Abstract:
Atomically flat colloidal semiconductor CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) with precisely controlled thickness possess a range of unique optoelectronic properties. Here, we study the growth of CdSe, CdTe, and CdS NPLs with the aim of synthesizing thicker NPLs in order to extend their optical activity further into the lower energy/larger wavelength range. We employ cadmium halides, which lead to faster reaction kinetics as confirmed by control experiments with cadmium hydroxide as a Cd-precursor. Addition of halides in all cases led to the formation of thicker NPL species, as compared with the correspon

Heavy metals have been known to possess antimicrobial properties against bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. Silver and copper in particular have been used for millennia to control bacterial and fungal contamination. Metal nanoparticles (aggregations of metal atoms 1-200 nm in size) have recently become the subject of intensive study for their increased antimicrobial properties due to their increased surface area and localized release of metal ions when attached to pathogens. In the current studies, metal and metalhalide nanoparticles including silver (Ag), silver bromide (AgBr), silver io

The results of a systematic 35Cl, 81Br, and 127I SSNMR spectroscopic study of a series of halogen-substituted anilinium halide salts are presented. Solid-state NMR of these nuclides, bromine-/81 and iodine-127 in particular, is not well established. Twenty-one compounds thought to exhibit halogen bonding were prepared based on modified literature procedures, and two crystal structures were solved. Experiments show that collection of SSNMR spectra of the anions is feasible, though ultrahigh magnetic fields (21.1 T) and variable offset data acquisition were found to be essential. Electric fi

Halogen chemistry in the polar boundary layer has received much scientific attention in recent years due to the observations of high concentrations of reactive halogens in springtime. The source of reactive halogens and the site for halogen activation remain a subject of debate. In this thesis, chloride, bromide and sodium ions across the snow-sea ice-seawater interface were measured to study the cryospheric halide distribution and halogen activation in the Arctic. The results show halides/Na+ molar ratios (Br−/Na+ and Cl−/Na+ ratios) in snow are commonly higher than that in seawater, suggesti
