fatigue specimens. Cylindrical specimens were machined with three sizes of circumferential V-notches, with the smallest size dictated by the ability to machine within given tolerances. Flat dogbone specimens were machined with two sizes of opposite V-notches. All notches in both cylindrical and flat specimens have an elastic stress concentration factor of approximately Kt = 2.7. The state of stress at the notch root in the cylindrical specimens is biaxial. Thin flat specimens were chosen with the intent of minimizing the out-of-plane (through the thickness) stress component at the notch root. All specimens were cycled to obtain points on a Haigh diagram, also referred to as the modified Goodman diagram, for a constant life of 106 fatigue cycles. Specimens were cycled at stress ratios of R = 0.1, 0.5, and 0.8, at a frequency of 50 Hz. A step loading technique for generating a point on the Haigh diagram from a single test specimen was used, where the fatigue limit is found by fatiguing the specimen for 106 cycles at a stress level below which failure is expected. If failure does not occur, the stress level is raised and the specimen again fatigued for 106 cycles. This procedure is repeated until failure, after which the fatigue limit is calculated by interpolation. The validity of this technique for Ti-6Al-4V was demonstrated by generating constant amplitude stress-life data for comparison with the interpolated fatigue limits. The notch size effect is examined in light of the stress state at the notch root, and the appropriateness of the von Mises effective stress in characterizing the multiaxial state of stress in HCF is considered.

Abstract:
Within framework of 5th EC European SMILE project, some R&D actions have been conducted to demonstrate, to model and to validate the beneficial warm pre-stress (WPS) effect regarding the risk of brittle failure in a RPV assessment. An important experimental work has been conducted including classical WPS type experiments on CT specimens on usual RPV steels, and one PTS type transient on a large cracked cylinder. All experimental results confirm the beneficial effect of warm pre-stress, with a significant increase of the materials resistance regarding the risk of brittle failure. The experiments have been analyzed using fracture mechanics, including both engineering methods (Chell, Haigh, Wallin) and more refined analyses based on local approach to fracture (‘modified Beremin’ model). Following a short description of WPS concept, the paper summarizes the main experimental results and presents a synthesis of mechanical analyses involving engineering approaches and numerical analyses.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The primary objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to moral injury in social work staff. The secondary objective is to establish how moral injury has been defined in the literature in the context of social work. The review question is: what is currently known about moral injury in social work staff? Background: Moral injury is the lasting psychological, spiritual and social harm caused by committing, experiencing or observing transgressions of deeply held moral values, beliefs and expectations (Haight et al., 2016). The concept of moral injury was developed and subsequently researched with populations of US veterans. Core symptomatic features of moral injury are guilt, shame, spiritual/existential conflict, and a loss of trust in self, others, and/or transcendental ultimate beings (Jinkerson, 2016). Secondary symptomatic features include depression, anxiety, anger, re-experiencing the moral conflict, self-harm, and social problems (Jinkerson, 2016).
