Full textThis study was necessitated by the fact that being labour intensive, hair salons provide partial solution to South Africa’s high unemployment, poverty and inequality problems hence need to be supported so that they can grow and continue performing their expected labour absorption role. Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality in the North West Province of South Africa is a socio economically depressed area that depends on hair salons for employment. The prosperity of hair salons is therefore critical to the well-being of the inhabitants of the area. Unfortunately, proliferation of hair salon business in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality since the dawn of democracy in South Africa has created fierce competition for customers leading to lack of profitability and hair salons failures. While many reasons can account for business failure in the face of intense competitive environment, there is consensus from the literature that in the current information economy, appropriate management of records allows for quick access to reliable information and this is key to business success. In fact, resource-based view (RBV) of the firm suggests that a company’s quick access to reliable information that is contained in its resources allows that firm to gain sustainable competitive advantage that allows for superior performance. This calls for proper management of a company’s records. Accordingly, it is crucial that managers/owners of hair salons recognise the importance of good records management in their businesses in order to continuously have timely access to accurate information. Unfortunately, the researcher has informally observed a disturbing trend among some hair salons in Dr Ruth Mompati local municipality that flies in the face of what can be termed good records management. An informal visit to some of the salons in the region revealed an apparent laxity with which transactions were recorded. Worst still, Informal conversations with a few hair salons operators seem to suggests that records management may be a problem among hair salons as some even see it as more a liability than asset. This suggests that hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality might not be taking records management seriously. The question then is, how wide spread is this negative attitude towards records keeping in Dr Ruth Mompati local municipality? Or could this be the general sentiment in the hair salon industry as a whole? The purpose of this study was to assess the status of records management among hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. The key finding of this study is that most hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality do practice records management to a certain extent. However, there are certain records that hair salons in the area regard as of no importance and therefore are neglected. The study also revealed that those hair salons that engage in good records management outperform those that do not. The study further revealed that most of the salons keep paper records although they would prefer electronic format. Lack of access to computers was cited as the greatest problem in keeping electronic records. Details of the study including findings, conclusions and recommendations are presented and discussed in the main report.

To meet business needs, the hairdressing salon industry offers such services as hair washing and is an industry which has great demand for hot water every day. Nevertheless, generating hot water with gas or electricity would consume much energy. Therefore, relevant enterprises feel troublesome for paying for the energy. Despite the trend that the efficient air-cooling heat pump-driven water heater has become increasingly popular, thermal sources are highly inaccessible during winter due to the low-temperature outdoor environment. As a result, an electric heater is usually adopted to support heating. But such a practice would eliminate the energy conservation effect as claimed by a heat pump-driven water heater. Taking a hairdressing salon in Changhua City as a case study, this study recycled the thermal wastewater which derived from hair washing and would be discharged in most cases. Moreover, the self-developed “heat exchange energy-efficient system” was used to heat the water of normal temperature with the thermal energy released from the recycled thermal wastewater after heat exchange. After the temperature of water of normal temperature increased, the heating equipment was adopted to reduce the energy and time consumed, so as to achieve effective energy conservation. According to the empirical results, the temperature of the water of normal temperature for the heating equipment could increase to 4.1 ℃ on average after the heat exchange based on the “heat exchange energy-efficient system”; in the case study, the demand for daily hot water was more than 1.5 metric tons. The number was used for the evaluation and analysis. If the water was applied with the electric water heater, about NTD 38.6 would be saved in electricity on a daily basis. In this way, about NTD 1,004 would be saved for a month (26 days); moreover, the overall energy conservation efficiency would be over 16%. As up to NTD 12,048 would be saved every year, the balance between income and expenditure could be struck for a recycling year of only 10 months. In conclusion, such practice not only fulfills the objective of “making full use of energy on a cumulative basis” but also serves as the best way to promote the implementation of the scheme of energy conservation and carbon reduction in a later stage.

In Taiwan, the fast developing hairdressing salon industry, which is able to help consumers maintain their beautiful appearance, is increasingly competitive each year. Thus, the research in consumers’ behaviors in hairdressing salons is important. As the level of consumption increases and life quality is upgraded in Taiwan, more and more people begin to pursue the maintenance of their appearance and the relaxation of their body and mind. Refined and quality services not only can satisfy customers and increase their loyalty but also will cause customers to refer the service of hairdressing skills or products to others as well as to continue to consume by themselves. Whether people’s being highly conscious of services and the pleasure in them nowadays also affects the timing of transformation for the hairdressing industry is a question worth investigation. “Brand image” has been academically explored for years, with various definitions given to it by researchers. proposed that brand image is a way of seeing, an attitude toward and a feeling of a brand by consumers. brand loyalty as a consumer’s support and commitment to repurchase or revisit a product or service he/she likes, which thus causes repeated purchase in a same brand or a same set of brands. service innovation as the production or sale of new products or new services. stated that apart from successful development of new products or new services, service innovation also includes improvements on the process of delivering existed products and services. Innovation is more than just creation of new products and services and making use of new opportunities; it also involves the successful process of promoting new services. This study uses the example of exquisite hairdressing salon chain to explore the brand image, service innovation and loyalty of the consumers in it, in an attempt to identify the factors of their reconsumption and recommendation, as well as the contradiction between brand upgrade and market image after service innovation during the process. In this study, factor analysis was used to reduce to the constructs of brand image, perceived brand value, service innovation and brand loyalty; the SPSS statistics software was also used to testify the relationships between the variables to serve as reference in improvement on management and strategies.

There are many studies on how to improve the service quality and customer satisfaction in the hairdressing industry. However, there are few studies on service failures and service remediation on customer behavior intention patterns. Therefore, this study investigates the customer service intentions in the hairdressing industry service error and service remediation, and discusses the effect of the service remediation of the customer after the service failure of the hairdressing service personnel can be accepted by the customer. In this study, the questionnaires were distributed to a well-known chain hair salon in the central region, such as: Yizhongdian, Hankoudian, Jingyidian, Fengdadian, etc. Firstly, the Liszt five-point scale was used for scoring. The SEM analysis method was used to carry out basic statistical analysis of each research variable, and then the overall model verification analysis was carried out. The data analysis uses SPSS and Amos18 software as the analysis tools, and uses the linear structure relationship model to analyze the relationship between service failures, service remediation and customer behavior intentions, and uses the analyzed data to make mistakes in the part to improve Negligence and mistakes in service to achieve quality improvement and create better service. Scoring, mainly to explore the remediation model and customer attitudes and behavioral intentions, and then use the linear structure relationship model to verify the hypothesis model of this study to determine the effectiveness of the remediation model. The results of the study confirm that service failure requires service remediation, service remediation has a positive impact on the behavior of customers' repurchase intentions, and repurchase intention has a positive impact on off-role behavior. It is expected that the results of this research can be used as a reference for remedial methods when service failures occur in the hairdressing industry.

With human beings as its principal focus, educational training is a very important issue for the hairdressing industry. If it can be done to steady the hairstylist’s confidence, enhanced his/her capabilities, increase the manpower of the hairstylists and continuous training in fashion and technical skills for the hairstylists, operations of hair salons would be half as successful. Therefore, hairstylists is the most important human resource to the hairdressing industry, to a professional organization like the hairdressing industry, a practical method to improve the employees’ performances, the most common and popularly used is through related educational training courses, to improve the hairstylist’s technical and professional skills, therefore trainings for hairdressers in the hairdressing industry are never limited, however over generosity may resulted in too much training opportunities, causing situations of inappropriate trainings leading to high overhead costs, at the same time unable to control the educational effects. In view of this, this research used a case study from a hairdressing salon’s monthly sales information and its workers educational training programs, divided into technical and functional courses, and separately analyze the effects on employees’ performances, in the area of employees’ performances is categorized according to the hairdressing characteristics into categories of technical related income growth, retail sales growth and overall business income growth, at the same time population statistics variances are noted in research variables, applying a complete set of SPSS software to carry out the analysis, in order to understand the relationships between different educational training, employees’ performances and population statistics variances to arrive at the research result. This research discovered that technical courses have an obvious effect on technical related income growth, functional courses have an obvious effect on retail sales income growth, and functional courses have an obvious effect on overall business income growth, at the same time technical skills and functional skills have obvious crossed effects on overall business income growth. Population statistics variables of sex, marital condition, titles, in-shop experience have obvious effects on technical income growth, retail sales income growth and overall business income growth respectively. This research discovered comparatively hairstylists with a higher educational training attendance have a higher rate of business growth, simultaneously senior hairstylists also enjoyed better business growth, as a result hairdressing owners can encourage higher rate of participation in educational trainings in the group of lower business income growth and the junior hairstylists, and also to suggests to make the training contents more diverse and attractive, to increase hairstylists’ willingness to participate in the training programs, and to cultivate a sense of learning, to promote a initiative and challenging spirit, hairdressing owners can also use a complete performance evaluation system, together with a perfect training system to achieve the goals of better employees’ performances. We used Taiwan Training Quality System (TTQS) to make the main research framework in this study. Two stages in this research which are divided are discussed: 1. before we import TTQS, we analysis the competencies of professional hairdressing personnel 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of training after importing TTQS. In the first stage, in order to understand the professional hairdressing competencies, we used DACUM as the qualitative research methods, and to develop a "professional salon hairdressing training assessment criteria table". Meanwhile, we used this table to estimate the difference between professional-level employees’ competencies, and used the competencies inventory to find out the competencies gap of employees, then we proposed the training courses to realize the competencies gap. In the second stage, we used Kirkpatrick training evaluation model to estimate the effectiveness of the students after training. Using Structural Equation Model (SEM) to explore the relationship between the response level, learning level and behavior level in Kirkpatrick evaluation model. The results showed after students being trained, their response in the field of course satisfaction (response level), employees’ competencies (learning level) and actual work effectiveness (behavior level) are improving. All the three levels showed positive evaluation and effect.

Various cosmetic hair products are constantly used in hairdressing salons. Aside from skin absorption, different hazards may be released during hair treatments. Previous studies have indicated that increased risks of cancers, respiratory symptoms, reproductive disorders, and skin symptoms were found among hairdressers. However, the exposure assessments are few. To assess the hairdressing environment in Taiwan, the walk-through survey and air sampling of formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and phthalates were performed in this study. Including charcoal, XAD-2, and OVS-Tenax tubes were used for the air sampling, and the flow rates were 50 mL min-1, 100 mL min-1, and 1000 mL min-1, respectively. Both 5-hour average environmental sampling and customer’s personal sampling during hair treatments were performed. After absorbents were desorbed, the samples were analyzed with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Direct-reading device was used to observe changes of formaldehyde concentrations during opening hours. Meanwhile, environmental characteristics and products ingredients were also recorded in this study. Ten hairdressing salons were included for walk-through survey, and 5 salons were involved for field sampling. There were total 89 environmental samples, 12 customer’s personal samples, and 72 short-term formaldehyde samples. During walk-though survey, a total of 387 different ingredients were shown on 129 hair product labels. It was found that the chemicals used in salons were variable and diverse. In addition, the salons were not well ventilated (CO2 levels measured 600-3576 ppm), and the gloves were not properly used by hairdressers. As for the results of air sampling, formaldehyde concentrations was ranged from 0.01 to 1.04 mg m-3, and the maximum level was above the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Additionally, about 16.67 % samples exceeded action level (AL), and 83.33 % levels were higher than the standard of Taiwan Indoor Air Quality Management Act and the recommendation of World Health Organization (WHO). The range of ethanol concentrations was 0.16-10.5 mg m-3; isopropanol concentrations were between 0.01-1.24 mg m-3; acetone concentrations were ranged from 1.86-260 μg m-3; the range of butyl acetate was 0.185-53.3 μg m-3; ethyl acetate concentrations were between 0.10-1310 μg m-3. For phthalate esters, the airborne concentrations of five phthalates were 0.005-17.5 μg m-3. Although the levels of VOCs and phthalate esters were below occupational standards, some levels measured were higher than the concentrations of general indoor environments reported by earlier research. The results of short-term formaldehyde concentrations showed that chemicals might accumulate in hair salons during opening hours. Besides, formaldehyde concentrations in main working areas were significantly higher than other areas. The results indicated that airborne chemical exposure, especially formaldehyde, is the problem worth attention in hairdressing salons. The ingredients in products were possible sources of indoor pollutants. Therefore, monitoring the indoor air quality, giving workers health educations, choosing safer products, and increasing the ventilation rates are all crucial to minimize the exposure in hairdressing environments.
Makibelo, Mpho Kgwaredi. "Business sophistication levels of informal sector hairdressing salons." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/12451.
Full textThe aim of this research study was to suggest the business sophistication levels of the informal sector hairdressing salons in Cosmo City. This aim was achieved through two research objectives, namely; identifying the characteristics that categorise the hairdressing salons as informal sector enterprises under the umbrella of Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs), and determining the business management practices that are currently implemented by the hairdressing salons. South Africa’s informal sector has the potential to contribute towards poverty alleviation and employment amongst the semi–skilled and unskilled poor. However, businesses in this sector apply less developed business management practices as compared to their formal counterparts. Furthermore, the challenges faced by these enterprises in implementing sound business management practices contribute to a lack of sophistication in their business operations, which in turn reduces their performance and sustainability. The adoption of good business management practices can have a significant impact on the performance of an enterprise, as well as on its productivity and output. This is true for an enterprise of any size. As a business becomes more mature in the implementation of business management practices, the longer that enterprise’s sustainability horizon may become. The research was conducted amongst Cosmo City’s hairdressing salon and the data was collected by means of interviewer–administered questionnaires. A total of 24 out of the 36 hairdressing salons that were identified to participate in the research study completed the questionnaires. The study employed a qualitative research approach during the data collection process; however the data analysis was quantitative in nature. In support of the first research objective, it was confirmed that the hairdressing salons operated within the informal sector, specifically in the lower end Business Sophistication Measures (BSM) categories 1, 2 and 3. With regards to the second research objective, it was confirmed that particularly because the informal sector hairdressing salons had low BSM they lacked good business management practices. Due to the size and nature of their operations, low managerial competence and skills, limited business support, small–scale marketing initiatives, the lack of documentation of policies and procedures and inadequately maintained business information; the informal sector hairdressing salons are too undeveloped to embrace good business management practices and as such have lower to low medium business sophistication levels that may prevent further growth and sustainability.

Abstract The research paper mainly intends to study the consumption behavior of consumers in hairdressing industry. Comparing the chain hair salons and hundred-dollar fast haircutting shops, and from the three main concepts of “lifestyle of consumer,” “attribute of product” and “image of store,” the study analyzes and investigates the difference of consumer’s consumption willingness. The study adopts the way of questionnaire survey, uses stratified sampling method, and takes the consumers being served at the “chain hair salons” and “hundred-dollar fast haircutting shops” of the whole Taiwan as the research targets. There were 480 questionnaires sent out. After deduction of the 36 invalid returned questionnaires with incomplete answers, there were 444 valid questionnaires finally received, achieving a return rate of 92.5%. As found in the investigation results of the study, for the part of consumption population statistics of “chain hair salons,” the customers are mostly female, mostly single, mainly aged 31~40, mostly acquiring education level at university standard, mainly having careers in service industry, and earning monthly personal income of $30,001 ~ $50,000. As to the part of “hundred-dollar fast haircutting shops,” the customers are mostly male, mostly single, mainly aged 31~40, mostly acquiring education level at university standard, mainly having careers belonging to service industry, and earning monthly personal income of $30,001 ~ $50,000. As observed from these results, the market segmentation of hairdressing industry is extremely obvious. Besides, as known from the evidences being studied, the interviewed consumers who like to have haircuts at chain hair salons are resolute in doing things, like to learn new things, are fond of having urban and social contacts and activities, pursue trendy things, follow the vogue, are willing to try new and strange things, request high-quality enjoyment, advocate the consumption behaviors belonging to the lifestyles of foreign countries, apparently have biased fondness of taking explicit attribute as the main consideration factor, more obviously attach higher importance to products, services, physical equipments and shop atmosphere. As to the interviewed consumers who like to have haircuts at hundred-dollar fast haircutting shops, they have no confidence in doing things, incline to be self-abased for thinking their abilities insufficient, have the traditional ideology of male domination and female subordination, perform their consumption behavior with extremely high sensitivity to price, obviously have biased fondness of taking function attribute as the main factor of emphasis, and attach higher importance to convenience degree in the aspect of store image. In addition, for the part that H1b is not established, it is also found that the interviewees of hundred-dollar fast haircutting shops are mostly male. When males are under stress and have nowhere to vent their wrath all through these years of economic recession, transfer function is caused, making the males have the consciousness to own their personal space. Under the stress of work, males gradually tend to care more about their recreational life. Regarding the part that H1e and H1f are not established, it reveals that the lifestyles of consumers always change with time and environment. This is mainly caused by the incompleteness of the question items and the conservative answers of the interviewees. Nevertheless, if the consumers have more obvious interaction with their consumption behaviors (referring to the lifestyle of consumer, attribute of product and image of store), they apparently incline to consume at chain hair salons. According to the analytic results of the study, some suggestions are proposed by the paper for the practice of management –– brands and sustainable operation have become a mainstream trend; the differentiation of services or products has become a principle for enterprises to achieve the keys to success, a niche market belonging to hairdressing industry should be established focusing on the consumption style and trend; the core and added value of service or product should be searched during these years with low-profit competitions. As to the suggestions for marketing practices –– chain hair salons adopt differentiated marketing, offer customized service, and combine with commercial business districts or communities to create a co-flourishing circle together, whereas hundred-dollar fast haircutting shops adopt cooperation with different industries, experience the promotion activities of haircutting, and should put more effort on the professionalization of service.
