Abstract:
Leading edge erosion of modern wind turbine blades is a growing and developing issue within the wind industry, effecting blade performance and efficiency. Little is known, researched or published on the phenomenon and there are currently no apparent full-proof material solutions for the issue. The research presented here looks to develop a fuller understanding of the issue of leading edge erosion, through first reviewing the literature (both within and outwith wind energy) on the topic to put the issues in context, and then subsequently further exploring and investigating the key damage mechan

Abstract:

Pan, Hongyu. "Impact characteristics of simulated hailstones during ingestion by turbofan aero-engines." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27188.

Abstract:
Recent in-flight instances of aircraft engine power loss involving hail ingestion have forced the manufacturers to demonstrate successful engine operation whilst ingesting hail. The main objective of this research project has been to obtain an understanding of the basic characteristics of hailstone impacts. A hail gun was designed to fire simulated hailstones at speeds up to 175 m/s. Three measurement techniques were used to determine the impact characteristics of the hailstones, i.e: patternator, high speed cine-photography, and still photography with short duration flashes. Using these techn

Abstract:
The focus of the present research is to examine the socio-pedagogical aspects of Adolphus Hailstork's Five Short Choral Works. The socio-pedagogical benefits of these and similar compositions stem from their potential to encourage more critical cultural engagement of the choral contributions of Black composers in both the classroom and rehearsal hall. While the music on its own merit is worthy of deeper study and analysis, the added benefit to students, teachers and conductors is that the inclusion of diverse groups in music education has proven sociological benefits. Therefore, these five

Abstract:
Dendrochronological methods were used to date hail injuries in tree rings of six mountain pines (Pinus mugo var. uncinata) at a site in central Switzerland. Annually dated injuries (1939-1996) were in 89% of the cases attributable to years with severe regional hailstorm occurrence (1957-1996). Days with severe hailstorms were successfully dated in either the earlywood and /or latewood portions of a tree ring in a given year. Tree rings provide an alternative proxy to existing data for reconstructing past severe hailstorm occurrence.

There were a total of 36 events reported officially by the Central Weather Bureau in the last 38 years and only 6 out of 36 events occurred in the summer season. The hailstorm case occurred in the Taipei Basin on July 2, 1998 was investigated using conventional surface and upper-air observations, satellite cloud winds, and EC grid data. Results showed that an upper-level cold-core low provided a favorable condition for the developments of the storm. The storm app
