Abstract:
This chapter elaborates on the connections between oneness, moral agency, and spontaneity by distinguishing between two general kinds of spontaneity: untutored spontaneity, which is characteristic of traditions such as Daoism, and cultivated spontaneity, representative of traditions such as Confucianism. This discussion intersects with oneness on the matter of “metaphysical comfort,” the sense of oneness, harmony, and happiness that one experiences when acting or reacting spontaneously, on either the untutored or cultivated model. Daoists argued quite plausibly that this experience goes hand in hand with certain kinds of untutored spontaneity, but an important objective of the chapter is to show that even cultivated spontaneity can provide the same comfort. The chapter makes the case that both forms of spontaneity are familiar, though largely unrecognized, in all forms of human life and that the descriptions provided, inspired by early Chinese philosophy, offer important theoretical resources for philosophy today.

Abstract:
Palliative medicine was first recognized as a specialist field in the United Kingdom in 1987. One hundred years earlier, the London-based doctor William Munk had published a treatise on ‘easeful death’ that mapped out the principles of practical, spiritual, and medical support at the end of life. In the intervening years a major process of development took place, which led to innovative services, new approaches to the study and relief of pain and other distressing symptoms, a growing interest in ‘holistic’ care for those with advanced disease, and a desire to gain more recognition for end-of-life care. This book traces the history of palliative medicine, from its nineteenth-century origins, to its modern practice around the world today. It takes in the changing meaning of ‘euthanasia’; assesses the role of religious and philanthropic organizations in the creation of homes for the dying; and explores how twentieth-century doctors created a special focus on the care of those for whom cure or recovery is not possible. To Comfort Always traces the rise of clinical studies, academic programmes, and international collaborations to promote palliative care. It examines the continuing need to provide evidence in support of development and assesses the dilemmas of unequal access to services and pain-relieving drugs, as well as the periodic accusations of creeping medicalization within the field. The first history of its kind, it concludes with some reflections on the achievements of palliative medicine to date and the challenges that remain.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter traces the path of Henry Mancini's career, highlighting the reasons why he became the first publicly successful and personally recognizable film composer in history. It suggests that Mancini was perfectly placed, by time and temperament, to be a bridge between the traditions of the big band period of World War II and the eclectic impatience of the baby boomer generation that followed, between the big formal orchestral film scores of Hollywood's so-called Golden Years and a modern American minimalist approach. On the one hand, his respect for pre-wartime pop and movie music represented continuity, even advocacy, of tradition. On the other hand, for many young postwar families, the Mancini sound seemed to represent the bright, confident, welcoming voice of a new middle-class life: interested in pop songs and jazz, in movies and television, in outreach politics but also conventional stay-at-home comfort.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 integrates the adaptive strategies outlined in previous chapters and presents tables that small-handed pianists can use to diagnose and resolve commonly encountered problems. These tables focus on broad categories where obstacles encountered by pianists with small hands can be found—chords, arpeggios, leaps, octaves, broken intervals, legato, and voicing. The tables outline solutions drawn from throughout the book, thus integrating a variety of approaches to each problem. The effectiveness of these tools in a particular context should be evaluated on the basis of sound, comfort, reliability, and ease of execution. Examples from the intermediate and advanced piano literature are used to demonstrate a synthesized approach to problem solving.

Abstract:
Philosophy of art began, for European cultures, with Plato's criticism of theatre and Aristotle's account of tragedy; modern philosophical discussion of the arts has been less oriented to theatre, which has generally been submerged in the broader topics of literature and fiction and, most recently, obscured by the rising interest in film. This article explains what theatre is threadbare. Theatre has become increasingly hard to define; traditional theories allowed theatre to melt into literature, while ideas that were new in the twentieth century shattered the comfort of what was thought to be the Aristotelian model and demanded that thinkers about theatre recognize the unique implications of theatre in religion, politics, and the life of community.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the 1980s, a market-oriented decade that marked the demise of managerial capitalism. Entrepreneurial ability became more highly prized than managerial competence, and, primarily due to increased takeover activity, a managerial comfort zone from which public company executives had benefitted was substantially eroded. During “the Deal Decade” takeover bids, most conspicuously ones launched by flamboyant corporate “raiders,” provided executives eager to forestall an unwelcome approach with a potent incentive to bolster shareholder returns. Deregulation and liberalized access to capital simultaneously expanded the discretion available to public company executives and intensified competitive pressure on large firms formerly insulated by substantial barriers to entry.

Wallace, Dewey D. Bunyan’s Theology and Religious Context. Edited by Michael Davies and W. R. Owens. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199581306.013.5.

Abstract:
Familiarity with the theology of John Bunyan is important for the interpretation of his literary classics. That theology was Reformed, or Calvinist, focused on soteriology, and shaped by Bunyan’s search for faith and his experience in a Dissenting congregation on the borderline between Baptists and Independents. At its heart was an emphasis on the forgiveness of sins by a divine grace given without conditions, which Bunyan thought had been offered in the gospel to the worst of sinners, among whom he included himself. He articulated his theology through a scheme of covenants and an order of salvation that had already been developed as central components of Calvinism. The doctrine of predestination lurked in the background of his writings, but did not preclude his summons to conversion and a holy life. Bunyan laboured to bring well-grounded comfort and assurance of salvation to his readers and hearers.

Abstract:
This chapter describes linking spirituality and Advanced Care Planning (ACP); fear and ACP; how thinking about death changes people; religious views of ACP; denial and ACP; personal control and ACP; ethical principles and ACP; the spiritual work of ACP, including objective asessment; adaptation and ACP; and ritual, sacrament, and ACP. The discussion holds that dying is not primarily a medical event. The process of thinking about end-of-life issues can significantly impact on an individual’s attitudes, values, and belief systems. Dying patients can challenge the cultural illusion that life is going to last forever. This can be hard for families and professionals to accept and challenges their own fears around mortality. The importance and wisdom of religious rituals and religious symbolism cannot be ignored even in the most secular of contexts as they bring comfort to many. ACP is about life before death and can foster resilience and hope.

Abstract:
Pain occurs in up to 70% of cancer patients and it can be challenging to manage. The standard for analgesic therapy is the World Health Organization ladder; however, up to 25% of patients don’t reach a level of comfort using this approach. Ketamine has been recognized as an excellent adjuvant for cancer pain treatment, especially when other analgesics have failed. Some randomized clinical trials have confirmed ketamine’s efficacy in refractory cancer pain, but most had small sample sizes and low power. Some publications have confirmed the beneficial effect of oral, intranasal, subcutaneous, or intravenous ketamine in treatment of refractory chronic cancer pain, while others are less conclusive. While ketamine is rapidly gaining ground as an adjuvant in treating pain in patients with cancers refractory to conventional therapy and/or patients with opioid tolerance, care should be taken to identify patients with ketamine contraindications in order to offer the greatest benefit with the lowest risk of side effects.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the practical difficulties which the cardinals’ and the pope’s lesser officials faced in conducting the election. Agreed rules for the conclave developed only slowly during the later Middle Ages but by the sixteenth century they were already widely flouted. The change in routine and the deprivation of normal comforts were stressful for many elderly cardinals and exposed them to a heightened risk of infectious disease. The high stakes of the decision meant that attempts at bribery and at communication with the outside world were hard to eradicate; and also that the cardinals and others present occasionally felt the consequences of the tensions conclaves generated. The chapter argues that the cardinals never found a solution to these problems, but adhered to the conclave as an institution because a cardinal’s vote was the source of his personal power.

Abstract:
Emmanuel Levinas’s ethical philosophy has had a significant influence on film theory in recent years. This book proposes a relationship between Levinasian ethics and film style. It argues that films can convey Levinasian ethics not just through their subject matter but also through their use of style. The book brings this relationship between ethics and style into a productive dialogue with theories of performativity, such as J. L. Austin’s speech-act theory, Jacques Derrida’s notion of originary performativity and Judith Butler’s reconfiguration of performativity within the socio-political sphere. It explores Levinas’s influence on film through the study of three directorial bodies of work: those of the Dardenne brothers, Barbet Schroeder and Paul Schrader. The book focuses on a range of films, including the Dardennes’ Je Pense à Vous (1992), La Promesse (1996), Le Fils (2002) and The Kid with a Bike (2011), Schroeder’s Maîtresse (1975), Reversal of Fortune (1990), Terror’s Advocate (2007) and Our Lady of the Assassins (2000) and Schrader’s American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), The Comfort of Strangers (1990), Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005) and Adam Resurrected (2008). In doing so, it demonstrates how films can perform a Levinasian ethics through different styles.

Abstract:
Mirsad Hadžkadić never planned for a life in politics. Yet, in 2018, he decided to run for the Bosniak presidential council seat in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mirsad made the life-changing decision to run, despite the fact that he had a successful, thirty-year career as a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and very little experience in politics outside of academia. However, a conversation with a dear friend from Sarajevo planted the idea in his mind. Samir Avdaković suggested that he run for office because “there may never be another election in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the country as we know it will probably disintegrate.” The words rumbled within Mirsad’s mind for the next several months, and he thought to himself, “if what Samir says is so, who am I, because of the comforts I have, to decide not to even try?” After announcing his intentions on national TV in January of 2018, Mirsad began this journey in earnest in May of 2018 by building a campaign from the ground up with the hope of instilling a vision of hope and change and shifting the country’s political discourse. However, he soon learned that the odds were stacked against him. He only had five months and limited funds to prove to the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina that he deserved their votes. And so, he took his meager funds, limited time, and infinite passion to do just that. He toured the country, meeting and talking with citizens, to share his vision of hope and change. Though Mirsad was not victorious on October 7th, his results were deemed historic and unprecedented. A relatively unknown, underfunded independent candidate managed to receive 60,000 votes or ten percent of the total votes cast. And, despite the defeat, Mirsad succeeded in spearheading a democratic movement, resulting in the formation of the Platform for Progress political organization in November of 2018 and the official dawning of The Odyssey for Democracy.

McMichael, Anthony. Climate Change and the Health of Nations. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190262952.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
When we think of "climate change," we think of man-made global warming, caused by greenhouse gas emissions. But natural climate change has occurred throughout human history, and populations have had to adapt to the climate's vicissitudes. Anthony J. McMichael, a renowned epidemiologist and a pioneer in the field of how human health relates to climate change, is the ideal person to tell this story. Climate Change and the Health of Nations shows how the natural environment has vast direct and indirect repercussions for human health and welfare. McMichael takes us on a tour of human history through the lens of major transformations in climate. From the very beginning of our species some five million years ago, human biology has evolved in response to cooling temperatures, new food sources, and changing geography. As societies began to form, they too adapted in relation to their environments, most notably with the development of agriculture eleven thousand years ago. Agricultural civilization was a Faustian bargain, however: the prosperity and comfort that an agrarian society provides relies on the assumption that the environment will largely remain stable. Indeed, for agriculture to succeed, environmental conditions must be just right, which McMichael refers to as the "Goldilocks phenomenon." Global warming is disrupting this balance, just as other climate-related upheavals have tested human societies throughout history. As McMichael shows, the break-up of the Roman Empire, the bubonic Plague of Justinian, and the mysterious collapse of Mayan civilization all have roots in climate change. Why devote so much analysis to the past, when the daunting future of climate change is already here? Because the story of mankindâs previous survival in the face of an unpredictable and unstable climate, and of the terrible toll that climate change can take, could not be more important as we face the realities of a warming planet. This sweeping magnum opus is not only a rigorous, innovative, and fascinating exploration of how the climate affects the human condition, but also an urgent call to recognize our species' utter reliance on the earth as it is.
