Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to indicate how conflicts in foreign business relationships are handled by small firms from a relational point of view and how these conflicts can be used by small firms in a positive way. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses qualitative study and presents the results of in-depth interviews conducted with six small, Poland-based firms. Findings The paper indicates the nature of conflicts in foreign business relationships from the perspective of small firms, including the sources of conflict and its outcomes. The main sources of conflict indicated include service or product quality, financial aspects of cooperation and cultural differences. The study exposes the existence of both negative (e.g. financial consequences) and positive (e.g. gaining new experience) outcomes of conflicts. It shows that positive conflict handling often constitutes a significant challenge for small firms and that the authors cannot really speak of one optimal method of conflict handling. Regardless of the method adopted, the costs involved should be taken into detailed consideration. Practical implications The paper points to actions that could be taken by small firms to handle conflicts in a way that will produce positive outcomes. Originality/value Managing international relationships is a more challenging task compared with domestic ones, especially for smaller firms. The paper exposes the impact of two categories of conflict (called day-to-day problems and severe conflicts) in a foreign relationship on small firms and considers different methods of handling the conflict situations.

Abstract:
Purpose Conflicts are inevitable in organizations and are a significant challenge for frontline managers (FLMs). This study aims to investigate the relationship between the leadership styles of FLMs and relationship conflicts (RLCs), with the indirect intervention of emotion regulation (ER) and five conflict-handling styles (CHSs). Design/methodology/approach Research data were obtained from 243 FLMs in the Pakistan textile industry. SPSS 23 and PROCESS macros software were used to test and verify hypotheses regarding leadership styles, ER, CHSs and RLC. The authors conducted 5,000 bootstrap replications to verify mediation. Findings Leadership styles are significantly associated with RLC. A high degree of ER can negatively moderate RLCs through transformational leadership (TFL) and transactional leadership (TCL) styles and positively moderate RLCs through a laissez-faire leadership (LZF) style. Among CHSs, a compromise style mediates the relationship between RLC and the TFL and LZF styles, and a domination style mediates the relationship between RLC and the TCL style. Practical implications FLMs should be trained to overcome workplace interpersonal conflicts. Appropriate cognizance of a conflict before it occurs is a requisite skill. FLMs must be able to use all five given CHSs. Originality/value This study identifies the association of leadership styles with CHSs and ER to manage RLC in a non-Western context. The study enhances understanding of the use of the ER factor with the different CHSs of FLMs.

Abstract:
Conflicts between the buyers and sellers are often inevitable during the progress of purchasing activities. It is essential to understand the conflict handling styles of purchasing professionals for those who want to build reciprocal buyer-supplier relationships. Nevertheless, only little attention was paid on the study of purchasing professionals’ conflict handling styles. While ethical purchasing is often considered essential in maintaining the relationships with suppliers, purchasing professionals’ moral development may influence their conflict handling. Furthermore, because of the growing numbers of global suppliers, purchasing professionals who are often exposed to multicultural occasions are expected to be capable to communicate and negotiate with their suppliers to prevent possible conflicts. There is no research analyzing the association between multicultural experiences, moral development and conflict handling styles of purchasing professionals. Accordingly, based on a review of related literature, this paper attempts to explore the impact of multicultural experiences and moral development on conflict handling styles of purchasing professionals, and provide some research suggestions. The findings of this paper can contribute to the research on conflict handling of purchasing professionals.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on the interactive conflicts between business and governmental authorities in the regulatory process of an emerging business model: sharing economy. Focusing on bike sharing system, the study also investigates the conflict-handling strategy of bike sharing companies and government regulation. Design/methodology/approach An evolutionary game model is introduced to illustrate the interactive conflict between bike sharing companies and government regulation, combined with system dynamics (SD) to simulate the evolutionary conflict-handling strategies between the two players. Findings The dynamic strategies of the two players are observed, and under five conditions the conflict outcomes are evolutionary stable states. Simulations show that each party sacrifices part of its interest and adjust its strategy according to that of the other, indicating the conflict-handling strategy as a compromising mode. Furthermore, the strategies of bike sharing companies are sensitive to additional operation and maintenance costs for producing low-quality bicycles and costs of positive regulation, which provides theoretical guidance for regulatory authorities. Originality/value The station-less bike sharing come up in China recently, and it is an important research field of entrepreneurship. Owing to the uniqueness and novelty of the phenomenon, conflicts and challenges exist during the regulation process. Thus, the study practically contributes to the conflict-handling strategies of businesses and government under the context of sharing economy. Methodologically, as a novel issue with less available data to carry out empirical research, this study combines evolutionary game theory with SD to shed light on the complex interactions between businesses and government. The research method can be applied to other entrepreneurial studies.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the relationship between conflicts and democratization processes in Russia and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. The severe interethnic and political conflicts that marked the beginning of the era of democratization in the former Soviet Union still have not been resolved. These ongoing conflicts inhibit democratic reforms. States have neither the resources nor the will to promote the peaceful resolution of these conflicts. Nongovernmental, cooperative conflict resolution may provide some assistance in handling conflicts in the post-Soviet context. Drawing on her significant experience working in cross-cultural conflicts, the author provides illustrations of practical applications of conflict analysis and resolution skills and processes. Finally, in concluding the article, the author explores the connection between civil society building and peaceful conflict resolution.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test the possible influence of the Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour (TPB) in predicting conflict-handling intentions during process conflict episodes. Conflict situations are often to be managed with limited time in software projects. With this cue, the study is conducted in the context of software companies in India. Design/methodology/approach – Five variables of the TPB comprising attitude, injunctive subjective norms, descriptive subjective norm, conflict efficacy (CE) and structural assurance (SA) have been studied in relation to the two standard conflict-handling intentions: integrating and dominating approach. By developing vignettes on process conflict, salient beliefs towards process conflicts were elicited among software employees in India. A questionnaire using Ajzen’s guidelines was administered. Structural equation modelling for 150 responses is used for testing path suitability and significance. Findings – Employees with positive attitude towards conflict, high CE and high SA intend to integrate during process conflict. Employees with low efficacy and who are influenced by the action of their role model intend to dominate during process conflict. Research limitations/implications – The study is contextualized to Indian software employees. Findings should not be generalized until replicated in samples from other settings. Practical implications – This study will help practitioners in understanding the various elements that play role in a process conflict and also help in developing appropriate interventions in managing conflicts. This can be done by identifying and resolving issues related to unfavourable attitude and behavioural norms towards process conflicts. Originality/value – This study is the first to examine the efficacy of the TPB model in predicting multiple conflict-handling intentions among Indian software companies.

Abstract:
AbstractThere are disagreements about the key factors affecting a line manager’s conflict management modes. Psychologists emphasise the role of the conflict situation and personal traits, while other scholars focus on the impact of organisational aspects in managing interpersonal conflict. This paper provides empirical evidence suggesting that three sets of factors, namely, situational, personal and organisational aspects, influence the mode of handling conflict by line managers. Mixed methods were used to collect primary data from 19 line managers and two human resources managers working in two Irish subsidiaries of multinational companies. Although the research design did not allow for a verification of whether each of those three sets of factors has a significant influence on managing conflict by line managers, the paper suggests that combining psychological and managerial approaches to managing conflict provides a fuller understanding of handling interpersonal conflict. It also provides original findings on how line managers handle interpersonal conflicts, contributing to a better understanding of the under-researched area of the actual role of line managers in dealing with negative HR aspects.

Abstract:
Transportation problem is one of the problems that is faced in Tasikmalaya City especially at the intersection. Congestion problems and traffic conflicts often occur at a signal especially in intersection on Siliwangi road Tasikmalaya. One of the efforts made to reduce traffic conflicts and optimize the performance of the junction is by setting up the junction and optimizing the Simpang. The purpose of this research is to know the performance of intersection on Siliwangi road Tasikmalaya and provide recommendations for precise handling, as well as analyzing the traffic conflicts that occurred in the junction. The method used in the performance analysis of the junction signal is to use the calculations in the PKJI 2014, while for analysis of traffic conflicts used to determine the severity of the conflict at the intersection on Siliwangi road Tasikmalaya is using the method Traffic Conflict Technique (TCT). After analysis, the performance in the intersection on Siliwangi road Tasikmalaya Tasikmalaya has approached the critical number of the degree of saturation (DS) of 0.7 with level D. In addition to these problems, there is a traffic conflict crossing as many as 230 events (55%), merging as many as 145 events (35%) and diverging as many as 41 occurrences (10%). With the handling and recommendation of phase setting and cycle time setting, it is proven to suppress and minimize the decline of junction performance level to C level with the value of saturation of 0.58. This will also impact the reduction in the amount of traffic conflicts that occur.Keyword : intersection, traffic conflict, PKJI 2014, phase, cycle time

There are limitations in existing conflict management instruments used in China. Therefore, we translated the Dutch Test of Conflict Handling (DUTCH), and then examined the reliability and validity of this Chinese Revised version (DUTCH-CR). Participants were 2,035 college students at 4 universities in China. We conducted exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis on data from questionnaires completed by the participants. Our findings show that the DUTCH-CR is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring the handling of conflicts between Chinese college students. Further, we found that 4 conflict-handling styles are more suitable for Chinese college students. This was achieved by merging the problem-solving and compromising factors into a collaborating one, and retaining the yielding, avoiding, and forcing factors of the original DUTCH instrument.

Abstract Despite the fact that model composition paradigm becomes very important and most commonly used, the support for their cooperation has not reached its full strength, especially in managing composition conflicts, because it’s often divided between and confused with other model composition features. This makes handling and dealing with these conflicts a crucial activity in the composition process. Models need to be put under version control in order to manage the probable conflicts, facilitate collaboration and control change. Therefore, a solution for detecting and resolving conflicts is needed. In this paper, we present a composition conflict resolver presented in the form of a repository that helps manage composition conflicts and analyse the model and operations performed on it.

AbstractCollaborative design conflicts are an important type of process “exception,” that is, a real-life contingency such as a process change, execution error, or missed opportunity that leads to suboptimal performance of a collaborative process. This paper presents an integrated computational approach to collaborative process exception handling that avoids important weaknesses in current conflict management methods through the synergistic integration of conflict, workflow, and rationale technology. The approach is based upon an inclusive dependency language plus coordination services for dependency capture, process enactment, and exception handling. An initial implementation of this method called “iDCSS” is presented and challenges for future evolution of this technology are identified.

Abstract:
Conflict arises as a result of various forms of difference and importance, but the most common is the difference of opinion. As happened to the community of Mempawah Districts, there was an indication of heresy that runs by the Fajar Nusantara Movement Group (Gafatar). Gafatar had opposite goals with what the local and central government has implemented. This research is to design a model for handling conflicts between Gafatar and the community in the law approach. The research method applied is qualitative. Data collection used interview technique, documentation technique, and narratives. The results of this study have designed models for handling conflicts between Gafatar and the Mempawah community in a legal approach. The research has also emphasized the role of the state and the its military and security apparatus to keep order and solve tribal issues. Resolving the Gafatar group conflict with West Kalimantan MUI is the central case of this study.

Abstract:
Handling conflicts with students is a part of most educators' academic lives. Surprisingly little research, however, has investigated student perceptions of sources of conflict or instructor responses to disputes. To gain insight into faculty–student conflict, we administered a survey to 122 undergraduates. Students indicated that they frequently communicated with professors regarding conflicts and were usually dissatisfied with their instructors' responses. We evaluated sources of conflict, faculty responses, and students' preferred responses to provide instructors with detailed information on students' perceptions. Potential benefits of understanding students' perceptions and preferences include improved course satisfaction and attitudes toward learning for students and maintenance of academic standards and heightened job satisfaction for faculty.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to show how outsourcing partners can maximise the benefits of outsourcing while containing the negative effect of destructive conflict (the “bad apple”) on trust and commitment. Design/methodology/approach The study reviewed existing literature on the benefits and limitations of outsourcing from the principal’s (outsourcer) and the agent’s (service provider) perspectives. The study further draws on empirical evidence from studies conducted across ten industries in three countries within the Asia–Pacific Rim and the Middle-East, namely, Australia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. Findings Long-term orientation and ethical norms are robust ex-ante (i.e. before the destructive conflict) handling strategies, whereas integrative conflict handling style and (to a lesser degree) accommodating and compromising conflict handling styles are effective ex-post (i.e. after the destructive conflict) handling strategies. Forcing and avoidance conflict handling styles can escalate destructive conflict and should be completely avoided by outsourcing partners at all times. Practical implications The benefits of outsourcing outweigh its challenges. Trust and commitment are positively affected by ex-ante and ex-post (destructive conflict) strategies. Destructive conflicts (or the bad apple effect) can be contained through these strategies. Firms should leverage the upsides of outsourcing relationships and contain the downsides by integrating long-term orientation and ethical norms that can help to pre-empt and forestall destructive conflict. They should adopt an integrative conflict handling strategy in the event of a manifest conflict. Other strategies that can be applied to manifest conflict (albeit more sparingly) are accommodating and compromising strategies. Each has the potential to increase trust and commitment in the relationship. Originality/value The authors unveil before and after (the destructive conflict) handling strategies that do not depend on contextual factors or industry/sectoral differences.

Abstract:

Efficient conflict-free routing scheduling of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in automated logistic systems can improve delivery time, prevent delays, and decrease handling cost. Once potential conflicts present themselves on their road ahead, AGVs may wait for a while until the potential conflicts disappear besides altering their routes. Therefore, AGV conflict-free routing scheduling involves making routing and waiting time decisions simultaneously. This work constructs a conflict-free routing scheduling model for AGVs with consideration of waiting time. The process of the model is based on calculation of the travel time and conflict analysis at the links and nodes. A guided ant colony optimization (GACO) algorithm, in which ants are guided to avoid conflicts by adding a guidance factor to the state transition rule, is developed to solve the model. Simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the model and the solution method.

Abstract:
In the election, the conflict will always exist. Whether it is a conflict between the election participants, between the participants and the election organizers or among the election organizers itself. The purpose of this research is to analyze the contribution of the Election Conflict Regulation on handling the election conflict in Sijunjung Regency and to analyze the response of the conflicting parties to the usage of the Election Conflict Regulation in Sijunjung District. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study plan. To see this problem, the researcher used Ralf Dahrendorf's Conflict Theory of Regulation which explains that conflict regulation can affect the high and low escalation of conflicts that occurred. The results showed that in the resolution of conflicts that had occurred both in the 2015 Regional Heads Election conflict or the conflict during the preparation of the 2019 General Election, researcher found that the General Election Conflict Regulation played a role / contributed in resolving the conflicts, where the conflicts could be controlled and resolved properly without any increase in violence. This was proven by the conflicting parties that accepted the decision given by the authorities in its settlement plus there were no other conflicting actors involved in the conflict.

Abstract:
In 1976 Nils Christie gave a lecture at the University of Sheffield and suggested that conflicts in society performed certain positive functions. Conflicts are “property,” he argued, and belong to the people involved. The participants in conflict may wish to see them resolved in ways that satisfy them, but sometimes those conflicts are taken away and become the property of courts, judges, lawyers or social workers. Christie contends that conflicts make an important contribution to society, and that highly industrialized societies have too little rather than too much internal conflict. He feels that we must organize social systems so that conflicts are nurtured and made visible. In particular we must see to it that professionals do not monopolize the handling of conflicts. In our criminal justice systems, the victims of crime have in particular lost their rights to participate in conflict resolution. In this paper we use Christie's concept of “stealing conflicts” as a tool for analysing the consequences of the increased use of lawyers in the juvenile justice system as a result of theYoung Offenders Act. TheActpurports to enhance juveniles' responsibility and accountability for their actions, but this end is undermined to the extent that lawyers steal the conflicts. Furthermore, we argue that this trend toward legalism, which characterizes North America today, is different from patterns in some European countries such as France.

Abstract:
Conflicts occur on construction projects and may degenerate into unpleasant situations such as claims, lawsuits and project abandonment. This research investigated the frequency and correlates of conflicts in identified conflict centers on projects procured with either the traditional method or integrated methods. Conflicts were measured in terms of their frequencies of occurrence. Five internal conflict centers on construction projects were identified and used. Questionnaires were administered through purposive and snowballing techniques on 274 projects located in twelve states and Abuja in Nigeria. 96 usable responses were obtained. The collected data were subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The most critical area of conflict was around resources for project execution on projects executed with the integrated procurement method, while the most critical area of conflicts on projects executed with the traditional method was conflict arising from administrative procedures. There were significant correlations between overall satisfaction with project procurement and the frequency of conflicts. However, the results of the analyses do not suggest that any significant correlations exist between the method used for the procurement of the projects and the frequency of conflicts on the projects. The study recommends that the central place of the person, the psychological make-up and personality of team members, instead of structure, may be variables to watch out for with respect to frequency of conflicts, handling of conflicts and overall satisfaction with project procurement. It is recommended that similar analyses can be done on the basis of intensity or seriousness of conflicts.

Abstract:
Legal Politics the Handling of the Plantation Conflict by the Government in Creating the Social Justice Indonesia is a agraris country, where economic and society lifes depend on agriculture product. It makes agriculture problems become the main problem for indonesian. One of agriculture problem in Indonesia is land plantation disputes that cause a conflict on plantation business. The majority of conflicts occur between farmers and plantation companies that cause many losses, both material and non-material. Plantation conflicts need to be handled properly so that the main objective of plantation management can be achieved. When conflict occurs, government is the most authorized party to handle it, the objective and impartial parties of either party in conflict. It is necessary to have a legal policy on handling of plantation conflicts by the government which gives a sense of justice for the parties.

Abstract:
AbstractJunior designers are not trained to cope with critical situations and conflict at work. Most design schools do not educate their design students to prepare them for (potential) conflict. As a result, junior designers often do not have conflict-handling skills to handle critical situations and conflicts. While some tools and methods exist to help them make responsible design choices, these often address value differences underlying (potential) conflict without taking the perspective of the designer, and thus without supporting young designers to start by reflecting on their own intrinsic values. The aim of this study is to find a way to help junior designers to reflect effectively on critical situations, thereby improving their conflict-handling skills. Data was collected through four steps in an action research. Researchers collaborated with an identity programme for junior design professionals. Insights from try-outs and small interventions were transferred into design requirements for an approach to educate and facilitate junior design professionals to reflect more effectively on critical situations.

Abstract:
The toll of civil conflict is largely borne by civilian populations, as warring factions target non-combatants through campaigns of violence. But significant variation exists in the extent to which warring groups abuse the civilian population: across conflicts, across groups, and within countries geographically and over time. Using a new dataset on fighting groups in Sierra Leone, this article analyzes the determinants of the tactics, strategies, and behaviors that warring factions employ in their relationships with noncombatants. We first describe a simple logic of extraction which we use to generate hypotheses about variation in levels of abuse across fighting units. We then show that the most important determinants of civilian abuse are internal to the structure of the faction. High levels of abuse are exhibited by warring factions that are unable to police the behavior of their members because they are more ethnically fragmented, rely on material incentives to recruit participants, and lack mechanisms for punishing indiscipline. Explanations that emphasize the importance of local community ties and contestation do not find strong support in the data.

Abstract:
This paper is split into two parts. The first half analyzes conflicts of interests’ effects on judgment, the harms these effects threaten, and our current policies and practices for handling conflicts of interest. This analysis relies on scholarship in several fields, most prominently psychology, all of which have reasons to worry about conflicts of interest. This analysis will show that our current classifications of conflicts of interest and our current strategies for handling conflicts of interest are confusing, of dubious benefit, or both. The second half provides some tools for helping us to limit or avoid the harms of conflicts of interest. These simple tools focus on how we think about and classify conflicts of interest. Specifically, I recommend beginning to classify conflicts of interest in a new way: as either severable or systemic. These new classifications are not intended to be heavy conceptual machinery, but simple and valuable tools. These new classifications, even though they are not meant to be exhaustive or comprehensive, help delineate tractable strategies and help determine the distribution of responsibilities for addressing specific conflicts of interest.

Abstract:
This article is aimed to analyze the need for handling social conflict through the planting of tolerance values in multicultural societies that in line with statutory provisions. It is a socio-religious study that, to some extent, applies a legal approach. A library study was conducted by collecting data and information from textbooks, scientific journals, website contents. The legal analysis was based on principles and norms contained in legislation and regulations. It applies Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The study suggested that planting tolerance values ??is a grand and noble concept that would become an organic part of Indonesia. Tolerance is functioned as a guardian, safeguard, peace-maker, and unifier communication and interaction to realize good relations between community members. Besides, the law on handling of social conflict has covered the mechanism to address this matter by means of conflict prevention, cessation of conflicts, and post-conflict recovery.
