Abstract:
Hankou was once the host city of a large group of native banks or Qianzhuang in China. This case study examines the local archives to explore their urban origins, business customs and internal dynamics of Qianzhuang in Hankou from the mid-1800s. Despite all their struggles, Hankou Qianzhuang disappeared almost inconspicuously in 1952. The archival evidences from the local sources indicate that their formal dissolution had resulted more from political changes than from their inability to serve modern businesses or resistance against ruling orders. These new findings may contribute to China’s monetary history literature, particularly on the role of native-place ties and traditional features in structuring the conduct of business in China.

Using contemporary journalism and archival material, this article is concerned with the construction of the Canton–Hankow (Hankou) Railway, a strategically important route and a product of international competition and influence. It argues that the line's construction between 1898 and 1937 witnessed a transition from speculative to bilateral investment, the latter comprising Britain's share of the Boxer Indemnity fund. It details China's keenness for the fund to be directed towards completing the railway and proposes that the opportunity to reduce the overcapacity of British manufacturing industries in a depressed market through exports has parallels in contemporary China's international railway construction projects.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 1896, the Russian empire established a territorial concession in the Chinese treaty port of Hankou. Russian activity in the treaty ports has usually been subsumed into a wider ‘European’ or ‘Western’ presence, the assumption being that the Russian empire copied existing British and French concessions. This article traces the development of the idea of establishing a Russian concession from its inception to the early years of its development. The various arguments made at different stages in this process make clear that the decision was not a simple case of imitation of existing concessions, but was reached in the context of a broader shift in ideas about the proper relationship between economy, nation, and the Russian imperial state.

Reservoir regulation make conditions of sediment under the dam change greatly after impoundment of the Three Gorges Project. This paper analyzes change trend and abrupt change situation of incoming sediment and studies characteristics of new sediment of Yichang and Hankou Stations after impoundment of the Three Gorges with Mann-Kendall nonparametric rank test method. The result indicates that after operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir, annual sediment runoff changed suddenly and sediment runoff reduced sharply in Yichang and Hankou Stations; sediment entering the Yichang-Wuhan reach decreases substantially and it almost can be regarded as clean water discharge. Research shows unsaturated degree of the clear water released from reservoirs decreased after obtaining sediment along the river, so the sediment discharge would be partly recovered.

The result indicates that operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir has leveled runoff process and shortened dry season and extended median water period; After operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir, monthly river runoff of several months in both of Yichang and Hankou Stations changed abruptly. However, so far as time of abrupt change is concerned, sudden change of annual river runoff or monthly river runoff has little to do with operation of the Three Gorges Project.

Abstract:
Low flow is a seasonal phenomenon which is a critical requirement for utilization of water resources under rapidly changing environmental conditions. The operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has had a great influence on downstream low flow in the Yangtze River. In this paper, the characteristics of low flow in the main Yangtze River were analyzed during the dry season before and after the TGD operation during the period of 1956–2016. The results show that: (1) the operation of the TGD has changed the spatial and temporal distribution of streamflow in the middle and lower Yangtze River and the annual mean low flow has increased significantly since the TGD operation. (2) The operation of the TGD could advance the date of the start of dry season in the lower Yangtze River basin. The start dates of the dry season in the Yichang, Hankou and Datong stations were advanced by 14 days, 10 days and 9 days, respectively. (3) The minimum streamflow in the lower Yangtze River has increased notably since the TGD operation. The minimum streamflow was raised by 42.91%, 13.76% and 6.06% at the Yichang, Hankou and Datong stations, respectively. The increasing number of dams in the world might have the potential effects on downstream low flow. More attention should be paid to investigating the influence of dam construction on low flow in rivers all over the world.

AbstractThis article investigates a series of projects for the improvement of shipping conditions of the Upper Yangzi in 1805-'40. The enterprise was undertaken by two Hankou merchants, one of whom published his 'Brief Account of the Taming of the Rapids'. An analysis of the detailed data of this source provides insights into navigation conditions and rates of environmental change on a major river, and into a major infrastructure project undertaken as merchant philanthropy. This paper proposes a perspective on water transport in pre-industrial China against a wider temporal and cultural backdrop, with a particular reference to private philanthropy as a set item within the moral economy.

Abstract:
Abstract As the largest hydropower project in the world, the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has drawn extensive concern in terms of its impact on downstream areas. In this study, an improved time delay estimation and wavelet analysis were used to investigate the influence of the TGD on the streamflow and sediment in the middle and lower Yangtze River, using time series of the daily discharge and sediment concentration data from three hydrological stations downstream of the dam. The results indicated that all of the time series at the three stations have prominent annual cycles, but the cycle of daily mean sediment concentration was nearly nonexistent after the impoundment of the TGD. Changes in discharge and sediment between the Yichang and the Hankou stations are larger than those between the Hankou and the Datong stations, which is mainly attributed to the streamflows of tributaries and Dongting Lake and the flood diversion area of Jingjiang. The transmission time of discharge for the whole Yichang–Datong river section is approximately 6 days. In addition, the attenuation of discharge from the Yichang station to the Datong station is 20%–30%. In contrast, the transmission of suspended sediment is slower than that of discharge, which takes 7–7.5 days to move from the Yichang station to the Datong station. The attenuation of sediment is approximately 30% in the Yichang–Datong river section and shows a clear increasing trend after 2006, mainly because a large amount of sediment was trapped by the TGD, and the dynamic balance of sediment was disturbed.

Vessel behaviour analysis plays an important role in maritime situational awareness. However, available technology still provides only limited approaches to vessel behaviour analysis. In this paper, we propose a visual analytics framework to interactively explore the characteristics of vessel behaviour by means of integrating visualisation with data mining and a human-computer interaction controlling model, which combines human insight with the enormous storage and processing capacities of computers to gain insight into vessel behaviour. In addition, we provide multiple views for visually analysing vessel trajectories, densities and speeds. Case studies with 15 days' AIS data collected from the middle Hankou channel to Yangluo channel in the Yangtze River demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:
Knowledge of river engineering impacts on water discharge is significant to flow guidelines and sustainable water resource managements for balancing human consumption and the natural environment. In this study, based on the collected multi-decadal discharge data at Yichang, Hankou, and Datong stations, we determined that in October, Three Gorges Dam contributed 34.4%, 24.5%, and 18.7% to the discharge decrease in the upper, middle, and lower reach, respectively, while Gezhouba Dam contributed 14.5%, 10.7%, and 10%. Danjiangkou Reservoir caused the discharge ratio of Hanjiang to Changjiang to decline from 7.2% during 1954–1973 to 6.3% during 1973–2014. Owing to growing water withdrawal and consumption, we suggest that the distribution of water diversion and consumption should be regulated to prevent the probable occurrence of the severe issue of salt water intrusion in the Changjiang Estuary in 2028.

Abstract:
The alterations of the water level in the middle reaches of Yangtze River were investigated using the range of variability approach based on daily water level datasets extracted from 5hydrological stations. Results show that the operation of the Three Gorges Dam disturbed the hydrologic regime downstream and directly affected the water level to some extent. The rate and frequency of water level changes was most altered, while the timing of annual extreme water level was least affected. For the overall degrees of hydrologic alteration, high degrees were identified in Yichang (56%) and Jianli (47%) reaches; moderate degrees in Hankou (45%) reaches; and low degrees in Chenglingji (37%) and Luoshan (40%) reaches. Water level alterations in the middle reaches of Yangtze River were mainly caused by human activitiessuch as dam construction in the upstream and in-channel sand dredging, and also natural hydrological processes.

Abstract:
This article explores the shifting relationship between the state and the rural elites in Sichuan during the last decades of the Qing dynasty through the lens of taxation and public debt by using a creditor-debtor model as a theoretical framework. Sichuan’s unique rewarded land tax surcharge, called the “Contribution” and levied since 1864, established a relationship of symbolic and economic indebtedness of the imperial and local state to the taxpayer. Western-inspired reforms after 1898 directly attacked the symbolic and economic bonds established by the Contribution. The Railway Rent Share tax shifted the creditor-debtor relationship from the state to the public Sichuan-Hankou Railway Company by making individual taxpayers into shareholders. When Beijing eventually banned what it saw as a privatization of taxation and decided to nationalize the railway company, this ignited the Railway Protection Movement, which precipitated the 1911 Revolution in Sichuan.

Abstract:
Student performance prediction has become a hot research topic. Most of the existing prediction models are built by a machine learning method. They are interested in prediction accuracy but pay less attention to interpretability. We propose a stacking ensemble model to predict and analyze student performance in academic competition. In this model, student performance is classified into two symmetrical categorical classes. To improve accuracy, three machine learning algorithms, including support vector machine (SVM), random forest, and AdaBoost are established in the first level and then integrated by logistic regression via stacking. A feature importance analysis was applied to identify important variables. The experimental data were collected from four academic years in Hankou University. According to comparative studies on five evaluation metrics (precision, recall, F1, error, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve ( AUC ) in this analysis, the proposed model generally performs better than compared models. The important variables identified from the analysis are interpretable, they can be used as guidance to select potential students.

Abstract:
The correct urban building layout is an important influencing factor in urban ventilation, and the heat island effect has become an important factor affecting the quality of urban life. Optimization of the urban building layout can play a role in mitigating the heat island effect. The traditional ventilation corridor analysis method, based on a least-cost path analysis, can only generate a few main ventilation corridors. It is difficult to obtain global ventilation results covering the whole study area using this method of analysis. On the basis of urban morphology and a least-cost path analysis, this study proposes a “least cumulative ventilation cost” method for analyzing urban ventilation. Taking Wuhan downtown as a research area, the urban ventilation environment under different wind directions and seasons was analyzed. This method can effectively express the ventilation conditions throughout the whole study area and can simultaneously express the quality of the generated corridors effectively. The results show that Wuhan has three levels of ventilation corridor. Moreover, the ventilation conditions in Wuchang (Wuchang, Qingshan, and Hongshan) are better than those in Hankou (Qiaokou, Jianghan, and Jiang’an).

Abstract:
Accessibility is an important factor in measuring the recreational development potential of Wuhan lakeside areas where people like bike-sharing services for leisure. By using bike-sharing big data, this paper visualizes the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and depicts the free flows of OD (Original Points and Destination Points) points of the bike-sharing activities taking place within 4 km of 21 lakes in the Wuhan Third Ring Road on an important holiday. Based on these distribution laws, statistics and spatial measurement are used to measure and compare the theoretical accessibility and actual accessibility of these lakeside areas at different grid scales in order to estimate the recreational development potential and explore the causes and possible suggestions behind the recreational potential. Results show that Ziyang Lake, Shai Lake, and South Lake have great recreational potential in improving their accessibility, whereas the Hankou lake dense area has a saturated recreational development potential due to its high accessibility characteristics. The differences in the water environment, surrounding road traffic conditions, and construction situations in these lakes influence their accessibility. Some differences are also observed between the actual and theoretical accessibility of most of these lakes, and there is a long way to go for real improvement of their recreational development potential. To better exploit the recreational development potential, improving the accessibility of these lakes remains an important issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of housing prices associated with the urban infrastructure in Wuhan, China. The relationship between urban infrastructure and housing prices during rapid urbanization has drawn popular concerns. This article takes 619 residential communities during the period 2010 to 2018 in Wuhan’s main urban area as research units, and uses the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model to study the spatial-temporal differentiation in the effects of urban infrastructure on housing prices. The results show that: 1) From 2010 to 2018, housing prices in Wuhan’s main urban area were generally on the rise, but the increment speed has shown an obvious periodic characteristic, the spatial distribution of housing prices has shown an obvious core and periphery distribution and the peak value area shifted from Hankou to Wuchang. 2) The influential factors of housing prices have significant spatiotemporal non-stationarity, while the impact, direction and intensity of the influential factors varies in time and space. Spatially, the influence factors show different differentiation rules for spatial distribution, and the influencing direction and strength of the urban infrastructure on housing prices are closely related to the spatial location, distribution density and the type of urban infrastructure. Temporally, the influencing strength of various urban facilities varies. This research will benefit both urban planners for optimizing urban facilities and policy-makers for formulating more specific housing policies, which ultimately contributes to urban sustainability.

Abstract:
The downstream reach of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) along the Yangtze River (1560 km) hosts numerous mid-channel bars (MCBs). MCBs dynamics are crucial to the river’s hydrological processes and local ecological function. However, a systematic understanding of such dynamics and their linkage to TGD remains largely unknown. Using Landsat-image-extracted MCBs and several spatial-temporal analysis methods, this study presents a comprehensive understanding of MCB dynamics in terms of number, area, and shape, over downstream of TGD during the period 1985–2018. On average, a total of 140 MCBs were detected and grouped into four types representing small (<2 km2), middle (2 km2 – 7 km2), large (7 km2 – 33 km2) and extra-large size (>33 km2) MCBs, respectively. MCBs number decreased after TGD closure but most of these happened in the lower reach. The area of total MCBs experienced an increasing trend (2.77 km2/yr, p-value < 0.01) over the last three decades. The extra-large MCBs gained the largest area increasing rate than the other sizes of MCBs. Small MCBs tended to become relatively round, whereas the others became elongate in shape after TGD operation. Impacts of TGD operation generally diminished in the longitudinal direction from TGD to Hankou and from TGD to Jiujiang for shape and area dynamics, respectively. The quantified longitudinal and temporal dynamics of MCBs across the entire Yangtze River downstream of TGD provides a crucial monitoring basis for continuous investigation of the changing mechanisms affecting the morphology of the Yangtze River system.

Abstract:
Wuhan encountered a serious attack in the first round of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has resulted in a public health social impact, including public mental health. Based on the Weibo help data, we inferred the spatial distribution pattern of the epidemic situation and its impacts. Seven urban factors, i.e., urban growth, general hospital, commercial facilities, subway station, land-use mixture, aging ratio, and road density, were selected for validation with the ordinary linear model, in which the former six factors presented a globally significant association with epidemic severity. Then, the geographically weighted regression model (GWR) was adopted to identify their unevenly distributed effects in the urban space. Among the six factors, the distribution and density of major hospitals exerted significant effects on epidemic situation. Commercial facilities appear to be the most prevalently distributed significant factor on epidemic situation over the city. Urban growth, in particular the newly developed residential quarters with high-rise buildings around the waterfront area of Hanyang and Wuchang, face greater risk of the distribution. The influence of subway stations concentrates at the adjacency place where the three towns meet and some near-terminal locations. The aging ratio of the community dominantly affects the hinterland of Hankou to a broader extent than other areas in the city. Upon discovering the result, a series of managerial implications that coordinate various urban factors were proposed. This research may contribute toward developing specific planning and design responses for different areas in the city based on a better understanding of the occurrence, transmission, and diffusion of the COVID-19 epidemic in the metropolitan area.

Abstract:
Objective. To observe the clinical efficacy of periocular injection of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and subpalpebral injection of botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) for the treatment of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) with mild unilateral upper eyelid retraction. Method. This was a prospective randomized controlled study. A total of 68 cases of stable thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy with mild upper eyelid retraction were collected at Hankou Aier Eye Hospital from Jan. 2015 to Dec. 2018 and randomly divided into two groups. Group A contained 33 patients who were administered TA by periocular injection once every 3 weeks for a total of 3 times. Group B contained 35 patients who were given a single subpalpebral administration of BTXA. The efficacy in the two groups was observed. Results. Compared with the two groups, the effective rate in both groups was 100% at 1 week and 1 month after treatment. The effective rate of Group A remained 100% at 3 months after treatment, and that of Group B decreased to 88.6%. At 1 week after treatment, the degree of correction in Group B was greater than that in Group A ( p < 0.001 ). At 1 month after treatment, it was not significantly different between the two groups ( p > > > 0.05 ). At 3 months after treatment, it was less in Group B than in Group A ( p < 0.001 ). In Group A, there was one case of transient amaurosis, two cases of periorbital hemorrhage and swelling, and one mild case of sunken eyes. In Group B, four cases experienced recurrence after 3 months. Conclusion. Periocular injection of TA and subpalpebral injection of BTXA offer definite therapeutic efficacy for mild upper eyelid retraction associated with thyroid disease. The former has a long treatment period, large procedural risks, and stable efficacy. The latter is a simple procedure with a short treatment period but can easily recur.

Abstract:
At the beginning of 2020, a suddenly appearing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) rapidly spread around the world. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in China occurred during the Spring Festival when a large number of migrants traveled between cities, which greatly increased the infection risk of COVID-19 across the country. Financially supported by the Wuhan government, and based on cellphone signaling data from Unicom (a mobile phone carrier) and Baidu location-based data, this paper analyzed the effects that city dwellers, non-commuters, commuters, and people seeking medical services had on the transmission risk of COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic in Wuhan. The paper also evaluated the effects of the city lockdown policy on the spread of the pandemic outside and inside Wuhan. The results show that although the daily business activities in the South China Seafood Wholesale Market and nearby commuters’ travel behaviors concentrated in the Hankou area, a certain proportion of these people were distributed in the Wuchang and Hanyang areas. The areas with relatively high infection risks of COVID-19 were scattered across Wuhan during the early outbreak of the pandemic. The lockdown in Wuhan closed the passageways of external transport at the very beginning, largely decreasing migrant population and effectively preventing the spread of the pandemic to the outside. However, the Wuhan lockdown had little effect on preventing the spread of the pandemic within Wuhan at that time. During this period, a large amount of patients who went to hospitals for medical services were exposed to a high risk of cross-infection without precaution awareness. The pandemic kept dispersing in three towns until the improvement of the capacity of medical treatment, the management of closed communities, the national support to Wuhan, and the implementation of a series of emergency responses at the same time. The findings in this paper reveal the spatiotemporal features of the dispersal of infection risk of COVID-19 and the effects of the prevention and control measures during the early days of the pandemic. The findings were adopted by the Wuhan government to make corresponding policies and could also provide supports to the control of the pandemic in the other regions and countries.

Abstract:
Background Older adults have been reported to be a population with high-risk of death in the COVID-19 outbreak. Rapid detection of high-risk patients is crucial to reduce mortality in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognositc accuracy of the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) for in-hospital mortality in older adults with COVID-19. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Wuhan Hankou Hospital in China from 1 January 2020 to 29 February 2020. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the predictive value of MEWS, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), Sequential Organ Function Assessment (SOFA), quick Sequential Organ Function Assessment (qSOFA), Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI), Combination of Confusion, Urea, Respiratory Rate, Blood Pressure, and Age ≥65 (CURB-65), and the Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome Criteria (SIRS) for in-hospital mortality. Logistic regression models were performed to detect the high-risk older adults with COVID-19. Results Among the 235 patients included in this study, 37 (15.74%) died and 131 (55.74%) were male, with an average age of 70.61 years (SD 8.02). ROC analysis suggested that the capacity of MEWS in predicting in-hospital mortality was as good as the APACHE II, SOFA, PSI and qSOFA (Difference in AUROC: MEWS vs. APACHE II, −0.025 (95% CI [−0.075 to 0.026]); MEWS vs. SOFA, −0.013 (95% CI [−0.049 to 0.024]); MEWS vs. PSI, −0.015 (95% CI [−0.065 to 0.035]); MEWS vs. qSOFA, 0.024 (95% CI [−0.029 to 0.076]), all P > 0.05), but was significantly higher than SIRS and CURB-65 (Difference in AUROC: MEWS vs. SIRS, 0.218 (95% CI [0.156–0.279]); MEWS vs. CURB-65, 0.064 (95% CI [0.002–0.125]), all P < 0.05). Logistic regression models implied that the male patients (≥75 years) had higher risk of death than the other older adults (estimated coefficients: 1.16, P = 0.044). Our analysis further suggests that the cut-off points of the MEWS score for the male patients (≥75 years) subpopulation and the other elderly patients should be 2.5 and 3.5, respectively. Conclusions MEWS is an efficient tool for rapid assessment of elderly COVID-19 patients. MEWS has promising performance in predicting in-hospital mortality and identifying the high-risk group in elderly patients with COVID-19.

Abstract:
Using the theory of Hankel-type convolution, continuous generalized Hankel-type wavelet integral transformation is defined. The generalized Hankel-type integral wavelet transformation is developed. Using the developed theory of generalized Hankel-type convolution, the generalized Hankel-type translation is introduced. Properties of the kernel are developed in the study. Using the properties of kernel,D μ,α, β ,v (x,y,z)the generalized Hankel-type wavelet transformation is defined. The existence of the generalized Hankel-type integral wavelet transformation is given by a theorem. The boundedness and inversion formula for the generalized Hankel-type integral wavelet transformation is obtained. A basic wavelet which defines continuous generalized Hankel-type integral wavelet transformation, its admissibility conditions and the wavelet to the function is proved. Examples have been shown to explain the studied continuous generalized Hankel-type integral wavelet transformation.
