Abstract:
In this essay I make an attempt to define the abilities that helped me in my antisocial choices that as a woman to become a decorator and throw me into the male construction industry. I use the metaphor of the wolf pack, which may symbolize hierarchies, norms, and even gender. What helped me to take my place among the males? Is it practical knowledge to deal with new antisocial environments, or what is it? I have not only survived, but also survived in the industry. In the pursuit of abilities and its knowledge of relevance, I analyse different stories from my 25 years in the profession and how I 've handled it encountered. These abilities I have then analysed on the basis of gender and Aristotle and Nussbaum's concept of knowledge, mainly Fronesis and various virtues. All in a try to see if it has to do with knowledge to survive in unfamiliar terrain.

Full text
Abstract:
[…]||Abstract : This thesis examines the popularity of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables in Japan through the study of Hanako Muraoka's best-selling translation of the novel. More specifically, it first compares the Japanese translation of the novel with the original English version in light of translation theory -especially the work of Laurence Venuti- in an attempt to show what Japanese readers have been responding to. It then analyzes reader reception of the novel based on theory by Jane Tompkins as well as interviews and questionnaires predominantly with female readers, who form the chore of Anne readership in Japan. It looks at activities performed by Arme Clubs in Japan, then describes reader responses under the two following categories; aspects of the novel that strike chords in Japanese culture and how Arme's character and personality have had an impact. Finally, it examines how in Japan the novel can be perceived both as a symbol of domesticity and confirmation of traditional values as well as an inspiration towards female empowerment. Other reasons explaining the popularity of the novel in Japan are analyzed, such as the quality of Muraoka's translation and the appeal of the numerous nature descriptions to Japanese readers. In addition, the novel is used as a guidebook on a practical level in that it teaches about Western culture and lifestyle, and a philosophical level in that some readers try to emulate Arme's personality. The timing of the translation shortly after World War II has also contributed to a successful launch. Finally, commercial ventures featuring Arme, her presence in varions média, and popular culture have all helped promote the Canadian novel.

The theatre director Borivoje Hanausca is an unavoidable figure in the study of the Serbian National Theatre (SNP) activities in the period after the Second World War. Hanausca directed thirty plays in the Serbian National Theatre from 1945-1967(with a break from 1948-1952). This study describes the work of the theatre director Borivoje Hanausca in the Serbian National Theatre being one of the most significant directors in it and in the best way presents his contribution to the development of directing in the Serbian post-war theatre. The research methods in this work are historical andtheatrical; reconstruction and analysis of all the thirty plays Hanausca directed in the Serbian National Theatre as well as the synthesis of the results that were obtained. This study includes each part of his work in his plays, on the basis of the material which was available. He considered every single detail of his plays important; he supported Serbian plays to be both present and heard from the stage as much as possible and he particularly took care of visual aspects. He is one of thecreators of the new approach to theatre play directing. Poetics he had deep within himself came out and was present, more or less, in his plays. This work is illustrated with posters and photographs from his plays and there is a list of all plays he directed and the names of all the people involved in the performances, the number of performances in the Serbian National Theatre and performed on tour, as well as the number of audiences.

Networks are now frequently used in biomedical science to represent different types of relationships between biological entities including genes, proteins, and chemical compounds and transcription factors. Network analysis is broadly applicable for elucidating molecular mechanisms of diseases and modeling fundamental biological processes. Cytoscape provides an open-source software platform for visualizing molecular interaction networks and biological pathways and integrating these networks with annotations. Although many Cytoscape plug-ins, such as ClueGO, have been developed to integrate the Gene Ontology annotation for biological function and network analysis, it still requires a lot of manual intervention and fine tuning to combine functional and molecular relations and generate an informative network drawing for biological understanding. Here, we have developed a Cytoscape plug-in to help biologists visualize the associated protein-protein interaction network of their interested genes, proteins, or other biological molecules in an automatically organized layout following their biological function classification. First, our plugin retrieved the GO biological process data of Homo sapiens from ClueGO, and automatically transformed the Ensembl ID, accession number into GO ID according to user-imported gene list, and calculated the statistical significance of enriched GO terms by Fisher’s exact test. The plugin also assessed the similarity scores between each enriched GO term to determine the most represented functions of the target network. Last, a layout algorithm was implemented to organize the network node in the order of top representative functions and draw the network accordingly in Cytoscape.

Rammutla, Chuene William Thabisha. "The "official" version of customary law vis-a-vis the "living" Hananwa family law." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/10614.

Full text
Abstract:
The study sought to determine, first, what the rules of the Hananwa family law were and, second, whether those rules were compatible with the Constitution. First, it documented the rules of the official family law. The problem that the study countenanced is that customary law is "corrupted, inauthentic and lacking authority".1 Second, it established and documented the rules of the Hananwa family law. The problem that the study countenanced in respect of Hananwa law was that it was difficult to ascertain the content of the rules of the "living" Hananwa law in order to determine their compatibility with the provisions of the Bill of Rights. Moreover, the traditional Hananwa community is inegalitarian and patriarchal. Section 9 of the Constitution provides that everyone is equal before the law and enjoys equal and full protection and benefit of the law. The study found that the Hananwas still observe their system of customary law. However, there are visible changes. For instance, nowadays the spousal consent is a validity requirement for all customary marriages. A parent or legal guardian must consent to a customary marriage of a minor. The individual spouses, not their families, are parties to their own customary marriages. African women enjoy equal status. This development is consistent with section 9 of the Constitution read with section 6 of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act 120 of 1998. According to the Constitutional Court, in MM v MN and Another 2013 4 SA 415 (CC), the first wife must consent to her husband's customary marriage to another woman in addition to her customary marriage to him. However, some rules of the Hananwa law do not comply with the provisions of the Bill of Rights. For instance, according to the Hananwa law, extramarital children do not enjoy equal inheritance rights and maintenance rights yet. This discrimination is inconsistent with the constitutional right to equality and the provisions of the Reform of Customary Laws of Succession and Regulations of Related Matters Act 11 of 2009.The Constitution puts common law and customary law on a par. However, the courts have often replaced customary law dispute resolution rules with the common law rules. For instance, the Constitutional Court in Bhe and Others v Magistrate, Khayelitsha and Others; Shibi v Sithole and South African Human Rights Commission and Another v President of the Republic of South Africa and Another 2005 1 SA 580 (CC) and the High Court in Maluleke v Minister of Home Affairs 2008 JDR 0426 (W) substituted the rules of common law for those of customary law in order to resolve customary law disputes. The legislature could not be outdone. A meticulous study of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act 120 of 1998 and the Reform of Customary Laws of Succession and Regulations of Related Matters Act 11 of 2009 reveals that their provisions almost appropriately reflect the common law marriage and intestate succession rules respectively. The Recognition of Customary Marriages Act has, furthermore, adopted the provisions of the Divorce Act of 1979. Section 28 of the Constitution read with the Children's Act 38 of 2005 has generally substituted the fundamental human rights for the unequal rights provided by the customary law of parent and child. The Maintenance Act 99 of 1998 has substituted the communal form of maintenance under customary law.

Om hierdie beleid van afsonderlike ontwikkeling suksesvol toe te pas, was daar vanaf die regering van die The various pre-colonial societies of southern Africa emerged in a recognizable modern form during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when they were 'frozen' in their identities by colonial intervention. The relationships that developed with time between these societies and the colonial powers, were largely based upon perceptions and attitudes that developed since the 17th, 18th and especially the 19th centuries as a result of this contact. This latter process has been described as a process of historical imaging. In this thesis, the background to these pre-colonial societies is given and the historical development of one such society is discussed as a relevant example. The relationships that resulted locally because of this process of colonial intervention eventually gave rise to a policy of separate development, the implementation of which over a period of close to 50 years largely contributed to the creation of the identity of this particular society. As prerequisite for this policy to be successful, four aims that had to be successfully implemented were identified by the government of the day. This was done by means of legislation, persuasion and manipulation. The first aim was the development of a separate political system for black people, by which they could 'independently' govern themselves in the 'states' that were to be created for them. Secondly, for this political mechanism to work, it was necessary to establish a separate area or 'state', where the black people could live and govern themselves. The political power created for them could only be used within the v boundaries of these states. Furthermore, these states would also serve to separate whites and black people from each other. Thirdly, for this policy to work, it was necessary to develop a strategy for the economic survival of the people in these states. As the areas set aside for them were totally inadequate, a number of strategies were developed for their economic survival - on the one hand by the authorities and on the other hand by the inhabitants of these areas themselves. The last aim was to unite all the inhabitants within each of these states into one group. It was therefore tried to establish an identity or image for all the inhabitants of each of these areas. This strategy was largely based on ethnic principles, with particular emphasis on the differences between the various groups. This process of the construction of identity is discussed with reference to a specific society, known as the Hananwa, a Northern-Sotho-speaking people living in the west of the Northern Province. Amongst the Hananwa, this 'construction process' was not one-sided and they took an active part in it as it suited their particular need at a specific time. The research strategy was based on a multi-disciplinary approach that employed mainly anthropological methods, but also included archaeological and historical methodology.

The use of Taiwanese dialect in the mass media has been more and more frequent and widespread. Its appearance in newspapers, advertisements, television, films, etc., has made the Taiwanese dialect become a language of the mass media. Although the Taiwanese dialect film has been going through a period of stagnation, Taiwanese dialect has nevertheless become a language of television translation. The purpose of this thesis is to examine translation of the film Hanada Shōnenshi. In the first place, it aims to understand how Taiwanese dialect developed into a language of the mass media and to explain the situation of its usage in film translation. Further, the thesis aspires to analyze whether the application of Taiwanese in translation of the film Hanada Shōnenshi conforms to the principles of film translation and whether it reaches the effects of film translation communication. Film translation can be divided in subtitle and dubbing translation. I have used the concept of communication as a basis to examine the film translation communication, to investigate the role and tasks of interpreter in the translation process and to introduce the functions, limitations and main principles of subtitling and dubbing. I analyzed and compared the Taiwanese dialect language material in Chinese subtitle and Taiwanese dubbing translation of the Japanese film Hanada Shōnenshi, and induced the dubbing translation strategy of Taiwanese to explain whether the usage of subtitling and dubbing into Taiwanese in the film corresponds to film translation principles and whether it reaches the effects of film translation communication. With this research, I wish to contribute to the discussion on film translation, which will later hopefully serve as a reference material for film translators and researchers on related subject.

The animated TV show on the history of Hanada Ichiro is based on a 1970s rural Japanese story. In Taiwan, it was dubbed into Taiwanese and the program was so popular that it received much attention and acclaim. However, it was derived from comics that are analyzed in this study. The narration and style as well as the emotion and growth of Hanada Ichiro were all researched. Based on the story pattern, narrative structure and framework the three narrative forms: flashback, sound imagination and framework/connection are discussed. The four narrative styles such as rhapsody of the little guy, comedy performance/exaggerated feeling, strong distinction and horrible performance were also studied. The abundant feelings include love between family members, lovers, friends and animals that are described in the study. Moreover, the relevant characteristics were reviewed in order to understand the emotions between people. According to Joseph Campbell’s theory of the monomyth, the emotional transformation of Hanada Ichiro to his family members, his fuzzy sexual consciousness experienced with his first love as well as his growth in each period are also examined. The researcher found that Hanada Ichiro was a naughty boy and experienced all kinds of emotional entanglements. After a two-year adventure, his growth can be clearly seen from his attitude and behavior to his family members and his girlfriend. Dirty words and caricatures were the narrative skills the author used on purpose to portray the personality of Hanada Ichiro. The nude and corpse are common techniques used in comedy. His emotions and growth were described in detail. The author emphasized the truth of the emotion and believed that the growth of children is anticipated as a moral standard in society, so that all feelings can be expected.

This study was designed to explore teenagers’ interpretation of gender ideology in animation. A text analysis of teenagers’ favorite animation was undertaken for gender ideology. Based on the result of the text analysis, nineteen teenagers were interviewed to find out their interpretations of gender ideology in the animation. The findings are as follows: 1. There are five gender ideologies in animated text. First, the gender stereotypes of women ought to possess the femininity and men must own the masculinity. Second, the gender division of men fit to be placed in work but women fit to be placed in family. Third, the gender hierarchy of“men are superior to women”in family and profession. Fourth, the masculine female and the feminine male always get an unkind treatment because of sexism. Fifth, the gender interaction myth includes the male-centered belief, the stereotype of women love the rich and using negative way to describe the premarital pregnancy. This shows that the text adopts the traditional viewpoint to explain the gender ideologies. 2. The teenagers’ interpretation of gender ideology in the text is influenced by their existing gender stereotypes, personal life experience, and cognition of gender equality. This reveals that teenagers are not passive audience in reading the massages within the text. On the contrary, they are likely to be active audience. 3. The male teenagers tend to support the dominant interpretation. This represents that they not only stand an advantageous position but also accept and repeat the main ideologies and values. The female teenagers tend to support the negotiated or oppositional interpretation. This means that they accept the main ideologies conditionally, beside, they also bring up the different viewpoint to resist the main ideologies.
