Abstract:
In 1593, Simon Lyra (1547-1601) was appointed cantor of the St. Elisabeth Church and Gymnasium in Breslau/Wrocław. In the same year, he drew up a list of prints and manuscripts that he considered appropriate for teaching and for use in Lutheran worship. In addition to this list, there are six music manuscripts dating from the 1580s and 1590s that either belonged to him or were collected under his direction. Taken together, Lyra’s repertoire list and the additional manuscripts contain well over a thousand items, including masses, motets, responsories, psalms, passions, vespers settings, and devotional songs. The music in the collections contain all of the items necessary for use in the liturgies performed in the St. Elisabeth Church and Gymnasium in the last quarter of the sixteenth century. This list provides valuable clues into the musical life of a well-established Lutheran church and school at the end of the sixteenth century. When studying collections of prints and manuscripts, I believe it is helpful to make a distinction between two types of use. Printed music represents possibilities. In other words, they are collections from which a cantor could make choices. In Lyra’s case, we can view his recommendations as general examples of what he considered liturgically and aesthetically appropriate for his time and position. On the other hand, manuscripts represent choices. The musical works in the six Bohn manuscripts associated with Lyra are the result of specific decisions to copy and place them in particular collections in a particular order. Therefore, they can provide clues as to what works were performed on which occasions. In other words, manuscripts provide a truer picture of a musical culture in a particular location. According to my analysis of Lyra’s recommendations, by the time he arrived at St. Elisabeth the liturgies, especially the mass, still followed Luther's Latin "Formula Missae" adopted in the 1520s. The music for the services consisted of Latin masses and motets by the most highly regarded, international composers of the first half of the sixteenth century. During his time as Signator and cantor, he updated the church and school choir repertory with music of his contemporaries, primarily composers from Central Europe. Three of these composers, Gregor Lange, Johann Knoefel, and Jacob Handl, may have been his friends and/or colleagues. In addition, some of the manuscripts collected under his direction provide evidence that the Breslau liturgies were beginning to change in the direction of the seventeenth-century Lutheran service in which the "Latin choir" gave way to more German-texted sacred music and greater congregational participation.

Abstract:
In this paper, we continue our study of the Abel equation with the right-hand side belonging to the Lebesgue weighted space. We have improved the previously known result— the existence and uniqueness theorem formulated in terms of the Jacoby series coefficients that gives us an opportunity to find and classify a solution by virtue of an asymptotic of some relation containing the Jacobi series coefficients of the right-hand side. The main results are the following—the conditions imposed on the parameters, under which the Abel equation has a unique solution represented by the series, are formulated; the relationship between the values of the parameters and the solution smoothness is established. The independence between one of the parameters and the smoothness of the solution is proved.

Abstract:
AbstractThe present article analyzes the various texts concerning Jacob's image engraved on the throne of glory. It compares the Jacob texts with previous traditions regarding Adam's special status as the image of God or the equivalent of a cultic representation of an ancient Near Eastern king or of a Roman emperor. The Jacob texts reveal a similar anthropology that emphasizes the dichotomy of humanity. On one hand the earthliness of the functionality of the human body is associated with angelic opposition, and, on the other, the body's divine likeness gives rise to angelic veneration. The investigation of the two traditions demonstrates a conspicuous dependence of the Jacob texts on the Adamic traditions.

Abstract:
In an Ashkenazic Bible produced in the thirteenth century, we find a unique micrography decoration portraying Ezekiel's vision. On the bottom margin the Masorah micrography shows the full bodies of the four creatures: the lion facing the ox, and the man, in full armor and holding an object in each hand, facing the eagle. I suggest that the choice to portray the human figure in this micrography as an armored knight can be explained by reference to the tradition describing seeing Jacob's image engraved on the throne in Ezekiel's vision, as also reflected in the writings of Hasidei Ashkenaz. The decoration identifies the human figure as Jacob, which may illustrate the verse 'Avir Ya‘akov, meaning “mighty one of Jacob” or Jacob the Knight.

AbstractIn his embryological treatise De plastica seminis facultate (Strasburg, 1580), Jacob Schegk (1511-1587), professor of philosophy and medicine at the University of Tübingen, developed, through a unique interpretation of the Aristotelian embryology, a theory of the "plastic faculty" (facultas plastica), whose origin lay in the Galenic idea of the formative power. The present study analyses the precise nature of Schegk's theory, by setting it in its historical and intellectual context. It will also discuss the hitherto unappreciated Neoplatonic dimension of Schegk's notion of the soul's vehicle.

Chuva branca is the novel of greater repercussion of the Jew Amazonian Paulo Jacob, greeted with enthusiasm by authors such as Jorge Amado, Antônio Olinto, and Assis Brasil. It was the work through which Paulo Jacob achieved to overcome some regional barriers and made an appearance at a national level. Based on documentary regionalism, he represents a typology of Amazonian man from his disappointments and his fight against poverty, from his beliefs and culture. This research, when investigating the intertextuality, has as its general objective to track an Amazonian library which should have exercised power of modeling over the writing for Chuva branca, as well as trying showing specifically: that the themes about Amazon reality which appear with expressiveness come from the Amazon riverside, that is, man in Amazon, poverty, imagery, sacred, and indigenous culture; that, although intertexts cannot always be of easy detection, it is possible to make inter-textual relations with works belonging to the Amazon library, probable readings of Paulo Jacob, as in the case of some works linked to Sociology and Anthropology; that Paulo Jacob’s discursive construction, by trying to represent the man in Amazon from his dramas and fights, ended up having documentary nature with the objective of divulgating the culture and showing a significant part of an isolated and unknown region; that reading Chuva branca nowadays, about 50 years later, it known that between the novel’s horizon of expectation and our reading there are profound economic, historic, and social changes that took place not only in Amazon reality but also in world reality. This fact shows that the Amazon which was represented in Chuva branca is certainly less isolated and rural, as well as is permeated by technology and by the urbanization, and the reader’s look about the novel, while going through the timeframe, was renovated. It has to be said that my research is substantiated on the aesthetic reception theory, linked to Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser, its main exponents. Obviously, the research do not remain itself within all limits of methodology suggested by this theory, but relates to it through some key concepts, such as horizon of expectation and fusion of horizons. Finally, I defend that what some author of the Amazonian library, such as sociologists and anthropologists, make with their sciences with respect to the documentation of the Amazonian man and his conditions, Paulo Jacob makes it through the representation, through the discursive construction, and his characters. He ends up divulgating to Brazil a significant part of its own face.

The present study has the proposal to analyze the way in which the birth of modern science was articulated within Renaissance’s historiography, particularly the relationship between science, philosophical thought and the various forms of writing history of thought in the first half of twentieth century. The first part we analyze the debate between Burckhardt and Cassirer and theirs interpretive differences. In the second we analyze a set of fundamental interpretations: from scientific Renaissance to absence of science in the very Renaissance. By studying this historiographical route we intend to think over the peculiarity of Alexandre Koyré’s interpretation and historiography of thought.

Abstract: We will show that the equations of motion for a class of non-minimally coupled anisotropic scalar-tensorial cosmological models are equivalent to the geodesic fux on certain augmented manifold endowed with a non-Riemannian metric. This result generalizes some recent ones and provides a better dynamical classification of the phase space of such cosmological models. The techniques employed in this work are, basically, a generalization of the well known Maupertuis- Jacobi Principle of Classical Mechanics, which allows us to associate the geodesic flux of a particular metric (the so called Jacobi Metric) to the equations of motion of a given mechanical system, typically a Hamiltonian one. We will show also that the classical geometrical approach based on the Eisenhart metric can be generalized in an analogous way for the cosmological case, leading to another complementary geometrical approach to that one corresponding to the generalization of the Maupertuis-Jacobi Principle. Such results are applied to certain quintessential cosmological models leading to some interesting and promising results

Abstract:
This article describes a direct approach for computing scalar and matrix kernels, respectively for the unitary ensembles on the one hand and the orthogonal and symplectic ensembles on the other hand, leading to correlation functions and gap probabilities. In the classical orthogonal polynomials (Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi), the matrix kernels for the orthogonal and symplectic ensemble are expressed in terms of the scalar kernel for the unitary case, using the relation between the classical orthogonal polynomials going with the unitary ensembles and the skew-orthogonal polynomials going with the orthogonal and symplectic ensembles. The article states the fundamental theorem relating the orthonormal and skew-orthonormal polynomials that enter into the Christoffel-Darboux kernels

Abstract:
‘The degradations, the wrongs, the vices, that grow out of slavery, are more than I can describe.’ Harriet Jacobs was born a slave in the American South and went on to write one of the most extraordinary slave narratives. First published pseudonymously in 1861, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl describes Jacobs’s treatment at the hands of her owners, her eventual escape to the North, and her perilous existence evading recapture as a fugitive slave. To save herself from sexual assault and protect her children she is forced to hide for seven years in a tiny attic space, suffering terrible psychological and physical pain. Written to expose the appalling treatment of slaves in the South and the racism of the free North, and to advance the abolitionist cause, Incidents is notable for its careful construction and literary effects. Jacobs’s story of self-emancipation and a growing feminist consciousness is the tale of an individual and a searing indictment of slavery’s inhumanity. This edition includes the short memoir by Jacobs’s brother, John S. Jacobs, ‘A True Tale of Slavery’.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the relationship between Jews and the modern city, and more specifically how urban life contributed to Jewish degeneration, by drawing on the arguments advanced by Yuri Slezkine in his book The Jewish Century. While some scholars praised The Jewish Century, others were critical of Slezkine’s work. The chapter first looks at intellectuals who influenced the turn-of-the-century discourse on the city, including Georg Simmel, Louis Wirth, Arthur Ruppin, and Theodor Herzl, before discussing the combined impact of the historical and sociological processes of urbanization and assimilation, on the one hand, and of individual adaptation and mental degeneration, on the other, on the sociological meaning of being Jewish. It also considers the discourse regarding the intersection between race and environment, taking into account arguments by physicians such as Jacob Snowman and Abraham Myerson.

Abstract:
In 1665, Sabbetai Zevi, a self-proclaimed Messiah with a mass following throughout the Ottoman Empire and Europe, announced that the redemption of the world was at hand. As Jews everywhere rejected the traditional laws of Judaism in favor of new norms established by Sabbetai Zevi, and abandoned reason for the ecstasy of messianic enthusiasm, one man watched in horror. This book tells the story of Jacob Sasportas, the Sephardic rabbi who alone challenged Sabbetai Zevi's improbable claims and warned his fellow Jews that their Messiah was not the answer to their prayers. The book brings to life the tumultuous century in which Sasportas lived, an age torn apart by war, migration, and famine. It describes the messianic frenzy that gripped the Jewish Diaspora, and Sasportas's attempts to make sense of a world that Sabbetai Zevi claimed was ending. As Jews danced in the streets, Sasportas compiled The Fading Flower of the Zevi, a meticulous and eloquent record of Sabbatianism as it happened. In 1666, barely a year after Sabbetai Zevi heralded the redemption, the Messiah converted to Islam at the behest of the Ottoman sultan, and Sasportas's book slipped into obscurity. This book is a revelatory account of a spiritual leader who dared to articulate the value of rabbinic doubt in the face of messianic certainty, and a revealing examination of how his life and legacy were rediscovered and appropriated by later generations of Jewish thinkers.

Abstract:
AbstractWe describe the canonical weak distributive law $$\delta :\mathcal S\mathcal P\rightarrow \mathcal P\mathcal S$$ δ : S P → P S of the powerset monad $$\mathcal P$$ P over the S-left-semimodule monad $$\mathcal S$$ S , for a class of semirings S. We show that the composition of $$\mathcal P$$ P with $$\mathcal S$$ S by means of such $$\delta $$ δ yields almost the monad of convex subsets previously introduced by Jacobs: the only difference consists in the absence in Jacobs’s monad of the empty convex set. We provide a handy characterisation of the canonical weak lifting of $$\mathcal P$$ P to $$\mathbb {EM}(\mathcal S)$$ EM ( S ) as well as an algebraic theory for the resulting composed monad. Finally, we restrict the composed monad to finitely generated convex subsets and we show that it is presented by an algebraic theory combining semimodules and semilattices with bottom, which are the algebras for the finite powerset monad $$\mathcal P_f$$ P f .

Abstract:
It is known that the Modernism greatly influenced the way people use spaces, the car use was prioritized, changing the function of the street from a meeting space (human scale – Gehl, 2010) to a passage space (motor scale). It is in this context that this paper aims to present the aspects that interfere in the walkability with focus on different urban morphologies. For this purpose, the study was applied to three neighbourhoods of Lisbon (Portugal) with different morphological characteristics: Graça (organic mesh), Campo de Ourique (regular mesh) and Telheiras (contemporary mesh) and then for the analysis methodological were applied their respective axial maps – derived from the Space Syntax Theory (Hillier and Hanson, 1984). The findings show that, as some authors (Hillier and Hanson, 1984; Handy, 1996; Holanda, 2002; Medeiros, 2013) state, there are differences in performance between different urban forms. According to Jacobs (2000) and Gehl (2010), modern spaces or those that suffer the influence of modernism have morphological elements that repel people, which make the space almost desert, without life. Therefore, it is concluded that depending on the morphological characteristics present in the space there will be more or less life. In other words, the greater segregation between the morphological elements, lower the presence of people in public space.
