William Hampson, classics graduate and barrister, burst into science with his patent for air-liquefaction in 1895. Its success provided the means of isolating the rarer permanent atmospheric gases, and it formed the basis for multi-tonnage gas liquefaction. The British Oxygen Company acquired Hampson's patent interests.

Abstract:
The genera Cryphia Hübner, 1818 and Bryophila Treitschke, 1825 in mountainous Central Asia (in the range of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) are reviewed. Both molecular and morphological data are used. A short morphometric test of male genitalia within 3 widely distributed and common species processed (Bryophila sordida Staudinger, 1900, B. rueckbeili Boursin, 1953, B. plumbeola (Staudinger, 1881)); the vesica is quite variable, spike is less variable, valva is highly variable. The CO1 differences between studied species in Central Asia are over at least 0,02; the p-distances inside of B. plumbeola clade are no more than 0,003 and this is clear evidence of their conspecificity. The lectotypes of Bryophila miltophaea Hampson, 1908 and Bryophila subliterata Filipjev, 1931 are designated. The following new statuses are applied: Bryophila eucta hannemanni Boursin, 1961, stat. n., B. plumbeola hampsoni (Draudt, 1931), stat. n., B. plumbeola miltophaea (Hampson, 1908), stat. n., B. plumbeola puengeleri (Draudt, 1931), stat. n., B. plumbeola vilis (Hampson, 1908), stat. n. A new subspecies, B. raptricula montanotricula Korb, ssp. n., is described from Katta-Kaindy Mts., 8.5 km S of Englchek, 2509 m, N 41°57’518 E 79° 7’782. It differs from the subspecies B. raptricula aksuensis by its wing pattern (structure of the middle band and of the white strokes) and by DNA (CO1sequence). A list of Cryphia and Bryophila species erroneously placed into the mountainous Central Asiatic fauna is compiled.

Camnerin, Sofia. "Försoningens mellanrum : en analys av Daphne Hampsons och Rita Nakashima Brocks teologiska tolkningar." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Teologiska institutionen, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-9413.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and critically evaluate Christian theology of atonement and redemption, in order to contribute to contemporary theology of atonement and redemption. The purpose is reached through an analysis of the work of two contemporary feminist theologians; Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock. Hampson has formulated a sharp post-Christian position. Brock has distinguished herself through her critique of the Christian concept of atonement and through her contributions to reconciliation and redemption. Both Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock argue that Christian atonement-theology, primarily the so called objective model, is hurtful to children and victims of abuse and violence. They both argue that theological language is not innocent. At the same time, they illustrate broken relationships, sufferings, and problems they want to change, give theological interpretations of how that change is to take place and present methodologies on how to reach reconciliation between human beings and God as well as between human beings. In two steps I undertake a critical analysis of content and presuppositions in Daphne Hampson’s and Rita Nakashima Brock’s theologies of atonement and redemption. In the first step, I describe Hampson’s and Brock’s critique of Christian atonement-theology. I analyze their theological critique and theological construction in a model "from-transition-to". My critical analysis focuses especially on internal consistency. In the second part, the analysis of presuppositions, I explain basic principles upon which they shape their theology. The analysis is made up by the analytical concepts; theoretical arguments of knowledge, understandings of faith, and the position of the subject. I also analyze other essential concepts out of which gender is one. In the last chapter I present my own constructive contribution, structured by content and presuppositions. I argue that theology is both a critical and constructive discipline. In the content-response I discuss images of God, the tragic, the cross, and the hope. In the presuppositions-response I discuss the concept "space-in-between". In conclusion I propose that theology of atonement/redemption is shaped between post and Christian. I argue that space-in-between-perspectives are necessarily experimental and critical, a space on the border where marginalized voices are to be included.

Passerini, Julien. "Field and laboratory trials in Mali to determine the effects of neem extracts on three millet pests, Heliocheilus albipunctella De Joannis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Coniesta ignefusalis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Kraussaria angulifera Krauss (Orthoptera: Acrididae)." Thesis, McGill University, 1991. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=60451.

Full text
Abstract:
Formulations of aqueous neem extracts were sprayed in field experiments. Results showed that a 0.5% and 1% concentrations were effective in reducing grasshopper feeding and diminishing damage caused by the millet stemborer, C. ignefusalis. In 1988, neem diminished egg-laying and mine damage by the headminer, H. albipunctella, but no data were available for 1989 because of the low infestation levels of this pest.
Neem exhibited some systemic activity. Soil applied neem kernel powder partially protected millet against K. angulifera and C. ignefusalis. Neem treated plots yielded more grain and suffered less damage by insect pests than four different cultural practices. Only the addition of fertilizer was superior to neem in reducing yield losses but it was inferior in limiting pest losses.
Experiments to test the residual activity of neem showed that this botanical insecticide can effectively protect millet against K. angulifera for at least seven days, and possibly longer if ultra-violet rays and rainfall are not prevalent. Analysis of plant selection behavior of K. angulifera showed that neem is an antifeedant rather than a repellent. On first to third instar nymphs, growth regulating activity expressed as a difficulty in molting or an absence of sclerotization may occur. Topical applications of neem to the stemborer, C. ignefusalis, also caused growth abnormalities, mostly molting disturbances. Treated larvae that reached the adult stage were malformed.
This research indicates that neem based insecticides offer considerable promise for Sahelian farmers for protecting millet crops. It is effective against K. angulifera, but less effective against the stemborer, C. ignefusalis. Although the data obtained for H. albipunctella in 1988 was promising, it was insufficient to reach any conclusions regarding neem's efficacy with respect to this pest.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the results of an alternatives analysis of gas-liquefaction methods used in liquid air energy storage (LAES) systems that incorporates two novel measures of performance (MOP) into the analysis: system complexity score and system density. The cryogenic methods typically considered for air, and used in this trade study, include Linde-Hampson, Claude, Heylandt, and cascade [1]. With these four options of air-liquefaction currently in use for a variety of purposes with ranging scales, there exists no standard selection process for the air-liquefaction method in LAES. This trade study provides fundamental design solutions for given stakeholder requirements, allowing for a pragmatic analysis of integration for future implementation of LAES systems. The intent of these design solutions is to be used in the earliest stage of consideration of a LAES implementation, helping stakeholders quickly narrow the focus of their design engineers to a specific liquefaction process. This will reduce the complexity of integration techniques and processes and streamline LAES into the energy-storage industry. The results of this study showed that with evenly weighted MOP the Heylandt method had the highest final weighted score (0.9), followed by Cascade (0.88), Claude (0.86), and Linde-Hampson (0.67). However, the results showed that the Cascade method was the most frequent design solution (8/11) from 11 variations of MOP weight distributions.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the results of a theoretical analysis of a heat exchanger design for the challenging application of a small-scale modified Linde-Hampson cycle liquid air energy storage system (LAESS). A systems engineering approach was taken to determine the best heat exchanger alternative for incorporation into an existing LAESS. Two primary heat exchanger designs were analyzed and compared: a finned tube heat exchanger (FTHE) design and a printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) design. These designs were chosen as alternatives due to the gas-to-gas cooling that occurs in the heat exchanger, and material selection was based on the requirement for the heat exchanger to withstand the cryogenic temperatures required for the system to produce liquid nitrogen. Thermodynamic analysis was conducted using the ε-NTU method and fin theory to determine the dimensional requirements for the finned tube heat exchanger and a trade-off study was conducted to compare the alternatives. Based on the results from the study, the PCHE was the preferred alternative due to an inherent small footprint, comparable cost to manufacture, simple integration into the LAESS and inherent safety features that are critical when working with high pressure systems. Future work will include subsystem and system integration and testing to obtain a consistently functional prototype that produces liquid nitrogen.

Abstract:
Abstract In the quest to recover by-passed hydrocarbons, extend the life of mature fields, increase hydrocarbon reserves and satiate the increasing global demand for energy, the need for robust reservoir characterization using acoustic impedance inversion continues to grow. In this study, petrophysical parameters were evaluated for two sand intervals RX2 and RX5. Detailed cross-plot analysis of robust petrophysical properties, (density, water Saturation, Lambda-rho and Mu-rho and Porosity) facilitated fluid and lithology discrimination. Well to seismic correlations and acoustic-Impedance model-based, 3-D seismic inversion was done using Hampson Russell software, while petrophysical attribute slices and event-time structure maps were extracted at two horizons - H1 and H2. Results show that RX2 is 100ft thick in Well A, ranging from 5860ft to 5960ft, and 141ft thick in Well B, ranging from 5794ft to 5935ft. Interval RX5, 71ft thick, ranges from 6447ft to 6518ft in Well A, and 88ft thick in Well B, ranging from 6447ft to 6535ft. These intervals had average densities of 2.20g/cc for RX2 and 2.23g/cc for RX5 in Well A. In well B, density values are 1.95g/cc in RX2 and 2.06g/cc for RX5. Average porosities of 25.5% and 27.5% in RX2 and RX5 respectively for Well A; 29% and 19% in RX2 and RX5 respectively for Well B were observed. Respectively, average water and hydrocarbon saturation values of 0.31Swand 0.69Shfor Well A; 0.51Swand 0.49Shfor Well B, was recorded in both intervals. From the results, the thicknesses of RX2 and RX5 conform to the standard thickness of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the study area. Furthermore, the discrimination of the reservoir contents into fluid and lithology by the cross plots, and the observations in the attribute slices indicate that the selected intervals RX2 and RX5 are viable conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Abstract:
The fouling effect of seawater on a 90/10 Cu/Ni commercial heat exchanger tube is investigated. A fouling monitoring device, designed on the basis of fouling thermal resistance, is used for the current experimental study. First, the seawater samples collected in different times from Hampton, Rye, and Wallis beaches in New Hampshire, USA are vacuum-filtered down to a 10 μm filter paper to remove suspended solids, micro-organisms, and the majority of biological spores. Then, the filtered seawater samples are circulated through the closed loop experimental setup for two weeks and the fouling thermal resistance is measured continuously. The results show different fouling behavior for the seawater samples confirmed by the different composition of the samples. Analytical microscopy is performed on the tube surface before and after the experiments to see the effect of seawater fouling on the tube surface. The results of fouling monitoring experiments reveal a higher fouling thermal resistance for one of the seawater samples, Hampton seawater, contrary to the results of SEM\EDS analysis which show lower crystallization for Hampton sample. Water decomposition analysis shows the lowest sodium content for Hampton seawater compared to the other samples. Accordingly, accelerated corrosion of the tube surface occurs for Hampton seawater due to the presence of chlorine ions and low concentration of sodium. The high fouling resistance of Hampton seawater can be explained by participation of several fouling mechanisms simultaneously which makes a composite fouling behavior for Hampton seawater sample. The results of the current study are critical for the industries which use seawater as the cooling water source.
