<p> This study examines young, Black women's hair practices and perspectives within the current wave of the Natural Hair Movement. Based on twelve in-depth interviews with Black women in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, this analysis uses Black feminist thought and standpoint theory to center the concept of "natural" hair and explore participants' relationships to it. The analysis is attentive to the ways family, peers, and media have influenced Black women's hair practices and perspectives, and grounds these in the history of racialized, gendered, and class-related perceptions of Bla

Abstract:
This thesis describes studies on the analysis of arsenic (As) in human biological samples, mainly urine but also hair and fingernails using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). The relationship between ethnicity and arsenic metabolism was investigated for the first time for a population in the United Kingdom. This investigation has been carried out through comparative analysis of arsenic in human urine, hair and fingernails in volunteers from three different ethnic groups (Whites, Asians and Somali Black-Africans) w

Abstract:
This thesis considers two particular systems of gravity coupled to matter: Einstein-non-Abelian-Proca (ENAP) theory with gauge group $SU(2)$ in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime and Einstein-charged-scalar theory in a cavity. The first part of this thesis is devoted to the ENAP-AdS model. For a purely magnetic gauge field we obtain spherically symmetric solitons and black holes with non-Abelian Proca hair. This is achieved by solving the corresponding field equations numerically. We prove that the equilibrium gauge field must have at least one node. Then we turn to dyons and dyonic

Patrick, Deborah Michelle. "An investigation of hair modelling and rendering techniques with emphasis on African hairstyles." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006561.

Abstract:
Many computer graphics applications make use of virtual humans. Methods for modelling and rendering hair are needed so that hairstyles can be added to the virtual humans. Modelling and rendering hair is challenging due to the large number of hair strands and their geometric properties, the complex lighting effects that occur among the strands of hair, and the complexity and large variation of human hairstyles. While methods have been developed for generating hair, no methods exist for generating African hair, which differs from hair of other ethnic groups. This thesis presents methods for mode

Mkentane, Kwezikazi. "The development and optimization of a cosmetic formulation that facilitates the process of detangling braids from African hair." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1662.

Abstract:
A large number of people throughout the world have naturally kinky hair that may be very difficult to manage. These people often subject their hair to vigorous and harsh treatment processes in order to straighten it and hence make it more manageable. Hair braiding is a popular and fashionable trend amongst many people, in particular people of African descent. Braided hairstyles serve to preserve hair and protect it, and to give it time to rejuvenate after a period of harsh treatment. During the braiding process synthetic hair is attached to natural hair by weaving a length of the natural hair
