Abstract:

Abstract:
The melon crop is normally developed in semiarid regions, where water resources are limited. This scarcity of water is a strong stressor on the crops, and requires the supplementation of existing water supplies with poor quality water, especially saline water. This can impede the growth and production of plants; however, the use of tolerant genotypes may minimize this problem. Thus, a greenhouse experiment was developed at the Federal University of Campina Grande - UFCG, Pombal Campus, Paraiba State, Brazil, in order to study the emergence, initial growth, and tolerance of melon cultivars irrigated with waters of different salt content. We studied three melon cultivars (Gaúcho Redondo, Gaúcho Casca de Carvalho and Halles Best Jumbo) irrigated with five levels of saline water (0.6; 1.2; 1.8; 2.4; and 3.0 dS m-1), arranged in a 3 x 5 factorial scheme, with the treatments distributed in a randomized block design with four replications. The plants seeds were monitored for 30 days after sowing, and at 30 days the growth and salinity tolerance index was evaluated. Cultivar Halles Best Jumbo was the most tolerant to saline water during initial stage of growth, while the Gaucho Redondo was more sensitive to salinity. It was found that saline waters up to 1.8 dS m-1 were suitable for irrigation of melon plants round Gaucho and waters up to 2.4 dS m-1 could be used for irrigation of Gaucho Casca de Carvalho and Halles Best Jumbo crops during the initial growth phase.

Abstract Strawberries, the single species in the orchards which appropriate in the same time at common culture in the field and in protected culture, is of great importance on the line of profitability.. We can expect that in the next years the requirements for strawberries fresh and preserved, fruit with an exceptional taste, will double or even triple. For this reason, I noticed the strawberry culture in the field, at three varieties (Surprise des Halles, Red Gauntlet, Senga Sengana), into an favorable ecosystem for studied species and in various crop systems advantageous from economically point of view. The objectives of the paper are to capitalize and promote the strawberry culture in the area where the observations were made, the south of Teleorman County.

Abstract:
Highly appreciated concert halls have their own acoustic signature. These signatures may not often be consciously appraised by general audiences, but they have a significant impact on the appreciation of the hall. Previous research indicates that two of the most important defining elements of a hall’s acoustic signature are (i) the reflection sequence and relative reflection levels at the listener position and (ii) the perceptibility of the reflections based on perception thresholds. Early research from Sir Harold Marshall identified the importance of unmasked early reflections to enhance a concert hall’s acoustic signature. The authors see an opportunity to extend the existing research by further examining the sequence of unmasked reflections. By analysing the cross-sections of three concert halls, this manuscript quantifies potential links between a hall’s architectural form, the resultant skeletal reflections, and the properties of its acoustic signature. While doing so, the manuscript identifies potential masking reflections through visual and analytical assessment of a hall’s skeletal reflections. It is hypothesized that the “rhythm” of the reflection sequence could hold key insights into the hall’s “personality” and acoustic signature. If so, this could present new design tools and considerations for new concert halls and the diagnosis of underperformance in existing halls.

Abstract:
Abstract This annotated English translation of an article written by Eugène Briffault one year after the 1830 July Revolution presents a unique testimony of a city in a state of post-revolutionary transition. Drawn with the pen of a realist novelist and observed with the eye of a practised reporter, ‘The Paris Night’ takes the reader on a journey through the streets of a city seemingly under martial law, from the haunts of journalists, into the vice-dens of the Palais-Royal, past the hectic activity of Les Halles and into streets still bearing the scars of the recent Revolution. Along with the ubiquitous military patrols, the author encounters streetwalkers, ragpickers and other denizens of the night until he reaches the Chaillot Heights to contemplate a ‘revolution escamotée’, a popular revolt which had been ‘smuggled away’. Along with a brief biography of Briffault, J. Weintraub’s introduction places the essay in the context of its time.

Abstract:
Abstract Most studies of socio-economic rights in the French Revolution have focused on how officials and other deliverers of aid struggled to redefine assistance, rather than on how recipients themselves contributed to the idea. In contrast, this article centres on poor Parisian market women called the Dames des Halles to bring to light the voices, discourses, and actions of individuals demanding rights and assistance. The Dames had relied on charity and privilege to conduct their commerce during the Old Regime, but the Revolution upended their advantages. Balancing discourses of humanity and utility, the Dames sought to recalibrate their place in the body politic in order to maintain occupational exemptions, favourable commercial positions, and exceptional access to public space. Their battles reveal how everyday citizens and the National Assembly first struggled to reinterpret socio-economic assistance as corrupt privilege, as the state’s civic duty, or as exemptions earned by poor working citizens.
