Abstract:
Health promotion is regarded as the cornerstone of good health. It is the action expected from individuals and families in order to better their own health situation. Health promotion is an art and science (Edelman & Mandle, 2002:16) that is integrated into the primary health care to reduce existing health problems. The purpose of the research on which this article is reporting, was to explore and describe the health promotion needs of families with adolescents orphaned by human immunodeficiency virus or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The research was located within a qualitative paradigm that is both exploratory and descriptive. Eight families who were purposely selected participated in the research process. Qualitative methods, such as group interviews and field notes were utilised to collect data. The health promotion needs of the families with adolescents orphaned by HIV/AIDS were explored and described. Tesch’s analysis process, which entails a series of steps, was followed (Creswell, 2003:192). Themes, categories and subcategories that form the central focus of health promotion needs emerged during the data analysis. These themes, categories and subcategories are used to develop guidelines for health promotion.

AbstractIn this plenary presentation from the Tenth IAMS Conference in Hammanskraal, South Africa, IAMS (then) vice-president Paulo Suess speaks about the importance of gratuitousness, proximity and universality in developing a Latin American missiology that is not just for the poor and indigenous, but with them as well. As he puts it: "From any point of the world we may access the network of gratuitousness and sharing, that questions accumulation, to the network of proximity, that challenges indifference and exclusion, and to the network of universality, that contests restrictive globalization. To transform the world of exclusion and poverty, and to incorporate the option for the protagonism of the poor in Christian communities and in society, the paschal experience--the experience of Jesus Christ crucified and living in the poor--lends wings to our imagination and sandals to the reasons of our hope."

Abstract:
The paper investigates the linguistic challenges faced by Setswana-speaking Grade 7 learners when writing Science examinations in English. In South African schools, non-mother tongue speakers of English learners are only introduced to English as a language of learning and teaching in Grade 4, which creates problems for these learners because English is foreign to them. The purpose of conducting this research was to help policymakers meet the linguistic needs of non-native English speakers, make curriculum development specialists aware of the linguistic challenges faced by non-native speakers of English and help readers gain a better understanding of why some teachers prefer to use indigenous languages when they teach in English. The participants comprised four purposively selected Grade 7 Natural Science teachers, two school governing bodies (SGBs) and Grade 7 learners from two primary schools in Hammanskraal, Gauteng. Data gathered indicated that Setswana-speaking learners made basic errors related to spelling, sentence construction, grammar, incomplete sentences, mixed languages, using words that do not exist, tenses and understanding instructions. As a result, SGBs should consider these linguistic challenges when they draft language policies for rural and township schools.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to illuminate beliefs in relation to health and illness expressed by older Africans within the context of a society in transition – South Africa. An ethnographic research approach influenced by the interpretive phenomenological tradition was selected to gain an understanding of the participants’ experiences. A focused ethnographic design was employed, using group and individual in-depth interviews and participant observations. Sixteen elderly persons (ten females and six males) from Hammanskraal, a rural area north of Pretoria were involved in the research. The findings illuminate a world understanding, where body and mind are inseparable and relationships provide the foundation for improving and maintaining health and being cured from illness. The ongoing transition that the elderly in South Africa experience influences health and illness beliefs, with a need to adapt to existing parallel health care systems, Western biomedicine and African traditional medicine. As the study draws attention to the importance of caring for the elderly to be contextualised, it is recommended that the care of the elderly be applied to the unique needs of the individual involved. Failure to do so may otherwise have severe consequences such as an apparent high risk of developing stereotypes, which can lead to cultural misunderstandings, prejudice and discrimination.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article originally delivered as a keynote address at the IAMS Tenth International Conference in Hammanskraal, South Africa, is a passionate call to attend to the atrocities being committed against Tamils in the "broken world" of contemporary Sri Lanka. As the author puts it: "Disbelief and forgetfulness are the weapons of those who are opposed to humanity therefore to God. Forgetfulness is the antidote to truth and truthfulness of memory. Looking at this indescribable suffering of the innocent I have often felt that we all live in a world that has become unresponsive to the cries of the poor and under privileged. Such an attitude calls for solidarity among the victims and the oppressed. We also live in a world where a common agenda seems to unite all those who have chosen to be the enemies of humanity. It is our duty to fight this mute silence of the world with the power of the WORD. We should allow the word of Truth about the poor and innocent about voiceless women, men and children, to seek refuge and self-exile. Let us speak this word to the powers that be. All that we carry with us now is the memory of our life and that of the death of our fellow Tamils."

Van, Huyssteen Elsona. "Borders, boundaries and barriers : a narrative on Hammanskraal / Temba." Diss., University of Pretoria, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/33038.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional historiographic research is challenged by the very nature of post-modernism which, in terms of one of its less radical viewpoints, views history not so much as truth-seeking, nor objective activity, but rather re-interpreting it as story-telling and as history reflective of itself -an approach which have determined the nature and style of this study. The study was prompted firstly by my exposure to the legacy of apartheid with regards to land and past planning policies while working at the Department of Land Affairs, and secondly by my personal involvement in Hammanskraai/Temba. The latter straddles the border of a former homeland, formed part of the previous governments' border industry programme, suffers tenure problems on land-ownership issues and is bisected by two present provincial boundaries. For a long time to come Hammanskraai/Temba will struggle to overcome results of modernistic grand apartheid policies as reflected in gross inequalities, uncertainty and the like. The aim of this study was therefore to form an understanding of the grand generalising and local narratives regarding borders, boundaries and barriers in the Hammanskraai/Temba area, as well as the influence of the discourses of development intent on the area and its people. In order to address the issues it was necessary to deconstruct the discourses in development intent that affected the Hammanskraai/Temba area, and to tell the respective role players' stories of the shaping of borders, boundaries and barriers in the area, as well as to play off the various discourses in grand, local and expressive narratives, as it is still unfolding. Instead of giving an 'all encompassing truth' or deliberately simplifying the 'story' in order to fit into a logical, chronological structure (arguing 'modernisticly', so that the reader cannot do otherwise than to agree with the argument), I rather opted towards telling some of the stories reflecting on various experiences regarding borders, boundaries and barriers in the area. There are stories of artificial boundaries, of racists and capitalists, of land and tenure, of division, separation, independence and later integration, of reserves and their underdevelopment, of people suffering and struggling, and of unviable towns and demarcations. In these stories the immense influence and effect of policies and development intent on peoples lives, as well as on the physical, social and economical environment, are illustrated. However, the stories illustrate that not only were complicated barriers created, but also how in some cases, they were perpetuated and enhanced. The value of this historical narrative, lies in the way it makes sense of events, actions and experiences, bringing forward stories that 'deserve to be told', thus opening up a new way of looking at planning and planning history. It illustrates the complexity and intriguing relationships and problems of an area influenced by a magnitude of modernistic planning policies and actions, casting a glimpse on the effect of borders, boundaries and barriers on the lives of those who have to live with it, cross it, or in the worst instances, struggle against it - somehow always with a glimmer of hope.

Mahlangu, Sonto Hleziphi. "The aftercare needs of nyaope users in the Hammanskraal community." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60381.

Full text
Abstract:
The trend of new drugs entering the drug market has intensified in South Africa. Currently in South Africa, there is a fairly new drug on the market known as nyaope which is being abused mostly by the youth in the townships. Nyaope is a drug consisting of heroin, dagga and other elements like rat poison, cleaning detergents and even crushed antiretroviral drugs. Failure to find a solution to drug abuse can lead to economic problems and handicap the social development of the country, as well as threatening the life and health of the people involved. In the South African context, the value of aftercare has been downplayed and there has been relatively little emphasis on aftercare and reintegration services in both research and practice. Therefore, it was the goal of this study to explore and describe the aftercare needs of nyaope users from both the users' and the significant others' points of view in Hammanskraal. In order to achieve this goal, a qualitative research was adopted to explore and describe the aftercare needs of nyaope users from both the users' and the significant others' points of view. Due to the nature of the study, the researcher had two sampling groups, namely (1) nyaope users and (2) significant others. The study was guided by a collective case study design. Semi-structured interviews were used as a data collection method for this study and two distinct interview schedules were developed and used for nyaope users and significant others, respectively. The researcher aimed at answering the following two research questions: (1) "Based on the views of nyaope users, what are the aftercare needs of nyaope users in the Hammanskraal community?"; and (2) "Based on the views of significant others, what are the aftercare needs of nyaope users in the Hammanskraal community?" From the raw data, the researcher implemented thematic analysis as stipulated by Braun and Clarke (2006) in analysing the data. The researcher used credibility and triangulation in establishing the trustworthiness of the data analysis. The findings from the two sets of samples were unpacked in three sections, namely, findings from the nyaope users, from significant others and the combined data with the aim of triangulation. The key findings from nyaope users and the significant others are as follows: The key findings from nyaope users were that nyaope use has a negative impact on the physical, psychological, spiritual well-being of the users. Causes of relapse were identified as a lack of support from the government and family members, personal problems that users encounter during the recovery process, going back to the same environment and being coerced to go for treatment. Furthermore, nyaope users indicated that they value the trust of community members that is often lost and can be regained by a change of lifestyles following treatment and getting volunteering opportunities in order to create awareness at local schools. The users indicated that they could achieve total abstinence if they can change the type of lifestyle they were living before, such strategies include going for treatment, adopting a more conducive and healthy lifestyle, get adequate support from their families, attending group sessions following treatment, the implementation of an adequate aftercare programme that could assist in preventing relapse, the creation of employment and spiritual support during and post treatment. The key findings from the significant others were that families are victims of theft due to nyaope users' stealing to sustain their habits. As a result significant others are left with feelings of disappointment and hurt. Nyaope also impacts negatively on family relationships in a manner that there is a lack of communication and ineffective communication among family members. The significant others identified the causes of relapse as a lack of educational programmes in communities, high unemployment rate, a lack of spiritual support, inadequate aftercare programmes and the return to the same community and friends following treatment. Significant others also indicated that nyaope users require volunteering opportunities in communities as a form of reintegration and that nyaope users need to change their lifestyles following treatment in order to regain trust from the community. Significant others recommended that nyaope users require support from family, spiritual support from spiritual leaders and psychosocial support in order for them to maintain total abstinence.

Pieterse, Eghardt Phillipus. "Re-connecting the divide : an integrated trade and transport node for the Hammanskraal commercial precinct." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/31580.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the reestablishment of the Hammanskraal train station, by providing an integrated transport node that includes a variety of community functions. The aim is to re-introduce the Stationarea as a signifi cant trade and transport node in the Hammanskraal community. The main routes linking to the railway station and the surrounding urban fabric are re-evaluated and altered to accommodate not only the railway programme, but also to better suit the growing needs of the community. Theoretically the project explores the infl uence architecture and spatial perceptions have on the social behaviour and the interactions between diff erent users in these spaces. These relationships are explored to create architecture that not only responds to existing conditions but also becomes a landmark in the area and a reference for future developments in the area. The theoretical investigation can be applied in a design such as the new Hammanskraal station as the characteristics and scope of this node need to integrate diff erent users and functions. Integrating these aspects into the design leads to new forms of interaction and spatial appropriation. The closure of the public component of the railway station resulted in the degradation and neglect of a site that is located within one of the busiest social and commercial nodes of the Hammanskraal Township. The suspended long distance commuter service in favour of the taxi and bus service has resulted in the lack of transport options to thousands of daily commuters between the township and the Pretoria CBD. The new Hammanskraal Railway interchange aims to reconnect the local residents, with a more economic means of travel, to the Pretoria CBD as most of them commute there for work opportunities. Integration and interaction between rail and road transport and numerous informal traders, within a vibrant urban space, are the main focus areas of the design. The design’s intent is to provide a reconnected township, while addressing the immediate needs of the site and the community. The redesign of the Hammanskraal Station precinct does not only reconnect the township to the railway system, but reintroduces much needed energy and public functions to the township itself while providing new economic opportunities both locally and in the surrounds.

Mkandla, Vuyisile. "[In]between - Using environmental psychology for the early intervention of learning difficulties at Sunshine Nursery School, Hammanskraal." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/78648.

Full text
Abstract:
Early childhood development (ECD) centres in townships often face environmental challenges concerning the implementation of the rights of children with learning difficulties to receive an education at a school within their local community. These environments have an influence on the behaviour(s) of children that will later influence their role in society. It is essential that all children, regardless of their dis/ability are included in this foundational plan, which will offer them the opportunity to integrate into society with the same opportunities as their peers. Within the field of environmental psychology, environmental challenges hindering the development of children with learning difficulties include the spatial legibility of an environment as well as the efforts of spatial and object design to reduce the effects of environmental stress on the user. The study examines the extent to which children aged five and six, with learning difficulties are able to interact with the physical environment of a mainstream ECD, specifically Sunshine Nursery School, Hammanskraal. The study further examines the implication that the design of the classroom environment might have on the individual developmental needs. The four crucial areas of child development: perceptual-motor, intellectual, social and emotional, are considered in examining the meaning of space and the classroom. A theoretical enquiry is undertaken to propose an effective learning environment for all children, in which their social and physical needs are met, regardless of their learning ability.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the role of Architecture in promoting participation, interaction and awareness of the public in sporting activities, specifically with regard to the underprivileged community of Hammanskraal. The problems with the existing sports facilities are the following: * the location of the facilities; and * the fact that even though they are public facilities, they do not necessarily act as public spaces. They are fenced off and cover a vast area of land without providing proper shade for the players and spectators. The proposed intervention addresses these problems through the introduction of sports facilities into the public realm. This is achieved through locating of these facilities next to a new railway station and pedestrian and vehicle route that crosses over the railway line (Fig 3). The proposal intends to create a threshold space for members of the community in which to interact through sport, trade, social and cultural activities. The programme will provide sports training fields, a multi -functional hall, a gymnasium, a station and retail facilities. The architectural response is informed by the following : * the amalgamation of sports facilities with the public space; * programmatic requirements; and * responses to contextual conditions.

Thesis (M Cur)-- University of Limpopo, 2012.
ABSTRACT Background and problem statement The increase in AIDS related deaths of parents leave many children orphaned and some of these children live with HIV. These children are cared for by primary caregivers who are mostly elderly women. The primary caregivers experiences challenges when caring for the children living with HIV. These challenges may be physical, spiritual, psychological and social. The researcher conducted a study in order to explore the experiences of primary caregivers caring for children living with HIV. Aim and objectives The aim of the study was to promote the mental health of primary caregivers who provide care for children living with HIV attending the Wellness Clinic at the Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal. The objectives of this study were to: i) describe the biographical data of primary caregivers who provide care for children living with HIV; ii) explore and describe the experiences of primary caregivers who provide care for children living - with HIV; and iii) make recommendations which are based on the findings of this study in order to assist the nursing personnel at the Wellness Clinic in the promotion of the mental health of primary caregivers based on the findings of this study. Research Design and method A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was utilised to enable the primary caregivers to share with the researchers their experiences of caring for children living with HIV. The setting was the Wellness Clinic at the Jubilee hospital, Hammanskraal. Ethical principles were adhered to in order to protect the rights of the primary caregivers. Throughout the process, the methods to ensyre trustworthiness of the study were foll9wed. A purposive sample of eight primary caregivers was chosen for the unstructured interviews. Data were analysed by the researcher and an independent coder using the Tescn method. Research Findings Consensus was reached after consultation with an independent coder,- about the following categories i) primary caregivers' experiences in caring for a child living with HIV related to the self of the caregiver; ii) primary caregivers' experiences related to the decision to disclose the child's HIV status to various role-players were influenced by stigmatisation and discrimination related to HIV and AIDS; iii) primary caregivers' challenges when caring for a child living with HIV; and iv) the mobilisation of resources by primary caregivers to assist them in caring for a child living with HIV. Findings were contexualised by implementing a literature control and recommendations were made to promote their mental health. Conclusions Primary caregivers who cared for children living with HIV in this study were mostly elderly women who were related to the children. They took over the care of the children living with HIV after the children's parents had died. Although they were faced with many challenges, their concern for the children's wellbeing made them to give the children loving care. They found strength and support from prayer, faith and hope in God. The primary caregivers also appreciated the support they received from the health care workers at the Well"ness Clinic.
