Abstract:
Organoids are developed from stem cells and serve as three-dimensional model systems for different organs. They have great potential for research and medicine, but also raise philosophical, ethical and legal questions which have rarely been discussed in Germany so far. This thematic study by the interdisciplinary research group (IAG) Gene Technology Report at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities offers an overview of current scientific developments, their present and potential application, as well as epistemological, ethical and legal reflections. Hereby, the IAG wants to provide impetus for an interdisciplinary and society-wide debate on this general subject. With contributions by Cantas Alev, Aileen-Diane Bamford, Sina Bartfeld, Andreia S. Johnson, David. Dreaming of Freedom in South Africa. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474430210.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Dreaming of Freedom in South Africa examines for the first time the many different texts imagining the future after the end of apartheid. Focused on well-known and obscure literary texts from the 1880s to the 1970s, as well as the many manifestos and programmes setting out visions of the future, this book charts the dreams of freedom of five major traditions of anti-colonial and anti-apartheid resistance: the African National Congress (ANC), the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA), the Non-European Unity Movement (NEUM) and the Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC). The works of a number of South African literary figures are discussed, including Olive Schreiner, S. E. K. Mqhayi, Alan Paton, Karel Schoeman, Jordan Ngubane, Winnifred Holtby, Ethelreda Lewis, Dora Taylor, Livingstone Mqotsi, Peter Abrahams, Richard Rive, Lauretta Ngcobo and Bessie Head. Political thinkers analysed include Nelson Mandela, R. F. A. Hoernlé, Albert Luthuli, Clements Kadalie, A. W. G. Champion, Edward Roux, James La Guma, Alfred Nzula, I. B. Tabata, Ben Kies, Anton Lembede, A. P. Mda and Robert Sobukwe. The theoretical dimensions of the study are orientated in relation to major Marxist critics of utopianism like Marx, Friedrich Engels, Leon Trotsky and Ernst Bloch, as well as to thinkers like Hannah Arendt, Immanuel Wallerstein, James C. Scott and Jay Winter. More than an exercise in historical excavation, Dreaming of Freedom in South Africa raises challenging questions for the post-apartheid present.

Abstract:
The intensively discussed term transformation refers to the comprehensive restructuring of processes and behaviour in order to address societal challenges posed by far-reaching changes in energy, transport, production and agricultural systems. Since such complex transformations are always accompanied by uncertainties about their effects and consequences, the contributions in this volume critically examine the opportunities and risks involved in these processes and discuss the possibilities and limits of technology assessment in the context of societal transformations. The volume brings together the academic contributions to the 8th international conference of the Technology Assessment Network, which took place in Karlsruhe from 7th to 8th November 2018. Abstract:
Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr.) Hj. Harussani bin Hj. Zakaria adalah anak bongsu kepada pasangan Hj. Zakaria b. Hj. Osman dan Hjh. Zainab bt.

Abstract:
King, Sallie B. The Ethics of Engaged Buddhism in Asia. Edited by Daniel Cozort and James Mark Shields. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198746140.013.20.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the ethics of contemporary Engaged Buddhism, also known as Socially Engaged Buddhism. The introductory section defines Engaged Buddhism and gives an overview of its history, the various forms of social engagement undertaken by Engaged Buddhists in different Asian countries, and its most important leaders. The chapter then analyses the ethical principles of Engaged Buddhism—first, those found throughout the Engaged Buddhist movement as a whole, then those that characterize what may heuristically be seen as three major kinds of Engaged Buddhism: nondualistic (exemplified by Thich Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama), prophetic (exemplified by B. R. Ambedkar), and humanistic (exemplified by Venerable Cheng Yen and Tzu Chi).

Abstract:
Modern diplomacy is extending its activities into many spheres and is itself being exposed to unprecedented influences: the factors that are shaking up our societies are having an impact on governance as well, be it digitisation, the emotionalised sensitivities of the public or non-diplomatic international actors. Such developments need to be absorbed by diplomacy in order for it to continue to function as part of modern governance and for it to inform both governments and the societies they represent. Governments would do well to develop forms of mediation and ways of reconciling interests. The objective must be to allow states to continue to work effectively as sovereign and legitimate actors and, at the same time, to make use of the potential inherent in the changes our countries are experiencing. King, Sallie B. The Problems and Promise of Karma from an Engaged Buddhist Perspective. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190499778.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay examines the role of karma in Engaged Buddhist thought and action. It discusses (1) ways in which Engaged Buddhists make use of karma; (2) ways in which karma is a problem for Engaged Buddhism; and (3) ways in which Engaged Buddhists have attempted to overcome the difficulties associated with traditional ideas about karma. Issues surrounding karma addressed by Engaged Buddhists include the stigmatization of dalits, women, and the disabled; the promotion of fatalism and passivity; individual and social responsibility; karma and justice; karma and social change; karma and compassion. Engaged Buddhist leaders discussed include B. R. Ambedkar, Aung San Suu Kyi, Sulak Sivaraksa, and Thich Nhat Hanh. The paper concludes that there are many successful ways that Engaged Buddhists have addressed difficulties associated with karma and specifies other ways that could be considered in addition.
