Full textThe French concession of Hankow, the fourth and last French settlement established in China, was part of the five foreign settlements created in this city along the Yangtze River. Narrating the history of this neighbourhood from the first attempts at its creation to the retrocession through to the present shows the evolution of its place in urban space and of its representations. Its place being left poorly defined in the city confers to the concession a complex and ambiguous status. After the revocation, the district was neglected and discourses stigmatized the concession phenomenon. After disappearing from the preoccupations of urban development, this space reappears in the reflections of urbanists. Meanwhile, the political instrumentation of the concession's history changed radically. Discourses moved from denouncing imperialist invasion to bringing forward the precocious openness of the city. The perception of the concessions has changed. The phenomenon of rejection surrounding the concession has been replaced by its integration in the city's history. The analysis of historiographical production and heritage protection policy clearly demonstrates the passage of the concession from political instrumentation to economical exploitation

Full textThis thesis aims to further clarify the territorial deployment of foreign settlements in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although the period examined extends from 1846 to the retrocession of the last concessions in 1946, special emphasis is placed on the 1910s, a decade which spelled the end of expansionist logic. The first part analyzes the project of expansion led by the French Municipality of Tianjin from 1902 to 1946 in the Laoxikai District 老西開. This symbolic example serves both as pillar and springboard for writing a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements. The case study on Tianjin provides a clearer analysis that encompasses Shanghai and Hankou in the second part. Establishing a perspective on the three cities reveals the principles and conditions under which foreign imperialism evolved in China, where mutually competing forces played leading roles. Further, it captures and illustrates the mechanisms of exchange and compromise engaged with Chinese officials and urban citizens. It also discloses the difficult position and weakness of the Chinese State before and after the 1911 Revolution, and the complexity of the relationship between national and local authorities. Finally, it offers a unique vantage point from which to observe sections of Chinese society within the treaty ports whose forms of expression and protest experienced a significant turning point in the 1910s. Relationships between these intertwined evolutions challenge both the dominant historiographical narrative on Western triumphant imperialism and orthodox representations associated with Chinese "modern" nationalism

Full textThe nineteenth century district of Wuhan, located in the ancient city of Hankou, has been formed during China's trade openness in the second half of the XIXth century, when foreign concessions have been settled in the city. At the time, the district is distinguished by its modern architecture and urbanization resulting from a blending of Eastern and Western influences. Built without overall planning, it has demonstrated throughout its history a strength of reception of external cultures and a capacity for transformation without losing its traditional local identity. However, in the early twenty-first century, the historic district of Wuhan is in a declining situation, faced with the rapid metropolisation of the city. Local authorities launch a "networking" strategy in order to revitalize the old central districts. In this perspective, the rehabilitation project "Wuhan Tiandi" was born and revolves around a multimodal transportation station, located in the heart of the nineteenth century district. The old neighborhood has turned into a modern touristic and commercial area and its network of traditional streets is integrated to the metropolitan transport network. The issue of this thesis is built around this rehabilitation project : What are the effects of this urban regeneration project on the heritage district of Wuhan? What is the role of this project in the metropolisation process of this Chinese second-rank city? By answering these questions, the thesis shows the inseparable relationship between rehabilitation projects and the metropolisation of Wuhan. The thesis also seeks to reveal the pragmatic and interventionist posture of urban planning in China. Certainly, the way to safeguard the urban heritage depends on the interests of the market, but the most important actors of the projects are the State and the local governments

Full textHanoi, through a long history of several thousand years, has a very rich heritage heritage, memories of its development. These historical testimonies are expressed by the presence of material and intangible cultural values. Architecture is considered as a complete representative to identify these historical traces. However, for these old millennial urban centers like Hanoi, there is a symbiotic phenomenon. The preservation of ancient cultural values in the context of modernization is the source of the risk of neglect or abuse of cultural heritage. For developing countries, especially Asian countries such as Vietnam, the goal of rapid development to catch up and overtake developed countries is a strong desire. There is therefore a very strong stake for the conservation of traditional cultural values. This often leads to antagonistic relationships between conservation of historical heritage and development. Indeed, for a strong economic development, we sometimes need to ignore cultural and spiritual needs, directly related to community life. The architectural heritages suffer from "indifference" and divide the community. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a different approach to help us see that the cause of these problems is not only due to economic development needs, aspirations to enrich the community, but also a lack of information about values of the cultural heritage architecture. This is a gap in the management of local communities and in the awareness of the people. Such a requirement is to fill this gap. Therefore, I allow myself to submit my thesis under the theme Conservation and promotion of the values of the Đình architecture in the old district of Hanoi - the architectural and urban heritage of Vietnam

Some mathematical-physics applications can be translated for systems of integral equations characterized by operators of Wiener-Hopf-Hankel. This is the case of some electromagnetic waves diffraction problems. In this thesis, these operators with two specific types of Fourier symbols are analyzed: almost periodic and piecewise continuous. Relatively to the operators of Wiener-Hopf-Hankel with almost periodic Fourier symbols acting between Lebesgue spaces, some advances, that supply a invertibility and Fredholm property criterion, reached recently are described. Related, also, with some electromagnetic waves diffraction problems appear Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators acting between Bessel potentials spaces, that in the particular case of the smoothness indices of the related spaces to be null, that is, considering Lebesgue spaces, is proved that it is possible to reduce the problem of its invertibility to a in general simpler problem, that is of the verification if the equivalent Toeplitz minus Hankel operator is a Fredhom operator of null index. In the case of the Fourier symbols to be piecewise continuous functions it was gotten a sufficient condition so that they are Fredholm operators and a formula that allows computing the respective Fredholm index, as well as a necessary and sufficient condition so that such operators are Fredholm operators, since that the Fourier symbols verifies a certain relation of dependence.

Full textThis work consists mainly in the close study of a film. The bright night, regarded as a mirror within the works of marcel hanoun; the approach is a combination of semiotics and psychoanalysis. After presentation and sequencing of the film, the basic narrative components are examined (space, time, action, signification) space appears as structured alongside narrative lines rather than referential ones, opposing-linking elements from a dual and reversible world, diegetic time is replaced by a more fluid one which can be circulated in any direction, and progress and development are no longer based on linearity but on similarity and made of analogical dispersion. Another discourse emerges from the shattered diegesis, it appears as an underliying but temporary "order" taking the form in the film of a constant interplay between similarities and variations, repetition and digressions. An order no sooner appears that it is brought down and replaced by another one causing the film to be an absolute anti-synthesis. This study is followed by a survey of six other films in an attempt to underline the characteristics of marcel hanoun's cinematographic "style". The conclusion proposes a retrospective glance on the whole of his works

Full textThanks to the policy of "Doi moi", urban development in Vietnam in general and the evolution of urban lighting in particular have achieved considerable results. Some cities in Vietnam have been successful in creating an urban identity through their lighting policy. However, the lighting in the capital Hanoi, a city highly appreciated for its riches in cultural and architectural heritages, has not created any good impression. Especially, the lighting during the Millennium celebrations was such a disappointment even though it was taken care by the biggest company of the country and received an enormous amount of investment. In the context where urban lighting develops and becomes a factor of socioeconomic development and a good tool in promoting urban identity, the poor attraction of lighting contributed to the loss of several chances for development for Hanoi. The obligation of elaborating a lighting planning is a big challenge for the city, especially when the most recent city planning of Hanoi has even raised more doubts. Even if they can create a good lighting planning for Hà-Nội, one that saves energy and limits the impacts of the lighting on the environment, while meeting the needs of vision and security, one that also creates an urban identity, the lighting of Hanoi will not be able to take off as long as its uncompetitive and non-transparent market will continue to reign

Full textIn this thesis we consider Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators with Fourier symbols in the class of almost periodic, semi-almost periodic and piecewise almost periodic functions. In the first place, we consider Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators acting between L2 Lebesgue spaces with possibly different Fourier matrix symbols in the Wiener-Hopf and in the Hankel operators. In the second place, we consider these operators with equal Fourier symbols and acting between weighted Lebesgue spaces Lp(R;w), where 1 < p < 1 and w belongs to a subclass of Muckenhoupt weights. In addition, singular integral operators with Carleman shift and almost periodic coefficients are also object of study. The main purpose of this thesis is to obtain regularity properties characterizations of those classes of operators. By regularity properties we mean those that depend on the kernel and cokernel of the operator. The main techniques used are the equivalence relations between operators and the factorization theory. An invertibility characterization for the Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators with symbols belonging to the Wiener subclass of almost periodic functions APW is obtained, assuming that a particular matrix function admits a numerical range bounded away from zero and based on the values of a certain mean motion. For Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators acting between L2-spaces and with possibly different AP symbols, criteria for the semi-Fredholm property and for one-sided and both-sided invertibility are obtained and the inverses for all possible cases are exhibited. For such results, a new type of AP factorization is introduced. Singular integral operators with Carleman shift and scalar almost periodic coefficients are also studied. Considering an auxiliar and simpler operator, and using appropriate factorizations, the dimensions of the kernels and cokernels of those operators are obtained. For Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators with (possibly different) SAP and PAP matrix symbols and acting between L2-spaces, criteria for the Fredholm property are presented as well as the sum of the Fredholm indices of the Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel and Wiener-Hopf minus Hankel operators. By studying dependencies between different matrix Fourier symbols of Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators acting between L2-spaces, results about the kernel and cokernel of those operators are derived. For Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators acting between weighted Lebesgue spaces, Lp(R;w), a study is made considering equal scalar Fourier symbols in the Wiener-Hopf and in the Hankel operators and belonging to the classes of APp;w, SAPp;w and PAPp;w. It is obtained an invertibility characterization for Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators with APp;w symbols. In the cases for which the Fourier symbols of the operators belong to SAPp;w and PAPp;w, it is obtained semi-Fredholm criteria for Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators as well as formulas for the Fredholm indices of those operators.

Full textContinuity of *-representation and Hankel operators This thesis consists of two independent parts. In the first part of this work, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a *-representation a *-semigroup abelian topological S is continuous at the identity e of S. The results are obtained by means of a theorem of integral representation with respect to a measure supported by continuous semi characters. We then give several applications of these results. The second part of this thesis deals with Hankel operators anti-meromorphic symbols on an annulus. In the first place we put in place the framework of the general theory of Hankel operators associated with a Hilbert space of holomorphic functions A^2(μ) of square integrable with respect to a measure admitting relative index times. Next, we show that the space of Laurent polynomials is dense in A ^ 2 ( μ ) it allows us to clearly define the Hankel operators and study their spectral properties. In particular, many examples, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of time, ensuring continuity compactness and Schatten classes of membership of the Hankel operators

Full textThis thesis consists of two main parts, the first part is devoted to the study of Hankel operators of antiméromorphes symbols, more precisely, we are interested in the possibility of obtaining Hankel operators bounded (resp. compact, in Schatten classes) which the symbols are not necessarily polynomials. We will give in first step, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the operator H_ {f} defined on a ring in the complex plane is bounded (resp. compact in the p-th Schatten class) and we treat examples on which we show that the Hankel operators H_ {f} and H_ {Uf} are simultaneously bounded (resp. compact, in the Schatten classes) if and only if f is a Laurent polynomial and conditions set relate to its L-degree.The second part deals with common spectral properties of operators A and B satisfying the equation A ² = ABA and B ² = BAB. We will generalize the results of Christopher Schmoeger on equality different spectra of these operators, then we will expand the field of study of these operators in the direction of the local spectral theory (SVEP, Decomposability)

Full textHanoi, like another Asian cities, have the consequences of rapid urbanization. To satisfy the growing needs of housing, employment, urban services, planning needs important financial sources, currently limited, or a change in the way of thinking and in the methods of urban design. The experiences of cities around the world show us that urban agriculture is an effective and sustainable solution for future cities. This phenomenon has given us a new way of thinking about the city that is not "non-agricultural" as the traditional definitions. The transformation of urban agriculture into “urb-agriculture” will be a new method of designing sustainable cities. This method of design must be based on human resources and knowledge of urban ecology. In Hanoi, the micro-urban-agricultural land settle spontaneously and function as self-food activities or as an economic complement for urban families. To develop sustainably agricultural areas in Hanoi City, we need to create complex and well connected systems of urban-agricultural land on several scales, highlighting the natural and human resources that are the strong points of the city. Then, in the planning of Hanoi in 2030, the vision until 2050, one of the most important issues is structure of the “ green corridor” and “green belt”, where the technological, historical, cultural and natural elements will be developed in a balanced way, towards Image of a “green city”. This is why we intend to exploit our resources and our strengths from an application of the urban agriculture design (urb-agriculture) for this green structure. Indeed, agriculture will contribute directly to the symbolic image of a “green city”. In these green cities, we will build a lasting relationship between humans and nature, an ecological, sustainable and intelligent living with environment. This method of design will become a reasonable and feasible solution for Hanoi and other Vietnamese cities

In this thesis we considered algebraic combinations of Wiener-Hopf and Hankel operators with different classes of Fourier symbols. Namely, matrix symbols from the almost periodic, semi-almost periodic, piecewise almost periodic and certain sectorial matrix functions were considered. In addition, attention was also paid to Toeplitz plus Hankel operators with piecewise almost periodic symbols and with scalar symbols having n points of standard almost periodic discontinuities. In the entire thesis a main goal is to obtain Fredholm properties description of those classes of operators. To deduce the lateral or both sided invertibility theory for Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators with AP matrix symbols was introduced the notion of an AP asymmetric factorization. In this framework were given sufficient conditions for the lateral and both sided invertibility of the Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators with matrix AP symbols. For such kind of operators were also exhibited generalized inverses for all the possible cases. For the Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators with matrix SAP and PAP symbols the Fredholm property and a formula for the sum of the Fredholm indices of these Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel and Wiener-Hopf minus Hankel operators were derived. A stronger version of these results was obtained by using the generalized right AP factorization. It was analyzed the Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators with symbols presenting some even properties, and also with Fourier symbols which contain sectorial matrices. In addition, for Wiener-Hopf-Hankel operators, it was obtained a corresponding result to the classical theorem by Douglas and Sarason known for Toeplitz operators with sectorial and unitary valued symbols. Necessary and sufficient condition for the Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators with L∞ symbols to be Fredholm (or invertible) were also derived. To obtain such a result we dealt with certain odd asymmetric factorization of the Fourier symbols. The Toeplitz plus Hankel operators generated by symbols which have n points of standard almost periodic discontinuities were also considered. Conditions were obtained under which these operators are right-invertible and with infinite kernel dimension, left-invertible and with infinite cokernel dimension or simply not normally solvable. We also focused our attention to Toeplitz plus Hankel operators with piecewise almost periodic matrix symbols. For such operators necessary and sufficient conditions were obtained to have the Fredholm property. This was done using a symbol calculus approach, certain auxiliary paired operators with semi-almost periodic symbols, and several equivalence after extension operator relations.

Abstract: The goal ofthis work is to present, to exemplify, and to improveNorwood Hanson's contributions to the methodology of scientific inquiry. Aiming to these goals, first I analyze Hanson's criticisms to the classic dichotomy between context of justification and context of discovery. Secondly, I develop his methodology of plausibility; that is, the set of 'criteria' that describe an area or scientific rationality greater than the traditional one. I support that this methodology was used by Hanson as a set of criteria for evaluating the plausibility of already advanced hypotheses (in special, working hypothesis) and not as a set of criteria or a 'machine' for discovering or generating new hypotheses. Last1y, I analyze -by means of different examples- the methodology of plausibility as it works within the continuum of scientific research, and I maintain that this methodology may constitute an instance of evaluation independent from the instance of justification

Full textThe hegemony of private motorized transport is nowadays one of the difficult problems in the field of urban transport. In the objective of urban sustainable development, sustainable transport and mobility by reducing consequences from motorized transport system (congestion, pollution, road safety, landscape degradation, the externality of non-motorized modes, social inequality, etc.) which is an essential and urgent demand in many cities in the world, including Vietnam. Hanoi is a large city in Vietnam where bikes (2 wheelers) are currently up to 80% of the daily movements of people, and public transport by bus provides only a small part of the movement of people. The people of Hanoi are living in an environment of very serious congestion and air pollution. Policies of the Vietnamese authorities to restrict private motorized modes and to encourage modal shift towards public transport and non-motorized modes (walking, cycling) have no outcome. To answer the question "why the modal shift towards the TC and non-motorized modes are not well set up" and "why the urban transport policies are stranded," as part of my thesis, I conducted surveys of household transport to the residents in Hanoi and deep interviews with experts and Vietnamese authorities hoping to have the answer in two terms: social and political. In terms of society, my investigations contribute to a better understanding of the determinants of mode choice in daily mobility of different social classes in Hanoi, to explain the reasons, barriers to a modal shift to NMT and TC for different types of travel, to know the underlying reasons of modal shift observed in some respondents. In terms of policy, I note that if the conditions of the policy are implemented or not for a modal shifts from bikes towards public transport. In the end, the objective of the thesis is also creating an analysis model of urban mobility, modal choice and modal shift, specifically for the case of Hanoi, which will form a good reference for the definition of sustainable urban transport policies

(cont.) computation required to produce the approximation is O((n2Ì)/[epsilon]) where [epsilon] is the desired â[omega] error and n is the original system order.
The problem of linear time invariant model reduction seeks to transform a given model into a model that has fidelity to the original but allows for easier completion of desired tasks such as controller design and simulation. Hankel-norm approximation consistently performs very well in terms of H[omega] error and provides lower bounds on how well any model can approximate the given model; however, it requires substantial and sometimes prohibitive computation to produce the reduced system and calculate the lower bounds. Here we present a Hankel like approximation problem that allows easier computation of lower bounds. It is shown that the lower bounds produced by the new method do a reasonable job of approximating the lower bounds produced by Hankel-norm approximation. On the negative side, It is also shown that, for the new Hankel problem, there can be no theorem analogous to the major theorem of Hankel-norm approximation that actually produces a reduced model. For nonlinear model reduction, model order does not always predict how difficult it is to perform desired tasks, so we introduce the idea of using finite state machines to approximate models. Lower state count for a finite machine indicates lower computational time to perform many tasks. First, we show, through finite state machine approximation of (1/s+1), that finite state machines are feasible as approximations. That is to say that the amount of states required to approximate a system does not blow up as desired fidelity is increased. We then show that for a given class of linear time invariant models we can set a desired â[omega] error and then find the finite state machine with the minimal number of states that achieves the desired error level. Moreover, the

Full textComposer Howard Hanson played a pivotal role in both the development and promotion of American concert music in the twentieth century. Born in Wahoo, Nebraska, to Swedish immigrants, Hanson grew up surrounded by people who followed Swedish customs (including folk song and dance), yet exhibited strong feelings of American patriotism. Hanson's earliest works, left unpublished, display the influence of Swedish folk music traditions in either direct quotation or stylistic imitation.
As the winner of the first American Prix de Rome, Hanson traveled to Italy to study at the American Academy, affording him the opportunity to travel for the first time to Sweden. While in Europe Hanson wrote some of his most important compositions, including the Scandinavian-inspired First Symphony ("Nordic") and the symphonic poem North and West. The former pulls heavily from Swedish folk music, and the latter is autobiographical, representative of the composer's identity struggles as he explored the role his heritage should play in what he increasingly realized was Americanist music.
After he assumed the directorship of the Eastman School of Music, a position he held for forty years, Hanson's music lost explicit programmatic elements inspired by Scandinavia. Hanson wrote hundreds of articles and speeches about the importance of furthering American music, became a community leader in Rochester and on a national level, and transformed Eastman into a vital center for the promotion of American composers. His affinity for Swedish music continued to be an important factor in his compositional process, as evidenced by his Third Symphony and the popular comparison of his music to that of Jan Sibelius. Despite this association Hanson is remembered as a transformative figure in American music.
