Full textUrbanization is increasing globally and with it, the use of cars. Cities are now faced with the problem that cars have a negative climate impact and reduce the quality of life for the inhabitants of the city. Therefore, the use of cars must decrease and sustainable mobility increase. The purpose of the study is to investigate how Malmö city works with sustainable mobility. Malmö is selected due to being ahead in the transition to more sustainable mobility in Sweden. A qualitative text analysis on four documents regarding sustainable mobility has been conducted. Malmö works in various ways to meet the challenges with sustainable transportation means for example cycling, walking and public transport. The sustainable means of transport must be prioritized through the city's design and behavior changes. The study has shown that Malmö works with social, economic and environmental sustainability, with more focus on the social aspects. The city prioritized the bicycle as the main means of transport, where accessibility and proximity should be leading. What is considered missing after the implementation of the study is focus on all neighborhoods and the climate aspect in relation to sustainable mobility.

Full textToday, many cities around the world face an increased urbanization, which means increased competition for public space. This also means increasing challenges for municipalities to develop and manage the physical environment in a long-term sustainable manner. The challenges include how cities can ensure efficient and sustainable transport systems, both in newly developed areas as well as in existing urban areas. Since land is a sparse and limited resource, it is interesting to explore challenges and opportunities in the work of reducing an unsustainable traffic situation in the built environment, in order to ensure a good accessibility for the city's inhabitants, while at the same time reducing the effects of an unsustainable traffic situation. This study is based on previous research that emphasizes a relationship between travel and built environment. The aim of this paper is to explore whether the political ambition of governing and policy documents on sustainable travel is realized in practice. Urban morphology has been used to explore how transformation processes are manifested in the physical environment, being that urban morphology examines physical form and processes of change that affect the city's design.Malmö city highlight it’s ambition of becoming a more green, attractive and sustainable city, where as sustainable travel has a prominent role in the realization of the ambition. In this study, however, a gap has been noted between the rhetoric level of sustainable travel and the realization of sustainable travel through transformation processes in built environment.

Full textSustainable traveling is an important part of sustainable development for cities and communities both today and in the future. Sustainable development are a goal both at national and local levels. This means a development where a transition for less car traffic and more sustainable traveling modes. To achieve a change in traveling modes actions can be made when planning for development of new dwellings to reduce car traffic in the stage of. This study examines the effect of the actions for sustainable transports by a study of the block Runstenen in Gävle. The block Runstenen was chosen for the study as the proposal was chosen in a competition for its sustainability among other factors. By looking at how planned actions such as car pool, parking and other factors influence the residents' travel habits, the results of the planning efforts can be studied. Interviews with five residents in the unit and questionnaires answered by 34 respondents give the residents a picture of how they look at their travels, what they have changed and what they want to change. The interest in changing their travel habits has proved to be different in different groups among residents. There are groups of residents who would like to change their travel to a more sustainable alternative and there are groups that do not see this as an alternative. It has proved to be important to plan actions in such a way that they can get implemented. Several of the measures planned in the Runstenen quarter have not been implemented. The study has been able to demonstrate strengths and weaknesses when planning with actions for sustainable travel. Nearby access to service is important for sustainable traveling. Factors such as nearby and easy access to garages prove to make an opposite effect and not contribute to the vision of sustainable travel with less car traffic. Especially in cases where bicycles become less accessible than the car because there is no protected bicycle parking. By studying an example from the implementation of a new construction project, residents' experiences have been made visible, which can be used for future new construction projects in central locations.

Full textThis essay discusses sustainable travel which is a common concept in connection with sustainable development. Two small municipalities have been studied in Östergötland, Sweden to assess what individuals and planners think about sustainable travel in their communities. The method used in this essay was to interview with citizens and planners in the municipalities Ödeshög and Boxholm. To analyse the data collection, we apply the theory social practice which focuses on the three elements: materials, competences, meanings. The results show a lack of accessibility in the municipalities, especially in public transport. Furthermore, the result shows that the citizens have a will towards changing their behaviour to transport in a more sustainable way. From the citizens perspectives there was a lack of competences and materials which prevented them from traveling in a more sustainable way. We also saw a will from the planners to change behaviour in their ambitions towards more sustainable travel options.

Full textMost people travel to work, school or run errands on a daily basis, but the way that we travel constitute an environmental impact that is not consistent with a long term sustainable development. In Sweden the transport sector accounts for about a quarter of the country’s energy use and about 30 percent of its total carbon emissions. A large share of the emissions is generated by passenger transport and researchers argue that reduced energy usage by smarter and more sustainable travel is important to reduce the transport sector’s environmental impact. Since work related travel accounts for half of all Swedish passenger transport, companies play a significant role, as they can affect both journeys to work and business travel. The purpose of the degree project is to investigate how a company and a workplace, ÅF in Solna, can create conditions for sustainable commuting and business travel. The aim is further to develop action proposals based on ÅF’s goal to reduce its carbon footprint. On the basis of conducted literature studies, which explain the background of companies’ efforts towards sustainable travel, describe Swedish work methods and discuss good examples of undertaken measures by Swedish organisations, a study of site conditions and a travel survey is carried out at ÅF in Solna. The results show that business travel accounts for 73 percent of the carbon emissions from travel and commuting for 27 percent. Nearly all international business travel is made by flight. Approximately 50 percent of national business travel is made by car, 25 percent by flight and 25 percent by train. Cars account for about 65 percent of local business travel and public transport for about 30 percent. At ÅF in Solna approximately 40 percent of commuting is made by car, 40 percent by public transport and 20 percent by walk, bike and other modes of travel, for a full year. The study shows that employees are interested in issues related to sustainable travel and ask for commitments in the field. The study concludes that ÅF in Solna can facilitate sustainable commuting and business travel by providing information on sustainable travel and the opportunities that already exists at the office. Further, ÅF can develop and improve existing conditions, for example by carrying out minor physical measures to revise shortcomings that may prevent changing travel habits. Additionally, ÅF in Solna can investigate the possibility of introducing incentives that facilitate sustainable travel habits and working with a travel plan.

Full textThe rail bonus is a term used in traffic planning which has no clear definition. The purpose of this paper has been to define the rail bonus by doing a concept analysis. This has been done by looking at previous research and previous investigations of light rail projects. We have also studied current light rail projects in Lund and Malmö through interviews with key persons. The purpose of the interviews has been to get a better view on how the term is used today and to compare this with our definition. Our results have shown that a number of factors are the core of the concept of the rail bonus. The rail bonus is the growth in travel that occurs when new tramway replaces buses. One condition is that there is a good planning and a sound strategy, and that soft factors are taken into consideration. This leads to reliability for the tram, and traveling with the tram will increase. To easier prove the rail bonus the journey needs to be at least 40 minutes. Our concept testing has indicated that the interviewees identify some of these factors without seeing them in a bigger perspective.

Full textThis work including a proposal with sustainable guidelines on how to plan a commuter node, as well as identification of general service functions that should be available. The work is based on the increasing use of cars against choice of sustainable transport in the form of pedestrian, bicycle and public transport. An important part of the planning of the commuter hubs is the attractiveness of the city center as well as the interconnection between countryside and urban areas. If the cars accessibility is limited, sustainable travel can benefit and thus better link Sweden’s road network with better connections. This proposal will make urban and traffic planning easier. The study is based on what other cities have done in the past to encourage sustainable travel, use of proven analytical methods and interviews with expert and potential users. The result shows that by placing commuter nodes on the edge of Växjö, car use is reduced in the center and instead promotes human health and well-being. The commuter nodes are also a prerequisite for all people to have the opportunity to access leisure activities, work and studies wherever they live. At the same time, large areas in the center are released, which can be designed into green areas that encourage a more vibrant city and physical activity for people living in it. A commuter node's attraction increases as it can offer. Being able to offer a range of functions, services and experiences is a connection between public transport and land value.

Full textThere are different approaches for authorities to use in the work to influence people’s choice of transport and to get the public to choose more environmentally-friendly alternatives than the car. The study has investigated what kind of methods current actors in Malmö are using, where a distinction is made between hard and soft measures. The basis for the study has been to provide insight into and understanding the ongoing work and what measures are considered to have the greatest effect through four semi-structured in-depth interviews with respondents from current actors in Malmö. The result shows that they work extensively with a combination of both methods within the city of Malmö, primarily through Mobility Management, a concept developed internationally as an alternative to a more traditional traffic planning. The work with the soft measures has increased and the acceptance of the same permeates through the organizations more clearly than previously according to the respondents, although the hard equivalents are still considered to be the foundation and most effective.

Full textThe challenge of attaining sustainable travel on holidays has several dimensions. Technical and organizational challenges are found at the system level, and at an individual level we have to deal with psychological barriers. But there is one more challenge, which may be found at a societal level. It is about how sociocultural structures and actors in society can shape identity, lifestyle and norms of individuals. In this paper, the emphasis is laid on the latter, focusing on media. Media in the form of texts and pictures about travel can work as inspiration for many tourists, and contribute to the build-up of more or less eco-friendly lifestyles and consumer behaviors. By using content analysis of four Swedish magazines and a web survey addressed youths 18-30 years old, the following research questions are being answered: “How are texts and pictures about (un)sustainable travel described in travel- and lifestyle magazines, respectively? What potential has media in form of magazines to have an influence on young travellers’ knowledge, attitudes and habits about (un)sustainable travel on holidays?” The analysis shows that many texts deal with aspects like lifestyle and mobility, means of transport and environmental impact, and future technological development. These are often depicted in a way which arguable not is promoting a sustainable holiday travel. Texts about sustainable tourism and alternative ways of travelling are rare, and the survey confirms that many youths have lack of knowledge in these topics. Nevertheless, an important finding is that a majority of the respondents have positive attitudes about environment, sustainable tourism and alternative ways of travelling, and ask for more information and inspiration about it. Consequently, there are indicators that a positive trend towards sustainability may be on the way among young travellers. The study also indicates that media in form of magazines, is not frequently used by young travellers as a primary source of inspiration. Notwithstanding, the results of this paper are considered to be relevant, and may, together with future research, give valuable insights to how media can have an affect on, and contribute to, the attitudes and behavior of travellers with the aim of reach a more sustainable travel.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to investigate how mobility management can be applied to reduce climate impact from municipal business travel. A qualitative case study was conducted in the municipality of Trelleborg and data was collected from key personnel in the organization and through semi-structured interviews with employees. Interview data was analyzed using content analysis. The results were then used to develop a tailored action plan adapted to fit the municipality’s conditions and needs. The study showed that there is good potential to further develop the already advancing climate undertakings in Trelleborg municipality, using a combination of soft measures such as coordination, communication, education and site-based efforts. One conclusion of the study is that employee experience is a valuable resource that can be used as a compass when selecting actions related to sustainable business travel and travel-free meetings.

Full textOur society tends to go more and more mobile while people tend to move over a greater area of land at a shorter time than ever before. Still economic investments in transport-systems tends to be located where they will have the greatest economic increase for society which are cities and bigger communities with a high number of travelers. This results in areas with lower number of travelers ends up outside of the development towards the mobile and sustainable society. Rural areas which have longer distance to social service and lack of alternative travel options creates a dependency for the private owned car. This essay seeks to highlight problems with mobility and accessibility in rural areas. Through surveys and interviews in the rural area Arrie, we have gathered empirical material and analyzed it for the purpose of linking it to theories and concepts. We have come to the conclusion that even if economic investments is made on nodes in the public-transport and paths for walking and biking in rural areas, the car is still inevitable. Which is also one of the motivators for Region Skåne and Skånetrafiken for combined transport for sustainable travel.

Full textIn Sweden according to the planning and building Act municipalities have planning monopoly. The question about shopping centres in the outskirts of cities is a regional issue, because they attract customers from a large area. Municipalities often find it hard to assert themselves against large commercial companies when it comes to their establishing new retail outlets on the outskirts of cities. Without a regional co-operation there is a risk that municipalities can be played up against one another, so that more and more companies are given permits without the municipalities having taken the strategic consideration necessary for a long term sustainable development. The focus in this work is on four municipalities in the Södertörn region (Södertälje, Botkyrka, Huddinge and Nynäshamn). Today there are some out-of-town retail outlets in the first three municipalities. The main aim of this thesis is to explain why there is no co-operation between municipalities in Södertörn concerning out-of-town retailing. The aim is also to connect sustainable city development with the problems of out-of-town retails as well as the municipalities commercial policy. The study uses a hermeneutic approach and a qualitative method with one case-study. The interviews are partly based on standard procedures.
Out-of-town retail outlets entail private car use and this is a problem from a city development perspective. To reach a sustainable city development it is important to expand transport options such as walking, biking and public transport. The project Sustainable Travel (Hållbart resande) at Södertörn supports this development. Some of the municipalities in Södertörn are trying to revitalise their local centres and this is positive from a social and ecological perspective. The four municipalities however do not co-operate concerning out-of-town retailing, and this reverts the issue back to a lack of regional planning, and their competing for purchasing power.

Full textDemands for sustainable mobility have become an increasingly important issue for local actors. Through city and traffic planning, the current unsustainable transport systems are going to become more sustainable. However, how to define sustainable mobility is disputed. Therefore, how planners in the Swedish municipality of Helsingborg define sustainable mobility makes an interesting case. This thesis examines how planners imagine sustainable mobility, who the sustainable traveler is, and what a sustainable city might look like. Theoretically the thesis combines an intersectional framework with a feminist planning theory and theories from Science and Technology Studies. The empirical material is based on in-depth interviews with sixteen planners, a focus group interview, and visual analyses of the planning documents the city of Helsingborg uses in planning for sustainable mobility. The analyses show that planners do not see the negative environmental impact of traveling as an argument which will persuade people to travel more sustainably. Instead, it is the possibility to construct sustainable mobility as fun, healthy, pleasurable, and practical that planners believe will persuade the inhabitants of Helsingborg to cycle or travel by bus more often. But not all travelers are likely to benefit from the positive values of sustainable mobility. To conclude, when planners imagine sustainable mobility, they imagine that it is good to travel the correct way for environmental reasons, but it is even greater to make independent travel choices, based on what modes of transport attract the most people.

Full textJust like adults, children travel regularly in their everyday life. A major part of children’s travels goes to school, but apart from that children also do leisure travels to club activities and leisure facilities. The everyday travel habits of children affect both their health and independence. For this reason, this thesis will embrace children’s mobility and sustainable everyday travels. The aim is to raise the different travel types of children as well as present a basis for continued work within the topic. The study contains of literature research and questionnaires. One of the surveys was made in collaboration with Järfälla municipality. The two questionnaires, one for the students and one for their parents, investigated the travels habits to school and leisure activities for children in Skälbyskolan. Another questionnaire was sent to municipalities in the network of ResSmart. This survey collected information about if and how the municipalities work with children’s school travels and leisure travels, including also the reason why in some cases nothing was done. The result of the surveys showed that walking and cycling are the most common ways of transport to school. Most of the travels was done alone or with other children. Considering the use of bicycle, the use is dependent on the time of the year, where a large proportion cycle in summer but few in winter. To leisure activities, a great majority of the travels are made by car. Because of this, the independence of children’s leisure travel is generally non-existing. The reason why parents drive their children to leisure activities mainly depends on the distance, but also the time of the day in relation to darkness and the general family life. When driving children to school, the main reasons are lack of time and continued travels by car. When comparing Skälbyskolan with Gustav Vasa skola in the downtown of Stockholm, the result showed that walking is to most popular way of travel for both schools. However, neither cycling nor driving was made regularly to Gustav Vasa skola, even if the reasons when actually driving was the same as in Skälbyskolan. Regarding the municipality planning and actions, it is more common that municipalities work with sustainable school travels than children’s leisure travels. Furthermore, the working methods differ, where only physical arrangements are made within leisure travel routes and the lack of mobility management is a fact. With basis in the literature and survey results, action proposals are presented for a developed work within the area. For school travels, the actions should focus on reaching the parents and affecting their choice of mode, as well as actions for easier and more comfortable cycling during winter season. Considering leisure travels is the proposal to copy actions from the work with school travels, where the work should start off with inventions and travel habits surveys in leisure clubs. Furthermore, mobility management actions should be introduced, but also complex and long-term actions including leisure buses for children as well as compact city planning. Finally, the study mean that further work and surveys are needed for continued and developed work with children’s mobility. The area of children’s leisure travels should be raised both in planning documents and information, but also is media and larger forums.

Full textThis report discusses the challenges that exists today with free-floating electric scooter systems in traffic. The essay is based on comparing the City of Gothenburg, Linköping Municipality and Norrköping Municipality´s work with electric scooters in relation to the theoretical frame; shared mobility, micromobility and smart mobility and sustainable transport. A further point also lies in pointing out similarities and differences between the municipalities work and examining the potenital of the electric scooter in the development of the cities´ future transport systems. The essay´s empirical data is based on interview studies with five employees, as well as a document analysis of relevant policy documents in the subject. The results show that the main challenges for the municipalities lie in vague legislation, congestion, inclusion of different districts, incorrect parking and illegal driving. In relation to this, measures such as agreements between the municipalities and the rental companies has been drawn up. Furthermore, the results show an interest on the part of the municipalities to benifit from the electric scooter in the development of sustainable and shared transports in the future. In connection with this, the analysis show that an important part in enabling this development, among other things, lies in integrating the electric scooter with other modes of traffic and providing relevant information to users.

Full texthe tourism industry is ranked as one of the world's biggest and fastest growing industries, which in return contribute to big environmental consequences. More environmentally friendly, railway bound transportation are current research questions and are discussed to prevent the negative effects of tourism. The purpose of the study was to research adolescents interest and attitude towards train for touristic purposes and if their perceived environmental awareness affected their choice of travel. Interrail was chosen as a research object partly because the authors considered it a current topic and partly because of the investment that the EU-commission made to be able to give 18-year olds free Interrailpasses this year. Interrail was in accordance with the theory perceived to be a more environmentally friendly choice of transportation and form of tourism. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used to answer the purpose and questions of the study. From the chosen theories there appears to be a gap between tourists attitudes and behaviour, where personal values and the environmental norm that existed at home, was disregarded when choosing to go on a trip. The results from the 7 personal interviews and the questionnaire shows that the interest for train as transport for touristic purposes is relatively low, which could give an explanation for the lacking interest for Interrail in today's adolescents. Even among companies Interrail is interpreted as having a low position on the market. Companies aren't interested in marketing Interrail due to its low perceived economic profit. The interest for Interrail is low where aspects such as time, price and experience weighs heavier for adolescent’s touristic choices, where the environmental benefits are merely seen as a positive bi-product. From a lack of knowledge and preconceptions the authors interpret Interrails comeback, despite the financial investments from the EU-commission, as hard to achieve.

Full textThe growing concern for the textile industries’ impact on the environment is challenging companies to constantly adapt and improve their ways of conducting business. As companies face challenges to improve their everyday-business and long-term impact of sustainability, the implementation of second-hand as a business subsidiary has seen a rapid increase in growth in recent years. As changes in customer and stakeholder demands have shifted towards a more sustainable practice, companies are being forced to take on new ways to create value and be competitive. With practices shifting and the overall consumption rising, companies have started to collect and resell their used garments paving way for a new business model that creates new revenue streams and advocates for circularity within the company. The aim with this study has been to define what procedures companies have used to implement resale into their operations. This has also raised questions regarding what challenges the companies face with the process and what new values it brings to the company. To find these answers, interviews with three clothing brands, currently working with resale, have been conducted. The results show that integration of resell in the focal companies has generated values for themselves, loyal customers and new customers. Instances of these values are connected to new income streams, acquisition of new customers and improvement of both Brand- and Green Brand Equity. Different approaches have been embodied in the study, where values and attitudes towards sustainability have been factors that have had significant impacts on the design. The size of the company and the time at the market have also shown influence. Challenges have been found in meeting the demand with the supply and balancing quality versus quantity. As some companies in the study see their actions as a duty towards the environment, others see it more as a service towards their customers. What new values the concept creates, depends upon the core values of the company. Furthermore, this study will be written in Swedish.
