Abstract:
Virtual reality offers new tools for human motion understanding. Several applications have been widely used in teleoperation, military training, driving and flying simulators, and so forth. We propose to test if virtual reality is a valid training tool for the game of handball. We focused on the duel between a handball goalkeeper and a thrower. To this end, we defined a pilot experiment divided into two steps: an experiment with real subjects and another one with virtual throwers. The throwers' motions were captured in order to animate their avatar in a reality center. In this paper, we focused on the evaluation of presence when a goalkeeper is confronting these avatars. To this end, we compared the goalkeeper's gestures in the real and in the virtual experiment to determine if virtual reality engendered the same movements for the same throw. Our results show that gestures did not differ between the real and virtual environment. As a consequence, we can say that the virtual environment offered enough realism to initiate natural gestures. Moreover, as in real games, we observed the goalkeeper's anticipation to allow us to use virtual reality in future work as a way to understand the goalkeeper and thrower interactions. The main originality of this work was to measure presence in a sporting application with new evaluation methods based on motion capture.

Abstract:
Handball performance is a team-sport characterized by high intensity efforts interspersed with recovery periods. Due to high demands of handball performance, the use of ergogenic aids is a common strategy of handball players with the aim of enhancing handball performance, to allow more effective training, and to increase the rate of recovery. Although the use of ergogenic aids is generalized in the whole spectrum of competitive handball (e.g., from recreational to professional players), only a few ergogenic aids have been investigated to test their effectiveness to increase handball performance. In addition, no previous study has summarized the scientific literature on this topic to determine the ergogenic aids with good level of evidence regarding their effectiveness to increase handball physical performance. Thus, the aim of this narrative review was to describe the prevalence in the use of ergogenic aids in handball players and to analyse this information to identify which of these substances may increase physical performance in an intermittent sport such as competitive handball.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The act of communication plays an important role in all aspects of social life and is an inevitable link in the normal functioning of sports organizations. Therefore, the research theme aims to explore how communication is viewed in the game of handball, highlighting the main problems encountered. The purpose of the study is to analyze communication problems within handball teams. Communication has always represented a fundamental element in the game of handball, but nowadays it is much more important, due to the fact that society is characterized by a continuous diversification of cognitive domains and the effective involvement of the act of communication in all activities carried out. Therefore, it is well known that handball is the basis of the physical and mental development of young athletes, which should be a sign created by healthy individuals, so communication within handball teams can greatly influence the achievement of these young people athletes, developing their image and sport, especially increasing the efficiency of the handball game. Thus, communication is a fundamental condition in handball, for the instructional process to be carried out under appropriate conditions, communication being what constitutes the bond that holds together the members of a handball team.

Abstract:
Although it is advocated that end-users are engaged in developing evidence-based injury prevention training to enhance the implementation, this rarely happens. The ‘Implementing injury Prevention training ROutines in TEams and Clubs in youth Team handball (I-PROTECT)’ uses an ecological participatory design incorporating the perspectives of multiple stakeholders throughout the project. Within the I-PROTECT project, the current study aimed to describe the development of holistic injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players through using knowledge from both end-users (coaches and players) and researchers/handball experts. Employing action evaluation within participatory action research, the cyclical development process included three phases: research team preparation, handball expert-based preparation and end-user evaluation to develop injury prevention training incorporating both physical and psychological perspectives. To grow the knowledge of the interdisciplinary research team, rethinking was conducted within and between phases based on participants’ contributions. Researchers and end-users cocreated examples of handball-specific exercises, including injury prevention physical principles (movement technique for upper and lower extremities, respectively, and muscle strength) combined with psychological aspects (increase end-user motivation, task focus and body awareness) to integrate into warm-up and skills training within handball practice. A cyclical development process that engaged researchers/handball experts and end-users to cocreate evidence-based, theory-informed and context-specific injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players generated a first pilot version of exercises including physical principles combined with psychological aspects to be integrated within handball practice.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the conception of the term’s “skill” and “tactic” by handball and beach handball coaches. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 coaches (17 from school teams, seven from regional handball leagues; and five from beach handball), and the analysis was based on the thematic analysis. Three themes and six sub-themes were identified, and revealed conceptual confusions between the terms "skill" and "tactic" in the coaches’ speeches. Only the coaches of school handball teams highlighted the topic of effectiveness when defining technique, while the other groups of coaches (beach handball and handball leagues) emphasized only the dimension of efficiency. These results reveal a neglect of the adaptive and effective potential of skill. The coaches corroborated the theoretical framework when defining the term “tactic”, but attributed other meanings that are not adequate, such as treating strategic and tactical aspects as synonyms. These conceptual misunderstandings can lead to methodological implications due to the terms treated being presented as a matrix of the main teaching approaches.

Shooting is among the most important elements of the handball game that determine the success of the result. The aim of this research was to examine the impact of explosive strength on the shot speed of handball players. The sample of participants consisted of 20 handball players, aged 18 to 30 ± 0.3 years. The sample of measuring instruments consisted of five variables for evaluating explosive strength and four variables for evaluating shot speed in handball. The impact of explosive strength on shot speed in handball was determined using linear regression analysis. The results showed that the space of explosive strength is dominantly defined by the vertical jump test (VJ), while the latent space of shot speed is defined by the variable of jump shot with direct arm swing (SSD). Applying linear regression confirms that there is a statistically significant impact of explosive strength on shot speed in handball.

Abstract:
Handball is a game sport that combines a high level of physical psychological preparedness and technical and tactical skill. The first great successes come to players after 1-12 years of systematic preparation. The most talented young handball players from youth begin to move to the teams of men's clubs, and then join the ranks of the national team, while others, having received injuries, say goodbye to handball. The purpose of the study is to determine the nature of injuries to handball players aged 18-20 years, to identify the main types of injuries to handball players of different ages and playing positions. The data obtained suggest insufficient physical and technical-tactical readiness of handball players under 20 years old for the intense conditions of major international competitions. In turn, this makes it possible to develop effective means of preventing injuries in the early stages of long-term training.

AbstractHandball (team handball) is a multifactorial sport. The aims of this study were (i) to analyse anthropometric variables, conditioning abilities, and handball skills in club handball players according to age and sex, and (ii) to develop multivariate models explaining club handball performance from a multidimensional perspective. Two hundred and twenty six handball players (age 16.9 ± 4.0 years, 54% males) participated in the study. The players belonged to under-14, under-16, under-19, and A teams. They were evaluated with a battery of 18 tests covering kinanthropometry, conditioning abilities, and handball skills. A one-way ANOVA with a Bonferroni post-hoc test was used to investigate differences between teams, and a t-test for differences between the sexes. For each team, a discriminant analysis was performed to determine differences between performance levels. The results showed little differences between the U19 and A teams in any of the variables studied in either men or women, and that the lowest values corresponded to the U14 team. The differences according to sex were clear in the kinanthropometric and conditioning variables, but much less so in handball skills. The eight multivariate models that were constructed classified successfully from 48.5 to 100% of the sample using at most three variables (except for the women's A team whose model selected six variables). Conditioning variables were most discriminating in men, and handball skills in women. This would seem to reflect the different performance profiles.

Abstract:
Abstract The current article presents a qualitative study of Danish television viewer’s reception of Danish handball transmissions. The overall aim of the study has been to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of televised sport as a specific kind of television entertainment. The analysis shows that, due to the dramaturgic structure of handball transmissions, viewers consider such transmissions particularly reliable and effective sources of entertainment. The transmissions’ entertainment value derives from their specific ability to give the viewers a complex experience of feeling autonomous and competent when mastering the game and in relation to others. The study shows that entertainment concerns both affective involvement and identity formation, as social and cultural meaning seem to be at the root of involvement. Even though both men and women find great joy in the transmissions, their viewing is embedded in quite diverse patterns regarding additional media use. This points to gendered differences regarding how the entertaining experience is basically received and the qualities sought and pursued in the transmissions.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between handball playing and refereeing experience and referee self-efficacy as well as to investigate the differences in self-efficacy between international and national handball referees. Handball referees were conveniently selected during the 18th Asian Men’s Handball Championship 2018 and the 2017-2018 Kuwaiti Handball League. Participants completed an in person demographic information questionnaire as well as the 13-item Referee Self-Efficacy Scale (REFS) (Myers, Feltz, Guillén, & Dithurbide, 2012) which assesses Game Knowledge (GK), Decision making (DM), Pressure (PR), and Communication (CM). There were significant positive correlations for all Referee Self-Efficacy Scale dimensions with years of refereeing experience. Past playing experience was correlated with DM. Number of officiated matches in the last 12 months were significantly correlated with DM and CM. International referees were significantly more confident in their decision making; in dealing with pressure; and in their communication abilities. Expertise as an effective factor for enhancing self-efficacy was confirmed and referees should focus on developing technical, physical, and psychological skills in order to achieve superiority in refereeing. Self-efficacy can be used to differentiate expert from less-experienced handball referees

Abstract:
In football or soccer, a referee controls the game based on the set rules. The decisions made by the referee are final and can’t be appealed. Some of the decisions, especially after a handball event, whether to award a penalty kick or a yellow/red card can greatly affect the final results of a game. It is therefore necessary that the referee does not make an error. The objective is therefore to create a system that can accurately recognize such events and make the correct decision. This study chose handball, an event that occurs in a football game (Not to be confused with the game of Handball). We define a handball event using object detection and robotic perception and decide whether it is intentional or not. Intention recognition is a robotic perception of emotion recognition. To define handball, we trained a model to detect the hand and ball which are primary objects. We then determined the intention using gaze recognition and finally combined the results to recognize a handball event. On our dataset, the results of the hand and the ball object detection were 96% and 100% respectively. With the gaze recognition at 100%, if all objects were recognized, then the intention and handball event recognition were at 100%.

Abstract:
AbstractRecent studies have revealed that sport activity is a protective factor regarding smoking, but a risk factor for alcohol abuse. Considering these findings, it is necessary to investigate the occurrence of substance misuse. Sports that are associated with a substantial amount of physical/mental stress are very interesting from the perspective of substance misuse (e.g., handball). This research was performed to more closely study the population engaged in handball regarding the risk for alcohol and/or tobacco consumption. The sample of respondents consisted of 150 senior handball players who were members of 9 first-league handball clubs from Croatia and abroad. The respondents were grouped into sub-samples according to sex, age, experience, the number of weekly training sessions and their social environment (clubs). Alcohol consumption data were obtained using the AUDIT questionnaire. The differences between groups were tested using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. The study revealed that handball players engaged in alcohol misuse, and they were grouped in the harmful drinking category (AUDIT score, 16-19 for all groups). Regarding tobacco product consumption, the risk groups were women (who smoked significantly more than men, MWU test: Z = 3.30. p < 0.001), handball players with less experience (who smoked significantly more than experienced players, MWU test: Z = 3.68, p < 0.001). Borderline significance was observed for the impact made by social environments, and age was not a significant predictor of tobacco consumption. Regarding alcohol consumption, the highest hazard group were national handball players, who drank much more than foreign players did (MWU test: Z = 2.04, p = 0.04); however, sex, age, experience and training habits were not alcohol consumption predictors in handball. This study reveal that the typical behaviors regarding alcohol and tobacco consumption followed by the general population do not apply to handball players. Targeted prevention can be much more precisely established considering this research.

Abstract:
We investigated the anthropometric characteristics associated with specific handball skills in competition. The body anthropometric profiles differ significantly among the playing positions in handball due to the specific tasks. The aim of this study is to identify the anthropometric patterns for each playing position by collecting data from elite male handball players. To determine the anthropometric profile of the elite handball players for each playing position, we used descriptive statistics for every indicator in order to identify the optimal patterns for elite handball players from the top-four ranked teams at the most important competitions over a period of 18 years (2004–2021). Over time, the anthropometric indices evolved: the average height increased (from 190 to 192.6 cm) but less than weight increased (from 90.5 to 95.28 kg), and these affected the body mass index (increase from 25.2 to 25.67). The novelty of our study is that we identified an anthropometric pattern for each playing position and for all teams in elite male handball. Our study also covered a period of 18 years to give our results more accuracy and reliability.

AbstractTeam handball is a fast high-scoring indoor contact sport with > 20 million registered players who are organized in > 150 federations worldwide. The combination of complex and unique biomechanics of handball throwing, permitted body tackles and blocks, and illegal fouls contribute to team handball ranging among the four athletic sports that carry the highest risks of injury. The categories include a broad range of acute and overuse injuries that most commonly occur in the shoulder, knee, and ankle. In concert with sports medicine, physicians, surgeons, physical therapists, and radiologists consult in the care of handball players through the appropriate use and expert interpretations of radiography, ultrasonography, CT, and MRI studies to facilitate diagnosis, characterization, and healing of a broad spectrum of acute, complex, concomitant, chronic, and overuse injuries. This article is based on published data and the author team's cumulative experience in playing and caring for handball players in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain. The article reviews and illustrates the spectrum of common handball injuries and highlights the contributions of sports imaging for diagnosis and management.

Abstract:
Sports officials have recently received some attention in the academic literature. The aim of the present study was to examine sources of perceived psychological stress among certified Greek team handball referees. For this purpose, participants evaluated the intensity of 17 acutely stressful game situations on two occasions within a period of seven months. To explore the factor structure of the Handball Officials Sources of Stress Survey, 84 team handball officials completed the questionnaire. The analysis yielded a 4-factor structure (Evaluation, Fear of Physical Harm, Interpersonal Conflicts, and Fear of Appearing Incompetent), which accounted for 70% of the total variance. Age, education, rank, and years of experience as a handball player were unrelated to the referees' scores on the survey. To confirm the factor structure, 93 handball officials completed the survey seven months later. A confirmatory factor analysis supported the factorial structure of the scale. Sources and intensity of stress for handball referees are comparable to those identified in previous studies of referees' stress in other team sports.

Abstract:
In team handball, suitable tests determining the match-related physical performance are essential for the planning of optimal physical training regimens. Thus, the aims of the present study were (a) to determine the relationships between the physical and physiological test results from a team handball game-based performance test (GBPT), the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test, level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1 test) and a separate linear 30-m single sprint performance test (SSPT) in female adult top-elite field team handball players, in order to establish the significance (validity) of tests for measuring relevant elements for team handball match-play; and (b) to compare and evaluate the results from the aforementioned tests for the same players in relation to the different playing positions. Twenty-three female adult top-elite field team handball players from the Danish Premier Female Team Handball League performed the GBPT, the Yo-Yo IR1 test and the 30-m SSPT test on separate days. As main findings, significant correlations between the GBPT and the Yo-Yo IR1 test in about 1/3 of the variables were found, indicating that the Yo-Yo IR1 test is reflecting most of the locomotive match activities in female adult top-elite team handball. However, the Yo-Yo IR1 test results were not correlated to the GBPT in any of the match-related activities in the team handball GBPT that included technical playing actions such as tackles, passes, jumping and shooting during specialized movements in offence and defence. Overall, the results revealed that the GBPT is better than the Yo-Yo IR1 test to evaluate female adult top-elite field team handball players’ ability to perform physical match-related activities including both locomotive and technical playing actions executed as during competitive match-play. Similar to the Yo-Yo IR1 test, the 30-m SSPT was not correlated to any of the team handball GBPT activities, which included technical playing actions. These data suggest that the SSPT only to a certain extent can measure the individual sprint capacity of elite team handball players. In addition, unexpectedly no significant differences between the various playing positions were found neither for the GBPT, the SSPT nor the Yo-Yo IR1 test. However, several effects sizes indicated that the lack of positional differences primarily was due to the relatively small sample size in each playing position and the composition of the specific group of players. In conclusion, this study clearly indicated that team handball specific physical performance, as measured by the GBPT, and general physical performance, as measured by the Yo-Yo IR1 test and the 30-m SSPT, are different components. This must be taken in consideration when using physical test results for the planning of optimal physical training regimens in elite team handball.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of interval training at four different intensities in addition to handball training for 8 weeks on aerobic-anaerobic, speed and agility pa-rameters in female handball players. Twenty female handball players (experimental group: 10; control group: 10) voluntarily participated in the studyThe experimental group trained in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) 3 days a week for 8 weeks in addition to handball training, while the control group was allowed to continue their standard training program. The anaerobic capacity, speed, and agility of the experimental and control groups were measured twice before and after an 8-week training program. The HIIT training program for the experimental group was adapted to the movements most commonly used in handball. The values of the data obtained from the handball players were analyzed. ANOVA for mixed measures was applied to determine the difference between the pre-test and post-test values of the experimental and control groups. There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the pre and post-test values of the 20-m sprint test of the experimental and control groups of HIIT training for handball players, while there was no statistically significant difference between the pre and post-test values of the anaerobic capacity and agility test of HIIT training. In conclusion, it is recommended to include HIIT training in the training periodization of handball players during the season, and it is believed that it will have a positive effect on players' speed performance.

Sport performance in handball requires a cumulative amount of individual and collective factors that contribute to achieve the goals. The aim of this study is to contribute to the theory of the somatic model of top team handball players. The basic working method is a retrospective and descriptive analysis of the anthropometric indices of the players that participated in handball top competitions (European Championship, World Championship, Olympic Games). The data were collected and processed on the playing posts but also on the total of the top 4 teams. The monitored and analysed indicators are: height, weight, body mass index and height -100 / weight ratio. These data are a benchmark for updating the somatic model in the top female handball players, with implications up to the level of primary selection to ensure the base of handball from which top players will be raised.

Abstract:
A large number of published studies have established the somatotype characteristics of athletes from different sports. The research goal is to establish and compare the anthropometric characteristics, body composition, and somatotype components of Kosovo’s young elite athletes. The research was conducted on 255 young athletes aged 18, divided into 92 footballers, 83 basket players, and 80 handball players. The obtained results show numerous relations and differences between the tested young athletes. The research results suggest that footballers are shorter and lighter than basketball and handball players; have lower BMI than handball players. Handball players are shorter than basketball players, and have greater BMI than basketball players and footballers. Footballers, compared to handball players have a greater bone-component and less fat-component percentage. Basketball players possess greater bone-component percentage values than handball players. Footballers have a dominant mesomorph component. Their somatotype category is balanced mesomorph. Handball players are established to have a common mesomorph athletic type with a characteristic skeleton’s longitudinal dimension. The ectomorph body type is dominant in basketball players – a mesomorph- body type with a characteristic skeleton’s longitudinal dimension and balanced correlation between the bone and muscle tissue. Therefore, these findings may give coaches from the region better working knowledge and suggest to them to follow recent selection process methods and be more diligent during the process of talent scouting.

Abstract Identifying the anthropometric measures of successful and less successful handball players may be helpful in developing a talent identification and development model, allowing for the determination of key physical capacities required for elite performance. The purpose of the study was to describe the anthropometric characteristics, including age, standing stature, body mass and body mass index (BMI) in handball players who participated in the 2013 Men's Handball World Championships. Secondly, the objective was to identify the possible differences in these parameters in terms of individual playing positions (goalkeeper, back, center back, wing, line player). Rosters with handball player's age, standing stature, and body mass were obtained from the International Handball Federation website. The research material included 409 handball players (24 teams). National teams were organized by their ranks and sub-grouped using their continents and playing positions. The results of the analyses of variance demonstrated significant differences in age (F=2.30; p=0.044; Partial ŋ2=0.028), standing stature (F=14.02; p=0.0001; Partial ŋ2=0.148), and body mass (F=5.88; p=0.0001; Partial ŋ2=0.068) among the groups (G1-G6). Players in G1 had the highest standing stature and body mass, while players in G6 had the lowest age and body mass values. The backs and line players were the tallest. In addition, the measurement of body mass showed that the line players had the highest body mass and BMI values. In conclusion, this study presented anthropometric data that differentiated levels of success in male handball teams playing in the 2013 world championships. This information should serve as a reference for the average standing stature, body mass, and BMI of handball players for particular positions at the professional level.

Abstract:
The sport of handball is an intense game that is carried out over a long duration of two rounds, each of which runs for 30 minutes. A good VO2max condition is very important for every player to have in order to support performance during training and matches. This study aims to examine the application of circuit training methods to improving physical conditions, especially VO2max levels, in handball athletes. The circuit training method is considered an effective approach to improving athletes' endurance and fitness. This research is a type of experiment that uses a one-group pre-test-post design. The subjects in this study were the Sambas district handball team, aged 17–22 years. The purposive sampling technique resulted in 15 athletes being sampled. The handball athletes involved in this study underwent a circuit training method designed into the training program and carried out for 12 meetings with a frequency of three times a week. Measurement of VO2max level is carried out before and after the training period using the Yoyo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 instrument. The results showed a significance value of 0.000 <0.05. Based on these results, circuit training has proven to provide a significant increase in VO2max in handball athletes. The results of this study are expected to contribute to an understanding of the effectiveness of circuit training methods in improving physical conditions, especially VO2max levels, in handball athletes. The implications of this study can be useful in designing a more focused training program to improve the performance of handball athletes through a training approach that suits their physiological needs. Abstract:
According to the reviewed literature, the selection system in handball is quite complex and requires new approaches from trainers based on the current and modern requirements of this game. This paper investigated the importance of coordinative ability development in handball in the selection process for young Romanian children (10–12 years old). The results were obtained from a sociological questionnaire survey, for which 109 handball coaches, 34 female and 75 male, were questioned. The mean age was 40.71 years (SD = ±5.32) with a range of 31–51 years for female coaches and 40.3 years (SD = ±7.53) with a range of 30–62 years for male coaches. Their experience in handball coaching varied from 10 to 30 years, with 19.88 (SD = ±5.05) years of experience on average for female coaches and 19.09 (SD = ±5.26) years of experience on average for male coaches. The answers delivered depended on the experience and knowledge the coaches had and difficulties they had encountered over the years. Data are presented using a variety of appropriate descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and mean and standard variation. Obtained data were modeled using a one-way analysis of variation (ANOVA). The questionnaire format was three-to-five-point Likert scale. As a general overview, in the opinion of the surveyed specialists, the Romania selection process for handball does not meet their expectations, and the development level of coordinative abilities in 10–12 year-old children is medium to weak. A total of 61.76% female and 58.66% male coaches stressed the importance of developing coordination abilities to optimize the selection process of children for handball games, opening up a new approach in modern training methods for performance achievement. The obtained results from this paper questionnaire can be used by coaches as a different approach to the handball training process, considering that handball is a game mainly based on coordination.

Abstract:
Sports supplements are commonly used by elite athletes with the main goal of enhancing sport performance. Supplements use might be substantially different depending on the sport discipline, sex, and competitive level. To date, data about prevalence and the most-commonly used supplements in handball are scarce. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to determine the patterns of supplements use by handball players of both sexes and with different competitive levels: One hundred and eighty-seven handball players (112 men and 75 women) of different competitive levels (106 professional and 81 amateur) completed a validated self-administered questionnaire about supplements use. Supplements were classified according to the categorization of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). Overall, 59.9% of the handball players (n = 112) declared the use of at least one supplement and there were no significant differences between men and women (58.9% vs. 61.3%, p = 0.762) nor between professional vs. amateur handball players (67.1% vs. 53.8%, p = 0.074). The most prevalent supplements were sports drinks (42.2%), followed by energy bars (35.3%) and caffeine-containing products (31.6%). However, a greater consumption of group A supplements (those with strong scientific evidence; p = 0.029) and group B supplements (those with emerging scientific support, p = 0.012) was observed in male compared to female handball players. Supplements categorized as medical supplements were more commonly consumed in professional vs. amateur players (0.48 ± 0.80 vs. 0.21 ± 0.44, supplements p < 0.006). Additionally, a higher consumption of group B supplements was observed in professional compared to amateur players (0.58 ± 0.88 vs. 0.33 ± 0.72 supplements, p = 0.015). Handball players revealed a moderate use of supplements while sex and competitive level slighted changed the pattern of supplements use. A high portion of handball players use supplements as fuel during exercise and reported the use of caffeine-containing supplements to enhance performance.

Abstract:
Nelson Paillou can be considered a major sports leader of the second half of 20th century France. He was president of the French Handball Federation from 1964 to 1982, vice-president and eventually president of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) from 1971 to 1993, and a key person in the foundation of the French association for violence-free sport and fair play. Based on printed sources and on personal as well as institutional archives, this article questions the role Paillou played in the development of French sport. First, Paillou worked to introduce and disseminate handball in France, and he developed a policy to enable masses of people to learn to play handball across the country. As such, he targeted the French youth and founded a national executive for handball technique in order to structure the supervision of players of all levels, from initiation up to the elite level. Second, Nelson Paillou also contributed to the recognition and visibility of handball in France and at European and international levels. He developed a significant communication policy and assured a remarkable presence at all handball events in order to reinforce his choices in terms of management and diffusion of the game. Finally, it appears that during the second half of the 20th century, Paillou, who strongly supported the ideals of Pierre de Coubertin, emerged as a promotor of humanist values in sport and in handball. His position against sponsors and some kind of professionalism was overcome with difficulties but it was necessary to open French handball to the international field. Paillou presented himself as an ambiguous French sports leader who sometimes took contradictory decisions. However, Paillou’s resolutions reflected the choices of an opportunistic leader in front of the transformation of sport in a period marked by the arrival of show business and professionalism.

Abstract:
The aim of the present work is to propose and validate an evidence-based Wheelchair Handball Classification System, that allows its widespread use and the standardization of the classification system in different Wheelchair Handball competitions. The study involved 98 Wheelchair Handball athletes of both sex (87 males, 11 females), aged between 14 and 76 years old (M=40.32; SD= 11.73) with physical impairments. All wheelchair handball players that had participated in the last 3 national championships were invited to participate. We applied the assessment protocol to the participants and athletes’ classification process had three phases: Medical and Physiological functional assessment; Technical assessment (evaluation of specific movements with wheelchair manipulation and Handball skills) and observation in a game situation (with videorecorder). We used a Classification Points Form to permit the assessment of muscle strength and range of movement of upper limbs, trunk, lower limbs, wheelchair manipulation and Handball skills. The manipulation of wheelchair was measured considering the symmetrical movement, acceleration, braking and change direction, using the Sprint 20m – speed test and a Slalom test. The handball skills were assessed, using dribbling, reception, catching the ball from the floor, shoulder and shopped pass and 9m to the goal shot. Data Analysis was done using descriptive statistics and an Ordinal Linear Regression. The dependent variable was the classification class and we considered five independent variables (mean of upper limbs, trunk, lower limbs, wheelchair manipulation and Handball skills). Data Analysis was done using IBM SPSS Statistics. The results showed that the proposed model presents a high degree of adjustment and permitted identify determinant variables of performance in that sport and indicates key tasks to optimize classification process. There was consistency in the specific parameters to assign a class to the athlete, according to their functional capacity, associated with the specific neuromotor alterations of each clinical condition.

Abstract:
Now a day, the sports team coaches, trainers and other support staffs have a hectic job to deal with the preparation of their team players with consistent, precise and greater effort to meet the demands of the competition in shortest duration. Various training modalities were adopted depending upon the necessity that improves sports performance. Handball team coaches apparently felt that fitness and skill go hand in hand, where sports specific training caters to achieve this goal. Thus, the present study focussed on assessing the adaptations of maximal oxygen uptake and cardiovascular variables to handball game specific endurance circuit training. To accomplish the purpose twenty-four (24) trained university male handball players with a playing experience of more than eight years gave consent to participate. The selected twenty-four players were classified into two groups as Handball Game Specific Endurance Circuit Training Group (HGSECTG = 12) and Control Group (CG = 12). To test the effectiveness of handball game specific endurance circuit training (HGSECT) players performed specifically constructed handball circuit 3 days in a week for 12 weeks at 90-95% of maximal heart rate for two minutes duration and active recovery by walking. HGSECTG showed significant improvement on maximal oxygen uptake (t = 8.516, p < 0.05) and distance covered in Yo-Yo test also increased (t = 8.4, p < 0.05). Similarly, cardiovascular modifications are noted in maximum heart rate (HRPEAK, t = 2.372, p < 0.05) and resting heart rate (HRREST, t = 3.975, p < 0.05) and percentage of heart rate reserve (%HRRESERVE, t = 3.004, p < 0.05). We conclude that handball game specific endurance training programs could be sufficiently suitable to develop maximal oxygen uptake and positive adaptation of cardiovascular variables in twelve weeks of training among handball players. The intensity, duration, frequency and recovery of the intervention displayed improvement in VO2PEAK with reduced condition on cardiovascular stress.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the paper was to evaluate selected psychomotor abilities of handball players depending on the competition class (league), position on the court, training seniority and the dominant hand. The study covered a group of 40 handball players (age: 24.02 ± 3.99), while 50 non-training men (age: 22.90 ± 1.13) formed the control group. Studies were performed using Test2Drive computer tests. The following four tests were used for measuring psychomotor fitness: simple reaction time test, choice reaction time test, hand-eye coordination test and spatial anticipation test. An analysis revealed that handball players had better reaction times and movement times than the control group. The league, position on the court, training seniority and the dominant upper limb were analysed for their impact on the reaction time and movement time in handball players. An analysis of psychomotor abilities of handball players with regard to the league revealed that in the majority of tests the Superliga players had a shorter reaction time than players in lower leagues.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the effects of plyometric trainings on upper extremity anaerobic power and shotspeed in 20 volunteer male handball players, who are in the men's handball team at Süleyman Demirel University. Players were randomly divided into two groups as handball training group (HTG) and plyometric training group (PTG). While HTG continued routine handball training, plyometric trainings were applied to PTG additionally for 8 weeks, 3 days a week, at least 30 minutes a day. The upper extremity anaerobic power and shotspeed tests were applied to the groups in 1st and 8th weeks of the period (Inbar et al., 1996). Data analysis was made by using comparison tests. The study reveals that plyometric trainings have positive effects on shotspeed in handball. Considering that plyometric training provides maximum contraction in the shortest time possible, it can be said that applying plyometric training in pre-season and inseason training programming may be more effective.

Abstract:
The aim of the research was to obtain useful information concerning strength preparation of the senior men’s handball players, completing and applying a questionnaire to achieve this purpose. Every question has a precise objective, in order to obtain useful data concerning physical preparation, especially strength, of the senior men’s handball players. The conclusions of this research, obtained after analyzing the answers from the questionnaire, require some adjustments in order to improve the physical preparation of the senior’s male handball players. In the handball game, the specialists specify the need to identify the specific manifestation forms of the strength as indispensable, and the knowledge of the relation of the strength with the other motor qualities is essential to determine its role and place in the general and specific physical training. For the practice of the handball game at a high level, the relationships strength-speed, strength-resistance, strength-skill, strength-mobility are important.
