Abstract:
We performed first-principles calculation to show that a host–guest silicon nanostructure can exhibit half-metallic properties, wherein the host is a single-walled hexagonal silicon nanotube while the guest is a hybrid atomic chain of Mn and Co (encapsulated in the host nanotube). The calculated electronic band structures indicate that the Fermi level intersects only in the spin-up band, whereas the spin-down band exhibits semiconducting characteristics.

Abstract:
Improvements in thin film elaboration methods and a deeper understanding of condensed matter physics have led to new exciting phenomena in spin electronics (spintronics). In particular, magnetization reversal by spin-orbit and spin-transfer torque as well as the development of spin waves based devices have placed the Gilbert magnetic damping coefficient as a key parameter for future data storage and information processing technologies. The prediction of ultralow magnetic damping in Co2MnZ Heusler half-metal magnets is explored in this study and the damping response is shown to be linked to the underlying electronic structure. By substitution of the Z element in high quality Co2MnZ (Z=Al, Si, Ga, Ge, Sn and Sb) epitaxial thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy, electronic properties such as the minority-spin band gap, Fermi energy position in the band gap, and spin polarization can be tuned and the consequences for magnetization dynamics analyzed. Experimental results allow us to directly explore the interplay of spin polarization, spin gap and Fermi energy position, with the magnetic damping obtained in these films (together with predictions from ab initio calculations). The ultralow magnetic damping coefficients measured in the range from 4.1 x10-4 to 9 x10-4 for Co2MnSi, Co2MnGe, Co2MnSn and Co2MnSb are the lowest values ever reported in conductive layers and offer a clear experimental demonstration of theoretical predictions on half metal magnetic Heusler compounds. Then, the relation between the Gilbert damping and the ultrafast demagnetization time in quaternary Co2MnSixAl1-x compounds with a tunable spin polarization is analyzed. This way, it is possible to confront theoretical models unifying those two quantities that live in different timescales. Finally, structural and magnetic properties of Mn3Ga/Co2YZ Heusler superlattices are investigated in order to combine ultralow Gilbert damping coefficient, minority spin band gap and perpendicularly magnetized heterostructures, another requirement for low energy consumption devices. Through the present work, we aim to prove that Heusler compounds provide an excellent playground to study fundamental magnetism and offer a pathway for future materials design

Abstract:
In this thesis, the magnetic damping in different metals and half-metals is studied using an all-optical pump-probe method: the time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect (TR-MOKE), combined with several advanced characterization techniques, such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). In Fe/Cr/GaAs heterostructures, the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) and the magnetic damping have been studied as a function of the thickness of Cr interlayer. The UMA is attributed to the Fe-GaAs chemical bonding at the interface via increasing the orbit moments of Fe atoms. The Cr interlayer with increasing thickness blocks the Fe-GaAs bonding and the UMA gradually. The magnetic damping shows a dramatic drop when Cr interlayer is deposited, even with only 0.5 ML. The results have indicated that the UMA and the damping originate from different mechanisms although the Fe/GaAs interface plays an important role in both phenomena. The correlation between magnetic damping and the electronic structures have been investigated in Co2FeAl Heusler alloy. By varying the growth temperature, both the magnetic damping and the electronic structure have been found affected significantly. It is experimentally demonstrated that the low damping constant originates from a low density of state (DOS) at Fermi level. A "shoulder-like" peak in the vicinity of Fermi level in the energy distribution curve would enhance the DOS and the damping. A pair of half-metallic Fe3O4 films, with and without structural defects, have been compared in order to investigate the effect of defects in magnetic damping. The enhancement of the intrinsic damping 0.063 in defect-free Fe3O4 sample is attributed to the emergence of the perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW), while the magnetic damping in the as-grown sample 0.039 is lower because the defects would scatter the spin wave or magnon and the energy transfer channel from the uniform precession to the PSSW does not exist.

Abstract:
Highly spin-polarised materials show great promise in applied spintronics as spin-filters and spin transfer torque magnetic random-access memory devices for data storage. However, controllable magnetisation switching requires materials with a low Gilbert damping parameter and stable magnetic properties at room temperature. Two highly spin-polarised magnetic materials with critical temperatures well above room temperature are characterised using a series of structural and magnetic analysis techniques. Correlation between the magnetic damping and microstructure is observed in both Fe3O4 and Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 samples and both are seen to improve structurally and show more favourable damping parameters with annealing. Annealing Fe3O4 in CO/CO2 is shown to reduce the antiphase boundary density and decrease the two-magnon scattering-like extrinsic damping effects. The quality of the sample structure and the stoichiometry is also seen to improve considerably after the annealing although the defects are not completely eliminated. An anomalous peak in the damping of the annealed film is observed at 10GHz Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 grown on germanium and silicon substrates is seen to also improve with thermal annealing. The Gilbert damping is seen to be lower in the as-grown scheme using the silicon substrate but greater reduction of damping post-annealing is seen on germanium. In both cases the B2 order is observed in the Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 thin films, and intermixing between the sample and substrate observed above 500oC is sufficient to disrupt the crystal structure and introduce significant extrinsic damping effects which increase the total damping. This prevents the Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 from reaching the more desirable L21 structure.

The current thesis seeks to demonstrate the relations of dystopias and scientific fiction notions with the virtual game series Half-Life and Metal Gear Solid, in addiction to understanding significant game titles in their influence. Such notions are problematized from the historical research of the scientific fictions, derived from literature and cinema, such as the own science conceptions during the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore, theoretical-methodological sources referred to the ludism, cinema and representation are used in order to establish the notions of dystopia presented in the specified games, in a link with the concepts of the pessimistic future existed in the scientific and artistic imaginary.

Abstract:
The double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 exhibits a half-metallic character with a Curie temperature of around 400 K and an appreciably large low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) at room-temperature (RT). Because of these properties, this compound is generally considered as a promising candidate for spintronic devices. However, the difficulties in preparing reproducible samples, and also, the need to increase further the LFMR at RT, constitute the limiting factors for device applications. With the aim to overcome theses difficulties and to enhance the magnetoresistance of this compound further, we carried out synthesis and physico-chemical characterization of Sr2FeMoO6 samples prepared using a citrate route. We studied the influence of various parameters used in the citrate route on the physico-chemical properties of our Sr2FeMoO6 samples, which successfully led us to the optimization of the magnetoresistive properties of this compound. In our samples we obtained a magnetoresistance value of about 6% at 300 K under a field of 1 kOe, which is similar to or better than the best reported values. Another distinguishing feature of our samples is the existence of magnetoresistance that persists up to at least 400 K. Similar studies, on the compositions Sr2-xFeMoO6 (x = 0. 02, 0. 04) and Sr2+xFeMoO6+x (x = 0. 02, 0. 04, 0. 10), provided us with the opportunity to discover others conditions that are important in the magnetoresistive effect in Sr2FeMoO6

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractLarge amounts of uranium-containing radioactive waste are generated in reactor operation and in the research and manufacture of nuclear fuel elements. At present, there are various uranium enrichment and separation methods such as reduction precipitation method, ion exchange method, solvent extraction method, membrane filtration method, adsorption method, and microorganism method to treat the uranium-containing radioactive waste generated in the related processes of nuclear facilities. However, the airborne effluent or liquid effluent discharged after treatment may still contain radioactive uranium. It is well known that uranium is a radioactive heavy metal element, and its radioactive and chemical toxicity cannot be ignored. Uranium in the environment enters the human body through the food route, and its long half-life can make the human body suffer from continuous radioactive internal radiation damage. As an environmental medium, organisms are closely related to the entry of uranium into the human body through food. Therefore, it is of great significance to carry out accurate measurement of uranium content in environmental-grade biological samples around nuclear facilities, however, complete and accurate measurement results include measurement data and uncertainty. Laser fluorescence method is a method for rapid analysis of uranium content in environmental samples. It has the advantages of high sensitivity, simple sample pretreatment, and wide measurement range, which has been widely used in nuclear industry, environmental monitoring and scientific research. At present, there is a lack of relevant reports on the uncertainty of the measurement of total uranium content in environmental-grade biological samples by laser fluorescence method. It is of great significance to accurately measure the uranium content in biological samples by evaluating the uncertainty of this method. In this paper, the WGJ-III trace uranium analyzer was used to analyze the uncertainty source of total uranium in environmental-grade biological samples by laser fluorescence method. The uncertainty measurement model was established, the uncertainty components were quantified, and the expanded uncertainty of the measurement of total uranium content in environmental biological samples was calculated. The evaluation results showed that the expanded uncertainty of a 0.05 g environmental biological sample is 10.8% (k = 2) without dilution, and the dominant uncertainty component is derived from the measurement uncertainty of sample fluorescence counting.

Abstract:
On a liquid metal electrode all surface sites are equivalent, and the deposition of a metal ion from the solution is conceptually simple: The ion loses a part of its solvation sheath, is transferred to the metal surface, and is discharged simultaneously; after a slight rearrangement of the surface atoms it is incorporated into the electrode. The details of the process are little understood, but it seems that the discharge step is generally rate determining, and the Butler-Volmer equation is obeyed if the concentration of the supporting electrolyte is sufficiently high. For example, the formation of lithium and sodium amalgams [1] in nonaqueous solvents according to: . . .Li + + e- ⇌ Li(Hg) Na+ = e- ⇌ Cd(Hg) . . . (10.1) obey the Butler-Volrner equation with transfer coefficients that depend on the solvent. On the other hand, the deposition of multivalent ions may involve several steps. Thus, the formation of zinc amalgam from aqueous solutions, with the overall reaction: . . . zn2+ + 2e- ⇌ Zn (Hg) . . . (10.2) occurs in two steps: First, Zn2+ is reduced to an intermediate Zn+ in an electron transfer step, and then the univalent ion is deposited [2]. In contrast, the surface of a solid metal offers various sites for metal deposition. Figure 10.1 shows a schematic diagram for a crystal surface with a quadratic lattice structure. A single atom sitting on a flat surface plane is denoted as an adatom; several such atoms can form an adatom cluster. A vacancy is formed by a single missing atom; several vacancies can be grouped to vacancy clusters. Steps are particularly important for crystal growth, with kink atoms, or atoms in the halfcrystal position, playing a special role. When a metal is deposited onto such a surface, the vacancies are soon filled. However, the addition of an atom in the kink position creates a new kink site; so at least on an infinite plane the number of kink sites does not change, and the current is maintained by incorporation into these sites. Similarly metal dissolution takes place predominantly at half-crystal positions, since the removal of a kink atom creates a new kink site.

Development of an Electrochemical Process for Blackwater Disinfection in a Freestanding, Additive-Free Toilet. RTI Press, April 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2017.rr.0031.1704.

Abstract:
Electrochemical disinfection has gained interest as an alternative to conventional wastewater treatment because of its high effectiveness and environmental compatibility. Two and a half billion people currently live without improved sanitation facilities. Our research efforts are focused on developing and implementing a freestanding, additive-free toilet system that treats and recycles blackwater on site. In this study, we sought to apply electrochemical disinfection to blackwater. We compared commercially available boron-doped diamond (BDD) and mixed metal oxide (MMO) electrodes for disinfection efficiency in E. coli–inoculated model wastewater. The MMO electrodes were found to be more efficient and thus selected for further study with blackwater. The energy required for disinfection by the MMO electrodes increased with the conductivity of the medium, decreased with increased temperature, and was independent of the applied voltage. Fecal contamination considerably increased the energy required for blackwater disinfection compared to model wastewater, demonstrating the need for testing in effluents representing the conditions of the final application.

Demchyna, Bohdan, and Yaroslav Shydlovskyi. Recommendations for Designing Wooden Arches on Metal-toothed Plates. Intellectual Archive, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32370/ia_2021_03_18.

Abstract:
This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads and provides in-plane stability of the arch. A methodology for laboratory testing of the prototype models of wooden arches subjected to different types of loads was developed. Two prototypes of wooden arches were tested with rectangular cross-sections and two T-section ones subjected to the loading across the span, and two prototypes subjected to the half-span loading. In total, eight arches were tested. Deflections of arches, cross-section deformations and arch thrust force were recorded. The arches were tested until failure. The results of testing revealed insufficient stability of the arches with rectangular cross-section in the horizontal plane. For the arches with T-section the whole arch rib was damaged, the in-plane stability was ensured by the T-section. The collapsing force of the T-section arch was about 1.3 times greater than the collapsing force of the rectangular section arches.
