Abstract:
Hankou was once the host city of a large group of native banks or Qianzhuang in China. This case study examines the local archives to explore their urban origins, business customs and internal dynamics of Qianzhuang in Hankou from the mid-1800s. Despite all their struggles, Hankou Qianzhuang disappeared almost inconspicuously in 1952. The archival evidences from the local sources indicate that their formal dissolution had resulted more from political changes than from their inability to serve modern businesses or resistance against ruling orders. These new findings may contribute to China’s monetary history literature, particularly on the role of native-place ties and traditional features in structuring the conduct of business in China.

Using contemporary journalism and archival material, this article is concerned with the construction of the Canton–Hankow (Hankou) Railway, a strategically important route and a product of international competition and influence. It argues that the line's construction between 1898 and 1937 witnessed a transition from speculative to bilateral investment, the latter comprising Britain's share of the Boxer Indemnity fund. It details China's keenness for the fund to be directed towards completing the railway and proposes that the opportunity to reduce the overcapacity of British manufacturing industries in a depressed market through exports has parallels in contemporary China's international railway construction projects.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 1896, the Russian empire established a territorial concession in the Chinese treaty port of Hankou. Russian activity in the treaty ports has usually been subsumed into a wider ‘European’ or ‘Western’ presence, the assumption being that the Russian empire copied existing British and French concessions. This article traces the development of the idea of establishing a Russian concession from its inception to the early years of its development. The various arguments made at different stages in this process make clear that the decision was not a simple case of imitation of existing concessions, but was reached in the context of a broader shift in ideas about the proper relationship between economy, nation, and the Russian imperial state.

Reservoir regulation make conditions of sediment under the dam change greatly after impoundment of the Three Gorges Project. This paper analyzes change trend and abrupt change situation of incoming sediment and studies characteristics of new sediment of Yichang and Hankou Stations after impoundment of the Three Gorges with Mann-Kendall nonparametric rank test method. The result indicates that after operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir, annual sediment runoff changed suddenly and sediment runoff reduced sharply in Yichang and Hankou Stations; sediment entering the Yichang-Wuhan reach decreases substantially and it almost can be regarded as clean water discharge. Research shows unsaturated degree of the clear water released from reservoirs decreased after obtaining sediment along the river, so the sediment discharge would be partly recovered.

The result indicates that operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir has leveled runoff process and shortened dry season and extended median water period; After operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir, monthly river runoff of several months in both of Yichang and Hankou Stations changed abruptly. However, so far as time of abrupt change is concerned, sudden change of annual river runoff or monthly river runoff has little to do with operation of the Three Gorges Project.

Abstract:
Low flow is a seasonal phenomenon which is a critical requirement for utilization of water resources under rapidly changing environmental conditions. The operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has had a great influence on downstream low flow in the Yangtze River. In this paper, the characteristics of low flow in the main Yangtze River were analyzed during the dry season before and after the TGD operation during the period of 1956–2016. The results show that: (1) the operation of the TGD has changed the spatial and temporal distribution of streamflow in the middle and lower Yangtze River and the annual mean low flow has increased significantly since the TGD operation. (2) The operation of the TGD could advance the date of the start of dry season in the lower Yangtze River basin. The start dates of the dry season in the Yichang, Hankou and Datong stations were advanced by 14 days, 10 days and 9 days, respectively. (3) The minimum streamflow in the lower Yangtze River has increased notably since the TGD operation. The minimum streamflow was raised by 42.91%, 13.76% and 6.06% at the Yichang, Hankou and Datong stations, respectively. The increasing number of dams in the world might have the potential effects on downstream low flow. More attention should be paid to investigating the influence of dam construction on low flow in rivers all over the world.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article investigates a series of projects for the improvement of shipping conditions of the Upper Yangzi in 1805-'40. The enterprise was undertaken by two Hankou merchants, one of whom published his 'Brief Account of the Taming of the Rapids'. An analysis of the detailed data of this source provides insights into navigation conditions and rates of environmental change on a major river, and into a major infrastructure project undertaken as merchant philanthropy. This paper proposes a perspective on water transport in pre-industrial China against a wider temporal and cultural backdrop, with a particular reference to private philanthropy as a set item within the moral economy.

Abstract:
The French concession of Hankow, the fourth and last French settlement established in China, was part of the five foreign settlements created in this city along the Yangtze River. Narrating the history of this neighbourhood from the first attempts at its creation to the retrocession through to the present shows the evolution of its place in urban space and of its representations. Its place being left poorly defined in the city confers to the concession a complex and ambiguous status. After the revocation, the district was neglected and discourses stigmatized the concession phenomenon. After disappearing from the preoccupations of urban development, this space reappears in the reflections of urbanists. Meanwhile, the political instrumentation of the concession's history changed radically. Discourses moved from denouncing imperialist invasion to bringing forward the precocious openness of the city. The perception of the concessions has changed. The phenomenon of rejection surrounding the concession has been replaced by its integration in the city's history. The analysis of historiographical production and heritage protection policy clearly demonstrates the passage of the concession from political instrumentation to economical exploitation

Abstract:
This thesis aims to further clarify the territorial deployment of foreign settlements in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although the period examined extends from 1846 to the retrocession of the last concessions in 1946, special emphasis is placed on the 1910s, a decade which spelled the end of expansionist logic. The first part analyzes the project of expansion led by the French Municipality of Tianjin from 1902 to 1946 in the Laoxikai District 老西開. This symbolic example serves both as pillar and springboard for writing a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements. The case study on Tianjin provides a clearer analysis that encompasses Shanghai and Hankou in the second part. Establishing a perspective on the three cities reveals the principles and conditions under which foreign imperialism evolved in China, where mutually competing forces played leading roles. Further, it captures and illustrates the mechanisms of exchange and compromise engaged with Chinese officials and urban citizens. It also discloses the difficult position and weakness of the Chinese State before and after the 1911 Revolution, and the complexity of the relationship between national and local authorities. Finally, it offers a unique vantage point from which to observe sections of Chinese society within the treaty ports whose forms of expression and protest experienced a significant turning point in the 1910s. Relationships between these intertwined evolutions challenge both the dominant historiographical narrative on Western triumphant imperialism and orthodox representations associated with Chinese "modern" nationalism

Abstract:
The nineteenth century district of Wuhan, located in the ancient city of Hankou, has been formed during China's trade openness in the second half of the XIXth century, when foreign concessions have been settled in the city. At the time, the district is distinguished by its modern architecture and urbanization resulting from a blending of Eastern and Western influences. Built without overall planning, it has demonstrated throughout its history a strength of reception of external cultures and a capacity for transformation without losing its traditional local identity. However, in the early twenty-first century, the historic district of Wuhan is in a declining situation, faced with the rapid metropolisation of the city. Local authorities launch a "networking" strategy in order to revitalize the old central districts. In this perspective, the rehabilitation project "Wuhan Tiandi" was born and revolves around a multimodal transportation station, located in the heart of the nineteenth century district. The old neighborhood has turned into a modern touristic and commercial area and its network of traditional streets is integrated to the metropolitan transport network. The issue of this thesis is built around this rehabilitation project : What are the effects of this urban regeneration project on the heritage district of Wuhan? What is the role of this project in the metropolisation process of this Chinese second-rank city? By answering these questions, the thesis shows the inseparable relationship between rehabilitation projects and the metropolisation of Wuhan. The thesis also seeks to reveal the pragmatic and interventionist posture of urban planning in China. Certainly, the way to safeguard the urban heritage depends on the interests of the market, but the most important actors of the projects are the State and the local governments

Abstract:
Hanoi, through a long history of several thousand years, has a very rich heritage heritage, memories of its development. These historical testimonies are expressed by the presence of material and intangible cultural values. Architecture is considered as a complete representative to identify these historical traces. However, for these old millennial urban centers like Hanoi, there is a symbiotic phenomenon. The preservation of ancient cultural values in the context of modernization is the source of the risk of neglect or abuse of cultural heritage. For developing countries, especially Asian countries such as Vietnam, the goal of rapid development to catch up and overtake developed countries is a strong desire. There is therefore a very strong stake for the conservation of traditional cultural values. This often leads to antagonistic relationships between conservation of historical heritage and development. Indeed, for a strong economic development, we sometimes need to ignore cultural and spiritual needs, directly related to community life. The architectural heritages suffer from "indifference" and divide the community. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a different approach to help us see that the cause of these problems is not only due to economic development needs, aspirations to enrich the community, but also a lack of information about values of the cultural heritage architecture. This is a gap in the management of local communities and in the awareness of the people. Such a requirement is to fill this gap. Therefore, I allow myself to submit my thesis under the theme Conservation and promotion of the values of the Đình architecture in the old district of Hanoi - the architectural and urban heritage of Vietnam

Abstract:
Some mathematical-physics applications can be translated for systems of integral equations characterized by operators of Wiener-Hopf-Hankel. This is the case of some electromagnetic waves diffraction problems. In this thesis, these operators with two specific types of Fourier symbols are analyzed: almost periodic and piecewise continuous. Relatively to the operators of Wiener-Hopf-Hankel with almost periodic Fourier symbols acting between Lebesgue spaces, some advances, that supply a invertibility and Fredholm property criterion, reached recently are described. Related, also, with some electromagnetic waves diffraction problems appear Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators acting between Bessel potentials spaces, that in the particular case of the smoothness indices of the related spaces to be null, that is, considering Lebesgue spaces, is proved that it is possible to reduce the problem of its invertibility to a in general simpler problem, that is of the verification if the equivalent Toeplitz minus Hankel operator is a Fredhom operator of null index. In the case of the Fourier symbols to be piecewise continuous functions it was gotten a sufficient condition so that they are Fredholm operators and a formula that allows computing the respective Fredholm index, as well as a necessary and sufficient condition so that such operators are Fredholm operators, since that the Fourier symbols verifies a certain relation of dependence.

Taking advantage of Conzen’s methodology, the building is tightly related with its plot, which means the certain building pattern can be described by examining the generation of the building arrangement within the plot. Simultaneously, the building pattern is highly affected by the plot pattern it is located. In view of these, plot patterns together with land property and site coding could be taken as the clue for understanding both building patterns and urban spatial configuration. 35 commercial blocks in Nanjing downtown areas are chosen as research samples. Firstly, the internal structure of the blocks will be studied by analyzing the patterns, functions and land utilities of its plots. Focusing on the site coding and regulation, the building arrangement could be clarified and mapped. The results will identify the urban spatial patterns in downtown of Nanjing by mapping the characteristics of plot size, shape, properties and boundary lines. Therefore, the method on describing urban spatial configuration in modern cities could be developed. Abstract:
A study on the history of urban morphology in China based on discourse analysis Limeng Zhang¹, Andong Lu¹ ¹School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nanjing University. Nanjing University Hankou Road 22#, Gulou District, Nanjing, China E-mail: 554361151@qq.com, andonglu@gmail.com Key words: urban morphology, terminology, discourse analysis Conference topics and scale: Literature review (Supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China, Grant No.: 51478215) Urban morphology is a method widely used in China in the field of urban design and urban conservation. Since its first introduction to the Chinese context about 20 years ago, the key ideas and concepts of urban morphology underwent a significant phenomenon of ‘lost in translation’. Different origins of morphological thoughts, different versions of translation, as well as different disciplinary context, have all together led to a chaotic discourse. This paper reviews the key Chinese articles in the field of urban morphology since 1982 and draws out a group of persistent keywords, such as evolution, axis, urban fringe belt, plan unit and plot, that characterize the morphological approach to urban issues. By reviewing the transformation of the definition of these keywords, this paper aims to generate an evolutionary map of landmark ideas and concepts, based on which, four stages in the development of urban morphology in China can be identified: emergence, growth, maturity, practice. The mapping methodology could be extrapolated to other words, and the obtained evolutionary map could be a basic tool for further study. References Conzen M. R. Abstract:
Very late stent thrombosis (ST) stent fracture (SF) increases restenosis rate of permanent drug eluting stents (DES). In fact, permanent stents after arterial remodeling (change of artery dimensions during atherosclerosis) process becomes a supportive part inside our body and this idea lead us to develop biodegradable stents which support till arterial remodeling and progressively degrade thereafter. In this research, cold gas dynamic spray technique, simply referred to as cold spray is introduced to spray micro particles on metallic plane and cylindrical substrate. Reference material for permanent stent, stainless steel, 316L is mixed with pure iron in different proportions to induce microgalvanic corrosion effect on as sprayed specimens. Although annealed 316L coatings indicate better ultimate strength, porosity and ductility, their degradation study signifies their poor degradability in Hank’s physiological solution. In contrast to that, immersion and potentiodynamic polarization tests under Hank’s physiological solution indicate that corrosion rate of as sprayed composite increases as amount of iron increases. More iron particles release more iron ions and increases corrosion rate in hanks solution.

Abstract:
Yihui Yang, Wei You, Yunlong Peng, Wowo Ding*, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nanjing University, No.22 Hankou Rd, Jiangsu 210093, P.R.China. E-mail:yi_hui_yang@outlook.com, youwei@nju.edu.cn, 249626020@qq.com, dww@nju.edu.cn,Phone number:15850561165, 13852293251, +86 25 83593020, Keyword: Residential plot, Apartment pattern, performance evaluation, wind environment Conference topics and scale: Tools of analysis in urban morphology Residential morphological patterns are reflection of people's living habits and tradition, local climate and building regulations, so that one of those factors could be studied through in order to understand residential morphological patterns. Based upon our previous study, we do know that in China living habits and local climate mainly influence the shape of residential buildings and apartment patterns, but we do not know whether the pattern of residential plots determined by FAR and sunshine hours are suitable for wind environment related to residential environmental quality. Therefore, it is very significant to evaluate wind environment within residential plots based on the apartment pattern controlled by various building codes. Our study focuses on the pattern of Slab apartments in Nanjing, which are mainly used in China, and selects 40 residential slices with different plot shapes, plot FAR, building heights and sizes. Based upon MATLAB, we have got all geometrical data between buildings among these slices to identify the spatial pattern character of each residential plot. Through evaluating wind environment of these slices by simulation we can obtain wind speed, pressure and age of air and choose the pattern of age of air as the main evaluation factor of wind performance. Correlation analysis will be made between the apartment patterns and pattern of age of air, by doing so, each typical space between buildings will be evaluated. Our study will reveal the relevance of apartment pattern and wind environment, which can be used to support and improve design in the future. References(95 words) Oke. T.
