HARZHAUSER, MATHIAS, and BERNARD LANDAU. "Turritellidae (Gastropoda) of the Miocene Paratethys Sea with considerations about turritellid genera." Zootaxa 4681, no. 1 (2019): 1–136. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.4681.1.1.

Abstract:
We present a critical evaluation of the taxonomy, stratigraphy and biogeography of the turritellid gastropods of the Miocene Paratethys Sea. 159 species-level names and 6 infrasubspecific names have been used for Paratethyan Turritellidae since 1848. Of these, only 35 species are accepted herein as valid species, with some uncertainties due to poor preservation or limited access to type material. Maximum diversities occurred during the early middle Miocene (Langhian, Badenian) coinciding with the Miocene Climatic Optimum. Whilst early Miocene turritellid assemblages are characterized by large to very large species of Peyrotia, Turritella and Allmonia, middle Miocene assemblages are predominated by medium-sized species of Archimediella, Helminthia, Oligodia and Ptychidia. The taxonomic composition of these faunas, with representatives of Archimediella, Helminthia, Mesalia and Vermicularia suggests a biogeographic affiliation with Atlantic and especially West African faunas. Turritellinella new gen. is established as new genus for the eastern Atlantic-Mediterranean Turritella tricarinata/communis complex. Viennella is described as new genus with Turritella incisaeformis Csepreghy-Meznerics 1956 as type species. Allmonia new gen. is introduced as new genus for European Cenozoic Protominae previously placed in Protoma. For the first time, inner lirae are documented as conchological features of Turritellidae. Six species are described as new, three within the Turritellinae: Archimediella carpathica new sp., Ptychidia erynella new sp. and Viennella ignorata new sp., and three within the Pareorinae: Mesalia sovisi new sp., Mesalia stryriaca new sp. and Mesalia bohnhavasae new sp.. Ptychidia austrorotundata new nom. is proposed as new name Turritella turris rotundata Schaffer 1912, non Turritella rotundata Grzybowski 1899. We designate lectotypes for Turritella gradata Menke in Hörnes, 1855, Haustator striatellatus Sacco, 1895, Allmonia carniolica (Stache, 1858) and Allmonia alterniplicata (Sacco, 1895). Neotypes are designated for Archimediella abundans (Handmann, 1882), Archimediella hoernesi (Rolle, 1856), Ptychidia partschi (Rolle, 1856), Ptychidia? ernesti (Handmann, 1882). Rhabdosis Townes, 1970 (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) is a junior homonym of Rhabdosis Handmann 1882 (Gastropoda, Turritellidae) and will need a new name.

Abstract:
AbstractGiven a metric space (X , d), equipped with a locally finite Borel measure, a measurable set $A \subseteq X$ is a density set if the points where A has density 1 are exactly the points of A. We study the topological complexity of the density sets of the real line with Lebesgue measure, with the tools—and from the point of view—of descriptive set theory. In this context a density set is always in $\Pi _3^0$. We single out a family of true $\Pi _3^0$ density sets, an example of true $\Sigma _2^0$ density set and finally one of true $\Pi _2^0$ density set.

Abstract:
This paper proposes an analysis of the legal aspects present in the narrative of “The Handmaid´s Tale”, a novel by Margaret Atwood. First published in 1985, and heavily influenced by second-wave feminism, “The Handmaid´s Tale” addresses, mainly, the matter of gender inequality, once it creates a reality in which fertile women are compelled to reproduce through a servitude system. Through a rupture with the Cartesian dichotomy whose dualist notion separates objectivity from subjectivity, reason from emotion, this paper exposes that this oppression is not a literary creation by Atwood, but a reproduction of the power relations put forward in the history of humankind. In this regard, it is explored how Literature can aid the Law in facing the questions that come up in the resolution of legal and social problems. Besides gender inequality, it is possible to spot in the novel several violations concerning the principle of human dignity. Therefore, this research analyzes the legal provisions taken in the fictional space of Gilead, as well as in the country that preceded it, the United States of America, as well as in Brazil. In addition, it studies the symbolic violence to which women are submitted in Gilead and how it relates to the experiences lived by contemporary Brazilian women.

Abstract:
Analysis of the microbial, physicochemical and nutritional qualities of some commercially bottled and handmade fruit juices showed that total viable bacteria in bottle juices ranged from 9.6×107 to 2.0×1011 cfu/100 ml and handmade juices 1.3×105 to 9.6×107 cfu/100 ml. The log mean values of total bacteria count ranged from 9.14-10.19 cfu/100 ml (bottled) and 6.09-9.08 cfu/100 ml (handmade).Total coliform bacteria ranged from 0-7.6×109 cfu/100 ml (bottled) and 0 - 2.8×105 cfu /100 ml (handmade) with a range of log mean values of 3.18-6.95 cfu/100 ml (bottled) and 3.47-3.48 cfu/100 ml (handmade). The pH was acidic and mean value ranged from 3.14-4.03 for bottled juice and 3.72-3.73 (handmade). It was found that total soluble solids ranged from 10-11.33% for bottle and 11.33-12.33% for handmade juices. The concentration of vitamin C in bottled and handmade juices ranged from 0.74-2.22 mg/100 ml and 2.34-3.7 mg/100 ml, respectively, indicated that vitamin C content was very low. It was also revealed that quality of bottled and handmade juices was unsatisfactory and may not be useful for consumption. It is suggested that proper measure must be taken and manufacturing companies should develop the quality by maintaining hygiene and using good quality ingredients in preparing different types of juices.

Abstract:
A handmade carpet is one of the most well-known handcrafts around the world. Iranian handmade carpets are known as luxury products in domestic and international markets due to their strength and product value. The main objective of this research is to apply a geographical information system (GIS)-based, spatially-explicit approach to assess the sustainability of handmade carpet production in the East Azerbaijan Province of Iran, which is internationally famous for the diversity and quality of its handmade carpets. To achieve this goal, we employed 23 criteria in four main clusters: population characteristics, education status, employment status, and business activities related to the carpet industry. In order to determine the significance of each criterion, an integrated approach of fuzzy and network analysis processes was applied. Accordingly, the GIS aggregation function was employed to map and identify the areas that are suitable and of high potential for handmade carpet production. The results indicate that there is a very high potential for handmade carpet production in some areas of Tabriz, Osku, Marageh, Heris, and Meyaneh counties. However, high sustainability also extends to some areas in Marand, Bonab, and Kalaybar counties. The obtained maps present the potential of each city and village for handmade carpet production. The research also aims to evaluate and suggest relevant policies and practices to overcome the identified challenges in order to promote, develop, and preserve the handmade carpet sector. The results of this research are of great importance for different stakeholders in the handmade production and for decision makers and authorities in the East Azerbaijan Province. The results can be used to determine the potential of each area for handmade carpet production and to highlight potential challenges. This research also presents a new approach for sustainability assessments in studies on handcrafts and, in particular, carpets.

Abstract:
According to the opinion of the authors, the main component of the urban culture of Volgograd is realogic identity. They argue the idea that being and existence of things in connection with the life of citizens, which is expressed in the creation, exchange, representation of material objects in handmade art format can serve as an important resource for gaining the new city image and culture of the city status. The article reveals the cultural function as a specific phenomenon of handmade artisan creativity and its importance as a special form of activity of the creative community in the culture of modern cities on the example of Volgograd. In addition to the universal (in the urban sense) creative functions and upcycling (empowering new life of old things in the so-called “repair society” by hand makers), as well as self-realization and self-handmade-presentation, the article highlights such previously unexplored handmade functions as communicational, consolidating and accumulative and representational functions associated with the ability to combine creativity handmade urban master craftsmen in community and even the community, successfully contributing to promote the image of the city of Volgograd as a culture and to express the identity of the city, acting as a symbolic and realogic brand Volgograd. They explore the basic directions of handmade in Volgograd in the aspect of micro-urbanism, as well as ways and forms of existence of real practices, folding in the city community and environment in real and virtual cultural and urban space. The authors analyze the handmade practice and Volgograd community, linking them to the specific characteristics of the modern city culture, urban identity and opportunities for urban planning and development in the field of regional cultural policy and tourism and, ultimately, with the prospect of Volgograd become a city of culture on the basis of use realogic resource handicraft handmade creation.

Full text
Abstract:
The publication considers handmade lamps from Tyras, which are stored in the scientific funds of the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of Ukraine and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Local History Museum. Lighting devices are divided into five types by shape: from semi-closed post-Hellenistic forms with an elongated nozzle, to wide-open forms, so-called boat-shaped lamps. Of particular interest are several rare forms (the 6th type) that are difficult to correlate with any type. All items in this publication are dated by the period from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD. In addition, the authors managed to find similar analogies not only in the North-Western Black Sea region, but also beyond its borders.
Handmade lamps were not items of mass production and were not intended to be widely traded. Nevertheless, they were used not massively, at a considerable area from the Northwest Black Sea coast to the Cimmerian Bosporus during the period from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD. The abovementioned lamps, unlike certain types of handmade wares, can not be used as an ethno-indicative feature. During the periods of political and economic destabilization, the decline of crafts and trade could have led to the need for the production of handmade wares and lamps in particular.

Abstract:
Patterns of handmade embroidery are an important part of the culture of a number of African people, particularly in Nigeria. The need to digitally document these patterns emerges in the context of its low patronage despite its quality and richness. The development of a database will assist in resuscitating the dying art of Handmade Embroidery Patterns (HEP). The patterns of handmade embroidery are also irregular and inconsistent due to the manual method, and creativity involved in its production. Developing an automatic recognition of HEP will therefore create a system where machine embroidery can be made, or automated to mimic the creativity and peculiar intricacies of traditional handmade embroidery patterns. This study developed handmade embroidery pattern database (HEPD) that can be used for many processes in the field of pattern recognition and computer vision applications. Samples of handmade embroidery patterns were collected from three different cities in South-Western, Nigeria. Pre-processing operations such as image enhancement, image noise reduction, and morphology were performed on the collected samples using image-processing toolbox in MATLAB. This work developed a validated new dataset of handmade embroidery patterns containing two categories of embroidery patterns with a total number of 315 images in the database. It evaluated the database for recognition process using cellular automata as feature extraction technique and support vector machine as its classifier. The performance metrics employed are sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. For the two classes of images considered, 72% sensitivity, specificity of 93% and accuracy of 80% were obtained for grayscale image. For the binary image, an accuracy of 72% with sensitivity of 82% and 65% specificity were obtained. The result obtained showed that the grayscale image exhibits an efficient accuracy than binary image.

With the development of digital reproduce technology for traditional Chinese painting, the current demand for high quality “digital xuan paper” and the requirements for its quality is increasing. Handmade xuan paper as the most basic and important material in traditional Chinese painting works, its unique brush pattern and click texture is not available in the “digital xuan paper” dedicated to the digital copy. Therefore, in the reproduction process for traditional Chinese painting, in addition to the rigorous reproduce process, the most important condition to obtain high-fidelity replication products is choosing a type of paper that meet the characteristics of traditional Chinese painting. Based on the digital inkjet technology in this paper, handmade xuan paper chose as the object was modified to obtain the technical requirements of digital reproduce by surface sizing process. Through the study process of different composition sizing agent and different sizing technology, find not only the Influence law of sizing technology and formula on tone level, clarity and color aspects of handmade xuan paper, but also the sizing technology and formula required for modifying handmade xuan paper to comply with part of Index in digital inkjet reproduce process. Through this thesis can provide a reference for handmade xuan paper in the field of digital reproduce technology.

Abstract:
AbstractThe crystallinity indices (CrI) of Chinese handmade papers were investigated using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. Four Chinese handmade papers, Yingchun, Zhuma, Yuanshu and Longxucao papers were used as model substrates of mulberry bark, ramie, bamboo and Eulaliopsis binata papers, respectively. Two forms of the paper samples, paper sheets and their comminuted powders, were used in this study. The results showed that their XRD patterns belong to the cellulose-I type and Iβ dominates the cellulose microstructure of these paper samples. Moreover, it was found that the microstructures and CrIs of cellulose of these papers were changed by the grinding treatment. This work suggested that the sheet form of the handmade papers is suitable to determine CrI by XRD, despite the contribution of non-cellulosic components in the papers. The order of CrIs for these paper sheet samples was Yingchun, Zhuma, Longxucao and Yuanshu papers. Besides CrIs, differences in cross-sectional areas of the crystalline zone of cellulose can be used for comparing different types of handmade papers. It was also found that the CrIs and crystallite size of paper cellulose varied between the sheet samples and the powder samples, illustrating that the pulverisation has a negative influence on the microstructure of the handmade papers.

Abstract:
AbstractPictures are a quintessential source of aesthetic pleasure. This makes it easy to forget that they are epistemically valuable no less than they are aesthetically so. Pictures are representations. As such, they may furnish us with knowledge of the objects they represent. In this article I provide an account of why photographs are of greater epistemic utility than handmade pictures. To do so, I use a novel approach: I seek to illuminate the epistemic utility of photographs by situating both photographs and handmade pictures among the sources of knowledge. This method yields an account of photography's epistemic utility that better connects the issue with related issues in epistemology and is relatively superior to other accounts. Moreover, it answers a foundational issue in the epistemology of pictorial representation: ‘What kinds of knowledge do pictures furnish?’ I argue that photographs have greater epistemic utility than handmade pictures because photographs are sources of perceptual knowledge, while handmade pictures are sources of testimonial knowledge.

The handmade bicycle industry has grown exponentially over the past decade. Although existing for decades in much smaller numbers, the popularity and credibility of framebuilder entrepreneurship–custom, handmade bike frames–has increased significantly in the past 10 years. The companies that specialize in custom-producing bicycle frames vary in size, scope, reputation, profitability, and even building materials.

Abstract:
Many community development organizations seek to involve their clients in projects through partnerships. This paper addresses the partnership model of the North Carolina-based organization HandMade in America and its Small Towns Revitalization Program. Ethnography plays an important role in this investigation. I spent the summer of 2004 as an intern at HandMade in America (HandMade), collecting ethnographic data in order to create a survey measuring the impact that the Small Towns program is having on the quality of residents' lives. While sitting in numerous living rooms and kitchens talking with men and women, old and young, local and newcomer, it became clear that while there are similarities across the region, each town has its own resources and problems that dictate the concerns of its residents.

Abstract:
The focus of this study was toexamine the popularity of handmade products among consumersthrough a survey. We shed light on the effect of the socio-demographic factorssuch as agender identity, age, education, and income level, onconsumer behavior (frequency of purchase, purchase considerations, most popular place of purchase),and consumer demand. The results point out that handmade products are becoming increasingly popular. The surveyed consumers chose high-quality food, which can be beneficial for the manufacturers of handmade products. Hence, we suggest that providing local services and products can be an ideal opportunity to generate income in rural regions. Since only 51 people were surveyed,we are aware that our work cannot be representative, and further data collectionand analysisareplanned for future work.

Abstract:
The outcome-based learning is leading and has set a new trend in innovative class-room instructions. In Chemistry, the solid-state structures and composite materials are covered in classroom due to its use in day to day life. In this paper attempt is made to present novel handmade model as a tool that provides a desired link between the unit cell representation and extended structure. This model offers visualization stacking pattern that provides simple- unit cell, body- centered and face -centered cubic and hexagonal closed packed cell. Preparing and using molecular handmade model in Teaching-Learning is significant and has a positive impact on academic achievement. The students handmade models acts as a tool for teaching and it has considerable importance in Science education. Totally 40 students of Grade 12 are selected as the sample for the present study. Students are divided into two sets - experimental group and control group. Each group consists of 20 students. Students of the experimental group are asked to make handmade model of unit cells. This handmade model of cells and pieces combines into three corresponding crystal shapes and through this students are taught about the primitive cell of solid state. The control group is taught by using traditional chalk and talk method. The present study is experimental in nature. The pre-test and post-test equivalent group design is used for collecting data. The mean deviation and difference of mean are computed for both groups. The significant differences of both the experimental and the control group based on the variables of pre-test and post-test are tested at 0.05 level by applying t-test. On the completion of statistical analysis of data and research it is concluded that the handmade model of the primitive cells of solid state unit of Chemistry has significant positive effect on the academic achievement of the students in Chemistry at Senior Secondary School level. Based on the findings it is recommended that teachers should use outcome based Teaching-Learning approach to move up student’s achievement in core subjects.

Abstract:
Banana fibre is a natural fibre with high strength, which can be blended easily with cotton fibre or synthetic fibre to produce composite material. In the fiber extraction process, a substantial amount of lignocellulosic wastes are generated, disposal of which creates problem in the adjacent area. In this paper, extracted banana fiber (EBF) and waste banana fiber (WBF) were characterized in terms of chemical and morphological properties to produce handmade paper. WBF was characterized with lower α–cellulose, lignin content and longer fiber length. Pulping of EBF and WBF was carried out with varying active alkali and cooking time at boiling temperature. Pulp yield of WBF was 35.9% after 120 min of cooking with 8% alkali charge. In the unbeaten state the degrees of drainage resistance i.e. SR values were 65 and 71 for EBF and WBF, respectively. The tensile, burst and tear indices of WBF were 23.7 N.m/g, 2.2 kPa.m2/g and 5.0 mN.m2/g, respectively; these were much lower as compared to EBF. These values however, meet the requirement for handmade paper.Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res.53(2), 83-88, 2018
