Abstract:
New exact solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations are obtained for the unbounded and bounded oscillatory and impulsive tangential edgewise motion of touching half-infinite plates in their own plane. In contrast to Stokes classical solutions for the harmonic and impulsive motion of an infinite plane wall, where the solutions are separable or have a simple similarity form, the present solutions have a two-dimensional structure in the near region of the contact between the half-infinite plates. Nevertheless, it is possible to obtain relatively simple closed-form solutions for the flow field in each case by defining new variables which greatly simplify the r- and θ-dependence of the solutions in the vicinity of the contact region. These solutions for flow in a half-infinite space are then extended to bounded flows in a channel using an image superposition technique. The impulsive motion has application to the motion near geophysical faults, whereas the oscillatory motion has arisen in the design of a novel oscillating half-plate flow chamber for examining the effect of fluid shear stress on cultured cell monolayers.

Abstract:
THE SEARCHLIGHT SCHEDULING PROBLEM was first studied in 2-dimensional polygons, where the goal is for point guards in fixed positions to rotate searchlights to catch an evasive intruder. Here the problem is extended to 3-dimensional polyhedra, with the guards now boundary segments who rotate half-planes of illumination. After carefully detailing the 3-dimensional model, several results are established. The first is a nearly direct extension of the planar one-way sweep strategy using what filling guards, a generalization that succeeds despite there being no well-defined we call notion in 3-dimensional space of planar "clockwise rotation." Next follow two results: every polyhedron with r > 0 reflex edges can be searched by at most r2 suitably placed boundary guards, whereas just r edguards suffice if the polyhedron is orthogonal. (Mini-mizing the number of guards to search a given polyhedron is easily seen to be NP-hard.) Finally we show that deciding whether a given set of boundary guards has a successful search schedule is strongly NP-hard. A number of peripheral results are proved en route to these central theorems, and several open problems remain for future work.

Abstract:
We study two sets of models: independent percolation models in half spaces Zᵈ⁻¹ x Z₊, and Ising/Potts models as well as the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster models on branching planes T x Z, where Z is the one-dimensional lattice, Z₊ = {0,1,2,...} and T is a Bethe lattice. We prove that for independent percolation in half spaces, the infinite cluster is unique whenever it exists. For the Ising/Potts models on branching planes, there are (at least) two phase transitions; that is, there exist(s) a unique Gibbs state, tree-like nonunique Gibbs states or plane-like nonunique Gibbs states corresponding to high temperature, intermediate temperature or low temperature. In the low temperature plus phase, the plus infinite cluster is unique and it "traps" the space T x Z and prevents co-existence of the minus infinite cluster. For the FK random cluster models (which are dependent percolation models) on T x Z, the number of infinite (open) clusters may be zero, infinity or one depending on the value of p--the probability of each bond being open. This is an extension of Grimmett and Newman's results for independent percolation on T x Z. We also prove that both the independent percolation model and the FK random cluster models satisfy a finite island property when p is close to 1. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 contains the proof of the uniqueness theorem for independent percolation in half spaces. The proof utilizes only a large deviation estimate and translation invariance of the models along the hyperplane Zᵈ⁻¹ x {0}. The Ising/Potts models and the FK random cluster models on the branching planes are studied in Chapter 3. The methods are to use the FK representation of Ising/Potts systems as dependent percolation models to carry over Grimmett and Newman's results for independent percolation to the Ising/Potts models. However, in order to prove the plane-like behavior of the Ising/Potts models, the corresponding results for independent percolation are not sufficient and this led us to investigate independent percolation again and prove a new finite island property. Chapters 2 and 3 are independent. Readers with basic knowledge of percolation and Ising models can omit chapter 1 and read chapters 2 and 3 directly.

Abstract:
An elastic FGM layer bonded to a semi-infinite linear elastic, isotropic, homogeneous half plane is considered. The half plane contains periodic cracks perpendicular to the interface. Mechanical loading is applied through crack surface pressure, resulting in a mode I crack problem. The plane elasticity problem described above is formulated by using Fourier transforms and Fourier series. A singular integral equation is obtained for the auxiliary variable, namely derivative of the crack surface displacement. Solution is obtained, and stress intensity factors are calculated for various values of crack period, crack length, crack location, layer thickness and material gradation.

Abstract:
In this thesis we present certain spaces of analytic functions on the complex half-plane, including the Hardy, the Bergman spaces, and their generalisation: Zen spaces. We use the latter to construct a new type of spaces, which include the Dirichlet and the Hardy-Sobolev spaces. We show that the Laplace transform defines an isometric map from the weighted L^2(0, ∞) spaces into these newly-constructed spaces. These spaces are reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, and we employ their reproducing kernels to investigate their features. We compare corresponding spaces on the disk and on the half-plane. We present the notions of Carleson embeddings and Carleson measures and characterise them for the spaces introduced earlier, using the reproducing kernels, Carleson squares and Whitney decomposition of the half-plane into an abstract tree. We also study multiplication operators for these spaces. We show how the Carleson measures can be used to test the boundedness of these operators. We show that if a Hilbert space of complex valued functions is also a Banach algebra with respect to the pointwise multiplication, then it must be a reproducing kernel Hilbert space and its kernels are uniformly bounded. We provide examples of such spaces. We examine spectra and character spaces corresponding to multiplication operators. We study weighted composition operators and, using the concept of causality, we link the boundedness of such operators on Zen spaces to Bergman kernels and weighted Bergman spaces. We use this to show that a composition operator on a Zen space is bounded only if it has a finite angular derivative at infinity. We also prove that no such operator can be compact. We present an application of spaces of analytic functions on the half-plane in the study of linear evolution equations, linking the admissibility criterion for control and observation operators to the boundedness of Laplace-Carleson embeddings.

Abstract:
Radiative energy transfer as described by the classical radiation transfer theory of Planck is valid only when the distance between the participating surfaces is larger than a few wavelengths of the characteristic radiation. When the spacing is comparable to the wavelength, electromagnetic theory and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem can be used to predict the energy transfer between the surfaces. We have used the electromagnetic Green’s function method to model the thermal energy transfer between two half planes with planar layers in between. With polar materials as the half planes, we see a narrowband energy transfer in the near field due to energy transfer by surface phonon polaritons. We have used this technique to show that such a resonance, however dampened, persists even with the presence of a layer of photovoltaic material. This results in not only an increased energy transfer to the photovoltaic material as compared to black body radiation but also imparts a narrowband characteristic to it. The implications for thermophotovoltaics are discussed.

Abstract:
This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads and provides in-plane stability of the arch. A methodology for laboratory testing of the prototype models of wooden arches subjected to different types of loads was developed. Two prototypes of wooden arches were tested with rectangular cross-sections and two T-section ones subjected to the loading across the span, and two prototypes subjected to the half-span loading. In total, eight arches were tested. Deflections of arches, cross-section deformations and arch thrust force were recorded. The arches were tested until failure. The results of testing revealed insufficient stability of the arches with rectangular cross-section in the horizontal plane. For the arches with T-section the whole arch rib was damaged, the in-plane stability was ensured by the T-section. The collapsing force of the T-section arch was about 1.3 times greater than the collapsing force of the rectangular section arches.
