Author, feminist, nationalist, modernist, educator, and member of the National Assembly, she identified her person and career with the transformation of Turkey into a modern secular republic. Educated in the internationalist spirit of the American College for Girls in Istanbul, she was, throughout her life, a cosmopolitan intellectual with an international audience. Edib's personal transition from Ottoman society to the new nationalist elite, and her homeland's transition from empire to republic, posed no insurmountable historical, social, and cultural discontinuities; hers was a nationalism that, although grounded in Western notions of emancipation and self-determination, asserted with confidence its distinct identity and autonomy from the West.

Abstract:
Halide Edib positioned herself as a main agent and figure of the Turkish nationalist movement, as both visionary and defender of her nation. Contributing to the evolving discourse on what it meant to be Turkish; Edib placed the family at the center of the state and identified women as state-builders. Through her interpretation of Turkish nationalism, I argue that Edib obscured the division between the public and private realm and classified women as agents in the creation of the Republic. I further contend that by doing this she contributed to the legitimization of Turkey on an international scale. This thesis focuses on the speeches Halide Edib delivered at the university Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi in 1935. These particular speeches are significant because they work towards a legitimization of Turkey, still in its infancy, as a nation, by addressing the "woman question." Halide Edib's view of a "new nation" and a "new woman" articulated in these speeches challenged contemporary views on women in a society at a political and cultural crossroads, overwhelmingly dominated by men.The power dynamics within the family and society at large are nuanced by Halide Edib's understanding of Turkish women's part in the national process during the formative years of the Turkish Republic. She depicted women as agents of nationalism and creators of the state. In doing this, she challenged both the ideological and applied position of women in the private realm, through her own discursive understanding of nationalism. Edib's definition of nationalism included the tenets of gender relations, family, and Islam and described each as a necessary component of a successful state.

Abstract:
This thesis studies three novels of the Turkish writer Halide Edib (1884-1964) written between 1908 and 1912, and examines this historical period and her life during it. The thesis deals with the 1908 Constitutional Revolution, the '31 March Incident' and the Turkist movement, as reflected in her novels, as well as independently through secondary sources. The examination of Raik'in Annesi (1980) reveals Edib's ideas on 'ideal womanhood,' morality and divorce. Seviyye Talib (1990) includes her views on the Constitutional Revolution, women's modernisation and the '31 March Incident.' The study of Yeni Turan (1912) reveals much about Turkism, or Turanism, and its political opponent in the novel, Ottomanism. From these novels Edib's main ideas are brought out and examined. Among the recurrent themes analysed are her strong admiration for the Angle-Saxon culture, her understanding of Westernisation, her approach to Islam, and her views on women and family.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the depiction of female characters as New Women in a comparative analysis of the fiction of two authors from fin-de-siècle United States of America and late Ottoman/early Republican Turkey: Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth (1905), The Custom of the Country (1913) and The Age of Innocence (1920), and Halide Edib Adıvar’s Raik’in Annesi (Raik’s Mother, 1909), Handan (Handan, 1912) and Kalp Ağrısı (Heartache, 1924). It argues that these novels can be read as examples of New Woman fiction, with their challenge to conventional fictional treatments of womanhood and their depiction of complex female heroines struggling against restrictive social roles, conventions and moral codes. Examining these texts together opens up a hitherto unexplored area of comparison into how the construct of New Womanhood was perceived and dealt with differently (and similarly) in the American and Turkish societies of the era. The thesis brings a new approach to the analysis of the novels under question not only by reading Wharton’s and Adıvar’s fiction in a comparative perspective but also by approaching New Woman fiction by means of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of dialogism, complemented by the work of feminist critics such as Dale M. Bauer, Gail Cunningham, Luce Irigaray and Lyn Pykett. A feminist dialogic approach informs my reading of the novels as texts that present a pluralistic exchange between multiple discourses and that resist a singular interpretation - instead offering multiple “readings”, with a surface narrative and counter narrative: whilst the surface narrative appears as authoritative and seeks to maintain the status quo (through voices that attempt to stabilise the New Woman and assert the authority of conventions and moral codes), this is disrupted and destabilised by the subversive marginal voices of the counter narrative. By attending in this way to the juxtaposition of a multiplicity of conflicting voices on the New Woman question in the texts - particularly as these are expressed in the heroines’ inner dilemmas and conflicts and around the issues of marriage, divorce and sexuality - I attempt to go beyond a reading of the texts as reflections of the biography of the authors or their views regarding a certain model of female identity, instead emphasising the problematisation and unfixing of identity in the novels and their depiction of New Women that are complex, fragmented and contradictory. Furthermore, influenced by the ideas of feminist thinkers such as Judi M. Roller and Elizabeth Bronfen, I propose that the unhappy endings of Wharton’s and Adıvar’s novels can be read as critiques of the oppressive effects of hegemonic discourses about women and a recognition of female agency and struggle. By examining these aspects of the novels, this comparative thesis aims to contribute to feminist studies focused upon the “woman question” and to the growing body of scholarly work on the New Woman.

Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kurulması ile birlikte modernleşme projesinin en önemli hedeflerinden biri kadının toplumsal konumunun ve imajının değiştirilmesi ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Atatürk Türk ulusunu ileriye taşıyacak reformist hareketlere dayandırdığı devrimleri hiçbir ön yargı ve bağnazlığa izin vermeyecek şekilde Batı toplumlarını örnek alarak oluşturulmuştur. Atatürk, yapılan devrimlerle sağlam bir temel atmış, bu temelin sarsılmaması için güçlendirici uygulamalar geliştirmiştir Latin alfabesinin kabulü, Batı tarzı kılık kıyafet usullerinin benimsenmesi, medenî kanunun kabulü vb. inkılâplarla Batılılaşma süreci ivme kazanırken, hedef ve sonuç bakımından modernleşme tarihimizin en uzun menzilli girişimi ile gerçekleşmiştir. Bu çalışma; Atatürk’ün inkılapları arasında yer alan erkekler için uygulamaya konan kıyafet kanununun ardından kadının dış görünümünün değişimini sağlamak, kadını Avrupalı hemcinsleri ile aynı düzeye getirebilmek amacıyla ne gibi uygulamalar üzerinde durduğu ve yapılması gerekenleri nasıl yönlendirdiğinin araştırılması ve dünyada benzeri olmayan söz konusu modernleşmenin nasıl gerçekleştirildiğinin öneminin vurgulanması amacıyla planlanmış ve yürütülmüştür. Çalışmada, betimsel araştırma yöntemlerinden tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini 1920-1940 yılları arasında Türkiye Cumhuriyeti sınırları içerisinde yaşamış kadınlara ilişkin görsel dokümanlar ile döneme ait yazılı belgeler (gazete, dergi, doküman, belge vb.), giysi örnekleri ve ilgili literatür oluşturmaktadır. Atatürk’ün kurduğu cumhuriyetin kadınlarının özellikle batılı hemcinsleri gibi bir düzeye erişerek modern çağa ayak uydurabilmesi için söylemlerinde bahsettiği ve kanunlara dayanmayan ancak incelikle üzerinde düşünerek yaptırmış olduğu uygulamalar üzerine yorumlar getirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Atatürk ile birlikte Ziya Gökalp, Halide Edip Adıvar, Atatürk’ün manevi kızı Afet İnan, İsmet İnönü’nün eşi Mevhibe İnönü vb. pek çok kişi yeni Türk kadınının imajının oluşturulmasında önemli rolleri üstlenmişler ve özellikle Atatürk tarafından kadınlara örnek olmaları için görevlendirilmişlerdir. Türkiye'de kadın giysilerindeki değişim, erkek giysilerinden daha yavaş ancak daha radikal olarak değişim göstermiştir. Dünyadaki kadının daha uzun bir zamanda geçirdiği değişimi, Türk kadını çok daha kısa bir zamanda gerçekleştirmiştir.

Abstract:
Abstract Test engineers and failure analyst familiar with random access memory arrays have probably encountered the frustration of dealing with address descrambling. The resulting nonsequential internal bit cell counting scheme often means that the location of the failing cell under investigation is nowhere near where it is expected to be. A logical to physical algorithm for decoding the standard library block might have been provided with the design, but is it still correct now that the array has been halved and inverted to fit the available space in a new processor chip? Off-line labs have traditionally been tasked with array layout verification. In the past, hard and soft failures could be induced on the frontside of finished product, then bitmapped to see if the sites were in agreement. As density tightened, flip-chip FIB techniques to induce a pattern of hard fails on packaged devices came into practice. While the backside FIB edit method is effective, it is complex and expensive. The installation of an in-line Dual Beam FIB created new opportunities to move FA tasks out of the lab and into the FAB. Using a new edit procedure, selected wafers have an extensive pattern of defects 'written' directly into the memory array at an early process level. Bitmapping of the RAM blocks upon wafer completion is then used to verify correlation between the physical damaged cells and the logical sites called out in the test results. This early feedback in-line methodology has worked so well that it has almost entirely displaced the complex laboratory procedure of backside FIB memory array descramble verification.

Abstract:
Temelleri XIX. yüzyılda Avrupa’da atılan halk bilgisi çalışmalarının Türkiye’de bir disiplin olarak ele alınışı XX. yüzyılın başlarına tarihlenmektedir. Kültür politikaları çerçevesinde çeşitli faaliyetlerin yürütüldüğü bu dönemde kurulan derneklerin yanı sıra uzman ve özellikle “amatör” halk bilgisi araştırmacıları tarafından yapılan yayın ve derlemeler oldukça önemlidir. Atatürk dönemindeki kültür politikalarının bir gereği olarak başlatılan bu derlemelerin resmî merkezi haline gelen ve Türk Ocaklarının (Mart 1912) yerine kurulan Halkevlerinin (Şubat 1932) çalışmaları ile Halkevleri tarafından çıkarılan yayınlar, halkbilimi araştırmalarının geleceği açısından önemli olmuş ve böylece halk kültürü araştırmaları yeni bir ivme kazanmıştır. Bu dönemde bahsi geçen devlet destekli kurum ve yayın organlarının dışında yer almakla beraber halk bilgisi alanına dâhil edilebilen ve yerel basın temelinde şekillenen yayın faaliyetlerini de görmek mümkündür. Söz konusu faaliyetlerden biri, 16 Ağustos 1935 yılında yayın hayatına başlayıp 4 Mayıs 1936 tarihinde yayın hayatını sonlandıran Devrim gazetesidir. İbrahim Cemal Aliş tarafından Bartın’da çıkarılmış olan bu yerel gazetenin önemi, halk bilgisine ayırdığı sütunlarıdır. Türk folklor tarihinde önemli bir kaynak durumunda olup “Günlük Siyasal Gazete” alt başlığıyla yayınlanan ve 89. sayısı ile son yayınını yapan gazetenin önemli bir yönü, dünya tarihinden ziyade yerel tarihe ve kültüre ayırdığı sütunlarıdır. Özellikle “Halk Bilgisi” adıyla halk kültürüne ilişkin derlemelere ve incelemelere ayrılan gazetedeki yazı köşeleri, günümüz halkbilim araştırmaları için önemli bir yere sahiptir. Yayımladığı 89 sayının 55’inde halk bilgisine ayırdığı sütunlarıyla dikkat çeken bu yayının, dönemi bağlamında, “yerel halk bilgisi dergisi” işlevi gördüğü söylenebilir. Bu bağlamda bildiride, Atatürk dönemi kültür politikaları içinde milliyetçilik ve halkçılık ilkeleri temelinde hareket edip yayın yapmış olan Devrim gazetesi incelenecektir. Bildiride Atatürk dönemindeki halk bilgisi (folklor) ile ilgili faaliyetlere değinildikten sonra 1920’den Devrim’in çıkarıldığı döneme kadar olan süreçte (1936) yerel basın (gazete ve dergi) özelindeki halk bilgisi çalışmaları hakkında bilgi verilecektir. Ardından Atatürk döneminde yayın yapmış olan gazetenin Türk halkbilimi araştırmaları tarihindeki yerinden bahsedilecek ve buradan hareketle halkbilimi araştırmalarında yerel gazetelerin önemi üzerinde durulacaktır.

Abstract:
İtalyan düşünür Giorgio Agamben, henüz salgın küresel ölçekli bir hal almamışken 26 Şubat 2020 tarihinde «Covid-19: Gerekçesiz Bir Acil Durumun Yarattığı İstisna Hali» başlıklı bir bildiri/makale yayınladı1 ve daha sonraki süreçte salgının yayılmasıyla birlikte, makaledeki tavrı dolayısıyla giderek hedef tahtasına oturtulan bir isim olarak öne çıktı. Agamben’in özetle söylediği, pandeminin hükümetler için giderek araçsal bir hal aldığı ve küresel ölçekli olarak herkesin gönüllü şekilde biyopolitik manada gözetime katıldığı bir duruma dönüştüğüdür. Bir anlamda sağlık/güvenlik için mahremiyetten vazgeçişi buyuran pandemi sürecinde gözetim ise, dünyanın farklı ülkelerindeki mobil uygulamalar ile (örneğin; İngiltere’de NHS, Çin’de Alipay, Almanya’da Corona-Warn- App, İtalya’da Immuni) vatandaşların her anının takip edilmesiyle gerçekleşmektedir. Bu anlamda Çin’deki Alipay uygulaması oldukça önemlidir. Uygulamanın sağladığı QR kod ile yalnızca vakalar takip edilmemekte ayrıca alışveriş yapılabilmekte, faturalar ödenebilmekte, kişilerin mevcut durumlarına atanan renkler (yeşil, sarı ya da kırmızı) doğrultusunda seyahat edip edemeyecekleri belirlenmektedir. Dahası, uygulama verileri yerel polisle de paylaşılmaktadır.2 Michel Foucault’nun Jeremy Bentham’dan devraldığı ve modern toplumdaki gözetimi kavramsallaştırdığı panopticon kavramı, bugün artık sağlıktan doğan mecburiyetlerin dijitalleşmeyle bir araya gelmesinin sonucunda, mobil pandemi uygulamalarıyla -en azından şimdilik- tarihsel olarak pratik anlamda doruk noktasına ulaşmıştır. Herkesin “gönüllüce” katıldığı bu süreç, Neil Postman’ın Televizyon Öldüren Eğlence kitabının önsözünde yorumladığı şekliyle, Orwell’in 1984 romanında tanımladığı değil Huxley’nin Cesur Yeni Dünya romanında genel hatlarını çizdiği bir gözetime bizleri götürmektedir. Başka bir deyişle, panopticon ile synopticon’un iç içe geçmesi söz konusudur. Bu çalışma, COVID-19 pandemisinin yarattığı iletişimsel ve yeni siyasal-kültürel ilişkiler yumağının gözetim toplumu olgusu bağlamında değerlendirilmesi amacını taşımaktadır. Çalışmada betimleyici (descriptive) yöntem kullanılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında; gözetim toplumuna dair literatürdeki temel kavramlar tanıtılmış ardından pandemi sürecinde dünyada kullanılan mobil uygulamaların çeşitli örnekler üzerinden gözetimle ilişkisi tartışılmış ve bu yönüyle pandeminin iletişimsel ekolojik dönüşümdeki etkileri makro bağlamıyla yorumlanmıştır.
