Thesis (M.Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2001.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 93-94).<br>In this thesis cellular handset and mobile terminal forward link sensitivity improvements due to dual-antenna systems with smart-antenna combining algorithms were determined. The performance of a mobile handset with a top-mounted monopole and back-mounted internal monopole was determined in the field. Handset field tests were conducted both for the handset attached to a phantom-head model and held by a human operator so that the effect of hand blockage and coupling were measured. The measurements were made on the IS-95 (CDMA) SPRINT PCS system in various parts of San Diego. Abstract:

The purpose of this project was the study of electrically small material coated antennas. In particular the use of a hybrid dielectric-ferrite material was examined, compared to dielectric alone, and ways it can improve antenna performance. The benefits resulting from the inclusion of ferrite were examined using both analytical and experimental methods. Initially a spherical analytical mathematical model was developed, to examine antenna efficiency, bandwidth and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in terms of different mixtures of relative permittivity εr and permeability μr. The theoretical model was then validated through a numerical transmission line matrix (TLM) simulation tool, applied to spherical and rectangular resonator geometries. It was observed that a material with equal values of relative permittivity and permeability in combination with specific positioning of the antenna in relation to the head, can give rise to the definitive small-size, high-efficiency, high-bandwidth, low-SAR antenna.

Abstract:

Fler och fler människor bosätter sig i storstäderna. Med ökad befolkning blir det trängre och trängre i bostäderna och många bor idag på mycket liten yta. På den lilla ytan ska allt nödvändigt få plats, så som sovrum, kök och badrum. Kvadratmeterpriset är dessutom mycket högt för lägenheter i Stockholm. Hittills har det funnits en hel del lösningar för Compact Living för sovrum och kök men lite har gjorts för badrummet, fram till nu.Målet med detta projekt var att ta fram ett uppfällbart handfat främst riktade till trångbodda. För att spara plats i badrummet skulle handfatet på ett enkelt sätt kunna fällas upp mot väggen och därmed kunna sitta på väggen bredvid eller bakom toaletten. Fokus har legat på att ta fram en produkt som inte är en kompromiss jämfört med ett vanligt handfat och att göra produkten lättanvänd. Grundidén till produkten togs fram redan 2008 men var då också bara en idé och ett koncept. De tekniska lösningar som krävs för att få produkten att fungera var inte alls utvecklade. I början av produktframtagningsprocessen utvecklades olika koncept för de tekniska problemen. De olika lösningarna jämfördes sedan mot varandra innan det bästa valdes ut.För att kunna placera handfatet på samma yta som toaletten konstruerades ett nytt slags avlopp. Avloppet består av en tillsats som sätts på toalettringen där en slang kopplas in. Därmed kan handfatet användas i alla badrum utan om dragning av avloppet. För att åskådliggöra produktens funktion och nytta har det lagts mycket tid på att få gram bra renderingar utifrån CAD-modeller samt en skalenlig prototyp, byggd i ABS-plast, styrenskum och plexiglas. Prototypen framställdes huvudsakligen i en friformsmaskin, även kallad 3D-printer. Friformsframställning är en relativt ny teknik för prototypframtagning och är ett effektivt men fortfarande dyrt sätt att tillverka fysiska modeller från en CAD-fil. En del av prototypen frästes ut ur en bit styrenskum från en CAD-modell. Resultatet blev en produkt, väl beskriven genom ritningar, CAD-filer och renderade bilder. Då tid har varit en bristvara i detta projekt har vissa avgränsningar gjorts.<br>Today’s house prices are steady going up, and one square meter in inner Stockholm city is very expensive. The meaning, compact living has existed a long time but mostly aimed at bedrooms and kitchens. The bathrooms in old small apartments, mainly in Stockholm, are often very small. It hasn’t been that much progress in making the bathrooms look roomy, until now. The goal with this project was to develop a fold-up sink, mainly intended for people with small apartments. To save space in the bathroom, the sink could easily be able to fold up against the wall so that it could hang on the wall next to the toilet or behind it. The main focus has been on developing a product that isn’t a compromise compared to a regular sink and also making it easy to use. The product’s initial idea was developed at 2008, but then it was mainly an idea and a concept. The technical solutions to make the product work weren’t started then. In the beginning of the product development process a variation of product concepts were developed to work out the technical problems. The different solutions were compared, before the best one was picked. To be able to put the sink in the same area as the toilet, a new kind off drain was constructed. The outlet consists of a grip that attaches to the toilet ring, and to a tube. In that way the sink can be used in every toilet without needing to connect new drains. A lot of effort has been put, to illustrate the products function and usefulness, to make good renderings from the CAD-models and also a scale prototype, built in ABS plastic, control foam and Plexiglas (PMMA). The prototype was created mainly in a free form machine, also called a 3D-printer. Freeform production is relatively new technology for prototyping, and is an effective but an expensive way for creating physical models from a CAD-model. A part of the prototype assembly was cut out from a part, styrene from a CAD-model.The result of the project is a product that is well described through blueprints, CAD-pictures and rendered pictures. Since time has been limited in this project some boundaries were set.

Abstract:

Left-handedness is an invisible handicap in today's classrooms. The education systsem in the United States makes special considerations and accommodations for special needs of students, yet left-handed individuals do not receive much consideration in a mainstream classroom. Experts say that up to twenty percent of children in Canada and the United States are left-handed. This project discusses how these left-handed children have to work in a right-handed world. The focus of this study was to provide right-handed teachers with teaching techniques, positive suggestions, and common sense approaches to accomodate the left-handed pupil.

Abstract:

<p>There is always a need for easy-to-follow processes that enable accurate and non-time consuming solutions. Nowadays we see a lot of different approaches to development processes in software engineering. This project is concerned with how to manage a software development process in a reliable, secure and efficient way. Software is available which provides some help for project managers / administrators to work more productively, with effective communication. Using such systems, it is possible to keep track of all the phases of development, including task distribution, making maximum use of previous hands-on experience and increasing productivity, to deliver a finished product in minimum time. No existing solution, however, fulfills all the desirable criteria. This paper describes the motivation, design and implementation of an improved development management system using Active Server Pages and Microsoft Internet Information Services with a backend Microsoft Access Database developed using a waterfall software development process. The resulting system is described and evaluated. This system will be beneficial for software houses, because they can communicate on the web, allowing efficiency gains by avoiding the need to call meetings for distribution of tasks among employees, with the additional advantage of location-transparent team management through the Internet.</p>

Abstract:

Syftet med vårt arbete är att få kunskap om hur hjärnan och handen samspelar. Vi vill visa att det finns en påverkan på hjärnans utveckling genom att arbeta med händerna. Till vår hjälp har vi läst forskningslitteratur och annan litteratur för att kunna bevisa våra teorier. Vi har även gjort ett antal intervjuer med andra slöjdlärare samt elever för att ta reda på vad de har för uppfattning om ämnet slöjd. Resultaten av våra intervjuer visar på att slöjdämnet inte alltid är så självklart, att det är svårt att sätta ord på varför vi har slöjdundervisning i skolan. Både lärare och elever har ibland svårt att argumentera för ämnet. Lärarna pratar mycket om den tysta kunskapen som eleverna får med sig och lägger stor vikt vid det kreativa förhållningssättet i slöjdundervisningen medan eleverna mestadels tror att slöjdämnet handlar om att få lära sig hantverket såsom exempelvis hanteringen av verktyg och maskiner. Slutsatsen av vårt arbete visar på att det finns effekter på hjärnans utveckling genom handens arbete. Det sker ett ständigt samspel mellan handen och hjärnan som också bidrar till bland annat förbättrad läs- och skrivförmåga, koncentrationsförmåga och arbetsprestation.Vi vill genom vårt arbete även upplysa andra om varför det är viktigt att vi bevarar våra djupt rotade hantverkskunskaper.

Abstract:

The main objectives of this research are to investigate and design low profile antennas for mobile handsets applications using the balanced concept. These antennas are considered to cover a wide range of wireless standards such as: DCS (1710¿1880 MHz), PCS (1850¿1990 MHz), UMTS (1920¿2170 MHz), WLAN (2400¿2500 MHz and 5000 ¿ 5800 MHz) and UWB frequency bands. Various antennas are implemented based on built-in planar dipole with a folded arm structure. The performance of several designed antennas in terms of input return loss, radiation patterns, radiation efficiency and power gain are presented and several remarkable results are obtained. The measurements confirm the theoretical design concept and show reasonable agreement with computations. The stability performance of the proposed antenna is also evaluated by analysing the current distribution on the mobile phone ground plane. The specific absorption rate (SAR) performance of the antenna is also studied experimentally by measuring antenna near field exposure. The measurement results are correlated with the calculated ones. A new dual-band balanced antenna using coplanar waveguide structure is also proposed, discussed and tested; this is intended to eliminate the balanced feed network. The predicted and measured results show good agreement, confirming good impedance bandwidth characteristics and excellent dual-band performance. In addition, a hybrid method to model the human body interaction with a dual band balanced antenna structure covering the 2.4 GHz and 5.2 GHz bands is presented. Results for several test cases of antenna locations on the body are presented and discussed. The near and far fields were incorporated to provide a full understanding of the impact on human tissue. Abstract:

There are two typical interference problems in a multi-radio platform, i.e. blocking due to the saturation of the front end of a receiver by the high power radiation from another transmitter, and desensitization of the receiver by the in-band noise generated by the other transmitter. The UWB device is not an exception. In the coexistence study, two different development kits containing a UWB radio are investigated. The UWB devices cause a raised noise floor and generate severe spurious emissions into the receiver bands for GSM, UMTS, Bluetooth and 802.11b. Consequently this results in degradation of the sensitivity performance of these receivers. Based on measurements performed, the solution for this problem was found by inserting a band-pass filter or a high-pass filter at the transmit path of the UWB device.

Abstract:

During the start up of a project, we found out that an event handler was needed. This event handler needed to be redundant and able to ensure that events with dependencies to each other, where executed in a specied correct order. Policies where written to ensure that the end result, if able to fulll these, was the product that was needed. The result is an event handler written in Erlang, which ensures that all events given to it will be executed in the order specied. Even though not fullling all policies there are plans for future work with solutions on how this will be xed. In conclusion, even though the event handler is not a complete product, this report presents a solution to the general event handling problem.<br>Under uppstarten av ett projekt ck vi reda pa att det behovdes en handelsehanterare. Handelsehanteraren skulle vara redundant och kunna sakerstalla att handelser beroende av varandra, kordes i den ordning som speciserats. Policies skrevs ner for att forsakra att om handelsehanteraren kunde uppfylla dessa, var detta produkten som eftersoktes. Resultatet blev en handelsehanterare skriven i Erlang, vilken forsakrar att samtliga event givna, blev utforda i den specierade ordningen. Trots att den inte uppfyller samtliga policies, nns det planer for hur man i framtiden skall kunna losa dessa problem. Sammanfattningsvis, trots att den framtagna handelsehanteraren inte ar den kompletta produkten, presenterar anda denna rapport en losning pa det generella handelsehanteringsproblemet.

Abstract:

I den här studien genomförs en empirisk analys av EU:s handel med Kina under åren efter dess inträde till WTO 2001 fram till 2014. Fokus ligger på att studera förändringen av tariffnivåer i EU:s handel med Kina under perioden och huruvida ökande konkurrens i produktkategorier med olika teknologisk nivå kan förklara den här variationen. Analysen genomförs primärt med hjälp av data ifrån Världsbanken, WTO och Eurostat. Inga tydliga bevis för att variationen i konkurrensnivå för produkter med olika teknologisk nivå skulle ligga bakom den observerade förskjutningen av tariffer hittas dock.

I have used theory testing research and as research method have I used surveys. As data acquisition method have I used interviews. Except the interviews there also is some chapter in the report to get a background and look in ecommerce and Internet.</p><br><p>E-handel är ett begrepp som många pratar om i nuläget. E-handel förknippas med datorstödd handel och det är ett nytt sätt att bedriva affärsverksamhet på. Användare och system kopplas upp mot varandra för att sedan effektivt förmedla och överföra information. Inom e-handel finns det många sätt att göra affärer på och det kan vara till exempel mellan ett företag och ett annat företag (B2B) eller mellan företag och konsument (B2C).</p><p>I denna magisteruppsats har jag undersökt ifall småföretag vill satsa på e-handel och i så fall på vilket sätt. Tillvägagångssättet jag har använt mig av har varit teoritestande. Som undersökningsmetod har jag använt surveys. Datainsamlingsmetoden har varit intervjuer där jag har intervjuat tretton olika företag i södra Småland. Förutom intervjuerna finns det ett antal kapitel i uppsatsen för att få en bakgrund och inblick i e-handel, dess begrepp, Internet med mera.</p>

<p>Detta examensarbete behandlar elektronisk handel mellan företag och vilken affärsrelation som företaget har med sina företagskunder efter införandet av elektorisk handel. Telefonintervjuer har skett med fyra olika företag som ingår i möbelbranschen. Syftet med arbete är att se om företagens förväntningar med avsikt på fem olika aspekter som utgör en god affärsrelation infriats.</p><p>Denna undersökning visar att aspekterna samarbete och förtroende är de två aspekter som företagen har störst förväntningar på. De andra tre aspekterna engagemang, anpassning och kunskap om kunden har generellt företaget inga större förväntningar innan införandet av elektronisk handel. Om dessa förväntningar har infriats eller inte besvaras inte i denna undersökning på grund av olika faktorer som har spelat in.</p>

<p>Under de senaste åren har elektronisk handel, eller e-handel som det ofta kallas, blivit en allt vanligare företeelse. Orsaken till detta står att finna i Internets snabba framväxt. Då den teknik som behövs för tillgång till Internet är billig, enkel och lättillgänglig har det skapats förutsättningar för en snabb och omfattande utveckling av den elektroniska handeln. Elektronisk handel kan rikta sig både till konsumenter och till företag. Det är dock den typ som riktar sig till företag som idag är den vanligaste formen av elektronisk handel och även den som förutspås öka mest. </p><p>Med utgångspunkt i ovanstående resonemang har vi valt att studera elektronisk handel mellan företag. Vi har därför valt att undersöka ett system för elektronisk handel och ett antal av de kunder som använder sig av detta. Vi har funnit att de undersökta kundföretagen alla är mycket positivt inställda till elektronisk handel. Användandet av e-handelssystemet har inte inneburit några stora förändringar för kundföretagen, den allmänna uppfattningen är dock att e-handelssystemet lett till att deras arbete blivit något mer bekvämt. Vi menar att e-handelssystemet troligen skulle leda till fler fördelar för kundföretagen om det utökades vad gäller antalet funktioner samt funktionernas omfattning. För att en utbyggnad av e-handelssystemet ska komma kunderna till godo anser vi dock att det är viktigt att ta vissa aspekter i beaktande. Enligt vår mening är det viktigt att företaget arbetar för att skapa goda relationer till sina kunder samt att de utvecklar väl fungerande kanaler för återkoppling. Vi anser vidare att de funktioner e-handelssystemet utökas med bör vara valbara för att därigenom undvika att systemet blir alltför komplicerat. Slutligen anser vi det vara av stor vikt att företaget kontinuerligt informerar kunderna om e-handelssystemets funktion och utveckling.</p>

<p><p><strong>Syfte:</strong>Elektronisk handel är ett växande fenomen i affärsvärlden. Att förstå företagens avsikt med e-handelsanvändning är viktigt för både akademiker såväl som praktiker. Företag, organisationer och till och med kommuner har börjat bedriva e-handel för att automatisera, effektivisera och på sikt spara pengar i sina verksamheter. Syftet med denna studie är att empiriskt beskriva e-handelns utveckling och användning i Sverige och specifikt inom den teknologiska industrin som arbetar med automation.<p> </p><p><strong>Metod:</strong>Denna studie behandlar e-handel i automationsföretag. Respondenterna ombads att validera betydelsen av e-handel genom webbaserade enkäter. Vidare undersöker denna studie effekterna av e-handel mellan företag. Resultatet bekräftades genom att analysera data och information med hjälp av SPSS.<p> </p><p><strong>Slutsatser:</strong>Resultaten visar att e-handel mellan företag ger positiva effekter. En betydande del av automationsföretagen var positiva till e-handel och slutsatserna kan vara till hjälp för företag vid bedömningen av drivkrafterna och hindren för en effektiv driftsättning av e-handel med andra företag. Resultatet av e-handel är främst effektivitet i arbetet och reducerad administration.<p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p></p></p></p></p></p>

I denne oppgaven valgte jeg en kvalitativ metode og et kvalitaivt forskningsintervju for å få tak i hva lærerene vektlegger for å oppnå kontakt med elevene. Oppgavens problemstilling har vært; Hva legger lærere på yrkesfaglig utdanningsprogram vekt på i etablering av kontakt med sine elever? Tre lærere fra en videregående skole i Nord–Trøndelag har bidratt til at denne oppgaven har blitt til. Lærerne ble anbefalt av en rådgiver ved skolen og valgt ut fra engasjement, omdømme, og at de hadde jobbet spesielt tett opp imot sine elever de siste årene med tanke på at flest mulig skulle gjennomføre. Datainnsamling ble gjennomført via intervju, som ble tatt opp på diktafon. Opptakene ble transkriptert og analysert. Jeg søkte svar på hva lærere vektlegger i å oppnå kontakt med elevene gjennom erfaringer og opplevelser de har i møte med eleven. Resultatet av analysen viser tre kategorier som belyser informantenes felles vektlegging i å etablere kontakt med elevene. Hva informantene legger vekt på kunne samles under: 1: forutsetninger for å etablere kontakt og bygge relasjon, 2: å etablere kontakt og å knytte bånd og 3: nærhet og distanse i relasjon. Jeg har drøftet mine empiriske funn opp i mot valgt teori innenfor temaet lærer-elev-relasjon. I mine empiriske funn fant jeg at informantene vektlegger forutsetninger som proaktiv klasseldelse, klare rutiner og tydelige forventninger til elevene, samt betydningen av et nært kollegialt samarbeid. Informantene vektlegger å bli godt kjent med elevene i starten av et skoleår. De vektlegger elevens interesser og tilstreber å gi trygghet og tilhørighet. Videre vektlegger de å være en annerkjennede lærere som er bevisst på sin profesjonelle rolle. De empiriske funnene gir også et inntrykk av hva er utfordrende i å oppnå kontakt med elevene. Det kan være utfordrende i forhold til at det kommer elever fra ulike steder, samarbeid innad i skolen og noen ganger kan det være vanskelig å vite hvor nær eleven man skal være?

With good R&D capabilities and production efficiency, Taiwan’s mobile phone foundry industry rises by ODM companies getting the orders of low-end handsets from international brand mobile phone companies. From 2007, Chinese “Shan Zhai” handsets emerge to meet the huge demand of Chinese farmers and migrant workers, and exporting to other emerging markets by its low price. "Shan Zhai" handsets rapidly sweep through low-cost handset market, and bring great impact to Taiwanese handset ODM companies. In this study, we use secondary data to investigate the global mobile phone market, "Shan Zhai" handsets developing trajectory and the current status of Taiwanese handset ODM companies. Then use the value chain, the threat of the new entrants within Porter’s five forces and business model framework to analyze the competitiveness of "Shan Zhai" handsets. "Shan Zhai" handsets adopt MediaTek''s integrated mobile phone solution, through hundreds of mobile phone design houses and thousands of phone integrators, to form a resource sharing system. This system not only owns economic scales, but also vitality and flexibility. Through this industry value chain innovation, "Shan Zhai" handsets owns the advantages of low cost and short product development cycle, coupled with active access to distribution channels and rapid response to market demand. All of these create the competitiveness of "Shan Zhai" handsets. But they don’t focus on quality, not getting certification of network testing, which will be the limit of their development. Finally, we analyze the industry value chain activities and the difficulties that "Shan Zhai" handsets encounter. We propose four strategies to Taiwanese ODM companies with their competitive advantages. (1)Develop new MediaTek’s integrated solution to enter "Shan Zhai" market (2)Develop new MediaTek’s integrated solution to design and manufacture for international brand mobile phone company. (3)Design and manufacture handsets for worldwide distributors that are with scale and willing to have own brand. (4)Cooperate with worldwide telecommunication operators. In order to cope with disruptive innovation of "Shan Zhai" handsets, we review the resources, processes and values of Taiwanese handsets ODM companies, then we suggest to create new organization for the effective implementation of the above strategies. There are below two methods for new organizations. (1)Split out one team to set up a new company. (2)ODM company merge and acquire "Shan Zhai" company with scale, and add the R&D human resources, but no process and value integration. By above strategy and organization suggestion, we hope to help Taiwanese handset ODM companies out of current predicament.

A hand tools with good handle design will facilitate the performance and reduce the possibility of upper limbs injury of users during work. The handle design is considered as one of the most important factors of hand tools. The purpose of this study was to explore the optimal grip span and construct handle profile of two-handle hand tools, and evaluate its efficiency and comfort. Forty participants (20 male, 20 female, aged 22-31 year, m= 24.2 year, SD= 1.9 year) were recruited as subjects for hand dimension measurements and hand grip strength. A curve profile gauge made by this study was used to measure the hand anthropometric data. The hand measurements included: 1) the grip span between thumb and the other four fingers, 2) the curve profile at second knuckle of the four fingers, 3) the curve profile on the root of thumb, 4) the length of second knuckle of the four fingers. The hand grip strength was measured by the hand dynamometer, and the maximal volitional contraction of the hand and the finger pressure were measured. The study results showed: 1) the average grip distance of index finger, middle finger and ring finger is 58.2 mm, 67.8 mm and 77.2 mm, respectively. It is the appropriate grip distance for the hand, 2) the minimum value average length of the second knuckle of the four fingers is 15.9 mm, which is the width of the handle, 3) the male had the largest average grip strength at the grip span of 6 cm, while the female had the largest average grip strength at the grip span of 5 cm, 4) the maximum pressure of fingers was middle finger, followed by ring finger, index finger, base of thumb and little finger, 5) the variation of the total finger pressure of the new handle was smaller than the straight handle, indicating that the fingers pressure of the new handle was more average than that of the straight handle, and 6) the comfort to new handle was better than straight handle. The results of this study can provide a reference for hand tool designers and industry.

For influence on the finger coordinate operation, the difference of handle interface factors, gender and ponderal index was significant. The others(work postures, the habit of sport) was not significant. 2. For influence on the wrist coordinate operation, the difference of handle interface factors, gender and ponderal index was significant. The others(work postures, the habit of sport) was not significant. 3. For influence on the arm coordinate operation, the difference of work postures and the habit of sport was significant. The others(handle interface factors, gender and ponderal index) was not significant.

In the thesis, by applying half-bow-tie monopole antenna and x to the power of N curved line structure, two antenna prototypes for DVB-H are proposed. With the help of ground plane surrounding the antenna, a half-bow-tie monopole antenna is proposed to increase the bandwidth. To broaden bandwidth, boundaries of No.1 antenna are changed and become a curved line. The curved line is described by a x to the power of N. The simulated and measured results confirmed that the proposed antenna can operates at 470 MHz to 800 MHz bands. The antenna not only has a simple planar structure but also yields the smallest antenna area. Moreover, the antenna has a nearly omni-directional radiation pattern and a reasonable peak gain of 2.25 dBi to 3.74 dBi.

Both designs were printed on FR4 substrates and have the character of simple structure. The first antenna architecture is a hybrid antenna consists of a monopole and a loop antenna. The resonant element for the lower band which has application for GSM、DCS、PCS、UMTS、Bluetooth is facilitated by the monopole antenna, while that of the higher band for WLAN and WiMAX application is provided by the loop antenna. Near omni-directional radiation patterns have been achieved for the proposed antenna system with a measured peak gain of about 4dBi. The architectural design of the second antenna consists of a C-shape monopole antenna. This antenna design generated radiation covering the entire operation bands. The radiation patterns were near omni-directional in the operation bands with a measured peak gain of about 5dBi.

The second design mainly consists of double folded monopole and branch ground to resonate in the lower-frequency band over LTE700/GSM850/GSM900. Another monopole is added to combine with the former resonators to reach LTE700/WWAN operation. Moreover, all the resonators can be characterized independently. The last design is a further study of the second case of the environment effect on six-band operation. In addition, the bio-compatibility is discussed.
