Abstract:
One of indications of the success in poetry translation is source language (SL) rhyme and meaning can be transferred into target language (TL) simultaneously. However, sometimes rhyme translation shift cannot be avoided to keep the meaning of SL. This is a qualitative descriptive research that aims to explore rhyme shift and its effect toward translation meaning accuracy. The data were SL-TL rhymes pairs found in eight poems translated by Taufiq Ismail. The analysis result showed that there were various rhyme shifts, including fixed rhymes, partial shift rhymes, and full shift rhymes. Accurate rhyme shifts (without any type rhyme shift) happens on more than a half of entire data. The shifts found were not influence the accuracy of poem meaning. Basically, those were developed as an effort to preserve poems message as a part of universal literature piece.

ABSTRACTThis study deals with repentistas: oral poets in the northeast of Brazil, most of whom have had limited schooling. Twenty-four repentistas, 27 non-repentistas from a similar background, and 38 university students were given a rhyme production task. The repentistas produced about three times as many rhymes as the SES-matched non-repentistas and over one-and-a-half times as many as the students. They did not, however, differ significantly from the nonrepentistas or students in regard to auditory memory or phonological segmentation; they were similar to non-repentistas and considerably worse than students on tests of IQ and reading speed. Thus, the rhyming ability of the repentistas appears to be both highly developed and dissociated from certain other language skills.

Abstract:
This small article is an addition to the commentaries included in the first volume of the two volume edition of rhymes and poems by Georgy Shengeli published in 2017. We show that the quatrain “Старый доктор в обветшалой тоге...” (“The old doctor in the decrepit toga...” ) written in August 1943, which the compiler of the volume regards as unfinished, is in a fact a quite holistic extempore rhyme – the remake of a final strophe of Nikolay Gumilyov's rhyme “Bologna”. We bring forward the hypothesis that the first line of the Shengeli's quatrain contains an allusion to the first line of another Gumilyov's rhyme – “The spell” and we examine the connection between this quatrain and the rhyme “В шаге легком и упругом...” (“In the light and springy stride...”) written a month and a half later.

Abstract:
Purpose To examine how adults with dyslexia versus adults with typical reading form lexical representations during pseudoword learning. Method Twenty adults with dyslexia and 20 adults with typical reading learned meanings, spellings, and pronunciations of 16 pictured pseudowords, (half with regular and half with irregular grapheme-phoneme correspondences) presented first in 1 modality (spoken or written) and then the 2nd modality. Dependent measures included picture naming and identification, episodic recognition, a rhyme task, and a categorization task. Results Adults with dyslexia learned pseudowords more slowly than those with typical reading and were disproportionately poor in learning irregularly spelled pseudowords after changing from written to spoken modality. Adults with dyslexia recognized fewer pseudoword forms than adults with typical reading and verified fewer pseudoword rhymes. Adults with typical reading were more accurate with categorizing regular versus irregular pseudowords. Adults with dyslexia did not show this regularity advantage. Conclusions Adults with dyslexia, compared with adults with typical reading, failed to (a) encode and retrieve detailed information about pseudoword forms, (b) efficiently form cross-modal associations between written and spoken encounters with pseudowords, and (c) effectively modify their representations following the change in modality. The authors discuss implications relative to common theories of dyslexia.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: This study explores metric patterns of syi’iran and syair, genres of poetry indicated to bear close relation with the pattern of Arabic syair. The genres include classical poetry in Malay, Javanese, and Sundanese. Methodology: Research is conducted with a qualitative approach towards a data pool of syi’iran and syair, collected purposively to determine its relation with the rhymes and metrics of Arabic syair and its uniqueness compared to other forms of poetry in the Archipelago. Main Findings: The research concludes that syi’iran and syair are poetic genres with the following characteristics: (1) posses a basic structure of couplets, (2) bear a specific rhyme pattern of consonant and vowel phonemes in up to two syllables at the end of each line, in every two to four adjacent lines, and (3) display distinct metric of consistent rhythmic half-lines. The three characteristics are indicative of its relationship with Arabic poetry. Applications of this study: Research findings shall become a foundation to redefine the literary terminology of poetry and assist in philological criticism in Indonesia, although its uses in teachings and researches in both fields will need further promotion, both inside and outside the country. Novelty/Originality of this study: The approach applied in the research allows the identification of metric patterns in various forms of poetry that have been circulating in Indonesia for centuries but have yet to be scientifically formulated, or even theoretically identified by scholars.

Abstract My article focuses on the Franco-Italian poem Attila Flagellum Dei, composed by Nicolò da Càsola, an Italian notary, in the second half of the XIV century for the Estensi in Ferrara, in order to celebrate the heroic origins of the family: actually, it is the first encomiastic poem dedicated to them, before the major works by Boiardo and Ariosto. The poem is witnessed by a single manuscript (divided into two tomes), supposedly in the hand of the author himself. My study provides a new biographic profile of Nicolò and his family, also through an overview of some archival documents from the Archivio di Stato in Bologna. The article also presents a brief summary of the narration, and outlines the principal characters, the positive ones (Forest and Gilius in particular) as well as the negative ones (Attila), seen as prototypes alluding to other fictional or historical figures (Forest = Hector of Troy; Attila = the entire Visconti’s family). At last, my paper offers a sample (the proem) of the critical and commented edition I am working at. The text is preceded by an analysis that illustrates its peculiar linguistic features, with a particular regard on the rhymes: indeed, far from being representative of the generic class of Franco-italian works composed by Italo-Romance authors, the poem Attila Flagellum Dei shows a combination of hypercharacterized French and Italo-Romance dialects of Northern Italy.

Abstract:

Language-play can briefly be described as the wilful manipulation of the peculiarities of a linguistic system in a way that draws attention to these peculiarities themselves, thereby causing a communicative and cognitive effect that goes beyond the conveyance of propositional meaning. Among the various phenomena answering this description are the different kinds of puns, but also more strictly form-based manipulations such as rhymes and alliteration, in addition to a host of other, sometimes even fuzzier, subcategories.

Due to its unusual nature, and especially its frequently strong dependence on the idiosyncrasies of a particular language, language-play can generally be assumed to constitute a significant challenge in a translation context. Furthermore, given its non-negligible effects, the translator is not free to simply ignore the language-play (provided it has been recognized as such in the first place) without having taken an active stance on its treatment. However, the difficulties in finding a suitable target-language solution are possibly exacerbated if the source text is a complex multimedia product such as a film, the translation of which, normally in the form of dubbing or subtitling, is subject to additional constraints.

In view of these intricacies, it has been the aim of this study to analyze and measure how language-play in film has actually been treated in authentic dubbing and subtitle versions. As a prerequisite, the concept of language-play has been elaborated on, and more than a dozen subcategories have been described, developed, and employed. For the purpose of carrying out a meaningful analysis of the dubbing and subtitling of language-play, a corpus has been compiled, comprising 18 family films and 99 of their various target versions, most on DVD, and yielding nearly 800 source-text instances of language-play and thousands of translation solutions.

The results indicate that especially two sets of factors, among the many that are likely to influence a translation, play a prominent role: the type of the language-play, and the identity and working conditions of the translator. By contrast, the mode of translation (dubbing vs. subtitling), the target language, or the general properties of the films, could not be shown to have a sizeable impact.
