Abstract:
This study investigates potential shifts in relative language dominance in early sequential bilinguals across the primary school years. The subjects are thirty-eight Polish-English speaking children. A new test, the Child HALA (Dubiel & Guilfoyle, 2017), is introduced, which measures shifts in relative language strength by comparing lexical accuracy and response time between two languages. This test has been designed specifically for use with children, and is based on the HALA psycholinguistic tool (O’Grady, Schafer et al., 2009). The aim of this study is twofold. The first goal is to evaluate shifts in the relative language strength in both languages by examining changes in lexical accuracy and response time (RT). The focus is on the impact of word frequency on lexical accuracy and access, and the link between the frequency of language use and its relative strength and maintenance in bilinguals. The second aim is to examine the CHILD HALA’s suitability, reliability and applicability in research on language acquisition and maintenance in young bilinguals. In particular, the objective is to evaluate whether the test will show a pattern of shifts in language strength comparable to the outcomes of previous research. The results show that the children’s relative language dominance shifts from the initially stronger L1 Polish to the more dominant L2 English between the age of eight and eleven. The Child HALA test discovers reliable results across age groups and languages when compared with other studies that investigated lexical accuracy and access (Kohnert, Bates & Hernandez, 1999; Jia, Kohnert, Collado & Aquino-Garcia, 2006), and therefore may be considered as a reliable method in assessing language strength and maintenance in children. The results also support the earlier finding by O’Grady et al. (2009) and Tang (2011) of the response time measure being more sensitive and precise in the assessment of language strength than lexical accuracy alone. This study contributes to the broader field of bilingual language acquisition, and the Child HALA may be considered as a reliable method in assessing language strength and maintenance in young children.

Reflections on comic books and illustrated literature, in English), edited by Julia Haba-Osca and Robert Martínez-Carrasco (2020), is a compendium of short articles written in Catalan. The book is the resulting outcome of a series of conferences, International Symposium of Innovation about Illustrated Literature, celebrated at the Universitat de València. Each of these articles acts as an individual chapter within the book, which compiles a total of fourteen of these. Speakers from different professional backgrounds and fields of knowledge related to the role of the printed image as a means of communication were invited to participate in the symposia and the subsequent compendium. This variety is reflected in the different thoughts, ideas, and views on the role of image in literature that encourage the reader to analyse and consider other perspectives. The book champions the view of illustrated literature as a graphic and visual literary genre in its own right. The book aims to open the reader’s critical eye towards the use of illustrated literature to convey meaning and stimulate the reader’s interpretive skills.

Dionne Brand (Trinidad y Tobago, 1953) es una de las poetas más reconocidas del Caribe anglófono y es una clara representate de la situación de la poesía en las Antillas de habla inglesa en los últimos treinta años: la literatura de la región se publica fuera de ella pero no por eso deja de dar cuenta de las realidades caribeñas. En el presente ensayo trabajamos con el poemario Land to Light On (1997) para abordar la visión que se halla en él sobre el lenguaje, sus usos y posibilidades, frente al fracaso de los sueños revolucionarios del pasado y la realidad presente de discriminación y xenofobia. El lenguaje para Brand no puede volverse un refugio, un espacio habitable, un punto de anclaje, sino que resulta siempre un recordatorio del desamparo.

This study aims to describe taboo words (haba geutham) as a form of language adab and the impact of psychological influences on Pidie community activities. This type of research is field research using a qualitative approach. The method used is descriptive-analytical. The data of this research are taboo words (haba geutham) as a form of language adab and the impact of psychological influences on the activities of the Pidie community. The data source of this research is informants, namely the people who live in Pidie district. The data was collected using structured interview techniques which are supported by inducement techniques. The data analysis technique used is the stage analysis technique, selecting data, describing the entire data, grouping the data, and analyzing the data. The results of the research found were taboo words (haba geutham) as a form of language adab in Pidie community activities including, (1) taboo language of words relating to animals, (2) taboo language regarding spirits (3) taboo language -words relating to disease, (4) taboo language of words relating to farming activities, (5) taboo language of words relating to hunting activities, (6) taboo language of words relating to nighttime, (7) taboo language words relating to the tradition of marriage, (8) taboo language of words relating to body organs, (9) taboo language of words relating to femininity, (10) taboo language of words relating to the genitals and sexual organs, ( 11) taboo language of words relating to sexual activity, and (12) taboo language of words relating to certain words. Regarding the impact of the psychological influence of taboo words (haba geutham) on community activities Pidie has a negative impact because it is caused by speech, (1) taboo words (haba geutham) because of fear, (2) taboo words (haba geutham) ) because they feel uncomfortable or uncomfortable, (3) taboo words (haba geutham) because they feel impolite and impolite, and (4) taboo words (haba geutham) are contrary to religion.

El presente trabajo presenta un estudio etnolingüístico de tres comunidades afroparaguayas: Emboscada (fundada en el siglo XVIII por pardos libres) y Camba Cua y Laurelty (fundadas en el siglo XIX por soldados negros libres que llegaron con el general uruguayo José Gervasio Artigas). Los datosconfirman la existencia de configuraciones lingüísticas que establecen vínculos claros con otras comunidades de habla afrohispánicas, entre ellas el Valle del Chota (Ecuador), los Yungas (Bolivia), Sama-Las Yaras (Perú), el Chocó (Colombia) y Helvécia (Brasil). Entre las características claves sedestacan los plurales invariables y con una sola marca de plural (las persona, los militar), los verbos invariables para persona y número y la ausencia del género nominal femenino (loh mujere, algún comida). -- The present work offers an ethnolinguistic study of three Afro-Paraguayan communities: Emboscada (founded in the 18th century by free blacks), and Camba Cua and Laurelty (founded in the 19th century byfree black soldiers who arrived with the Uruguayan general José Gervasio Artigas). The data confirm the existence of linguistic structures that link Afro-Paraguayans with other Afro-descendent communities, such as the Chota Valley (Ecuador), the Yungas (Bolivia), Sama-Las Yaras (Peru), Chocó (Colombia), and Helvécia (Brazil). Among the principal traits are invariant plurals with a single plural marker (las persona, los militar), verbs invariant for person and number, and lack of feminine gender concord (loh mujere, algún comida).

Thesis (MA (African Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.<br>This study explores semantic analysis of motion verb-hamba in IsiXhosa. In chapter 1 I have stated the aim of the study. I have discussed properties related to the lexical semantic analysis of the verb-hamba as well as Pustejovsky’s theory of the Generative Lexicon. The theoretical framework and the organization of study are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 2 addresses in more detail the type system for semantics. A generative theory of the lexicon includes multiple levels of representation for different types of lexical information needed. These levels include Argument Structure, Event Structure, Qualia Structure and Lexical Inherent Structure. In this chapter there is a more detailed structure of the qualia and the role they play in distributing the functional behavior of words and phrases in composition. In chapter 3 I have examined the lexical semantic analysis of the verb-hamba to account for the range of selectional properties of the NP phrase subject argument of the verb-hamba and various interpretations that arise in terms of composition with its complement arguments. The polysemous behavior of the verb-hamba is examined in sentence alternation constructions with respect to the properties of the event structure. I have also investigated the lexical representation in terms of argument structure and the event structure of the verb-hamba in different sentences. Chapter 4 is the conclusion, summarizing the findings of all the previous chapters in this study on lexical semantic analysis of the motion verb-hamba in IsiXhosa. This is followed by word lists that contain meanings of words in the context in which they are used.

<p>En Chile el aborto está legalizado como un crimen por el Código Penal donde se prohíbe la interrupción voluntaria del embarazo en cualquier situación, como la existencia de servicios públicos gratuitos para su eje-cución en forma segura. Sin embargo, sigue siendo una práctica clandes-tina e insegura para un gran número de mujeres chilenas, transformán-dose así el aborto en un grave problema de salud pública, de Derechos Humanos y de justicia social. Pese a la demanda por la despenalización del mismo, surgida de distintos grupos de la sociedad, el debate sobre el tema es limitado y, todavía no forma parte de la agenda política del go-bierno. A partir de cuatro entrevistas a expertos/as del aborto en Chile, este estudio intenta conocer el impacto que produce la penalización del aborto en las mujeres chilenas, donde se observan las tensiones existen-tes en el debate actual del mismo.</p>

En esta tesis doctoral se ha realizado una descripción del comportamiento de las vibrantes del español en habla espontánea. Partimos de los resultados obtenidos en el estudio piloto Análisis acústico de las vibrantes del español en habla espontánea, realizado como trabajo de final del máster de Formación de Profesores de Español como Lengua Extranjera impartido por la Universidad de Barcelona. El corpus utilizado en esta ocasión es mucho más amplio y completo puesto que contempla las dos variedades dialectales peninsulares del español: la variedad septentrional y la variedad meridional. Se han extraído aproximadamente 200 sonidos vibrantes de un total de 10 comunidades (11 corpus): Andalucía (occidental y oriental), Asturias, Canarias, Castilla la Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra y el País Vasco; dando como resultado el análisis de 2238 vibrantes en habla no controlada. Este análisis acústico se ha realizado mediante el programa informático Praat.<br>This PhD thesis is a description of the behavior of Spanish rhotics in spontaneous speech. We start from the results obtained in the pilot study The teaching of pronunciation through spontaneous speech: acoustic analysis of rhotics, made as final work of the master Formación de Profesores de Español como Lengua Extranjera by the University of Barcelona. The corpus used this time is broader and exhaustive because it includes the both Peninsular dialectal varieties of Spanish language: the Northern range and the Southern variety. Appoximately 200 rhotic sounds from a total of 10 autonomous communities (11 corpus) have been drawn: Andalucía, Asturias, Canarias, Castilla la Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra and País Vasco; resulting in the analysis of 2238 rhotics in uncontrolled speech. This acoustic analysis was conducted by Praat software.

Esta investigación doctoral aborda la robótica asistencial (Assistive Robotics) como tema general, también llamada robótica social; específicamente el estudio de la interacción de la relación humano-robot. Con base en el estudio del estado del arte realizado, esta tesis se orientó hacia el siguiente problema de investigación: ¿es posible mejorar la efectividad terapéutica y de esta forma la calidad de vida de las personas con dificultades para comunicarse verbalmente debido a singularidades relacionadas con el habla y lenguaje; por medio del desarrollo de estrategias socio-terapéuticas que utilicen robots y mundos virtuales con frecuencias de exposición flexibles en comparación con la exposición programada utilizando únicamente robots en el mundo físico? El problema de investigación brinda una direccionalidad innovadora desde varias perspectivas científicas. Por un lado, la integración terapéutica de recursos en el mundo virtual así como en el mundo físico con robótica asistencial en colaboración con el ser humano para cumplir un objetivo de crecimiento personal. Además, la posibilidad de romper la barrera del tiempo controlado de exposición terapéutica por medio de la tecnología. Y, por otro lado, metodológicamente buscar un abordaje científico que demuestre causalidad y no sólo asociación por medios cualitativos; dado que se quiere saber si la efectividad terapéutica realmente puede incrementar como variable de respuesta. Por lo tanto, y como elemento de innovación adicional, esta investigación abordó el diseño de un prototipo tecnológico de programación robótica con emulación animada, que integra el uso de un avatar robótico virtual para facilitar la interacción social de personas que presentan dificultades de comunicación verbal relacionadas con el habla y lenguaje. El objetivo general de esta tesis se plantea como sigue: “Aportar al conocimiento científico sobre la interacción humano-robot con fines terapéuticos de comunicación verbal en el idioma castellano comparando el uso de robots en el mundo físico y virtual con flexibilidad de tiempos versus la interacción limitada a robots físicos por periodos de tiempo fijos para saber si es posible incrementar de forma relevante la efectividad terapéutica en términos de mejora de habilidades y tiempo invertido en terapia.” Esta investigación contribuye científicamente con la propuesta de un enfoque metodológico que busca obtener resultados basados en la evidencia experimental y no sólo en el análisis hermenéutico o el análisis léxico de datos cualitativos que constituye lo más frecuente en la investigación científica en este campo. En este sentido, el método exploratorio basado en datos cualitativos y abordajes epistemológicos subjetivistas pueden verse bien complementados con investigación positivista más orientada a la evidencia basada en resultados vinculados a la causalidad. Otra aportación de esta investigación está en el desarrollo tecnológico orientado hacia el uso de la experiencia de realidad virtual de personas con condiciones de limitación en habla o lenguaje en combinación con un robot físico. Esta es una forma innovadora de buscar la exposición continua y en tiempo real a los protocolos de terapia de habla sin supervisión física del terapeuta, teniendo en cuenta que las aplicaciones robóticas en mundos virtuales vinculados con el "mundo físico" no son frecuentes.

Spanish<br>Ph.D.<br>This dissertation, "Andean Spanish in Peru: Acquisition, Variation and Change in the Speech of Huancayo," focuses on the maintenance of Andean Spanish, a linguistic variety spoken on the Peruvian Andes, which is the result of centuries of interaction between Spanish and Quechua societies. The importance of my research lies in the awareness that global processes are changing and restructuring the ways in which Andean people, a historical marginalized social group in Peru, develop and construct a range of new global identities, while still preserving their local ones. Using a qualitative and quantitative approach, the analysis explores the effects of social factors upon language use and the maintenance or loss of Quechua features in the language and culture of the Andean city of Huancayo.<br>Temple University--Theses

Benson<br>Students have opportunity to reach learner autonomy and achieve real world applications utilizing communicative competence, a learner centered environment and comprehensible input, incorporated into a unit for student success. The acquisition of language and culture is facilitated in the classroom environment with low affective filters and comprehensible input combining different learning strategies. The activities in this cultural thematic art unit engage student’s interest and activate his or her background knowledge, making meaningful connections with the unit content and their personal lives. Literature, paintings, grammar and vocabulary enable students to build communicative competence in L2. Language learners collaborate and engage in the target language while simultaneously learning about literature, history and culture and learning how artists and writers represent empathy for others as they process words by various Spanish speakers. Additionally, authentic texts and the use of technology enhance students’ linguistic performance. The unit begins with my teaching philosophy followed by a sequence of activities that allow students to process language while they study the consequences of war on those who are affected by it, and a brief section on potential learning outcomes for those who participate in the activities.

Vocal learning, one of the subcomponents of language, is put at center stage in this dissertation. The overall hypothesis is that vocal learning lays the foundation for both language evolution (phylogeny) and development (ontogeny), and also high-level cognition. The computational ability found in vocal learning is seen as so enhanced in humans as to yield the kind of recursion that supports language. Empirical evidence on vocal learning in nonhuman animals and humans from behavioral, neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, genetic, and evolutionary fields is suggestive that vocal learning interacts with other cognitive domains at multiple levels. The positive correlation between the hippocampal volume and open-ended vocal production in avian vocal learning species suggests the possible involvement of the hippocampus in vocal learning. The empirical studies of foxp2 in nonhuman animals and humans suggest that foxp2 plays a role in multimodal communication and general cognition. Phylogenetically, Sapiens’ vocal learning abilities are unique among primates. Compared with nonhuman primates, our species possesses stronger and more enhanced connections between the superior temporal cortex and premotor cortex as well as the striatum. In Sapiens, meaning aside, vocal learning as such can explain many features found in speech and its ontogeny such as the specialized auditory mechanism for speech, the preferential attention to speech in newborns, the primacy of vocal imitation among multimodal (visual and auditory) imitative skills and the stages seen in learning to speak. All these characteristics seem to be different and abnormal, albeit to different degrees, in autism. A 25-30% of the autistic population is non/minimally verbal but even the high functioning end of the autistic spectrum presents with abnormalities, such as difficulties in processing speed and an impaired imitative capacity that could be satisfactorily explained if language entered again the definition (and diagnosis) of what autism is, with an special emphasis on vocal learning.<br>El vocal learning, un dels subcomponents del llenguatge, ocupa un espai central en aquesta tesi. La hipòtesi general és que el vocal learning constitueix el fonament de l’evolució (filogènia) i del desenvolupament (ontogènia) lingüístics, i també de la cognició. L'habilitat computacional que es dóna en el vocal learning es veu en els humans tan potenciada com per ser la base del tipus de recursió en què es basa el llenguatge. Proves empíriques sobre el vocal learning en animals no humans i en humans, des de camps que inclouen des del comportament, la neuroanatomia, la neurofisiologia, la genètica i la teoria de l’evolució, suggereixen que el vocal learning interactua amb altres dominis cognitius a molts i diferents nivells. Filogenèticamet, les habilitats de vocal learning en el Sapiens són úniques entre els primats. Comparada amb els primats no humans, la nostra espècie posseeix unes connexions més denses i potents entre el còrtex temporal superior i el còrtex premotor així com l’estriat. En el Sapiens, deixant de banda el significat, el vocal learning tot sol pot explicar molts trets de la parla i la seva ontogènia com ara l’especialització auditiva per a la parla, l’atenció preferent a la parla en els nadons, la primacia de la imitació vocal entre les habilitats imitatives multimodals (de base visual i auditiva), i els estadis que s’observen en l’adquisició de la parla. Totes aquestes característiques sembla que són diferents i anòmales, tot i que en diferent graus, en l’autisme. Un 25-30% de la població autista és no verbal o mínimament però fins i tot a la banda de l’espectre autista que es considera d’alt funcionament s’hi donen anomalies, tal com ara un cert dèficit en velocitat de processament i una capacitat deficient d’imitació, que podrien explicar-se més satisfactòriament si un dèficit de llenguatge entrés altra vegada a la definició (i diagnòstic) del que és l’autisme, amb un èmfasi especial en el vocal learning.

Abstract:
Silvia Goldman presents the Chilean poet and performer Cecilia Vicuña’s poetry collection i tu (2004) as a postnational work of literature that addresses its reader in several languages, such as Spanish, English, and Quechua. Goldman argues that i tu establishes a speech “between languages,” able to pierce through territorial, cultural, and linguistic borders. The poetic voice calls this an “habla-alba” (a “dawn-speech”) that identifies the common roots of several languages and thus re-establishes the connections between them. By challenging pre-established linguistic, national, and cultural boundaries, Vicuña's poetry aims to construct a future based on the continual redefinition of a multilingual and multicultural identity.The poems ini tu, therefore, can be read as an itinerant geography within a provisional country, described by the poetic voice as a “no lugar.” Protected from exile and rootlessness, an alternative sense of belonging can be constructed. The collection i tu, as this chapter argues, builds its own utopian, alternative “global village,” where the threads that lead back to a common point of origin are made visible and where political, national, cultural, and linguistic borders are questioned.
