Abstract:
Tropical forests are of vital importance for maintaining biodiversity, regulating climate and material cycles while facing deforestation, agricultural reclamation, and managing various pressures. Remote sensing (RS) can support effective monitoring and mapping approaches for tropical forests, and to facilitate this we propose a deep neural network with an encoder–decoder architecture here to classify tropical forests and their environment. To deal with the complexity of tropical landscapes, this method utilizes a multi-scale convolution neural network (CNN) to expand the receptive field and extract multi-scale features. The model refines the features with several attention modules and fuses them through an upsampling module. A two-stage training strategy is proposed to alleviate misclassifications caused by sample imbalances. A joint loss function based on cross-entropy loss and the generalized Dice loss is applied in the first stage, and the second stage used the focal loss to fine-tune the weights. As a case study, we use Hainan tropical reserves to test the performance of this model. Compared with four state-of-the-art (SOTA) semantic segmentation networks, our network achieves the best performance with two Hainan datasets (mean intersection over union (MIoU) percentages of 85.78% and 82.85%). We also apply the new model to classify a public true color dataset which has 17 semantic classes and obtain results with an 83.75% MIoU. This further demonstrates the applicability and potential of this model in complex classification tasks.

Eich, Lauren. "Spirits of Haiti Catholicism, Cultural Crossroads, & the Uniquely Haitian Experience." Thesis, The University of Alabama, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10285073.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis examines the characteristics of the spirits Ezili, Legba, and Ogou, in order to determine which aspects of their manifestations incorporate themes of syncretism from Catholic tradition, and which aspects reflect visual tradition that emerged from distinctly Haitian tradition. Elements of Catholic and African traditions, discernable within Vodou iconography, act as a basis upon which the practice was further augmented. These adaptations reveal the mixing of cultures and continuation of tradition that is of central importance to the development of Vodou, as reflections of the process through which the religion overcame the social problems faced by the practitioners, as well as the culturally devastating consequences of Haitian colonial history. These diversifications from the Christianity and African traditions reflect the ingenuity and resourceful nature of Vodou, which through its fluid nature, can be transformed to accommodate the needs of the devotees.

Through a postcolonial methodology, this thesis demonstrates that through the syncretism of Catholic themes, the influence of the West African origins of the Vodou, and the unique experiences of the people in Haiti, the iconography of Vodou visual culture interacted of other religions as it evolved into a distinctly Haitian practice. By looking at the spirits Ezili, Legba, and Ogou, alongside their counterparts of the Virgin Mary, St. Peter, and St. George (or St. James) this essay will outline the syncretization of these spirits with Christian icons, while making parallels to the development of Christian iconography which borrowed from pagan imagery in an effort to place the importance of a figure within a pre-established lineage that placed importance on the image.

Full text
Abstract:
This illustrated dissertation gives an interpretation of two north west coast native cultures (haida and coast salish) based on personal observations. It is a comparative study of past and present artistic and spiritual traditions after a long interruption due to colonization. Oral literature as well as visual art and ceremonies are examined while the links between the three are underlined. The prestigious haida art is studied through the examples of four famous artists : charles edenshaw in the past, bill reid, robert davidson, and jim hart in present days. Coast salish art, though much less developed, is proven highly valuable through the examples of contemporary powerful carver susan point and weavers debra and robyn sparrow who have renewed the former weaving tradition. Close attention is paid to the coast salish need for private spiritual knowledge and to the power of that knowledge expressed in continuing discrete ceremonies (as opposed to the more visible, recently revived ceremonies of the haida). The study of sxwayxwey masks, by levi-strauss and especially by wayne suttles, stresses various aspects of the secretive salish culture and the difference between appearance and reality. Finally, beyond the local context, this dissertation addresses the role of religious art, especially animal representation, on the north pacific coast as compared to medieval art in france. This final discussion on art concludes the dissertation although a few personal remarqs end this paper on a subjective note

Buquet, Benoît. "Art & design graphique des années 1950-1970 : contribution fragmentaire à une histoire visuelle partagée." Paris 10, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA100196.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation discusses the interaction between two different disciplinary fields – art and graphic design – and seeks to understand how a divided history occured. It focuses on France, Italy, Poland and United States, especially on the years 1950-1970. The first part examines the artistic practice of décollage, principally trough the examples of Raymond Hains and Mimmo Rotella, then explores Optical and typographical liquidity. Chapter two focuses on the links between France and Poland. Paying close attention to the polish context and the rise of a singular affichisme, centred around Henryk Tomaszewski, then we emphasize the carreer of Roman Cieslewicz who moves to France in 1963. He takes an important part in cultural french live and at the same time he is involved in « anti-movement » Panique. The last chapter focuses on United States trough three examples : the links between Fluxus and the graphic design of George Maciunas, the stimulating and insidious work of Ed Ruscha and an attention to feminist graphic design in Los Angeles

Jean, Pascale C. "The Influence of Psychological Predictors and Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management Intervention on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Adherence Among HIV-Positive Female Haitian Alcohol Users." FIU Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1860.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: Over half the HIV-infected persons in the Caribbean, the second most HIV-impacted region in the world, live in Haiti. Using secondary data from a parent study, this research assessed the effects of psychological and social factors on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among Haitian, HIV-positive, female alcohol users. Theoretical Foundation and Research Questions: Using the Theory of Planned Behavior/Reasoned Action and the Information, Motivation, Behavior skills model as guiding theoretical frameworks, the study examined the effectiveness of an adapted cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM-A) intervention in improving ART adherence. The effect of psychological factors (depression, anxiety, beliefs about medicine, and social support), social factors (stigma, relationship status, and educational attainment), and alcohol on adherence to ART was assessed. Methods: The sample consisted of 116 female ART patients who were randomly assigned to the CBSM-A intervention or the wait-list control group. Participants completed intervention sessions as well as pre- and post-test assessments. Analyses of variance, t-tests, and point biserial correlations were used to test hypotheses. Results: Surprisingly, ART adherence rates significantly decreased for both groups combined [F (1, 108) = 8.79, p = .004]; there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups with regard to the magnitude of change between baseline and post assessment. On average, depression decreased significantly among participants in the CBSM-A group only [(t (62) = 5.54, p < .001)]. For both groups combined, alcohol use significantly decreased between baseline and post-assessment [(F (1, 78) = 34.70, p < .001)]; there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups with regard to the magnitude of change between baseline and post-assessment. None of the variables were significantly correlated with ART adherence. Discussion: Adherence to ART did not improve in this sample, nor were any of the variables significantly associated with adherence. The findings suggest that additional supportive and psychological services may be needed in order to promote higher adherence to ART among HIV-positive females. More research may be needed on this sample; a focus on mental health issues, partner conflict, family and sexual history may allow for better targeting and more successful interventions.

Abstract:
The turtle (kame) is of great importance in East Asian culture and it is seen as a supernatural creature. In Japanese literature, we can find examples of the turtle in works dating back to the Nara period, such as Tangokuni fudoki and Nihonshoki. Just like the crane, the turtle is a symbol of longevity. However, from the Kamakura period a new and unique interpretation of the turtle as the “singing/crying turtle” makes its appearance. Of this topos, known as kame naku, we can find only very few examples in literature until the Meiji era and the most known are the waka anthologies Shinsen waka rokujō and Fuboku wakashō, and Kyokutei Bakin’s kigo collection Haikai saijiki shiorigusa. However, from the beginning of the modern age, kame naku has been used by many poets as a kigo connected to spring and its frequency has hugely increased. After the war, it began to appear not only in poetry but also in novels and essays. The best known examples of this being Mishima Yukio’s short novel Chūsei, Uchida Hyakken’s essay Kame naku ya, Kawakami Hiromi’s work Oboreru. Using kame naku as a keyword, in this paper we will analyze the attitudes and approaches of modern and contemporary poets and novelists toward the topos.

Abstract:
AbstractInternationally there is growing interest in how young children engage with and learn concepts of science and sustainability in their everyday lives. These concepts are often built through nature and outdoor play in young children. Through the dialectical concept of everyday and scientific concept formation (Vygotsky LS, The collected works of L.S. Vygotsky. Problems of general psychology, V.1, (Trans. N Minick). Editor of English Translation, RW Rieber, and AS Carton, New York: Kluwer Academic and Plenum Publishers, 1987), this chapter presents a study of how families transformatively draw attention to STEM and sustainability concepts in the everyday practices of the home. The research followed a focus child (4–5 year old) from four families as they navigated everyday life and talked about the environments in which they live. Australia as a culturally diverse community was reflected in the families, whose heritage originated in Europe, Iran, India, Nepal and Taiwan. The study identified the multiple ways in which families introduce practices and conceptualise imagined futures and revisioning (Payne PG, J HAIA 12:2–12, 2005a). About looking after their environment. It was found that young children appear to develop concepts of STEM, but also build agency in exploration, with many of these explorations taking place in outdoor settings. We conceptualise this as a motive orientation to caring for the environment, named as E-STEM. The study emphasises for education to begin with identifying family practices and children’s explorations, as a key informant for building relevant and locally driven pedagogical practices to support environmental learning.

Abstract:
This essay examines the ideas and activism of a woman calling herself Madame Parque, who traveled across the United States giving lectures to black and white audiences during the 1870s. Claiming to be a well-educated, multilingual, and mixed-race Haitian educator, Parque spoke at courthouses, black churches, and black schools throughout the United States, mocking racism and sexism and celebrating Afro-diasporic history and black identity. The woman who presented herself as a Haitian named Madame Parque emboldened African Americans striving for meaningful freedom and prodded white Americans to develop more enlightened perspectives about black people. Her story captures the dynamic ways in which black women influenced the directions of black thought in the postemancipation United States.

Abstract:
The introduction argues that the global turn in contemporary art has been limited by overly generalized cultural categorizations and inadequate coverage of the local social, economic, political, and historical contexts of non-Western artworks. In response, the author posits an urban-focused, historically grounded, and theoretically rigorous model of disciplinary diversification that foregrounds key examples of art and design created in and about Shanghai. The city is described as an exemplary case study with which to localize global contemporary art, accounting for Shanghai’s longstanding “East-meets-West” mythology and genealogy stemming from its early twentieth century semi-colonial past and radical transformation during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). The introduction acknowledges how Republican Shanghai has been recognized by scholars as a modern cultural capital with its own unique Shanghai style, haipai (literally sea style), and proposes that we must also consider the city’s art and design of the 1990s-2000s, the period of Shanghai’s most rapid growth as an international financial and cultural capital.

Morrison argues that in Ulysses, the terms of this debate offer a revealing context for Bloom's family, for the presence of large numbers of "foreigners" and for the anti-semitic and xenophobic language of Haines, Mr Deasy, the Citizen and others. In Finnegans Wake, the Act provides the impetus for Joyce's radical questioning about citizenship.

Abstract:
This chapter profiles two classic bands tied deeply to Haiti’s Vodou roots, Boukman Eksperyans and RAM. Both bands are active and revered on the global popular music circuit and have also been instrumental in leading grassroots resistance to abuses of power and authority in Haiti. More than thirty years after their respective musical debuts, the leaders of both groups have become pillars of the music scene and respected figures in society far beyond their music celebrity status. In many regards, both ensembles have established models for civic leadership through their musical activities, and both are well recognized for their politically and socially engaged music. This chapter explores how Boukman Eksperyans and RAM have infused their music with principles of Vodou metaphysics and Haitian cultural values, albeit in different ways. It also describes how the respective bandleaders situate their musical and non-musical work in the larger scheme of Haitian politics and culture.

Abstract:
Hainan nuclear power plant (HNPP) is the first nuclear power plant built on China’s Hainan Island. Therefore the nuclear fuel assemblies must transport through the Qiongzhou Strait. There are two transportation plans to be used in crossing strait transportation of the fuel assemblies. One plan is railway ferry stretching across sea; the other is road vehicular crossing strait on roll-on/roll-off (Ro/Ro) ships. According to crossing strait transportation scenario and statistical analysis of sea transport accidents in Qiongzhou Strait, three ferrying transportation accidents are considered in this paper. Through research of ship-to-ship collision, fire and sunk, the following conclusions: Collision, fire or foundered are not caused by the leakage of radioactive material, the environmental impact is very small. The accident hazards of crossing strait transportation does not lie in the radiological consequences, but in the effects of public psychology and international repercussions.

Gandini, Camilla, Andrea Monje Silva, and Pablo Guerrero. Gender and Transport in Haiti: Gender Diagnostic and Gender Action Plan. Edited by Amanda Beaujon Marin. Inter-American Development Bank, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003069.

Abstract:
This technical note encompasses Haiti's gender assessment, evaluates the success of gender specific actions implemented between 2011-2017, and presents a Gender and Transport Action Plan (GAP). The GAPs main aim is to guide investments in Haiti's transport sector in conceptualizing and designing gender-sensitive transport projects. By proposing specific gender actions and outcomes, the GAP establishes a clear path to integrate a gender dimension into operations design, implementation and, monitoring and evaluation. The GAP presents an overall plan to support the development of Haitian women. However, it focuses in the needs of women as transport services users and devotes specific attention to two female sub-groups, comprised by Haitian women engaged in informal trade of local and regional products. These women are known as Madan Sara (MS), and local female mango producers and traders (MPT). The decision of focusing on MS is related to their vital role in the Haitian local labor market and the peculiarity of their work, which has specific transport needs. Understanding and addressing these female groups transport constrains could strategically improve the outcomes of upcoming transport investments and bring more benefits to its beneficiaries.
