Abstract:
Abstract Between 1906 and 1911, Auguste Rodin sculpted more than fifty heads, masks, and busts of the Japanese actress Hanako. It was the largest number of portraits that he did with a single model. This essay explores the question why Rodin was so attracted to Hanako and, in particular, to her face. At the time Rodin was creating sculptures of Hanako’s head, the technique of the close-up was being adopted dramatically in filmmaking. Critics were shocked by the excessiveness of the close-up and tried to understand it in terms of ‘new realism’: the close-up modifies reality without eliminating the realness. This essay connects the theory of the close-up to the discourse of Japonisme.

Abstract:
In producing Chungmi Kim's eponymous Hanako (1999), the first Asian American play on the topic of “comfort women,” East West Players (EWP) provided a critical space for addressing this devastating chapter of Asian history and showing its relevance to communities in the United States. It also inadvertently launched the play on a ten-year transpacific journey as Comfort Women (2004) in New York and as Nabi (2005–9) throughout South Korea and Canada. Hanako dramatizes the intergenerational bonds between a Korean American university student, her grandmother, and Korean “comfort women” survivors who travel to New York to give their public testimonies. As the play develops, one learns that the grandmother has been repressing her own memories of enslavement as one of an estimated two hundred thousand young girls and women euphemistically called “comfort women” whom the Japanese Imperial military forced into sexually servicing its troops in the years leading up to and during World War II. Survivors kept their wartime experiences a secret from the public until the early 1990s, when a social movement for redress emerged in Asia. Over the past two and a half decades, activists and artists from around the world have joined survivors in their quest for justice. The recent agreement in 2015 between South Korea and Japan to “resolve” the “comfort women” issue sparked outcry from survivors and their supporters for its insincerity and inadequacy, further galvanizing the movement. Hanako and its afterlives as Comfort Women and Nabi are part of the transpacific culture of political activism and artistic expression that contends with the ongoing struggle over the history of “comfort women.”

Abstract:
Due to the expiration of a number of previously classified materials related to the activities of the Soviet special services during the Second World War, and also due to the especially high public interest in the “case of Richard Sorge” in the last 5 years, a military historian and Doctor of Historical Sciences Mikhail A. Alekseyev introduced into scientific discourse a large number of previously unknown Russian-language documents on this case. These documents are of paramount interest to researchers. For example, it is the first publication of the materials that definitively answer the questions of whether Sorge was a double agent and of what the real reason for the failure of the network of Soviet military intelligence in Japan in 1941 was, as well as of many other pieces of important documentary evidence of the activities of the Soviet secret services in that country.Soon after that, the authors of this article for the first time made a complete translation of the memoirs of Ishii Hanako, Sorge’s Japanese wife, which were analyzed in detail and commented on by the authors of the book Another Sorge. The Story of Ishii Hanako. The memoirs of Ishii Hanako give a chance to take a fresh look at Richard Sorge’s personality, his goals in studying Japan and his approaches to this issue, to form a more personal and, at the same time, objective picture of his character. Together with the case of the “Special Folder” of the Central Committee of the CPSU on perpetuating the memory of Richard Sorge, declassified in 2020, for the first time in history, these materials allow us to fully evaluate Ishii Hanako’s effort to preserve the memory of Sorge in Japan during the period from 1945 to 1964. By comparing the memoirs, the documents of the Soviet side, and by carrying out the research and analytical work, the authors have reached a new level of understanding of the “case of Richard Sorge.”In 2017–2022, a number of new materials devoted to the same case were published in Japan. They reveal the level of awareness of not only Japan’s government and law enforcement agencies, but also of the emperor himself, as well as the division of powers of the special services in the liquidation of Sorge’s intelligence network.

Full text
Abstract:
[…]||Abstract : This thesis examines the popularity of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables in Japan through the study of Hanako Muraoka's best-selling translation of the novel. More specifically, it first compares the Japanese translation of the novel with the original English version in light of translation theory -especially the work of Laurence Venuti- in an attempt to show what Japanese readers have been responding to. It then analyzes reader reception of the novel based on theory by Jane Tompkins as well as interviews and questionnaires predominantly with female readers, who form the chore of Anne readership in Japan. It looks at activities performed by Arme Clubs in Japan, then describes reader responses under the two following categories; aspects of the novel that strike chords in Japanese culture and how Arme's character and personality have had an impact. Finally, it examines how in Japan the novel can be perceived both as a symbol of domesticity and confirmation of traditional values as well as an inspiration towards female empowerment. Other reasons explaining the popularity of the novel in Japan are analyzed, such as the quality of Muraoka's translation and the appeal of the numerous nature descriptions to Japanese readers. In addition, the novel is used as a guidebook on a practical level in that it teaches about Western culture and lifestyle, and a philosophical level in that some readers try to emulate Arme's personality. The timing of the translation shortly after World War II has also contributed to a successful launch. Finally, commercial ventures featuring Arme, her presence in varions média, and popular culture have all helped promote the Canadian novel.

With three references - spinoza, husserl, proust - as starting points, this thesis undertakes to interpret the works of peter handke: the apprehension and true cognition of the real turn out to be its key-themes. Reality and language are determined in relation to non-reality and nonlanguage. This thesis emphasizes the phenomenological aspect of the approach of the real and establishes the handkean means to achieve it: writing, perception, walking, vacancy, reminiscence or, in other terms, re-calling of the past. Finally, the perceiving and cognizant subject experiences - through a sensation of plenitude - an existential and ontological feeling

Abstract:
The study about Peter Handkes theatre from 1964 to 1992 is an essay of interpretation inspired by the psychological ideas of C. G. Jung, concerning the evolution of the forms and subjects of his theatre. This approach makes it possible to analyse several aesthetic characters by questionning his conception of identity expressed by language and stuctures in his art of dramatic writing. Beginning with the early work ("Sprechstücke" - the "speak-plays") and continuing with the forms corresponding to tragedies and mysteries, his theatre appears, following the depth psychology, like an alchemical work in progress : the work of transformations

Abstract:
Electric power is essential for all industrial plant. All who use electric power desire a perfect frequency, voltage stability, and reliability all the time. But this cannot be realized in practice because of the many causes of a power supply disturbance that are beyond the control of the utility. Since the first criticality of the HANARO research reactor, the major reasons for reactor trips were system malfunctions and inexperienced operators in the initial stage of its operation. As HANARO is stabilizing, the power supply outage becomes the major reason for a reactor trip. This paper describes the status of power supply outages. This paper deals with not only the outages which have an effect on HANARO operation but also the reasons for the HANARO class 4 power outages. The analysis on the characteristics and the trends of the outages can provide clues to how the outages can be minimized and what the impact of the outages are on the operation.

Abstract:
Ageing means time-dependent changes of the quality and design characteristics having existed at the time of an approval, and ageing may occur during the operating time of a facility. The management of equipment begins with an awareness that ageing is not about how old the equipment is, but is about what is known about its condition, and the factors that influence the onset, evolution and mitigation of its degradation. HANARO, the open-tank-in-pool type research reactor with 30MW thermal power, achieved its first criticality in 1995. The reactor power has been gradually increased to the full power reached in June 2004. Many activities for an ageing management including improvement of the reactor systems were conducted during 13 years. The in-service inspection plans, for the reactor structure and the safety related piping designed as ASME safety category III, were established and carried out. The preventive maintenance for the primary cooling system including the pumps and heat exchangers, the electric system was also performed. The safety diagnosis and reinforcement for an effective life management and insurance of the safety of the building structures such as the reactor building, stack, secondary cooling system equipment room and cooling tower in HANARO were performed. The upgrade of the instrumentation and control system has been carried out gradually since 2001. This paper describes the conducted ageing management activities and long term ageing management plan of HANARO.

Abstract:
The diesel generator of HANARO provides Class III (standby) power during the loss of Class IV (off site) power events, for the important reactor system equipment such as the emergency water supply system, emergency ventilation system, etc. The HANARO has been stabilizing its operation since 1995, so the diesel generator failure data from 1995 to the end of 2002 has been collected. This study shows the failure-to-start probabilities and the failure-to-run probabilities of diesel generator within the 90% confidence bounds. Abstract:
HANARO, an open-tank-in-pool type research reactor of 30 MWth power in Korea, has been operating normally since its initial criticality in February, 1995. For the last ten years, HANARO has carried out ten years periodic in-service inspections (ISI as below) in accordance with Article IWD in ASME SEC. XI to verify the mechanical and structural integrities of the pressure retaining components of the safety related systems and the integral attachments of the supports and restraints of the components which are NPS 4 and above, to be within a specified boundary. This paper describes the results of the ISI including a system pressure test and a VT-3 visual inspection. From the results, it was confirmed through the ISI that the pressure retaining components and parts were stable to within the specified boundaries for their mechanical and structural integrities.

Full text
Abstract:
The Neutron Transmutation Doping (NTD) of silicon is a method to produce a high quality n-type semiconductor. The NTD technology makes it possible to dope a silicon ingot with an extremely uniform dopant distribution. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been providing the NTD service for 5 and 6 inch silicon ingots from 2003 and 2005 respectively at using HANARO. Coping with recent market demands for a silicon semiconductor by NTD, an additional irradiation facility which has a potential for the 8 inch silicon ingots was developed and the test irradiation is under way from the end of 2008. It is expected that a full scale production of 8 inch NTD-Si will be started from early 2009 and then the total capacity will be increased to 50 tons per year. This paper describes the general characteristics and operation of the NTD facility in HANARO.

Abstract:
We provide a toolkit for efficient online estimation of heterogeneous agent (HA) New Keynesian (NK) models based on Sequential Monte Carlo methods. We use this toolkit to compare the out-of-sample forecasting accuracy of a prominent HANK model, Bayer et al. (2022), to that of the representative agent (RA) NK model of Smets and Wouters (2007, SW). We find that HANK’s accuracy for real activity variables is notably inferior to that of SW. The results for consumption in particular are disappointing since the main difference between RANK and HANK is the replacement of the RA Euler equation with the aggregation of individual households’ consumption policy functions, which reflects inequality.
