Abstract:

DiSimone, Cori Beth. "The Rabi Yehuda Halevy: The Physical and Conceptual Space of a Sephardic Synagogue in Mexico City." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193233.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes Rabi Yehuda Halevy synagogue, which Victor Babani designed and Francisco Canovas built from 1941 to 1942 in the Colonia Roma Sur of Mexico City. I focus on its formal characteristics, as well as its socio-historical context. I examine late-nineteenth century to mid-twentieth century life for Sephardic Jews in Mexico: their cause for immigration, experience in their new homeland, and relations with other Jewish groups and non-Jews in the city. I explore the use of style and iconography in the synagogue in relation to the history and prior employment of these architectural features. Defining "style" in the Rabi Yehuda Halevy demands an understanding of the employment of a particular formal language in the design of minority groups' architecture. The process of finding a style to portray national identity in Mexico was parallel to the Mexican Sephardim's use of architecture to articulate their own identity in the city.

Abstract:
We have tried in this thesis to issue the most important characteristics of the poeticart of muwassah through the diwan of judah-halevi, and to present the thematic space of this spanisho-arab poetry. We have begun the second part of our thesis by a vew of the life of judahhalevi and his formation. We have also in this part allowed our study to the poetic art of muwassah through the diwan of judah-haevi in the level of bottom and form. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate three models of family therapy: Bowen Theory, Haley's Strategic Family Therapy, and the Satir Process Model. The question that was explored concerned what family therapy approaches achieve what types of engagement, dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning outcomes with what kinds of delinquent families. Further, what effect do traditional court services have on a similar sample of delinquent youths and their families.;A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental design with pre and posttest treated (n = 188) and comparison (n = 61) groups was employed. Independent variables included the treatment interventions (Bowen, Haley, Satir, and comparison group). The dependent variables included seven criterion variables of clinical engagement, clinical dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning.;The Bowen and Satir groups engaged significantly more families than the Haley group. The Satir group had fewer premature terminations than the Haley and Bowen treatment groups. There were no significant differences between the Haley and Bowen Dropout samples.;The Satir group completed with the highest number of families, followed by the comparison group, the Bowen completed sample, and the Haley treatment group.;The Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control resulted in a significant effect for Time. Thus, at the end of treatment, parents had lower mean scores, indicating a move toward being more internally directed.;The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales resulted in some significant findings, specifically: Identified Clients' Cohesion subscale (Group effect); Mothers' Social Desirability (Group effect); Fathers' Social Desirability (Group effect); and Identified Clients' Social Desirability (Group and Time effect).;Testing indicated that families were more satisfied with the Satir Process Model than Bowen Theory.;In general, results indicated that all family members were more satisfied with the Satir Process Model therapists, than with the Bowen and Haley clinicians.;Families were dissatisfied with the some aspects of the treatment they received in particular: Bowen Theory: exclusion of the Identified Client from therapy; Strategic Family Therapy: unknown observers on the other side of mirror engendered a perception of vulnerability and lack of confidence in the therapist; Satir Process Model: the brevity of treatment within the confines of the research project. Abstract:
L'image symbolique, les tendances mystiques, l'aspect rethorique et metrique de la poesie de judah halevi<br>The fundamental problem for our work will attempt to forulate an answer is the role and the importance of the arabo muslim sources in the jewish poetry in the exemple given by the the hudah halevi (1075?1141). To define in a precise and comple way the inpact of arabo muslim literature on jewish literature and particularly in judah halevi's work it is necessarily a study of content and not only of form. Obviously, my point of reference is the jedah halevi's poetic collection which is moreover a sing of engagement and renewal of jewish poetry. I have to say here that by poetic i mean as well judah halevi's experience and methods which refers more than ever to the most ancient technic of arabic poetry as well as to the more modern procedures of poetry of this al muwashshahat period on that point, the first part of this study offers aglobal presentation of the arabo muslin inpact on jewish literature in general. The second part which is in reality one of the main parts of this study tries to surround a comparative reading between a mosaic of arabic poems and of judah halevi's poetic collection this reading is based on those axes : the influence of the profane poetry on its hebrew sister. The degree of involvement of arabic poetry on the rebirth of jewish poetry. The symbolic image, the mystic tendancies, the rhethorical and metrical aspect in his poetry

Yeadon, Michelle. "The Nether Worlds of Jennifer Haley — A Case Study of Virtuality Theatre." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/23726.

Abstract:
Studies exploring the first wave of digital performance foregrounded technology by cataloging experimentation and novel interactions between liveness, projections and code. As exercises in medium, these high tech spectacles demonstrate the aesthetic potential of digital media while introducing key media concepts. Jennifer Haley is a writer with one foot in theatre and one in code. She is uniquely positioned in two interdependent spheres, which makes her particularly suited to engineer a theatrical bridge into the virtual, because at the heart of the contemporary technological revolution is a new level of writing and media literacy. Theatre has been effectively accessing the virtual imagination for millennia, and new technologies create new intricacies for engaging the virtual within theatrical space. Each is a medium defined by action, which host other media, and provide in depth simulations. Haley’s plays push beyond the fascination and spectacle of technology to incorporate the mundane reality of the digital into the structure of her work. Haley writes plays specifically to resonate with the similarities she sees between theatre and virtual worlds. Utilizing techniques and tropes from other media and then framing the narrative from within a theatrical world Haley exploits the essence of an active, critical audience and opens a dialog between virtual worlds and the perceptions of the audience. She treats her media generated worlds as places. Other digital theatre plays may peer through a window into the virtual by dramatizing a conversation through media; Haley sends an expedition over the threshold into another world. A flesh version of an avatar breathing before the audience establishes a material existence unattainable in two dimensional screen media. Haley illuminates the constructed nature of mediatized communication, but she does it dramaturgically deemphasizing the technology and re-centering the human within the virtual drama. Her approach builds a metaphorical bridge between theatre and virtual digital realities. Through a close reading of Haley’s plays I will demonstrate how Haley takes the artistic next step for computer technology and theatre.

Abstract:
James Evetts Haley, a West Texas rancher and historian, balked at the liberalism promoted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. Haley grew concerned about increased federal control over states and believed Roosevelt was leading the country toward bankruptcy. In 1936, Haley, a life-long Democrat, led the Jeffersonian Democrats in Texas, who worked to defeat Roosevelt and supported the Republican candidate, Alf Landon. He continued to lead a small faction of anti-New Deal Texans in various movements through the 1960s. Haley espoused and defended certain conservative principles over the course of his life and the development of these ideas created the philosophical base of the modern Republican Party in Texas.

Full text
Abstract:
Age is often a factor which can have an effect on the well–being levels of employees as well as the profitability of organisations, but it is unfortunately at times overlooked by organisations. Many researchers have found that employees can differ in their experiences of well–being (burnout and work engagement) as a result of age and that there may be differences in the job demands, job resources and personal resources, which predict wellbeing. The objectives of this study were to determine 1) whether there are significant differences between young, middle–aged and older employees with regards to their experiences of burnout and work engagement, and 2) whether the predictors (job demands and job resources, sense of coherence) of burnout and work engagement differ for young, middle age and older employees. The South African Employee Health and Wellness survey (SAEHWS), a selfreport measure, was used to collect data from the junior managers (n = 582) in the banking sector across South Africa. The participants were subsequently divided into three age groups, namely young (18–30 years of age), middle–aged (31–50 years of age) and older employees (51–65 years of age). MANOVA was used to determine if there were any significant differences between well–being and age after which an ANOVA was performed. The results of the ANOVA analysis firstly showed that young and middle–aged employees experienced higher levels of exhaustion than their older colleagues did. Cynicism however, did not differ across the three groups. Even though there did not seem to be overall significant differences between age and work engagement, the post hoc analysis revealed that older employees seemed to experience significantly higher levels of dedication compared to younger employees. There were no differences between the age groups found for vigour. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that different job demands and resources predict wellbeing for the different age group with the exception of emotional load, which predicted exhaustion for all three age groups. However, SOC was consistently significant across all three age groups with regards to predicting their well–being. SOC seemed to increase with age as experience is obtained. These findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the importance of age when considering interventions to keep their employees from burnout and disengagement, especially for South African organisations. Age definitely seems to play a role in the experiences of well–being according to the findings and also aid in the explanation of what different job characteristics employees seemed to value across their ages. Older employees also seemed to use their personal resources more efficiently as they get older in order to build positive well–being. The results of this study can assist organisations in the financial sector to create sufficient interventions for ensuring high levels of well–being, as the findings highlight specific job demands and resources that can assist in that goal. Moreover, there is limited research on the topic within a South African context, therefore the results of this research also serves to encourage South African organisations to act proactively in the promotion of positive wellbeing. Recommendations were made for practice as well as for future research.<br>Thesis (MCom (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Smithson, Lee Wallace. "Meta-leadership in a mega disaster: a case study of Governor Haley Barbour’s leadership during Hurricane Katrina." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/44673.

Full text
Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>The complexities of leadership in today’s environment are often obscured by the focus of traditional theories on leadership as the top-down, leader-subordinate construct typical of hierarchical organizations. These theories also do not fully capture what occurs when leaders must catalyze action well above and beyond their formal lines of decision making and control. Leaders today must simultaneously lead down in the traditional sense, up to influence the people or organizations to which they are accountable, and across to activate peer groups and others with whom there is no formal subordinate relationship, and that these activities are parts of an integrated whole. This leadership model is referred to as meta-leadership. This thesis asked, to what extent is Governor Haley Barbour’s response to and decision making during Hurricane Katrina an example of meta-leadership? What can be learned as far as smart practices from Barbour’s leadership and can these practices be replicated? The focus of this thesis was the conduct of a single case study. Governor Haley Barbour’s leadership style and decision-making process during Hurricane Katrina response operations were examined to determine whether or to what extent they accord with the theory of meta-leadership. Our conclusions are that Governor Barbour epitomized the tenets of meta-leadership and that, given the proper academic environment, meta-leadership can be replicated.

Abstract:
The FBS (Lees-Haley, 1992) is a relatively new validity scale for the MMPI-2 designed specifically to detect feigned neurocognitive deficit. The aim of the present study was to examine the FBSs efficacy in differentiating psychiatric and neurocognitive feigners using a known-groups design. Malingering tests were administered to 180 individuals undergoing forensic neuropsychiatric evaluations. Based on the malingering test results, participants were classified as honest responders, psychiatric feigners, neurocognitive feigners, or feigning both psychiatric and neurocognitive deficits. The FBS significantly differentiated the 3 feigning groups from the honest group, but it did not discriminate effectively between neurocognitive and psychiatric feigners.

Abstract:
Since Hurricane Katrina, targeting redevelopment has become the dominant municipal strategy for neighborhood and city-wide revitalization. Since 2009, this strategy has been adopted and is currently being implemented by the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority in several New Orleans neighborhoods. One such area includes the commercial corridor of the Central City neighborhood, Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard (OC Haley). This thesis describes and assesses NORA‘s strategy for revitalizing OC Haley with regards to impacts on Central City‘s economic development and affordable housing—two of the area‘s greatest challenges. Although NORA‘s targeting strategy is proving effective in many respects, it is not without its limitations including creating a gentrifying environment. To address this foreseeable impact, this thesis recommends the incorporation of a Community Land Trust (CLT) into NORA‘s Central City Strategy to aid in effectively revitalizing the neighborhood without compromising affordability.

Abstract:
Nous prouvons qu'il est plus avantageux d'allouer la mémoire de cache aux récepteurs les plus faibles<br>Today, there is a real need to strengthen the communication security to anticipate the development of quantum computing and the eventual attacks arising from it. We compute upper and lower bounds on secure capacity-memory tradeoff considering different cache distributions. To obtain the lower bound, we propose different coding schemes that combine wiretap coding, superposition coding and piggyback coding. We prove that allocation of the cache memory to the weaker receivers is the most beneficial cache distribution scenario

Full text
Abstract:
The Jewish allegory of love indicates the representation of the relations between God and Israël as a love relation, God representing the male partner and Israël it feminine. Its origin takes place within the Bible, in the Song of Songs and some chapters of the Prophets. In Andalusia, however the theme of the allegory of love adresses an important number of poetic works and has been renewed by using elements stemming from the profane poetry of love and by the appearance of new allegorical plans concerning in particular the fate of the human soul. The aim of the thesis is to clarify the reasons of this development, through a systematic analysis of the liturgical corpus of two of the great masters of andalusian poetry : Moses Ibn Ezra (1055-1138) and Juda Halévi (1075-1141). We have tried in particular to assess the influence of the profane love poetry, the influence of the Sufism, the role of poets'character, the impact of the interest for neoplatonic philosophy and the strength of the previous tradition related to the allegory of love. According to this last one, the failures of Israël are explained in terms of vicissitudes of love relation. We point out that the use of allegory shows actualy up various meanings. According to Juda Halévi, the allegory seems above all a literary answer to the national problem while for Moses Ibn Ezra it is related to the interest of this poet carries for profane poetry. According to both poets, the allegoory on the human soul is connected with a new interpretation of the Song of Songs according to Neo-Platonism, constituting a "hidden" meaning of this text

Denna uppsats är en litteraturstudie av Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

Bergmann, Ari. "Halevy, Halivni and The Oral Formation of the Babylonian Talmud." Thesis, 2014. https://doi.org/10.7916/D82F7KG3.

Abstract:
This dissertation is dedicated to a detailed analysis and comparison of the theories on the process of the formation of the Babylonian Talmud by Yitzhak Isaac Halevy and David Weiss Halivni. These two scholars exhibited a similar mastery of the talmudic corpus and were able to combine the roles of historian and literary critic to provide a full construct of the formation of the Bavli with supporting internal evidence to support their claims. However, their historical construct and findings are diametrically opposed. Yitzhak Isaac Halevy presented a comprehensive theory of the process of the formation of the Talmud in his magnum opus Dorot Harishonim. The scope of his work was unprecedented and his construct on the formation of the Talmud encompassed the entire process of the formation of the Bavli, from the Amoraim in the 4th century to the end of the saboraic era (which he argued closed in the end of the 6th century). Halevy was the ultimate guardian of tradition and argued that the process of the formation of the Bavli took place entirely within the amoraic academy by a highly structured and coordinated process and was sealed by an international rabbinical assembly. While Halevy was primarily a historian, David Weiss Halivni is primarily a talmudist and commentator on the Talmud itself. Halivni offers his bold construct of the history of the formation of the Bavli in the context of his commentary Meqorot Umesorot, which spans almost the entire Babylonian Talmud. Halivni explains the process of the formation of the Bavli as taking place well after amoraic times in a massive unstructured process of reconstruction. This dissertation will demonstrate that both of the theories of Halevy and Halivni are in need of careful analysis and revision. Halevy's construct despite providing valuable scholarly insights is tainted by a strong ideological agenda. On the other hand, Halivni, as a literary critic, provides insightful literary analysis and his conclusions on the uniqueness of the stam have been firmly established in contemporary scholarship. However, when analyzing Halivni's theory one must distinguish between his literary conclusions and his historical construct. The later is a constantly evolving theory, and it has presented numerous problems as it has developed over time, mainly in the introductions to Meqorot Umesorot. The body of this dissertation consists of three chapters, each focusing on a different model for the formation of the Bavli. Chapter One focuses on Halevy, beginning with his biography and continuing with an in-depth analysis of the scope and purpose of his Dorot Harishonim and the ideological import of his research. The second chapter addresses the theory of Halivni on the formation of the Bavli. After a biographical sketch of Halivni's life, I review the scope and purpose of Meqorot Umesorot with a special emphasis on his scholarship ki'peshuto, followed by a detailed analysis of his model and the evidence he offers in support of it. The third chapter proposes an alternative model for the formation of the Talmud which combines aspects of Halevy's and Halivni's theories. I propose a model that includes a fixed oral text, accompanied by an oral fluid commentary. This dual form of transmission accounts for the diverse structure and style of the apodictic material and the dialectical interpretative argumentation of the stam. The fixed apodictic text, the proto-Talmud follows the basic contour of Halevy's model, while the understanding of the stam follows many aspects of Halivni's description of the reconstruction of the dialectical argumentation by the Stammaim. By applying form criticism to determine the Sitz im Leben of talmudic transmission and teaching, combined with recent scholarship on the various forms of oral transmission, I propose a framework which allows for a developmental model which integrates the perceptive historical insights of Halevy with Halivni's literary findings.

Ogg, Mariette. "Mess to the Press: Navigating Alex Haley's Journalistic Roots." Thesis, 2019. https://doi.org/10.7916/d8-85gt-ed78.

Abstract:
Mess to the Press is a narrative of the life of Alexander Murray Palmer Haley (Alex Haley), the author and twenty-year United States Coast Guard veteran who wrote his way into annals of the nation’s literary, journalistic, and military histories. While the Pulitzer Prize-winning Haley is best known for authoring The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965) and the genealogical epic Roots (1976), this study archives and considers over two decades of writerly practices that precede publication of these seminal texts. More specifically, the narrative history presented here—charted from a complex network of archival materials and oral histories that span oceans and continents—critically examines Haley’s origins as a master storyteller, a griot of sorts, whose literary and journalistic contributions subverted the forms, functions, and outlets of traditional narrative accounts for his mid-twentieth-century audiences. Drawing on stories told within and across government documents, special collections, oral histories, periodicals, physical artifacts, and retired Coast Guard members’ personal letters and photographs, the researcher employed historiographical methods to examine the following questions: (1) How does Haley become a writer? (2) How does Haley come to recognize, develop, hone, and share his writing as an active duty Coast Guard member (1939-1959) at a time when African American service members endured the realities of a segregated service while fighting for Democracy and Civil Rights on both home and warfronts? and (3) To what extent do literacy practices, skills, and experiences from Haley’s Coast Guard service emerge in his early post-Coast Guard retirement research, writing, and journalism? As this study traces Haley’s journey from scrubbing pots in a shipboard galley to composing galley proofs for some of the country’s best-selling periodicals, the reader is asked to consider how this revisionist account is less of a traditional critical literary biography and more of an autobiographical assemblage. Textual and material analysis of periodicals, special collections holdings, and oral histories navigated by its female, active-duty Coast Guard author works to navigate and expose the roots of Haley’s early writing life and journalistic journey.

Power, Adam. "Sheltered work to social enterprise: a case study of Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society." Thesis, 2018. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/10056.

Abstract:
Supportive work programs for people with disabilities have historically included sheltered workshops; while social enterprises are now more commonly found in policies and programs providing opportunities to address social, environmental, or economic challenges through revenue generating activities for this group. I began this thesis as a person who works at Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society in Nova Scotia, Canada and who is part of the changing provision from sheltered workshops to social enterprises. My primary research question is what is a non-profit, community-based organization working with people with disabilities, and a history of sheltered workshops, response to the current social enterprise movement? The study provides a case study analysis on Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society and its woodshop and thrift store programs for people with disabilities. The research includes interviews and focus groups with 19 participants (7 staff, 12 program participants) that work in the agency social enterprises as well as an organizational financial analysis. A thematic analysis of the interview and focus group transcripts resulted in the emergence of four themes that explore different aspects of social enterprises that support persons with people with disabilities. The themes included community engagement, demonstrating individual and agency capabilities, improved individual well-being, and agency social-economic tensions. Social enterprise at Haley Street is an integral part of its identity and emergence in the community. The profitability of social enterprise at Haley Street appears to be secondary to the social well-being and engagement of participants. The current research found that sheltered work and social enterprises are comparable entities, with sheltered work a subgroup of social enterprise.<br>Graduate
