Wu, Chuntao. "Percolation in half spaces and Markov fields on branching planes." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185296.

Full text
Abstract:
We study two sets of models: independent percolation models in half spaces Zᵈ⁻¹ x Z₊, and Ising/Potts models as well as the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster models on branching planes T x Z, where Z is the one-dimensional lattice, Z₊ = {0,1,2,...} and T is a Bethe lattice. We prove that for independent percolation in half spaces, the infinite cluster is unique whenever it exists. For the Ising/Potts models on branching planes, there are (at least) two phase transitions; that is, there exist(s) a unique Gibbs state, tree-like nonunique Gibbs states or plane-like nonunique Gibbs states corresponding to high temperature, intermediate temperature or low temperature. In the low temperature plus phase, the plus infinite cluster is unique and it "traps" the space T x Z and prevents co-existence of the minus infinite cluster. For the FK random cluster models (which are dependent percolation models) on T x Z, the number of infinite (open) clusters may be zero, infinity or one depending on the value of p--the probability of each bond being open. This is an extension of Grimmett and Newman's results for independent percolation on T x Z. We also prove that both the independent percolation model and the FK random cluster models satisfy a finite island property when p is close to 1. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 contains the proof of the uniqueness theorem for independent percolation in half spaces. The proof utilizes only a large deviation estimate and translation invariance of the models along the hyperplane Zᵈ⁻¹ x {0}. The Ising/Potts models and the FK random cluster models on the branching planes are studied in Chapter 3. The methods are to use the FK representation of Ising/Potts systems as dependent percolation models to carry over Grimmett and Newman's results for independent percolation to the Ising/Potts models. However, in order to prove the plane-like behavior of the Ising/Potts models, the corresponding results for independent percolation are not sufficient and this led us to investigate independent percolation again and prove a new finite island property. Chapters 2 and 3 are independent. Readers with basic knowledge of percolation and Ising models can omit chapter 1 and read chapters 2 and 3 directly.

Abstract:
An elastic FGM layer bonded to a semi-infinite linear elastic, isotropic, homogeneous half plane is considered. The half plane contains periodic cracks perpendicular to the interface. Mechanical loading is applied through crack surface pressure, resulting in a mode I crack problem. The plane elasticity problem described above is formulated by using Fourier transforms and Fourier series. A singular integral equation is obtained for the auxiliary variable, namely derivative of the crack surface displacement. Solution is obtained, and stress intensity factors are calculated for various values of crack period, crack length, crack location, layer thickness and material gradation.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we present certain spaces of analytic functions on the complex half-plane, including the Hardy, the Bergman spaces, and their generalisation: Zen spaces. We use the latter to construct a new type of spaces, which include the Dirichlet and the Hardy-Sobolev spaces. We show that the Laplace transform defines an isometric map from the weighted L^2(0, ∞) spaces into these newly-constructed spaces. These spaces are reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, and we employ their reproducing kernels to investigate their features. We compare corresponding spaces on the disk and on the half-plane. We present the notions of Carleson embeddings and Carleson measures and characterise them for the spaces introduced earlier, using the reproducing kernels, Carleson squares and Whitney decomposition of the half-plane into an abstract tree. We also study multiplication operators for these spaces. We show how the Carleson measures can be used to test the boundedness of these operators. We show that if a Hilbert space of complex valued functions is also a Banach algebra with respect to the pointwise multiplication, then it must be a reproducing kernel Hilbert space and its kernels are uniformly bounded. We provide examples of such spaces. We examine spectra and character spaces corresponding to multiplication operators. We study weighted composition operators and, using the concept of causality, we link the boundedness of such operators on Zen spaces to Bergman kernels and weighted Bergman spaces. We use this to show that a composition operator on a Zen space is bounded only if it has a finite angular derivative at infinity. We also prove that no such operator can be compact. We present an application of spaces of analytic functions on the half-plane in the study of linear evolution equations, linking the admissibility criterion for control and observation operators to the boundedness of Laplace-Carleson embeddings.

Wang, Wenfei. "Aspects of wave propagation in anisotropic elastic half-spaces and plates." Thesis, Keele University, 2013. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/3737/.

Full text
Abstract:
The propagation of waves along elastic half-spaces and plates has long been an active research area with lots of applications in seismology andmodern industries. Much attention has been paid to the study of wave propagation in a linear isotropic solid with traction-free or fixed boundary conditions. However, much more investigation is deserved for anisotropic solids under other type of boundary conditions, or even a solid with a hump on its surface. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the influence of the elastic property and profile of propagation media and boundary conditions on wave speeds, and predict the wave speed in various situations. Chapter 1 is devoted to introducing the governing equations and several specific materials used as examples in subsequent analysis. Chapter 2 is concerned with the propagation of free surface waves on an elastic half-space that has a localized geometric inhomogeneity perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation (such waves are known as topography-guided surface waves). We use the Stroh formalism to examine how such hump modifies the surface wave speed slightly on an anisotropic elastic half-space. In Chapter 3, an asymptotic model is constructed to predict the speed of waves propagating along a thin elastic plate with elastically restrained boundary conditions (ERBC). The Stroh formalism is again applied to deal with general anisotropy, which can be specified later to analyze the case of linear isotropy and the transverse isotropy. Chapter 4 deals again with the case of a thin plate with ERBC as in the previous chapter, but the effects of pre-stress and the condition of incompressibility are also considered.

This dissertation is concerned with invertibility and one-sided invertibility of Toeplitz operators over the half plane whose generating functions admit homogenous discontinuities, and with stability of their pseudo finite sections. The invertibility criterium is given in terms of invertibility of a family of one dimensional Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous generating functions. The one-sided invertibility criterium is given it terms of constraints on the partial indices of certain Toeplitz operator valued function.

Pao, Hsueh-Yuan. "Interaction between a transient plane wave and a conductive half-space." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/187405.

Full text
Abstract:
A method which allows for the analytical evaluation of the interaction between a transient plane wave and a conductive half-space is presented. We assume that an electromagnetic plane wave is obliquely incident on a conducting half-space, which is modeled by a frequency independent permittivity and conductivity. The general case of the electromagnetic plane wave is divided into two polarizations: transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM). The time-domain expressions for the reflected and transmitted waves are first represented as inverse Laplace transforms. The transient fields are then shown to consist of two canonical integrals, f(β) and e(β)The canonical integrals, in turn, are solved analytically, thereby yielding closed-form solutions involving incomplete Lipschitz-Hankel integrals (ILHIs). The ILHIs are computed numerically using efficient convergent and asymptotic series expansions, thus enabling the efficient computation of the transient fields. The exact, closed-form expressions are verified by comparing with previously published results and with results obtained using standard numerical integration and fast Fourier transform algorithms. An asymptotic series representation for the ILHIs is then employed to obtain a relatively simple late-time approximation for the transient fields. This approximate late-time expression is shown to accurately model the fields over a large portion of their time history. The closed-form transient field expressions are used to investigate the effects of neglecting displacement currents when studying transient wave propagation in the conductive half-space. The diffusion fields are found to yield accurate results at late times.

Abstract:
The main study of this thesis is the holomorphic functional calculi for three classes of unbounded operators: sectorial, strip-type and half-plane. The functional calculus for sectorial operators was introduced by McIntosh as an extension of the Riesz-Dunford model for bounded operators. More recently Haase has developed an abstract framework which incorporates analogous constructions for strip-type and half-plane operators. These operators are of interest since they arise naturally as generators of C0-(semi)groups. The theory of bounded H-calculus for sectorial operators is well established and it has been found to have many applications in operator theory and parabolic evolution equations. We survey these known results, first on Hilbert space and then on general Banach space. Our main goal is to fill the gaps in the parallel theory for strip-type operators. Whilst some of this can be deduced by taking exponentials and applying known results for sectorial operators, in general this is insu_cient to obtain our desired results and so we pursue an independent approach. Starting on Hilbert space, we broaden known characterisations of the bounded H-calculus for strip-type operators by introducing a notion of absolute calculus which is an analogue to the established notion for the sectorial case. Moving to general Banach space, we build on the work of Vörös, broadening his characterisation for strip-type operators in terms of weak integral estimates by introducing a new, but equivalent, notion of the bounded H-calculus, which we call the m-bounded calculus. We also demonstrate that these characterisations fail for half-plane operators and instead present a weaker form of the bounded H-calculus which is more natural for these operators. This allows us to obtain new and simple proofs of well known generation theorems due to Gomilko and Shi-Feng, with extensions to polynomially bounded semigroups. The connection between the bounded H-calculus of semigroup generators and polynomial boundedness of their associated Cayley Transforms is also explored. Finally we present a series of results on sums of operators, in connection with maximal regularity. We also establish stability results for the bounded H-calculus for strip-type operators by showing it is preserved under suitable bounded perturbations, which at time requires further assumptions on the underlying Banach space. This relies heavily on intermediate characterisations of the bounded H-calculus due to Kalton and Weis.

Abstract:
A quantum group is a noncommutative noncocommutative Hopf algebra. In this thesis we deform the locally convex Hopf algebra of locally analytic functions on GL(2,O), where O is the valuation ring of a finite extension of the p-adic numbers. We show that this deformation is a noncommutative noncocommutative locally convex Hopf algebra, i.e. a p-adic quantum group. Our main result is that the strong dual of our deformation is a Fréchet Stein algebra, i.e. a projective limit of Noetherian Banach algebras with right flat transition maps. This was shown in the commutative case by P. Schneider and J. Teitelbaum. For our proof in the noncommutative case we use ideas of M. Emerton, who gave an alternative proof of the Fréchet Stein property in the commutative case. For the proof we describe completions of the quantum enveloping algebra and use partial divided powers. An important class of locally analytic representations of GL(2,K) is constructed from global sections of line bundles on the p-adic upper half plane. We construct a noncommutative analogue of an affine version of the p-adic upper half plane which we expect to give rise to interesting representations of our p-adic quantum group. We construct this space by using the Manin quantum plane, the Bruhat-Tits tree for PGL(2,K) and the theory of algebraic microlocalization.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with determining the possibility of the existence of subsonic free surface waves in piezoelectric half-spaces, and of subsonic free edge waves in elastic laminated semi-infinite plates, where the material constants are not presumed to possess any particular special form of symmetry. By means of an introduction, standard analytical results are presented for the existence and uniqueness of surface waves and edge waves in isotropic elastic half-spaces and semi-infinite plates respectively, together with analytical expressions for the wave speeds. A re-analysis of the problem of determining the existence of surface waves in piezoelectric half-spaces is then presented. Lothe and Barnet [30] solved this problem using ideas from the Stroh formalism, whereas the work presented here arrives at the same conclusions by using different analytical methods. For the electrically open boundary condition it is shown that at most one surface wave may exist, and when the boundary condition is not electrically open then at least one and at most two surface waves may exist. A computer program was used to calculate the surface wave speeds for a variety of boundary conditions. The numerical results obtained are shown to be in agreement with the theory. Original theoretical work is then presented regarding the existence of waves propagating along the edge of an elastic laminated plate. The problem is resolved using an octet formalism, and it is shown that when a normal transonic state is present then at least one and at most two edge waves may exist. In the case where there is an exceptional transonic state, then it is possible that zero, one or two edge waves may exist. Numerical results relating to edge wave speeds are then obtained using another computer program, and are found not to conflict with the theory.

Dalton, David Raymond. "Derivation and practical application of exact time domain solutions for diffraction of acoustic waves by a half plane." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27866.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of diffraction theory, exact frequency domain solutions and selected past time domain solutions are briefly reviewed. Exact time domain solutions for scattering of plane, cylindrical and spherical acoustic waves by a half plane are derived by inverse Fourier transforming the frequency domain integral solutions. The solutions consist of two diffraction terms, a reflected term and a direct term. The diffracting edge induces step function discontinuities in the direct and reflected terms at two shadow boundaries. At each boundary, the associated diffraction term reaches a maximum amplitude of half the geometrical optics term and has a signum function discontinuity, so that the total field remains continuous. A physical interpretation is developed in terms of Huygen's principle near the diffracting edge. Solutions for practical point source configurations are evaluated by numerically convolving the impulse diffraction responses with a wavelet. The numerical problems presented by convolution with a singular, truncated operator are solved by analytically derived correction techniques, which are favourably compared to those used by earlier authors. The diffraction solution collapses into a compact discretized formulation. The half plane is shown to be a limiting form of wedge solutions, which can thus be computed using similar algorithms. Two zero offset sections are produced and compared to approximate Kirchhoff integral solutions. The exact diffraction hyperbola is noticeably non-symmetric, with higher amplitudes on the reflector side of the edge. Near the apex of the hyperbola the Kirchhoff solution is nearly equivalent to the exact diffraction term symmetric in amplitude about the reflection shadow boundary but fails to describe the other, low amplitude, term equivalent to half the response of a line scatterer. The differences are more noticeable on the flanks of the hyperbola, where the two terms are comparable in amplitude, and at shallow depths, due to an aperture effect. Increasing either the depth of the edge or the angle of the seismic line to the normal to the edge results in a flatter diffraction hyperbola showing little amplitude variation with moveout. As the seismic line becomes parallel to the edge the diffraction curve becomes flat and is indistinguishable from a reflection event. At great depth diffraction events may be mistaken for reflection events as well. Examples of CDP and CSP gathers, when compared to the Common Offset (CO) gathers, demonstrate that CO gathers are optimal for diffraction processing. Also, since the diffraction moveout and reflection moveout curves differ widely except for depth points near the edge, normal moveout stacking will distort the diffractions and diffraction stacking is essential to retain diffraction information. Strips of varying width are modelled by superposition of half planes to demonstrate resolution effects and show that the limit of a strip is a line scatterer. A dipping strip and an offset half plane model are produced and added for later comparison with wedge solutions.

Abstract:

In 2D, it consists in coupling several plane-wave representations in half-spaces surrounding the obstacle(s) with a Finite Element computation of the solution in a bounded domain. To ensure the matching of all these representations, the traces of the solution are linked by Fourier-integral equations set on the infinite boundaries of the half-spaces. In the case of a dissipative medium, this system of integral equations was proved to be coercive plus compact in an L² framework. In the present thesis, we derive error estimates with respect to the discretization parameters (both in space and Fourier variables). To handle the non-dissipative case, we propose a modified version of the Half-Space Matching Method, which is obtained by applying a complex-scaling to the unknowns, in order to recover the L² framework. We then extend the Half-Space Matching Method to scattering problems in infinite 3D elastic plates for applications to Non-Destructive Testing. The additional complexity compared to the 2D case comes from the decomposition on Lamb modes used in the half-plate representations. Due to the bi-orthogonality relation of Lamb modes, we have to consider as unknowns not only the displacement, but also the normal stress on the infinite bands limiting the half-plates. Some theoretical questions concerning this multi-unknown formulation involving the trace and the normal trace are studied in a 2D scalar case. Connections with integral methods are also addressed in the case where the Green's function is known, at least partially in each subdomain. The different versions of the method have been implemented in the library XLiFE++ and numerical results are presented for both 2D and 3D cases

Abstract:
Given a full-range simply-invariant shift-invariant subspace M of the vector-valued L2 space on the unit circle, the classical Beurling-Lax-Halmos (BLH) theorem obtains a unitary operator-valued function W so that M may be represented as the image of of the Hardy space H2 on the disc under multiplication by W. The work of Ball-Helton later extended this result to find a single function representing a so-called dual shift-invariant pair of subspaces (M,MÃ ) which together form a direct-sum decomposition of L2. In the case where the pair (M,MÃ ) are finite-dimensional perturbations of the Hardy space H2 and its orthogonal complement, Ball-Gohberg-Rodman obtained a transfer function realization for the representing function W; this realization was parameterized in terms of zero-pole data computed from the pair (M,MÃ ). Later work by Ball-Raney extended this analysis to the case of nonrational functions W where the zero-pole data is taken in an infinite-dimensional operator theoretic sense. The current work obtains analogues of these various results for arbitrary dual shift-invariant pairs (M,MÃ ) of the L2 spaces on the real line; here, shift-invariance refers to invariance under the translation group. These new results rely on recent advances in the understanding of continuous-time infinite-dimensional input-state-output linear systems which have been codified in the book by Staffans.

Voloshin, Vitaly. "Moving load on elastic structures : passage through the wave speed barriers." Thesis, Brunel University, 2010. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/4614.

Full text
Abstract:
The asymptotic behaviour of an elastically supported infinite string and an elastic isotropic half plane (in frames of specific asymptotic model) under a moving point load are studied. The main results of this work are uniform asymptotic formulae and the asymptotic profile for the string and the exact solution and uniform asymptotic formulae for a half plane. The crucial assumption for both structures is that the acceleration is sufficiently small. In order to describe asymptotically the oscillations of an infinite string auxiliary canonical functions are introduced, asymptotically analyzed and tabulated. Using these functions uniform asymptotic formulae for the string under constant accelerating and decelerating point loads are obtained. Approximate formulae for the displacement in the vicinity of the point load and the singularity area behind the shock wave using the steady speed asymptotic expansion with additional contributions from stationary points where appropriate are derived. It is shown how to generalise uniform asymptotic results to the arbitrary acceleration case. As an example these results are applied for the case of sinusoidal load speed. It is shown that the canonical functions can successfully be used in the arbitrary acceleration case as well. The graphical comparative analysis of numerical solu- tion and approximations is provided for different moving load speed intervals and values of the parameters. Vibrations of an elastic half plane are studied within the framework of the asymp- totic model suggested by J. Kaplunov et al. in 2006. Boundary conditions for the main problem are obtained as a solution for the problem of a string on the surface of a half plane subject to uniformly accelerated moving load. The exact solution over the interior of the half plane is derived with respect to boundary conditions. Steady speed and Rayleigh wave speed asymptotic expansions are obtained. In the neighborhood of the Rayleigh speed the uniform asymptotic formulae are derived. Some of their interesting properties are discovered and briefly studied. The graphical comparative analysis of the exact solution and approximations is provided for different moving load speed intervals and values of the parameters.

Basham, Cortney S. "Hal Lindsey's The Late, Great Planet Earth and the Rise of Popular Premillennialism in the 1970s." TopSCHOLAR®, 2012. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1205.

Abstract:
How people think about the end of the world greatly affects how they live in the present. This thesis examines how popular American thought about “the end of the world” has been greatly affected by Hal Lindsey’s 1970 popular prophecy book The Late, Great Planet Earth. LGPE sold more copies than any other non-fiction book in the 1970s and greatly aided the mainstreaming of “end-times” ideas like the Antichrist, nuclear holocaust, the Rapture, and various other concepts connected with popular end-times thought. These ideas stem from a specific strain of late-nineteenth century Biblical interpretation known as dispensational premillennialism, which has manifested in various schools of premillennial thought over the last 150 years. However, Lindsey translated this complicated system into modern language and connected it with contemporary geopolitics in powerful ways which helped make LGPE incredibly popular and influential in the 1970s and beyond. This paper includes an introduction to some essential concepts and terms related to popular premillennialism followed by a brief history of popular prophecy in America. The second half of this thesis examines the social, religious, and political climate of the 1970s and how Lindsey’s success connects to the culture of the Seventies, specifically conservative reactions to the various social movements of the 1960s. The last major section discusses Lindsey’s malleable theology and the power of interpreting the Bible “literally.” In the 1970s, conservative theologians and denominations won the battle to define certain concepts within Christianity including terms like “literal,” “inerrant,” and related terms, and Lindsey’s treatment of “the end times” reflects these definitions and how they affect Biblical interpretation. Finally, the conclusion fleshes out the appeal of popular premillennialism in the 1970s and into the present day.

Abstract:
New Caledonia is recognized as one of the main hotspots on the world. Unfortunately, its exceptional biodiversity is threatened by the rapid development of human activities. Hence, impacted natural environments must be restored to maintain the ecosystem services they provide. The main objective of this study was to propose the establishment of active restoration by ecological continuities which take into account mode of dispersion, germination of plant species as well as the distances from plantations to natural vegetation. For answer to this objective, the implementation of a database containing the characteristics of dispersal, dormancy and desiccation tolerance of seeds of 407 taxa found in maquis or both maquis and forest was carried out. Then, an evaluation of the recovery progress of revegetated areas by plantation was carried out. Finally, floristic inventories in the natural vegetations of the area study have enable to characterize their structure, their composition and to determine 37 vegetal species called "candidate" to be prioritized in the future restoration projects, by their high phenotypic plasticity allowing thern to develop both in open and closed environments. Twelve of thern have been the subject of a phonological (flower and fruit) and germination study
