O presente artigo versa sobre o caráter das acusações de cunho “haitianista”, ou seja, ligadas diretamente aos supostos ideais remanescentes da Revolução Haitiana, principalmente o extermínio da raça branca, Ã luz da percepção de uma racializada sociedade brasileira no oitocentos. Para isso, torna-se necessário o entendimento dos conceitos de raça e racialização, além, é claro, de um maior aprofundamento nos eventos que culminaram na segunda nação independente das Américas, o Haiti. Finalmente, são levantados alguns exemplos da influência haitiana nas diversas camadas sociais brasileiras.

This article aims at understanding the role played by the discussions about slavery and slave trafficking in the literate culture of Brazil in the 19th century, especially regarding the forms of figuring out the future of the nation. The way Canon Januário da Cunha Barbosa, an important politician and an illustrated intellectual, related projections of the future of the nation and treated the slavery issue (from 1830 to 1836) is analyzed. In the Dominican Republic, the memory of the Haitian conquest and annexation of the nation from 1822 until independence on February 27, 1844, along with the solidification of the anti-Haitian nationalist rhetoric of the 1920s and 30s, have fueled deep-seated animosity toward Haitians. April Mayes argues that the Dominican Republic’s Constitutional Court's decision to strip citizenship and nationality from thousands of Dominicans, most of whom are of Haitian ancestry, demonstrates how factions within, and powerbrokers aligned with, the Partido de la Liberación Dominicano (Dominican Liberation Party, PLD) have used anti-Haitianism and other human rights abuses to consolidate its power over the past two decades. During the PLD's administration, anti-black exclusion, Mayes insists, became institutionalized within the bureaucratic mechanisms of the state, complementing and assisting the state’s governance model.
