Abstract:
Virtual reality offers new tools for human motion understanding. Several applications have been widely used in teleoperation, military training, driving and flying simulators, and so forth. We propose to test if virtual reality is a valid training tool for the game of handball. We focused on the duel between a handball goalkeeper and a thrower. To this end, we defined a pilot experiment divided into two steps: an experiment with real subjects and another one with virtual throwers. The throwers' motions were captured in order to animate their avatar in a reality center. In this paper, we focused on the evaluation of presence when a goalkeeper is confronting these avatars. To this end, we compared the goalkeeper's gestures in the real and in the virtual experiment to determine if virtual reality engendered the same movements for the same throw. Our results show that gestures did not differ between the real and virtual environment. As a consequence, we can say that the virtual environment offered enough realism to initiate natural gestures. Moreover, as in real games, we observed the goalkeeper's anticipation to allow us to use virtual reality in future work as a way to understand the goalkeeper and thrower interactions. The main originality of this work was to measure presence in a sporting application with new evaluation methods based on motion capture.

Abstract:
Handball performance is a team-sport characterized by high intensity efforts interspersed with recovery periods. Due to high demands of handball performance, the use of ergogenic aids is a common strategy of handball players with the aim of enhancing handball performance, to allow more effective training, and to increase the rate of recovery. Although the use of ergogenic aids is generalized in the whole spectrum of competitive handball (e.g., from recreational to professional players), only a few ergogenic aids have been investigated to test their effectiveness to increase handball performance. In addition, no previous study has summarized the scientific literature on this topic to determine the ergogenic aids with good level of evidence regarding their effectiveness to increase handball physical performance. Thus, the aim of this narrative review was to describe the prevalence in the use of ergogenic aids in handball players and to analyse this information to identify which of these substances may increase physical performance in an intermittent sport such as competitive handball.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The act of communication plays an important role in all aspects of social life and is an inevitable link in the normal functioning of sports organizations. Therefore, the research theme aims to explore how communication is viewed in the game of handball, highlighting the main problems encountered. The purpose of the study is to analyze communication problems within handball teams. Communication has always represented a fundamental element in the game of handball, but nowadays it is much more important, due to the fact that society is characterized by a continuous diversification of cognitive domains and the effective involvement of the act of communication in all activities carried out. Therefore, it is well known that handball is the basis of the physical and mental development of young athletes, which should be a sign created by healthy individuals, so communication within handball teams can greatly influence the achievement of these young people athletes, developing their image and sport, especially increasing the efficiency of the handball game. Thus, communication is a fundamental condition in handball, for the instructional process to be carried out under appropriate conditions, communication being what constitutes the bond that holds together the members of a handball team.

Abstract:
Although it is advocated that end-users are engaged in developing evidence-based injury prevention training to enhance the implementation, this rarely happens. The ‘Implementing injury Prevention training ROutines in TEams and Clubs in youth Team handball (I-PROTECT)’ uses an ecological participatory design incorporating the perspectives of multiple stakeholders throughout the project. Within the I-PROTECT project, the current study aimed to describe the development of holistic injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players through using knowledge from both end-users (coaches and players) and researchers/handball experts. Employing action evaluation within participatory action research, the cyclical development process included three phases: research team preparation, handball expert-based preparation and end-user evaluation to develop injury prevention training incorporating both physical and psychological perspectives. To grow the knowledge of the interdisciplinary research team, rethinking was conducted within and between phases based on participants’ contributions. Researchers and end-users cocreated examples of handball-specific exercises, including injury prevention physical principles (movement technique for upper and lower extremities, respectively, and muscle strength) combined with psychological aspects (increase end-user motivation, task focus and body awareness) to integrate into warm-up and skills training within handball practice. A cyclical development process that engaged researchers/handball experts and end-users to cocreate evidence-based, theory-informed and context-specific injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players generated a first pilot version of exercises including physical principles combined with psychological aspects to be integrated within handball practice.

IANNACCONE, Alice. "PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF BEACH HANDBALL." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Cassino, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11580/84783.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this project was the evaluation of performance of beach handball players. Beach handball is considered a high-intensity mixed-metabolism sport where the performance depends on the combination of high-intensity physical patterns at player and team level. The player performances depend on specific movements involving speed and power, rapid accelerations and decelerations, and changes of directions, whereas the overall team performance depends on technical and tactical team performance indicators, such as passing, catching, throwing, and blocking during offensive and defensive situations. The first part of this dissertation aimed to examine the differences between male and female players during shooting actions occurring during semifinal and final phases of a European Beach Handball Tournament by means of notational analysis. For the study 9 matches were analyzed. Overall, 559 (males: 353; females: 206) shots were observed; 54.7±9.4% were successful and 19.9±7.1% were saved by goalkeepers. No difference for gender emerged. Results showed that notational analysis represents a valuable tool to examine many aspects of shooting actions such as the shooting technique, the shooting area, the area of the goal to which the shots end in relation to players and goalkeepers’ efficiencies. To improve players’ performances and to understand the level of adaptation to a given training program and minimizing the risk of non-functional overreaching, monitoring players’ load plays a fundamental role. For this purpose, the second part of this dissertation focused on the investigation of internal (assessed using objective and subjective methods) and external loads experienced by youth male beach handball players during training sessions and competitions. Thirteen players from the Lithuanian U17 beach handball team were monitored across 2 training camps (14 training sessions) and during the Younger Age Category 17 European Beach Handball tournament where players were involved in 7 matches. For the external load inertial movement units devices units were used while the internal load was objectively recorded by means of heart rate (HR) monitors. After each session, the HR data were exported, and the individual workload was calculated according to the summated HR zones (SHRZ) method. Furthermore, the internal load was subjectively assessed by means of Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale by asking each player “How hard was your training/Match?” 30 min after the completion of the session. Successively, the session RPE (sRPE) workload was calculated by multiplying the individual RPE score for the duration of each session. Subjective perception of internal load experienced by youth beach handball players increases with the objective internal load. However, the increase varies between players and sessions. In addition, results showed that external load variables (PlayerLoadTM, accelerations, low intensity events, medium intensity events, high intensity events, jumps, and changes of directions) showed a strong correlation with sRPE and SHRZ. The variable with the highest relationship and predictive capability, with both SHRZ and sRPE, was PlayerLoadTM. Further investigation should examine any potential difference in players of different ages and explore the influence of other contextual factors such as the match outcome or the individual players’ fatigue.

Abstract:
Network analysis is used in a number of different fields to study systems ranging from molecular interactions to social interactions between humans. With the increase of available data, it is not surprising that network analysis methods are now used to analyze human behavior and interactions in sports. Handball is a popular sport in Europe, and while it has been studied, it has not been studied with network methods. In this work, passing data was collected from two international competitions to study the passing behavior of the Norwegian women’s handball team. The data were divided into multiple scenarios to try to explore how the team’s and individual players' playing styles depended on whether the team was leading, trailing, or scoring goals. Star players were also compared with their replacements to see if there was any statistical evidence available as to why the star players may be unique. We found differences between the star players and their replacements, some differences between the team’s passing behavior when leading and trailing and when scoring goals, and that the team appears to have a specific prescribed playing style for each position.

Abstract:
Penalty-taking performance in handball within a self-regulatory focus framework was examined. In a two-independent group design, regulatory framings (either promotion or prevention) were given to participants (N = 25) prior to penalty-taking. More precisely, Swedish male (n = 15) and female (n = 10) players of the third male and second female Swedish Leagues were randomly allocated to shoot three penalties each under either a promotion-framed (n = 13; Mage = 20.77, SD = 3.77 years) or a prevention-framed (n = 12; Mage = 19.25, SD = 2.09 years) condition. Positive and negative affect were measured to assess pre-performance emotional states. Findings showed that promotion–focused individuals performed better in a promotion– framed penalty (i.e. fit) than in a prevention–framed (i.e. mismatch). Moreover, when in regulatory fit, pre-performance positive emotions were reported to be greater than when in mismatch. Findings are discussed in terms of role of fit and emotional states in pressureperformance critical situations.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to (1) examine throughout the season dynamics of the handball team's performance and related factors (i.e. emphasizing leadership, emotions and concentration) as perceived by the coach and the captain. The analysis was used to motivate the emotions being studied in objective two (2) examine the handball team during successful and less successful games in terms of the dynamics of the players’ emotions, concentration and performance between two halves of the game and after time-outs. Informants for objective 1, was the team coach and the team captain. Objective 2 of the study consisted of 15 women all playing in the same team. The study includes longitudinal data over a ten game period containing five successful and five less successful games. Data was collected after games using the ECPP(H) developed by Olausson and Vallmark-Jansson (2013). In-depth narrative interviews were used. Three analyses were made: (1) sjuzet- fabula, (2) holistic- content and (3) categorical-content analysis. Poetic representation was used to present parts of the results. The results showed shifts in the dynamics of performance, possible explanation to the shift of dynamics of emotions, concentration and performance and different types of leadership styles demonstrated throughout the season. Furthermore, similarities and diversities were found between the coach and captain’s perceptions of the season in focus. Finally, practical team-specific applications are suggested, such as working with emotional control in order to help the team enhance their performance.

Abstract:
A first study gives handball throwing specificities with regards to other overarm throwings. For this, the kinematic and the dynamic analyses of three groups of handball throwers from different level have been driven. During handball throwing, the humeral external rotation is lower, the horizontal adduction of the arm is earlier and its linear velocity are singular. A second study gives the links between the performance parameters and the biomechanical parameters of the movement. Two different kinds of throw appear. The subjects who have the lower ball velocities have a greater humeral rotation but less efficient. This is due to a different mechanism used to induce this rotation. For this subjects, the horizontal adduction is principally used. The kinematic simulation of handball throwing has been made thanks to the modelling obtained by the kinematic analysis of handball throwing. This kinematic simulation has been used for other studies equally relative to handball

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Modern handball is characterized by high motor activity and high intensity of game actions, requiring the player to mobilize his physical, mental, and technical-tactical abilities to the limit. Naturally, this is possible only by maintaining a high level of conditioning abilities, which find external expression in the form of various movements. Objective - The present work is to investigate the relationship between some anthropometric parameters and conditioning abilities of adolescent handball players. The contingent of the study are 11-12-year-old handball players who participated in handball groups at HC “Lokomotiv” Gorna Oryahovitsa. Mathematical and statistical methods - variation and correlation analysis. The analysis of the obtained results for the anthropometric parameters of 11-12-year-old handball players shows that the individual units and segments are relatively uniform. This is due to the selection, as well as the development of the child’s organism. The established level of special motor fitness shows that the studied group is homogeneous in terms of the measured fitness indicators. The presence of certain fluctuations in the handball throw and 800 y ball tests is due to the still un-strengthened musculoskeletal system and the level of technical training.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the correlation of body composition with motor abilities of female handball players. The sample of respondents consisted of 18 female handball players with an average chronological age of 20.22 ± 4.67 years, with average sports experience of 9.56 ± 3.93 years. First, the respondents' body composition parameters were measured (body height, body mass, body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat, percentage of muscle and daily metabolism), followed by tests of speed (sprint at 10m, 20m and 30m), agility (Agility T-test, Illinois and Change of direction and acceleration Test (CODAT)) and explosive strength (Counter Movement Jump (CMJ), Counter Movement Jump With Arm Swing (CMJwas) and Squat Jump (SJ)). Based on the results obtained in this study, it could be concluded that there was no statistically significant correlation of any body composition parameter with the motor abilities of female handball players. Also, no statistically significant difference was found in the motor abilities of underweight, overweight and normal female handball players. Therefore, it can be concluded that despite different values of body composition, all handball players achieved similar results of motor abilities.

Abstract:
The conducted research is aimed at assessing the training of handball players due to age and playing roles with an orientation to such characteristics of elite (model) athletes. Long-term handball lessons, selection in the process of preparation for certain playing roles from the age of 12-13 have a significant impact in long-term training on the formation of morphofunctional and psychomotor features of adaptation to the body of players. In handball, reliably significant indicators for the whole team, as a rule, are primarily due to the growth and weight indicators of physical development, the ability of basic physical qualities and psychomotor abilities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Picking out and selection are the most essential elements of the multistructural system of sports training. With their help, a clear assessment is obtained, which determines the genetic talents of the athletes, who are directly dependent on the discovery of their game potential and the achievement of high sports results. That is why we set ourselves the goal to optimize the process of sports orientation and selection in handball, by revealing the peculiarities of physical development and their specific training. 22 handball players aged 17-18 from the youth national team of Bulgaria at a training camp in the town of Gabrovo were studied. Competitors passed sports and pedagogical testing on 12 indicators, of which 6 for anthropometry and 6 for sports and technical training. The data was statistically processed with the program SPSS 21, variation analysis was applied. For handball, anthropometric indicators of height, weight, and limb length are essential. Based on the research, we can say that there is potential in the selection of young handball players. In sports practice, good knowledge of physical development and motor skills allows sports professionals to properly and accurately plan and implement the training process over time.
