Abstract:
This research examines the depiction of normative women in the Edo period (1603-1868) in the novel entitled Hanaoka Seishu no Tsuma (1966) by Ariyoshi Sawako, a Japanese female writer in the post World War II Showa era. Reflecting on the novel’s normative female characters, it analyzes the silenced voices of women. It will contribute to the discussion on how the normative female figures criticizing the patriarchal hegemony that has not been revealed in the literary canon of the Edo period. This research shows how normative women characters are presented in the text as a feminine strategy to criticize this hegemony. The researchers use feminist criticism theory from Butler’s gender performativity (1990). The study concludes that although normative women characters are commonly represented as men dominating women, those can also be used to criticize the patriarchal hegemony.

Research into the process of photosynthesis could benefit a range of areas - from increasing output from agriculture and developing stress resistant crops, to the design of solar panels and solar energy harvesting technology. In order to develop our understanding of this process, the study of photosynthesis needs to focus on the chloroplast - the cellular compartments where photosynthesis takes place. Professor Mitsumasa Hanaoka, from the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Functions in the Department of Applied Biological Chemistry, Graduate School of Horticulture at Chiba University, is exploring how plants coordinate messages between the nucleus and chloroplasts responsible for optimised photosynthesis.

Abstract:
Abstract Immune mechanism is considered to exert in the pathogenesis of marrow failure in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), idiopathic aplastic anemia (AA) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS); however, the molecular events are unknown. We have currently reported the appearance of NKG2D ligands such as cytomegalovirus glycoprotein UL16 binding proteins (ULBPs) and MHC class I-related chains A and B (MICA/B) on granulocytes and CD34+ marrow cells of some patients with PNH and its related diseases (Hanaoka N, et al. Blood. 2006;107:1184–1191). ULBP and MICA/B are stress-inducible membrane proteins that appear in infection and transformation. The ligands share NKG2D receptor on lymphocytes such as NK, CD8+ T, and γδ T-cells and promote activation of the lymphocytes. Cells expressing the ligands are then deadly injured by NKG2D+ lymphocytes (Groh, PNAS 1996; Cosman, Immunity 2001). Indeed, cells expressing NKG2D ligands were killed in vitro by autologous NKG2D+ lymphocytes of our patients (Hanaoka N, et al. Blood. 2005;106:304a; Blood. 2006;108:295a). In further analysis, ligands were detected on granulocytes in 47 (53%) of 88 patients: 11 (58%) of 19 PNH, 28 (60%) of 47 AA, and 8 (36%) of 22 refractory anemia. Ligands were also detected on immature bone marrow cells in all 11 patients (3 PNH, 5 AA, and 3 refractory anemia) who permitted analysis of their marrow cells. In the patients, it is conceivable that blood cells were exposed to a certain stress to induce NKG2D ligands, leading to NKG2D-mediated marrow injury. We also observed a close association of the ligand expression with pancytopenia and favorable response to immunosuppressive therapy by prospective analysis of 5 patients (3 AA-PNH syndrome and 2 AA) for more than one year up to 5 years. Thus, we here propose that NKG2D-mediated immunity, which drives both NK and T-cells, is critically implicated in the pathogenesis of bone marrow failure of PNH and its related disorders.

Every language in many countries has its own uniqueness to express wish. In Indonesian, the word “ingin” means want to, or wish to. But in Japanese, there are two classes of word, both have meaning of want or wish. They are jodoushi「~たい」and keiyoushi「ほしい」. These two classes of word usually people find when learning Japanese, especially when reading Japanese comics for children. Therefore, in order to be able to differ the use of those two classes of word and the use of their sentences pattern, as well as the analysis, this research uses Doraemon vol.25-35. As for analyzing all the data, the use of theories from Tomita Takayuki, Seichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui, Naomi Hanaoka McGloin, and also Fumiko Koide will suit them respectively.

ABSTRACT This paper summarizes the potential use of a fine-grained fetal facial scoring system. The use of this coding system is discussed in relation to maternal health as well as effects on fetal development, including smoking in pregnancy and maternal stress. It is argued that the proposed fine-grained movement analysis might lend itself to support an increase health behaviors. Furthermore, we suggest that the fine-grained movement coding, although labor intensive, might detect subtle but important differences in fetal development, which are missed by more general observations. Finally, advantages and disadvantages of this system are discussed. How to cite this article Reissland N, Austen JM, Hanaoka U, AboEllail MAM, Uematsu R, Hata T. Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present the latest HDlive studies of fetal development and behavior during pregnancy. Marked changes of embryonic and fetal development and movement with advancing gestation were noted in the first trimester of pregnancy. Various realistic facial expressions (or facial movements) were recognized in the second and third trimesters. In particular, blinking, mouthing, swallowing, yawning, tongue expulsion, and sucking were clearly depicted. Moreover, various extraordinarily realistic features of fetal emotion-like behavior were identified. HDlive observation of fetal behavior and facial expressions may reflect the normal and abnormal neurological development of the fetus. HDlive may become an important modality in future research on fetal neurobehavioral development and assist in evaluation of the fetal brain function. ABSTRACT We present the latest HDlive echocardiographic studies on the fetal heart using spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC). Fetal HDlive echocardiography with the use of new skin-like colors provides sonographers and physicians with a natural and anatomically realistic appearance of the fetal heart. Moreover, HDlive images provide entirely new visual experiences for obstetricians and pediatric cardiologists owing to the anatomically realistic depiction of the normal fetal heart and fetal congenital anomalies in utero. This novel technique may assist in the evaluation of the fetal cardiac anatomy, and offer potential advantages relative to conventional two-, three-, and four-dimensional fetal echocardiography. “- An anaesthetic is a frightening adventure into the unknown over which a patient can exert no control, and few can meet this type of ordeal with equanimity”1. British Medical Journal, 1964. Prior to the discovery of anaesthesia, medication before surgery was the only way of diminishing the patient's suffering. In 1682, George Wedel, Professor of Medicine at Jena, suggested that opium could be given to a patient prior to an amputation so that he “… bears the burning and cutting of the limb with a readier spirit”2. Alcohol was often recommended for the same reason3. In 1805, Seishu Hanaoka, a Japanese surgeon, administered a potent oral mixture of alkaloids, largely from the Datura stramonium plant, to a woman for a mastectomy4. He called this mixture Tsusensan, successfully using it on many patients: it produced hours of complete unconsciousness – long before Morton demonstrated the effect of ether.

ABSTRACT ‘Observation of fetal behavior reflects the functioning of the central nervous system, and behavioral assessment of the fetus enables the function of the brain to be examined’.1 The introduction of four-dimensional (4D) sonography techniques would facilitate fetal behavioral assessment in three dimensions in real time during pregnancy. We describe the latest 4D sonographic studies on fetal neurobehavior in all three trimesters of pregnancy. 4D sonography also facilitated the evaluation of interhuman contact and intrapair stimulation in twin pregnancies in utero. This novel technique may assist in the evaluation of fetal neurobehavior and intertwin contact and intrapair stimulation and offer potential advantages relative to conventional two-dimensional sonography. 4D sonography may become an important modality in future research on fetal neurobehavioral development and the prenatal identification of severely brain-damaged infants. ABSTRACT We present the latest HDlive images of uterine and adnexal tumors. Evaluation of these tumors with conventional twodimensional (2D) sonography has been the standard procedure for morphologic assessment, but the introduction of threedimensional (3D), power Doppler and other recent modalities has been of great help in providing more specific details, especially in characterizing malignancy. HDlive is the latest ultrasound modality that enhances 3D and four-dimensional images. Several different gynecologic tumors were assessed using HDlive in this study. HDlive can provide realistic features of the inner surfaces and contents of tumors which are very similar to the gross specimens. An accurate characterization of gynecologic tumors is important when deciding on clinical management options. Therefore, HDlive may be a valuable tool in adjunct to other imaging modalities to achieve an accurate preoperative diagnosis. Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present our first experience of constructing an image of a fetal endocardial cushion defect (ECD) employing HDlive at 21 weeks and 3 days of gestation. Conventional two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography showed an atrioventricular septal defect, bilateral ventricular hypertrophy and massive pericardial effusion. Two-dimensional color Doppler ultrasound revealed atrioventricular valve regurgitation in systole. HDlive clearly demonstrated a glossy atrial septal defect, common atrioventricular valve and bilateral ventricular hypertrophy. Moreover, free, floating leaflets of the common atrioventricular valve not attached to the interventricular septum were suspected using HDlive. These findings suggested complete ECD with congestive heart failure. HDlive provided us with a new, realistic, and arguably much improved view of the complexities and interrelationships of intracardiac structures in a case of fetal ECD. HDlive may assist in the evaluation of fetal EDC, and offer potential advantages relative to conventional 2D fetal echocardiography. ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate the effect of parity on fetal behavior between primi- and multiparas. Materials and methods Fetal behavior was assesed by Kurjak's antenatal neurodevelopmental test (KANET) using four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation. Forty-four primiparous and 61 multiparous women were studied. The total value of the KANET score and values of each parameter (8 parameters) were compared Results The total KANET score was normal in both groups except for in only one case in the multiparous group (total KANET score of 9), and there was no significant difference in the total KANET score. When individual KANET parameters were compared, we found a significant difference in only one fetal movement, isolated eye blinking, between fetuses of primiparas (median, 2; range, 0–2) and multiparas (median, 1; range, 0–2) (p < 0.040). No significant differences were noted in the other seven parameters. Conclusion Our results suggest that the level of relaxation of pregnant women may affect fetal behavior, particularly the rate of eye blinking. A relaxed state of primiparas may promote the maturation of the fetal brain, especially the central dopamine system function How to cite this article Hata T, Hanaoka U, AboEllail MAM, Uematsu R, Noguchi J, Kusaka T, Kurjak A. Abstract:
AbstractAfter a little more than forty years of work related to the interplanetary plasma and the heliosphere the IAU's Commission 49 was formally discontinued in 2015. The commission started its work when the first spacecraft were launched to measure the solar wind in–situ away from Earth orbit, both inward and outward from 1 AU. It now hands over its activities to a new commission during an era of space research when Voyager 1 measures in–situ the parameters of the local interstellar medium at the edge of the heliosphere. The commission will be succeeded by C.E3 with a similar area of responsibility but with more focused specific tasks that the community intends to address during the coming several years. This report includes a short description of the motivation for this commission and of the historical context. It then describes work from 2012 to 2015 during the present solar cycle 24 that has been the weakest in the space era so far. It gave rise to a large number of studies on solar energetic particles and cosmic rays. Other studies addressed e.g. the variation of the solar wind structure and energetic particle fluxes on long time scales, the detection of dust in the solar wind and the Voyager measurements at the edge of the heliosphere. The research is based on measurements from spacecraft that are at present operational and motivated by the upcoming Solar Probe + and Solar Orbiter missions to explore the vicinity of the Sun. We also report here the progress on new and planned radio instruments and their importance for heliospheric studies. Abstract:
Abstract Although it has been suggested that paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), idiopathic aplastic anemia (AA), and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) share immune-mediated bone marrow injury, the molecular events in the injury is still unclear. Currently we have shown that leukemic K562 cells became less sensitive to natural killer (NK) cells in vitro when the leukemic cells acquired PIG-A mutations (Nagakura S et al, Blood2002; 100: 1031–1037). The decreased sensitivity was explained by a deficiency of stress-inducible and GPI-linked membrane proteins ULBP (Hanaoka N et al, Blood2004; 104: 774a). In general, the exposure of ULBP on cell membrane leads to activation of both NK and T cells expressing NKG2D, a receptor for ULBP. It is then conceivable that the ULBP-NKG2D engagement causes blood cell injury. In support of this idea, we detected both ULBP-expressing (ULBP+) blood cells (granulocytes or marrow cells) in 9 of 17 (53%) patients with PNH and killing of granulocytes of 4 the 9 patients by autologous lymphocytes. Granulocytes of healthy donors were negative for ULBP and intact in the killing assay. ULBP+ granulocytes were further detected in 24 of 45 (53%) patients with AA, and 10 of 21 (48%) patients with MDS, whereas ULBP+ granulocytes were detected in neither patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia nor those with drug-induced marrow injury. Our study suggests not only that there was pathogenic stress to induce ULBP on blood cell membrane but also that the ULBP-NKG2D engagement was implicated in the pathogenesis of marrow failure, at least in a part, of patients with PNH and its related disorders. We thus propose that membrane ULBP would be of potential probe for the diagnosis of immune-mediated marrow injury and the evaluation of its treatment.

Abstract:
Abstract Bone marrow failure syndromes (BFS) including aplastic anemia (AA), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) are considered to harbor immune-mediated marrow injury. Indeed, immunosuppressive therapy (IST) with antithymocyte globulin and cyclosporine ameliorates the hematopoiesis in BFS patients, despite its limit: infrequent relapse of marrow failure after IST, resistance of some patients to IST, and untoward effects like infection. To overcome the difficulties, molecular targeted therapy is alternative. However, neither incitement of marrow injury nor target molecules on marrow cells recognized by cytotoxic lymphocytes has been identified. We have currently suggested that NKG2D ligands such as ULBP and MICA/B serve as triggers for immune-mediated marrow injury in PNH (Hanaoka, Blood2006;107:1184). ULBP and MICA/B are stress-inducible membrane proteins that appear in infection and transformation. The ligands share NKG2D receptor on lymphocytes such as NK, CD8+ T, and γδ T cells and promote activation of the lymphocytes. Cells expressing the ligands are then deadly injured by NKG2D+ cells (Groh, PNAS USA 1996; Cosman, Immunity 2001). In this background, we attempted to confirm the clinical significance of the expression of NKG2D ligands in BFS. The ligands were detected by flow cytometry on the granulocytes and marrow cells in 47 (53%) of 89 patients with BFS: 28 (56%) of 50 patients with AA; 11 (65%) of 17 patients with PNH; 8 (36%) of 22 patients with MDS; and none of 17 healthy individuals. The membrane expression of the ligands was supported by their increase in plasma. It is then conceivable that blood cells were exposed to a certain stress to induce NKG2D ligands in the patients, leading to NKG2D-mediated marrow injury. There was a close association of the expression of NKG2D ligands with both progression of marrow failure and favorable response to IST. Thus, we propose that the NKG2D ligands not only are feasible predictors for both immune-mediated marrow injury and IST effects, but also serve for potential targeted therapy in BFS.

Abstract:
Sigambra hanaokai (Kitamori 1960), originally described from Japan, was regarded as a junior synonym of S. tentaculata (Treadwell 1941), described from the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean. We studied Japanese materials and compared them with a recent redescription of S. tentaculata and with S. phuketensis Licher and Westheide, 1997, another similar species. The validity of S. hanaokai is confirmed. In order to avoid any further confusion, we redescribe the species based on topotype specimens collected in Hiroshima, Seto Inland Sea, Japan, the type locality of the species. Additionally, we emphasize the differences between S. hanaokai and S. phuketensis, particularly in regard to the relative length of the median antenna. Lastly, we summarize the recent systematic status of all species of the genus, and provide a table summarizing taxonomic characters.

Abstract:
Objectives: To explore users’ views of, and experience with, the Here and Now Aboriginal Assessment (HANAA), an instrument developed for screening social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) in Aboriginal adults. Over the last few years the HANAA has been widely disseminated across Australia. Methods: All those on our database who had requested the HANAA package were contacted by email and invited to participate in the evaluation by completing an online survey. Results: A total of 38 responses were received; the response rate was 36%. All 10 HANAA domains were highly rated by respondents; the overall mean score was 8.3/10. Each domain was assessed using a dichotomous scale of ‘problem’ or ‘no problem’ which respondents rated as being very useful; the mean score was 8.4/10. The mean score for the ‘recommendation’ section at the end of the HANAA was 7.2/10. Conclusions: Respondents reported a high level of utility and cultural applicability of the HANAA’s assessment domains, semi-structured narrative style of administration and simple rating system. The HANAA is making a useful and practical contribution to the assessment of Aboriginal SEWB at a community level. Recommendations for future work on the HANAA include consideration of addition of a personality domain and development of a child and adolescent version.

Abstract Those who are involved in developing language curriculum in The Arab World face usually a challenging barrier related to texts selection. They are still in need of clear and justifiable criteria that may help them select and organize texts. In this article, I review critically Hanada Taha’s Text Leveling System (HTLS), the first Arabic attempt that addresses this issue. Developed by Hanada Taha, the system provides a procedural framework which will help us in selecting and organizing Arabic texts.
