Camnerin, Sofia. "Försoningens mellanrum : en analys av Daphne Hampsons och Rita Nakashima Brocks teologiska tolkningar." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Teologiska institutionen, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-9413.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and critically evaluate Christian theology of atonement and redemption, in order to contribute to contemporary theology of atonement and redemption. The purpose is reached through an analysis of the work of two contemporary feminist theologians; Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock. Hampson has formulated a sharp post-Christian position. Brock has distinguished herself through her critique of the Christian concept of atonement and through her contributions to reconciliation and redemption. Both Daphne Hampson and Rita Nakashima Brock argue that Christian atonement-theology, primarily the so called objective model, is hurtful to children and victims of abuse and violence. They both argue that theological language is not innocent. At the same time, they illustrate broken relationships, sufferings, and problems they want to change, give theological interpretations of how that change is to take place and present methodologies on how to reach reconciliation between human beings and God as well as between human beings. In two steps I undertake a critical analysis of content and presuppositions in Daphne Hampson’s and Rita Nakashima Brock’s theologies of atonement and redemption. In the first step, I describe Hampson’s and Brock’s critique of Christian atonement-theology. I analyze their theological critique and theological construction in a model "from-transition-to". My critical analysis focuses especially on internal consistency. In the second part, the analysis of presuppositions, I explain basic principles upon which they shape their theology. The analysis is made up by the analytical concepts; theoretical arguments of knowledge, understandings of faith, and the position of the subject. I also analyze other essential concepts out of which gender is one. In the last chapter I present my own constructive contribution, structured by content and presuppositions. I argue that theology is both a critical and constructive discipline. In the content-response I discuss images of God, the tragic, the cross, and the hope. In the presuppositions-response I discuss the concept "space-in-between". In conclusion I propose that theology of atonement/redemption is shaped between post and Christian. I argue that space-in-between-perspectives are necessarily experimental and critical, a space on the border where marginalized voices are to be included.

Passerini, Julien. "Field and laboratory trials in Mali to determine the effects of neem extracts on three millet pests, Heliocheilus albipunctella De Joannis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Coniesta ignefusalis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Kraussaria angulifera Krauss (Orthoptera: Acrididae)." Abstract:
Formulations of aqueous neem extracts were sprayed in field experiments. Results showed that a 0.5% and 1% concentrations were effective in reducing grasshopper feeding and diminishing damage caused by the millet stemborer, C. ignefusalis. In 1988, neem diminished egg-laying and mine damage by the headminer, H. albipunctella, but no data were available for 1989 because of the low infestation levels of this pest.
Neem exhibited some systemic activity. Soil applied neem kernel powder partially protected millet against K. angulifera and C. ignefusalis. Neem treated plots yielded more grain and suffered less damage by insect pests than four different cultural practices. Only the addition of fertilizer was superior to neem in reducing yield losses but it was inferior in limiting pest losses.
Experiments to test the residual activity of neem showed that this botanical insecticide can effectively protect millet against K. angulifera for at least seven days, and possibly longer if ultra-violet rays and rainfall are not prevalent. Analysis of plant selection behavior of K. angulifera showed that neem is an antifeedant rather than a repellent. On first to third instar nymphs, growth regulating activity expressed as a difficulty in molting or an absence of sclerotization may occur. Topical applications of neem to the stemborer, C. ignefusalis, also caused growth abnormalities, mostly molting disturbances. Treated larvae that reached the adult stage were malformed.
This research indicates that neem based insecticides offer considerable promise for Sahelian farmers for protecting millet crops. It is effective against K. angulifera, but less effective against the stemborer, C. ignefusalis. Although the data obtained for H. albipunctella in 1988 was promising, it was insufficient to reach any conclusions regarding neem's efficacy with respect to this pest.

Jones, Susan Hicks. "Creating a tradition: Early campus planning at Hampton Institute, 1868-1893." W&M ScholarWorks, 1992. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539618513.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this study was to explore the beginnings of higher education for freed slaves after the Civil War as reflected in the development of the built environment of one of the earliest and most prominent of the historically Black colleges, Hampton Institute. The main purpose was to study the way in which campus planning was implemented at Hampton, its intentions and effects. The study had three hypotheses: (1) a master plan for the development of the campus of Hampton Institute was created by its founder, (2) this master plan was followed by the administration and builders during the early stages of the school's development and (3) the founder of Hampton Institute was aware of the symbolism of the architecture and used it intentionally to create a sense of specialness and to inspire strong attachment among the students of the school.;The study of numerous original documents available in the Hampton University Archives revealed answers to these questions. First, there is ample evidence that a master plan did exist for the development of Hampton's campus and that it was, to a large degree followed. The architectural intentions of Hampton's principal revealed a great deal about the beginnings of Negro education and the controversy which existed concerning the type of education which was best suited to the needs of Blacks. They also reflect the unique mission of the early Black schools. Hampton was the model for many schools which espoused one view of the type of education which would best prepare Blacks to take their place in post war society and, therefore, was an appropriate subject for this study.;The study also revealed certain common characteristics which, when present, produce coherent, consistent campus planning. This information is important for present day administrators trying to promote effective decision making regarding campus growth.;The extension of this study to include other prominent Black schools would provide valuable insights into the evolution of higher education for Blacks. These schools were shaped by their unique mission which was in turn shaped by the unique educational needs of the group they were founded to serve.

Reiske, William Francis. "Factors Affecting Hampton Roads, Virginia, Elected Official Emergency Management Recovery Policy Decisions." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3507.

Full text
Abstract:
For many regions and local governments, budgetary restraints limit funds appropriated for emergency management activities to inadequate levels, and little guidance exists related to decision factors used by elected officials in identifying budget and ordinance priorities. Using Kwon, Choi, and Bae's conceptualization of punctuated equilibrium theory, the purpose of this case study was to examine how decision factors influenced Hampton Roads, Virginia, elected official disaster recovery policy between 2003 and 2012. Data were collected through review of 1,310 city documents and 10 semistructured interviews with elected officials. Data were inductively coded and analyzed using a thematic analysis procedure. Data analysis resulted in the identification of 3 decision factor themes that guided post disaster recovery in Hampton Roads: (a) establishing a sense of normalcy in terms of budget appropriations and ordinances for security, safety and quality of services short-term recovery policy, (b) budgetary resiliency to encourage the restoration of infrastructure related to long-term recovery policy, and (c) the development of self-sufficient processes that lead to an anticipatory mindset with issuance of mitigation ordinances and capital improvement appropriations policy. The findings confirmed punctuated equilibrium theory, as man-made disasters triggered short-term recovery policy decisions. Results of the study may affect positive social change by providing local elected representatives with a 'tool kit' of decision factors to consistently address post disaster recovery policy for public safety, security, and stability via the governance mechanisms of strategic planning, appropriation decisions, and assessment.

Chapman, Llewella. "Representing Henry's Royal Palace : the relationship between film, television and Hampton Court Palace." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2017. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67097/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between the heritage industry on the one hand, and the film and television industries on the other. It will argue that a hierarchy of heritage sites exists in the United Kingdom, which, depending on a site’s placement within this hierarchy, determines how a site engages with film and television. Furthermore, this thesis argues that there are three main ways in which heritage sites can engage with film and television: firstly, by allowing film and television productions to make use of a site; secondly through using film and television as part of a site’s interpretation strategy; and finally, by using film and television as part of a site’s marketing strategy. As a case study, this thesis focuses on Hampton Court Palace, a site maintained by Historic Royal Palaces. There is evidence to suggest that this organisation places itself highly within the hierarchy, and therefore this thesis will analyse the ways that it engages with film and television at Hampton Court Palace. First, it will document the establishment of Hampton Court’s policy for allowing film producers access to this site, including case studies of selected films such as The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933) and To Kill a King (2003). Then it will analyse how the three departments instrumental in designing and installing exhibition strategies at Hampton Court Palace; Curatorial, Interpretation and Marketing; make use of film and television to present this site’s history to visitors. The thesis will make an intervention within current scholarship within the area of film, television and heritage studies through understanding how heritage organisations choose to engage with film and television. Most research within this area focuses on visitor engagement with heritage sites encouraged by film and television, for example tourism trails and film pilgrimages. Instead, this thesis will research how sites engage with film and television from the perspective of internal departments working within a heritage organisation.

Reilly, James Joseph. "Load Testing Deteriorated Spans of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel for Load Rating Recommendations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74302.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is one of the oldest prestressed concrete structures in the United States. The 3.5 mile long twin structure includes the world's first underwater tunnel between two man-made islands. Throughout its 60 years in service, the harsh environment along the Virginia coast has taken its toll on the main load carrying girders. Concrete spalling has exposed prestressing strands within the girders allowing corrosion to spread. Some of the more damaged girders have prestressing strands that have completely severed due to the extensive corrosion. The deterioration has caused select girders to fail the necessary load ratings. The structure acts as an evacuation route for the coast and is a main link for the local Norfolk Naval Base and surrounding industry. Because of these constraints, load posting is not a viable option. Live load testing of five spans was performed to investigate the behavior of the damaged spans. Innovative techniques were used during the load test including a wireless system to measure strains. Two different deflection systems were implemented on the spans, which were located about one mile offshore. The deflection data was later compared head to head. From the load test results, live load distribution factors were developed for both damaged and undamaged girders. The data was also used by the local Department of Transportation to validate computer models in an effort to help pass the load rating. Overall, this research was at the forefront of the residual strength of prestressed concrete girders and the testing of in-service bridges.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative certification instruction in a public education environment. In addition, the study compared traditional certification instruction to alternative certification instruction on the basis of educational quality. Due to increasing teacher shortages across the country, the search for an alternative route of certification has generated ideological debates revolving around the supply and demand of potential teachers, educational quality, and the potential of alternative means of teacher procurement. There are myriad arguments in support of and against alternative certification programs. This study evaluated the perceived effectiveness of alternatively certified teachers in a public education environment by comparing principal's perceptions of traditional certification instruction to alternative certification instruction existent with their region, on the basis of educational quality. Survey research was used to determine perceptions which Hampton Roads principals who have, or who have had, responsibility for supervision of alternatively and traditionally certified personnel. It focused on 40 statements comparing traditionally certified teachers and alternatively certified teachers. It included such factors as pedagogical content knowledge, classroom management and instruction, behavior management, attitude, life experience, professionalism, professional development and evaluation. A series of 40 independent t-tests and a factor analysis were accomplished utilizing the data derived from these surveys. Results of this study indicated that the perceptions among Hampton Roads principals differ significantly regarding the effectiveness of alternatively certified teachers from those of previous research. Demographic data found these perceptions exist with principals of all school levels and are not related to the principal's years of experience, formal education or student enrollment. Ninety five percent of the 40 comparative statements favor those teachers achieving certification through traditional certification programs. Areas that reflected particularly substantial differences were content knowledge, instructional planning, and classroom discipline. Recommendations for practice include but are not limited to standardized supervision of alternative certification programs, quality screening of applicants, quality mentor programs, standardized and subsidized student teaching, competency testing, formalized state and district assessment and quality recruitment.

Abstract:
The Hampton Roads region of southeast Virginia is largely defined by its abundant water resources. These water resources are also a source of unique issues for the region. Specifically, water quality challenges related to the Chesapeake Bay and recurrent flooding are the major concerns. Green infrastructure (GI) has emerged in recent years as an alternative to traditional stormwater conveyance and detention focused systems. GI practices focus on integrating infiltration, evapotranspiration, and other components of the water cycle into more conventional stormwater management systems. These systems provide several positive benefits, including local water quality and quantity control, community revitalization, and various public health benefits. In addition, GI implementation has seen strong levels of support from the Cooperative Extension System, with Extension faculty and staff around the U.S. supporting local municipalities through GI research, promotion, and program development. Despite widespread interest, GI has been slow to be adopted due to various barriers to its implementation. This study sought to identify the major barriers to the implementation of GI practices in Hampton Roads by conducting a needs assessment. Municipal stormwater staff were invited to participate in an online survey aimed at identifying the most significant barriers in the region. At the same time, local staff with Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) were interviewed to explore their potential to become involved in promoting GI adoption in Hampton Roads. Survey respondents and interview participants found common ground in identifying costs, funding, and maintenance issues as the most significant barriers to GI implementation in Hampton Roads. In addition, VCE staff were found to be well suited to support widespread GI adoption in the region, having familiarity with the GI concept and access to unique resources in the form of knowledgeable Master Gardener volunteers and connections to Virginia Tech. Recommendations for VCE involvement in promoting GI in Hampton Roads include conducting cost studies, developing and hosting maintenance training programs, and taking advantage of partnerships to identify and obtain funding from diverse sources. By focusing on these widely acknowledged challenges at the regional scale, VCE can support GI implementation throughout all of Hampton Roads.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the problem of early school entry as it affects the criteria of achievement, self-concept, and social maturity. The research design was a comparative associational design. The statistical procedure used was the two-way analysis of variance. The level of statistical significance was noted at .05. The subjects in this study were sixty-two kindergarten children in six schools in the.school system. The six schools were chosen as representative of the racial make-up of the school population. There was stratified random sampling to include children with early and not early birthdates. Race, sex and birthdates were the independent variables. Several instruments were used to measure achievement, social maturity, and self-concept. The Wide Range Achievement Test R-1, Level 1, The Standards of Learning Objectives, and the Metropolitan Reading Test, Level II, were used to measure achievement. The Burks' Behavior Rating Scales, Preschool and Kindergarten edition, were used to measure social maturity, and the Self-Concept and Motivation Inventory Pre-School/Kindergarten Form (SCAMIN) assessed self-concept. The following conclusions were formulated based upon critical analysis of the data. There was a statistically significant difference (p<.05) in achievement and age, race and sex in a few of the variables studied such as the following: 1. the WRAT math across age and race. The not early groups scored higher than the early groups and the white groups scored higher than the black group. 2. the Metropolitan Readiness test and race. The white children scored higher than the black children and the not early children scored higher than the early children. 3. the SOL reading objectives, age and sex. The not early group scored higher than the early group. The white children scored higher than the black children. The girls in the early group scored higher than the boys, and the boys in the not early group scored higher than the girls. 4. the SOL math objectives across age and race. The early groups scored lower than the not early group and the white children scored higher than the black children. There was also a statistically significant difference (p<.05) in poor ego strength and race. The white children had higher ego strength than the black children.

Gero, Jesse. "Moral Injury and the Puzzle of Immunity-Violation." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_theses/73.

Full text
Abstract:
The First Amendment gives U.S. citizens a Hohfeldian legal immunity that disables Congress from removing citizens’ legal liberty to criticize the government. Any attempt by Congress to remove this liberty would fail, but such an attempt would still wrong citizens. The familiar concept of claim-violation does not fully account for this wrong. Claims name actions that ought not be performed and are violated when those actions are performed. Immunities names actions that cannot be performed. Congress would wrong citizens not by doing something it ought not do but by attempting and failing to do something it cannot do. Using elements of Jean Hampton’s expressive theory of punishment, I analyze Congress’ attempt (and other similar acts) as an expressive act that denies the existence of immunities. Congress’ immunity-“contradiction” would wrong U.S. citizens by denying the value that generates the immunity, by causing damage to the acknowledgement of the citizens’ value, and by threatening the existence of the immunity.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores multiple stakeholders' perceptions with regard to administrative rules governing public participation in the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) in Virginia. In 2007, the HRTPO received conditional certification during its quadrennial review with seven corrective actions related to public participation. Subsequently, it started to reform its public participation practices, and in 2012 it received full certification. This study explores how the HRTPO stakeholders perceive the administrative rules that govern public participation processes, more positively (as 'green tape') or more negatively (as 'red tape'), and how those perceptions have changed since 2007, relying on in-depth interviews as well as archival documents. Before 2007, top management officials had pessimistic perceptions of public participation in general and the rules in particular. The negative perceptions changed when new senior staff arrived in 2008 and initiated reforms, most notably by hiring a public involvement administrator. Acting as a transformative leader, this administrator began to adopt outreach programs, which stakeholders considered successful. By unpacking the notion of stakeholder red tape, guided by the attributes of stakeholder red tape and green tape, this study found that stakeholders perceived the rules more positively than they did in 2007.

Abstract:
All branches of the military service have humanitarian transfer policies which require that consideration be given to the special educational and medical needs of dependent family members during the reassignment process. These policies may result in certain school districts serving a disproportionate number of military-connected handicapped children. Despite the federal financial assistance received by LEAs under P.L. 94-142 (Education for All Handicapped Children Act) and P.L. 81-874 (School Assistance for Federally Affected Areas) the presence of these children may create a fiscal burden on the LEAs. This study sought to determine if seven school districts in the Tidewater area of Virginia served a disproportionate number of military connected handicapped children, what the additional costs were to the LEAs to educate these children, and what percentage of military parents of handicapped children were assigned to the Tidewater area due to the special educational needs of their children. Analysis of the data indicated that 7.7% of the total military enrollment (40,824) of the seven school districts were enrolled in special education programs. This percentage is not considered disproportionate when compared with the 10.3% of the nonmilitary population enrolled in special education programs. A number of possible explanations were offered for these inconsistencies. Per pupil costs were calculated for four self-contained programs in the Newport News School Division. Analysis of the data indicated that additional costs were incurred by the LEA to educate students in these high cost programs. These additional costs varied due to differing amounts of revenue received under P.L. 81-874 and the state reimbursement formula. It was concluded that the findings_of this study would be applicable only to the Newport News School Division and to the programs and settings that were investigated. Nineteen percent of the parents of military-connected handicapped children from five school districts were surveyed. Analysis of the data indicated that 55% of those parents were familiar with the armed forces' humanitarian reassignment programs. Forty-one percent of those familiar with the humanitarian reassignment programs had requested a transfer to the Tidewater area on the basis of their child's special educational needs. A growing awareness of reassignment policies has implications for certain school divisions. These implications were presented and discussed.

Deets, Cheryl Rice. "Clinical pastoral education in a postmodern culture| An integrative theistic model of CPE for ministry practitioners in Hampton Roads, Virginia." Thesis, Regent University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3573633.

Abstract:

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is professional theological education that emphasizes experiential learning through a process of action and reflection referred to as the "clinical method." In Clinical Pastoral Education, theological students, ordained clergy, and qualified lay persons, under the direct supervision of a trained supervisor, are given opportunities for learning and growth in the art of pastoral care. CPE seeks to integrate knowledge and insights from theology, the behavioral sciences, and learning theory into pastoral functioning.

This ministry project examined the future of Clinical Pastoral Education in light of a profound cultural shift toward a postmodern worldview, and presented an integrative theistic model for a basic unit of CPE that addressed the most pressing challenges that epitomize this paradigm. It incorporated three of the most salient dimensions of postmodern contextualization, a sense of community and relationship, an appreciation for diversity, and a holistic approach focused on the whole person with emphasis on emotional health and well-being and spiritual formation. Since Clinical Pastoral Education is first and foremost theological education, the primary goal of this program was "to prepare God's people for works of service" (Eph 4:12 NIV)

The ministry project was designed as an extended, part-time unit of CPE. The clinical setting was Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. The age range for participants was limited to the generations most affected by the postmodern worldview. Since CPE is graduate-level theological education, the targeted age range for participants in this project was from age 26 to age 51.

The integrity of the CPE learning process requires small group interaction. Five chaplain interns were participants in this ministry project. Because of sample size, a qualitative approach which relied on the self-report of the participants was used in evaluating the ministry project. The responses given by the CPE interns who were a part of this study strongly supported the premise that an integrative, theistic model for Clinical Pastoral Education designed specifically for postmodern individuals would be efficacious in helping them meet their professional ministry goals, equipping them to do the work of ministry in their churches and communities.

Fryman, Oliva. "Making the bed : the practice, role and significance of housekeeping in the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court Palace 1689-1737." Thesis, Kingston University, 2011. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/22527/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores and analyses the practices, role and significance of housekeeping in the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court in the period between 1689 and 1737. Specifically, it seeks to chart contemporary practices of care and maintenance and to situate this work within the context of the rooms that lay at the heart of the late-Stuart and early-Hanoverian courts. A broad range of primary sources have been used to inform the study, in particular the records of the Lord Chamberlain and the Great Wardrobe. These archives are considered in relation to the material culture of the interiors at Hampton Court and are placed within the broader framework of social and political histories of the period. The thesis is divided into two main parts, the first of which explores the context of the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court. Starting with the premise that the practices of housekeeping were shaped by the specific environment in which they operated, it provides an exposition of the dual significance of this area of the palace as a space for magnificent court ceremony and as a retreat for the rituals of royal private life. Developing these findings, the second part of the study discusses housekeeping practices and the servants who undertook this work. In particular, it focuses on the identity, role and status of the lower ranking female servants of the bedchamber department, the Keeper of the Standing Wardrobe and the Privy Lodgings and the craftsmen of the Great Wardrobe. Throughout the discussion of these individuals, and the practices of care and maintenance, is framed by an analysis of the motivations for good housekeeping at court, and the meanings that were ascribed to this work. The research contained within this thesis contributes to our knowledge of the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court, in a key phase of the palace's history. by offering a more complete picture of how these rooms were inhabited by domestic servants as well as the monarch. New light is also shed on the many long periods when Hampton Court lay empty and the spheres of activity that took place in the absence of the court. The findings of this thesis demonstrate the significant role played by housekeeping as an essential underpinning for the use of Hampton Court as a royal home and as a splendid place of court.

Abstract:
A HISTORICAL CASE STUDY OF THE ARIKARA, HIDATSA, AND MANDAN INDIANS AT HAMPTON NORMAL AND AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE, VIRGINIA, 1878-1911 By Nancy E. Jones-Oltjenbruns, Ph.D. A Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2012 Director: Maike I. Philipsen, PhD Professor, School of Education Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute played a role in the education of American Indians. This facet of American Indians education was examined through the lives of Arikara, Hidatsa, and Mandan students from the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota. The Three Affiliated Tribes’ students attended Hampton between 1878 and 1911. The federal government generally viewed American Indians as a problem so efforts were made to assimilate them into the majority culture. Education was a component of that process. The lack of knowledge about the Plains Indians contributed to their selection for this study. Lesser known tribes do not have a prominent place in the scholarship on 19th century Indian education. This study contributes to the literature by providing historical evidence related to the Fort Berthold Reservation students. The majority of teachers who instructed Indian students were non-Indian, but it was important for them to understand the specifics of Indian culture. Early staff at Hampton thought of themselves as civilizers, missionaries, and teachers. When the doors of Hampton opened, it was the role of staff to instruct the African American students in those skills that would allow them to advance in the White world. This was the same mandate regarding American Indians. The staff was instrumental in every aspect of American Indian education. Although Indian students including the Fort Berthold students never gained equal standing with African Americans or Whites on campus, they acquired a level of acceptance by staff and students. Views of Indian students toward staff, their education, school, and fellow students varied. There were members of the Fort Berthold Reservation who appreciated their education at Hampton, while some students did not complete their educational endeavors. Generally, Fort Berthold students learned skills that would be useful upon their return home. The Indian students felt they had an obligation to their people and that education was more than groundwork for their own prosperity. While education could provide a respectable living, the Fort Berthold Reservation students had a responsibility to teach those back on the reservation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the twenty-first century Hampton Court Palace is widely recognised as one of the UK's top historic visitor attractions. Historic Royal Palaces, the charitable trust responsible for the upkeep and display of the palace, has a strong organisational identity, with a purpose that is carefully coordinated to engage the visiting public through displays that focus on key events in the site's history. However, when Hampton Court was opened up free of charge in 1838, visitors were presented with a rather different public spectacle. The majority of rooms were set up to display paintings from the Royal Collection and the site was promoted by the social reformers of the day as a place where the public, particularly the working classes, could be educated and improved. This thesis will demonstrate how Hampton Court has developed from a public art gallery of the 1830s to the site of historic significance that we know today. It is a transition which features a significant duality. On the one hand, the palace has been periodically reinvented in line with changing ideas of what role it should perform in society; on the other, clear circular trends can be identified in successivea pproachesto the administration and display at Hampton Court, which often link the twenty-first century idea of the palace surprisingly closely to its historical characterisationsT. his thesis arguest hat Hampton Court Palace's development has been a chequered process, which paradoxically combines both innovative reinvention and significant continuity. Using significant episodes in the palace's history - the re-decoration of the Great Hall (1840-6), the removal of the Raphael Cartoons (1865), the excavation of the moat (1909-10), the refurbishment of the State Apartments (1938) and the introduction of admission fees (1914) - this thesis seeks to investigate the varied, and often conflicting, guises that Hampton Court has adopted between 1838 and 1938. The discussion will be set in the context of three broad themes, that of `control', `access' and `display'. Within this frame of reference, the thesis uses source material that illuminates both the creation of the palace's outward face and the public's response to it. The first category is largely dominated by the records of the Office of Works, the government department responsible for the site during the period in question. The second aspect of the study is informed by a rather more disparate group of sources, ranging from newspaper reports to advertising images. Together they build a picture of how an historic visitor attraction at Hampton Court Palace was `made'.

_________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The excessive use of cars is responsible for individual, environmental, economic and social problems. As a consequence, the development of measures to reduce car use and encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport is needed. One strategy considered efficient is the change to public transport, as this transportation mode offers several advantages, especially when operated with quality. The use of public transportation, however, is influenced by environmental, socio-demographic and psychosocial variables. In this investigation, we test an integrated model to verify how the following psychosocial variables influence the use of public transport: intention, perceived behavioral control, attitude, personal norm, social norm, guilt, problem awareness and awareness of consequences. We performed a comparative study between two samples: one in the Federal District - Brazil (n = 312) and another in the region of Hampton Roads-VA - United States (n = 518). Participants responded to an online survey consisting of 31 item scale and socio demographic questions. The instrument was submitted to semantic validation procedures, confirmatory factor analysis and measurement invariance tests, to ensure its reliability and suitability to measure the same constructs in both samples surveyed. The invariance of the causal relationship between the variables arranged in the model was also tested, to identify whether the estimated models were equivalent for both samples. Finally, we compared the causal relationships found in both models. The results indicated equivalence between the two samples, regarding both the measures and the causal relations between the variables of the model. The estimates of the model fit indices were satisfactory in both samples. Comparing the models, more similarities than differences were found, which may be attributed to both the universality of the tested theoretical model, as well as the contextual similarities between the two regions investigated. The intention was a strong predictor of behavior, being mainly influenced by the perception of behavioral control. This result reveals that the more people realize that using public transportation is an easy behavior to be undetaken, the greater their intention to use this mode of transport. Normative and control beliefs were more relevant in predicting the intention then pro-environmental orientation. Differences were found regarding the role of attitude and personal norms for expressing intentions as well as the influence of attitude and feelings of guilt for the perception of behavioral control. We suggest interventions for bring about an increase perceived control, so that public transportation can be seen as an easy transportation option. It is estimated that perceived control, intention and public transportation use could be increased by providing information, encouraging the use, and improving the service quality.

Houghton, Lawrence Mitchell. "Piping plover population dynamics and effects of beach management practices on piping plovers at West Hampton Dunes and Westhampton Beach, New York." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28755.

Full text
Abstract:
In the early 1990's, a series of habitat changes caused by storms and subsequent beach management by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE, The Corps) provided a unique opportunity to study piping plover population dynamics in a changing environment. In this study, 1993-2004, we attempt to determine the factors that limit or influence the abundance and distribution of piping plovers in West Hampton Dunes (WHD), Long Island, NY, a renourished, highly developed, and high human disturbance area. The piping plover population on Westhampton Island increased after the hurricane of 1938, and declined thereafter. The decline co-occurred with beach development and vegetative succession. After storms in the winter of 1992-1993 breached the island at West Hampton Dunes, piping plovers re-colonized the area. The New York District USACE filled the breach in 1993, and renourished the beach in 1996 and 2000-2001. USACE renourished parts of the groinfield in Westhampton Beach in 1997. Each spring and summer, we monitored plovers intensively at WHD and part of the adjacent town of Westhampton Beach (The Reference Area) 1993-2004. We located nests and estimated reproductive and nest and chick survival rates. We monitored plover management efforts and determined causes of nest loss when possible. We monitored piping plover behaviors and obtained an index to plover food supply. We estimated area of plover habitats and defined areas unsuitable for piping plover nesting. We also obtained indices to human and predator presence on the beach. The WHD piping plover population increased from 0 pairs in 1992 to 39 in 2000 then decreased to 18 pairs in 2004. This decline was closely associated with changes in potential nesting habitat which increased from 22.4 ha in 1992 to 50.1 ha in 2000 then declined to 31.1 ha in 2004 The primary process regulating the WHD population appears to be density dependent immigration and emigration. No other vital rates (clutch size, renest rate, fertility, egg survival, nest survival, chick survival, brood survival, chicks fledged/pair) were correlated with density. The higher equilibrium density at WHD (~1 pair/ha) than at The Reference Area (~0.4 pair/ha) appeared to be a function of the large bay intertidal flats at WHD. The most common nest predators, cats (WHD = 13% of known predated nests), American Crows (17% of known predated nests) and foxes (37% of known predated nests), are newcomers to piping plover habitats. Thus, plovers may be especially vulnerable to them. Predator removal from the study area appeared to improve nest success and chick survival (R2 = 0.79). Predator exclosures at nests reduced nest loss (WHD = 34% exclosed nests lost vs. 43% of unexclosed nests lost, though in one year, one or more foxes learned to exploit plovers in exclosures (22% of all exclosed nests were predated by foxes in 1995). This study highlights the long suspected piping plover paradox: increasing beach width can temporarily raise the carrying capacity of an area, but preventing overwash can reduce or eliminate the natural formation of the bay side foraging flats that increase piping plover density, and sometimes, survival. Moreover, beach stabilization allows human development of the habitat which also reduces the carrying capacity of the environment for piping plovers, increases human/plover interactions, and attracts potential predators.

McDaid, Christopher L. "'The best accustomed house in town' : taverns as a reflection of elite consumer behavior in eighteenth-century Hampton and Elizabeth City County, Virginia." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28147.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how two mid-eighteenth-century tavern keepers in Hampton chose to mirror the consumer behaviors of the local elite in the manner that food and beverages were prepared and served in their taverns. In order to understand the consumer behavior of Elizabeth City County’s elite, fifty-four probate inventories from the 1760s were analyzed. The analysis focused on the material culture associated with dining, cooking, the consumption of alcohol, and the serving of the warm caffeinated beverages, tea, coffee and chocolate. Documentary and archaeological data indicated that social elites had adopted complicated behaviors associated with dining, cooking, drinking alcohol and serving warm caffeinated beverages. The complexity of quotidian behaviors noted in the archaeological and documentary data are explained by multiple factors. The first factor is the world-view or habitus of the gentry elite of colonial Virginia that was based on the competition for respect based on social status. The second factor was the increasing availability of consumer goods in mid-eighteenth-century Virginia which meant that individuals of less wealth and social status could acquire items that had previously been available only to the wealthy. The third factor was the transition from a social practice that privileged the age of status items to one that judged the fashionabilty of items and behaviors. The level of variety and diversity identified in the homes of the elite was observed in the materials excavated from the two taverns.

Abstract:
This thesis reconstructs John Rawl's Original Position in order to show that within a liberal democratic culture, the institution of punishment ought to conform to the Moral Education Theory of Punishment, put forth by Jean Hampton. According to Hampton, punishment should facilitate a medium where the state educates the criminal on the moral implications of her wrongdoing. I argue that citizens would select the Moral Education Theory of Punishment in the Original Position, since it offers the best opportunity to redress two calamities related to the criminal's wrongdoing---namely, that it threatens the moral status of the victim, and that it results from the wrongdoer's deficient moral sensibility. Upon consideration, the representatives in the Original Position recognize that redressing either of the two calamities necessitates redressing the other; thus, both objectives reinforce one another. Consequently, the representatives would unanimously select the principles of punishment manifest in the Moral Education Theory.

Herbert Morris argues in his influential retributivist paper, "Persons and Punishment," that criminals deserve punishment because their actions represent an unfair distribution of benefits and burdens in society. The proper distribution of benefits and burdens is important, in part, to restore law abiding citizens’ confidence that others will follow the law. In this paper I show that Morris's argument for why criminals deserve punishment morally requires us to set up an institution of rehabilitation in addition to the institution of punishment. Such an institution is morally required because neither pure punishment systems nor punishment systems that incorporate quasi-rehabilitative aspects have ever worked to uphold the necessary confidence that Morris tells us law abiding citizens must have in order to protect the social order. Moreover, we cannot abandon Morris's appeal to the duty to maintain social order without also abandoning a plausibly Morrisian framework.

Abstract:
Aloe mites are herbivores of the genus Aloe (ALOACEAE) and are associated with hyperplastic growth in various aloe species, but the biochemistry of this interaction is poorly understood. In an effort to characterize plant defense responses to herbivory in the genus Aloe, a salivary extract was isolated from aloe mites (Aceria aloinis Keifer) and its bioactivity was tested using a hypocotyl elongation assay. Subsequently, Aloe striata plants were treated with jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and the mite salivary extract. Using water and methanol, compounds of different polarity were extracted from aloe tissues that had been frozen and crushed at 4, 12, and 24h after treatment. Extracts were analyzed by HPLC and three compounds were found. One of these compounds was SA (mean concentration of 4µg/mL), and this is the first time that this aloe species has been found to produce SA. Two additional peaks of unknown identity were observed in JA- and SA-treated plants. These results suggest that A. striata may in fact undergo a JA-mediated change in secondary metabolism as part of a plant defense response.

Abstract:
The Diploma Thesis is divided into three sections. The first section describes the activities of the ILPS and characterizes closely the Study Centre in Prague -- Albertov and its courses. The second section deals with differences among cultures, according to Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner, and characterizes Czech culture and the cultures of participants of courses at Albertov. This section also includes a research study on the perception of Czech culture by foreign students and in-depth interviews with two representatives. The last section discusses the promotion of the Study Centre Albertov and proposes concrete ways on how to promote the 6-Week Intensive Czech Language Course and the summer course Czech Language and Culture.
