Human hand transplantation became a medical reality at the turn of the 2 1st century. Often hailed by media and the general public as miraculous, these life-changing surgeries are also highly controversial. Many doctors, ethicists, and medical professionals feel the benefits of having a hand transplant do not outweigh the risks of the immunosuppressive drugs required to keep the complex foreign tissues alive on the bodies of chronically disabled yet otherwise healthy people. Patients' reactions to having the operation, to the drugs, to the physical therapy, and to the psychological consequences of wearing the hand of a dead person range from grateful acceptance to disgust and requested reamputation. This thesis explores the struggles and triumphs of human hand transplants through the stories of several patients and doctors. The rise of hand transplantation as a field, including the ongoing controversy surrounding the first successful human hand transplant, is also related as insight into how doctors and patients in innovative medicine make decisions, and where hand transplantation stands as a technology to benefit both medicine and scientific research.

Full textHalloween is a foreign cultural manifestation that is taking place in Brazil, mainly in schools and in business. Initially introduced by English schools and little by little it is popularizing itself in the country. Today, not only the schools commemorate the date. The commemorations are carnivalization and for carnivalization we understand as a deviation of the cultural manifestation on the cultural fact, accordingly to the concept theorized by Bakhtin. Another important concept for this research is the multiculturalism and its relation with education. The goal of this paper is to analyze these concepts and its applicability to the reality manifested in a school atmosphere. The research makes use of this problem and sees how this carnivalization of the commemorations occurs according to the teachers' and students perceptions in a community typically paulistana and presents the hypothesis that these celebrations start with elements peculiar to the national culture and with the process of carnivalization of other cultures. For that reason we deal with carnivalization and multiculturalism concepts related with the education specifically in schools with a juvenile public.

Full textCemeteries of the enslaved on many plantations in the 18th and 19th centuries were places where communities could practice forms of resistance, and develop distinct African-American traditions. These spaces often went unrecorded by elites, whose constructed landscapes were designed to convey messages of their own status and authority. In their oversight of these spaces, however, elites failed to notice the nuanced meanings the slaves themselves instilled in the landscapes they were forced to live and work in. These separate meanings enabled enslaved African Americans to maintain both human and cultural identities that subverted the slave system and the messages of inferiority that constantly bombarded them.
This thesis focuses on the archaeological study of the Slave Cemetery at George Washington's Mount Vernon. Here, methodological and theoretical principles are utilized to study the area that many enslaved workers call their final resting place. Through the use of this space, it is hypothesized that Mount Vernon's enslaved community practiced distinct traditions, instilling in that spot a sense of place, and reinforcing their individual and communal human identities. This thesis will also investigate the cemetery within its broader regional and cultural contexts, to attain a better understanding of the death rituals and culturally resistant activates that slaves at Mount Vernon used in their day-to-day battle against the system that held them in bondage.

Having weakened for some samples, but persisted for others, calendar effects are still a relevant challenge to market efficiency. Their decline for some markets suggests that the inefficiencies responsible for the presence of calendar effects should disappear with improvements in financial development. This research aims to help fill a gap in the existing literature, by clearly drawing a relationship between the presence of calendar effects and financial development. The goal is to clarify whether calendar effects can be partly explained by a lack of financial development. In this work, we investigate weekly and monthly calendar effects in 46 international stock markets, for a 25 years-period, and relate our findings to their degree of financial development. The evidence suggests that some calendar anomalies - the Friday and January effects - clearly decrease with financial development, while others - the Monday, April, and Halloween effects - are statistically significant, regardless of it. We build three alternative aggregate measures for the presence and severity of calendar effects in markets, and find that less financially developed countries have more calendar anomalies, not only in number, but in intensity as well.

Abstract: This dissertation aims at analyzing female representations in two film productions of the North American horror cinema, specifically of its subgenre slasher films, namely Halloween, directed by John Carpenter (1978) and The Silence of the Lambs, directed by Jonathan Demme (1991). My main theoretical framework is film, representation, gender, feminist and queer theories (Butler, 1990, 1993; Clover, 1989; Dika, 1985, Halberstam, 1995; Hall 1973, 1997; Mulvey, 1975, 1981; 2006; Rockoff, 2006; Weedon, 1995). My hypothesis is that the figure of the final girl, in the two films selected for analysis, is not progressive as suggested by the author Carol Clover in her work Men, Women and Chainsaws (1989). On the contrary, the two female characters are represented, in the narrative, as subjugated by the patriarchal system that has been conventionalized in the slasher subgenre. In order to provide arguments for my hypothesis, I analyze general aspects of both form and content of the two films, as well as specific scenes, using the cinematic elements of mise-en-scène, props, characterization, editing and lighting in order to obtain relevant results for my research.

They presented sample evidence that in a number of countries, returns have been unusually larger during the months of November to April than those during the months of May to October. Following closely the methodology used by Bouman and Jacobsen (2002), we propose to examine the existence of the Halloween effect in Europe from October 1992 to October 2010 and to provide some insight on the possible explanations for the anomaly. We concluded that the Halloween effect is economically and statistically significant, constituting therefore an exploitable opportunity. We have considered several possible explanations for the anomaly, but none was able to completely justify the seasonal effect. We suggest, that a possible explanation for the anomaly may be related with the negative average returns during the May–October period, rather than with a superior performance during the November–April period.

Bouman and Jacobsen (2002) documented the existence of a calendar anomaly in stock market returns, which they call the Halloween effect. In this dissertation we follow closely the methodology used by Bouman and Jacobsen (2002), to study the presence of the Halloween effect in European Equity Mutual Funds, from 1997 to 2013. We provide evidences of the presence of this effect in the European Equity Mutual Funds market, we test whether this effect has disappeared after the Bouman and Jacobsen publication in 2002 and we show that an investment strategy based on this anomaly can beat the market. We conclude that the Halloween Effect is statistically and economically significant, and that this anomaly in the stock market returns might be due to the negative average returns during the months of May to October, rather than a higher performance during the period from November to April.

For the reject or the confirmation of this affair, in the present study, we check the existence of calendar anomalies in the output of 15 International Stock Exchange markets the last 20 years. The examined period (1988-2008) is separated in two subperiods taking into consideration the international crisis that began in the dues of 1999 in order to be checked the stability of results. The empirical results show important differentiation of results in the two examined subperiods. In any case, the segregation of indicators according to their places in the world market does not appear to attribute substantially conclusions. Specifically in the case of emerging markets, these show that they mark an autonomous movement and to be influenced more by other (internal, mainly) factors.

Abstract The ROCSAT-1 satellite was launched into a circular orbit with inclination of 35 degrees. Its orbits can cover magnetic latitudes (Mlat) up to 45 degrees in some longitude sectors. During storm time the mid-latitude and high-latitude phenomena can expand equatorward, so it is possible for us to observe mid-latitude phenomena at ROCSAT-1 orbits. During the great magnetic storm on 29 – 31 October 2003 (Halloween storm), the onboard Ionospheric Plasma and Electrodynamics Instrument (IPEI) observed unusually rapid plasma drifts in the sub-auroal latitudes. These westward drifts were driven by polarward electric fields. We characterize these westward flows as the Subauroral Polarization Stream (SAPS). In this thesis we investigate the equatorward extent of the SAPS events and discuss the structures of the intermediate scale (500 m ~ 60 km) wave phenomena. In particular, we focus on three SAPS events during the expansion phase of this storm period. From these events we find that the average westward velocity is 600 m/s ~ 800 m/s and that the maximum velocity exceeds 1200 m/s. Surrounding this velocity peak is a narrow latitude region, which is named “Subauroral Ion Drift (SAID)”. The lowest SAPS equatorward boundary extended to 26o Mlat, and local time extended toward mid-afternoon (15:30 LT). In addition to polarward electric field, we also observed eastward electric fields. Furthermore, we analyze the spectral and polarization characteristics of the wave events. At the location nearby the SAID event, we observed the narrow-band waves, which are left-hand polarized with wavelengths around 3.16 km.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the application of Interactive Whiteboard on Halloween English teaching in preschool. There were three main purposes, first, to know how Halloween English teaching promoted preschool students’ cognition of Halloween’s culture background by Interactive Whiteboard. Second, how Halloween English teaching enhanced preschool students’ Halloween vocabulary learning effects on listening and speaking by Interactive Whiteboard. Finally, how Halloween English teaching increased preschool students’ learning motivation of Halloween by Interactive Whiteboard. Moreover, the children’s responses during Interactive Whiteboard English teaching were observed and described. Twenty four preschool children participated in this study. They are aged four to five in Tainan preschool. The experiment estimated to take 8 weeks. Students usually attend English class three times each week, 30 minutes per class. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were adopted in this study, including pre/post tests, observation and survey. The findings and results are summarized as follow: 1.The result of Halloween English teaching promoted students’ cognition of Halloween’s culture background by Interactive Whiteboard was 52.08%. 2.According to the result, Halloween English teaching enhanced preschool students’ Halloween vocabulary learning and speaking. The average of preschool students’ listening test increased 69.17%. On the other hand, the average of speaking test improved 90.42%. There is a significant difference on speaking of Halloween vocabulary. 3.Through motivation interview survey, twenty-three students all love this teaching, there is only one student does not like Halloween activities. From open ended question of the survey, he pointed out that he did not like to put on Halloween costume and Halloween parade. Therefore, all his answers to the questions were negative. But from his parent’s survey, and classroom observation, he had a positive reaction on Interactive Whiteboard English teaching. The researcher found that students have a positive response to Interactive Whiteboard English teaching. 4.Students’ responses to Interactive Whiteboard English teaching were excited. It is easy to catch their attention and extend concentration on learning. According to the result, there is a significant difference on Halloween English teaching by Interactive Whiteboard in preschool. I hope I can provide a multiple teaching method for English teachers on festival teaching. Keywords: Interactive Whiteboard.(I.W.B.), Learning Motivation, Culture Teaching

Full textIn an efficient market, information is reflected on market prices, and consequently prices should follow a random walk, and their changes should be unpredictable (Fama, 1965a). The aim of this research is to test the efficient market hypothesis. In particular, this dissertation investigates the weak-form market efficient hypothesis through analyzing the existence of the ”Sell in May and Go Away” calendar anomaly (also known as the Halloween Effect). The data set consists of monthly stock returns for value-weighted indices of 25 international countries. We follow a regression analysis methodology to: test for the existence of the Halloween effect in both developed and emerging markets, test if the Halloween effect is a January effect in disguise, and test if crashes affects the results. The results show that the Sell in May effect exists in 9 countries out of the studied 25 countries, and that the Sell in May effect is not simply a January effect.
