The celebrated novel Pornopopéia, by Reinaldo Moraes, represents a type of joycean Ulysses of the city of São Paulo’s underground in the excesses of the 1980s extended to the beginning of the 21st century. Despite its importance in contemporary Brazilian literature and perhaps because of its literary and linguistic complexity in producing its distinct humor, it has never before been translated into English. This article reports some results of a post-doctoral research in which we carried out a literary, commented translation of this epic novel. The theoretical framework of the research was based in general on a model of language from the perspective of the Theory of Genre and Register (TGR) (MARTIN; ROSE, 2008) and on Berman’s concept of ‘tradutology’ (2012), while the translation practice was informed by adaptations of Rothenberg’s concept of ‘total translation’ (2010), Frota’s Jazz Theory (1989), Toury’s ‘norms’ (1995), Milton’s (1998) discussion of metaphors for the practice of translation. Some results point to the following features as contributing to humor and presenting distinct challenges in the process of translating them: code-mixing and switching, punning haiku, rapid changes in registers from erudite to street, sonority (hard rhymes), neologisms, blends, and other linguistic, semantic and generic transgressions, along with those of a social nature. Ultimately, with this research we hope to offer the anglophone reader the pleasure of this text by Reinaldo Moraes, simultaneously disseminating Brazilian literature and culture to a broad anglophone speech community through the translation, and ultimately contributing to reflections on the practice of translation in translation studies.

Nesta obra encontramos breves e condensadas manifestações poéticas - "101 haikais ou quase" (assim os denomina o próprio sujeito lírico). A confluência de registros poéticos datados e consagrados imprime uma informação estética diversificada, característica freqüente na cena literária contemporânea brasileira. Em relação ao conteúdo, os poemas de AD NADA apresentam um caráter niilista que impulsiona seu sujeito lírico a reconsiderar/questionar as concepções absolutas presentes na nossa existência, tal como a noção de Deus, imposta ao homem, principalmente, pela metafísica e teologia ocidental. Repensar tais conceitos é repensar também a linguagem automatizada e ter a possibilidade de criar uma outra que desestabilize os discursos cristalizados e estereotipados que subjugam a condição humana. A partir dessas perspectivas, analisaremos e interpretaremos a configuração do niilismo na obra para, então, verificarmos como esse posicionamento frente ao mundo influencia o fazer poético do eu-lírico e a sua relação com a palavra poética.<br>Abstract: This thesis is aimed at investigating the poetic diction of Renato Gonda (1959- ) in AD NADA, a work which contains his brief poetic manifestations: "101 haikais ou quase" (101 haikus or almost), as the author himself calls them. The confluence of dated and consecrated poetic registers imparts a diversified aesthetic information, a frequent characteristic found in the contemporary Brazilian literary scene. As for theme, the poems of Ad Nada present a nihilistic character which leads their lyric subject to reconsider or to call in question the absolute conceptions present in our life, such as the notion of God, imposed to man mainly by western metaphysics or theology. To rethink such concepts is also to rethink automatized language and have the possibility of creating another one, which destabilizes the crystallized and stereotyped discourses which subjugate human condition. On the basis of such perspectives, nihilism will be analyzed and interpreted in the work at hand in order to verify how this positioning before the world influences the poetical work of the lyric self and its relationship with the poetic word.<br>Mestre

This dissertation is a sociolinguistic study of the ideologies about language, culture and ethnicity among Japanese immigrants and descendants in Brazil (hereafter, Nikkeis) who gather at a local Japanese cultural association, searching for what it means to be “Japanese” in Brazil. This study focuses on how linguistic behaviors are ideologically understood and associated with cultural activities and ethnic identities. Using the language ideologies framework, it seeks to describe the ways in which Nikkeis negotiate and create social meanings of language in both local and transnational contexts. Nikkeis are an overwhelmingly celebrated minority group in Brazil. In this context, the cultural association serves as a site where symbolic cultural differences are constructed by those Nikkeis who strive to identify themselves as a prestigious minority. This study demonstrates that the Japanese language is one of the important resources in performing the Nikkei identity. At the same time, due to an on-going language shift, Portuguese as a means of communication is becoming increasingly more important for cultural transmission. Thus, the members of the association, which include both Japanese monolinguals and Portuguese monolinguals, are in constant negotiation, trying to strike a balance between symbolic values of Japanese, pragmatic values of Portuguese, as well as their own language competencies. The goal of this project is to answer the following three research questions: 1) What social meanings do Nikkeis assign to Japanese and Portuguese, and how does this perception affect Nikkeis’ identity formation? 2) What are the characteristics of linguistic practices in the association and how do the speakers use available linguistic resources to construct identities? 3) How can this study inform us about the transforming reality of the Japanese Brazilian community in this global age? Contributions of this study include furthering of the sociolinguistic research on language ideologies, linguistic practices and identity construction in an immigrant community. It also contributes to the study of language shift, by underscoring the role of language ideologies in rationalizing language choices. This project is also significant for the study of Japanese diaspora in Latin America, providing the first sociolinguistic investigation of a Japanese cultural association in Brazil.<br>text
