We consider a simple extension of the familiar Tower of Hanoi puzzle. There are three vertical pegs lined up in a row and n discs. The discs have holes in their centres so that they can be threaded on to the pegs. Initially, all n discs are placed on the left-hand peg in non-increasing order of radius to form a tower, as in Figure 1. The object of the game is to transfer the entire tower to the right-hand peg by moving discs from peg to peg, one at a time according to the rules:(1) only a disc at the top of a tower may be moved;(2) a disc must never be placed on top of a smaller disc.

We introduce the k-peg Hanoi automorphisms and Hanoi self-similar groups, a generalization of the Hanoi Towers groups, and give conditions for them to be contracting. We analyze the limit spaces of a particular family of contracting Hanoi groups, [Formula: see text], and show that these are the unique maximal contracting Hanoi groups under a suitable symmetry condition. Finally, we provide partial results on the contraction of Hanoi groups with weaker symmetry.

Abstract:
Vietnamese, the official language of Vietnam, is spoken natively by over seventy-five million people in Vietnam and greater Southeast Asia as well as by some two million overseas, predominantly in France, Australia, and the United States. The genetic affiliation of Vietnamese has been at times the subject of considerable debate (Diffloth 1992). Scholars such as Tabard (1838) maintained a relation to Chinese, while Maspero (1912), despite noting similarities to Mon-Khmer, argued for an affiliation with Tai. However, at least since the work of Haudricourt (1953), most scholars now agree that Vietnamese and related Vietic languages belong to the Mon-Khmer branch of the Austroasiatic family.

This manuscript describes three activities connecting the Tower of Hanoi puzzle to three familiar fractal forms. The first connects coin flipping, paper folding, and the Tower of Hanoi to the Dragon Curve. The second illustrates mathematician Ian Stewart's method for showing how the relationships between possible states of the Tower of Hanoi are related to stages in Sierpinski's Gasket. The final activity compares right-left moves of Tower of Hanoi disks to iterations of the Von Koch Curve.

Abstract:
The 30–31 October 2008 Hanoi, Vietnam, heavy rainfall–flood (HRF) event occurred unusually farther north than other Vietnam events. The cause of this event is explored with multiple-scale processes in the context of the midlatitude–tropical interaction. In the midlatitudes, the cold surge linked to the Hanoi event can be traced westward to the leeside cyclogenesis between the Altai Mountains and Tianshan. This cyclone developed into a Bering Sea explosive cyclone later, simultaneously with the occurrence of the Hanoi HRF event. In the tropics, a cold surge vortex formed on 26 October, south of the Philippines, through the interaction of an easterly disturbance, an already existing small surface vortex in the Celebes Sea, and the eastern Asian cold surge flow. This cold surge vortex developed into a cyclone, juxtaposed with the surface high of the cold surge flow, and established a strong moist southeasterly flow from the South China Sea to Hanoi, which helped maintain the HRF event. Spectral analysis of the zonal winds north and south of the Hanoi HRF cyclone and rainfall at Hanoi reveal the existence of three monsoon modes: 30–60, 12–24, and 5 days. The cold surge vortex developed into an HRF cyclone in conjunction with the in-phase constructive interference of the three monsoon modes, while the Hanoi HRF event was hydrologically maintained by the northwestward flux of water vapor into Hanoi by these monsoon modes.

Due to the policy of the Doi moi in Vietnam started in 1986, Hanoi has undergone many important changes. Currently, Hanoi's traffic is characterized by seemingly continuous motorcycle flows - a representative of high personal mobility in the context of rising incomes. Congestion, dust, pollution, insecurity, overload, etc., they are important keywords to describe Hanoi's urban traffic. Hanoi has put in place a number of policies to improve the transportation system. In 2017, in Hanoi's new mobility improvement project, there is a regulation on motorcycles: “The municipality will zone by limiting the activities of motorcycles according to the infrastructure and the service capacity of the public transportation system to stop motorcycle activities in the central districts in 2030” that becomes controversial. This article, based on the results of surveys assessing the level of satisfaction and desires of people about traffic at the KDTMs of Hanoi, analyzes the differences between the wishes of the municipality and the practices of Hanoi, through habits, modes of mobility of KDTM residents - the new residential areas of Hanoi that bring a different atmosphere of habitat compared to existing neighborhoods, by changing the mode of (re)making of the city. How will the traffic of KDTM residents be affected by this decision as well as how KDTMs will participate in the sustainable transportation of Hanoi?. It is the KDTMs with their “novelties” that will have to become pioneers creating opportunities of the changing of Hanoi traffic.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has re-emerged in recent years. In 2017, the largest recorded outbreak of dengue appeared in Hanoi, Vietnam, with over 37,000 cases and seven deaths. This study aimed to describe the temporal and spatial characteristics of the dengue hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Hanoi in 2017. We used heat maps, hotspot and cold spot, and cluster analysis to describe and analyze the development of the outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever in all 30 districts of the city of Hanoi. The results show that in 2017, Hanoi experienced the most serious dengue outbreak since 1992 with 37,665 cases recorded including seven deaths (CFR: 0.02%), or 492 cases per 100,000 persons, which makes dengue a serious public health threat in Hanoi. The outbreak not only produced a very large number of cases, but also expanded by space, with 25 districts having an incidence greater than 100 cases per 100,000 persons. The highest incidences were still concentrated in the urban and suburban areas. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is currently a serious public health issue in Hanoi, which needs attention especially for prevention.

Hanoi network (HN) has a one-dimensional periodic lattice as its main structure with additional long-range edges, which allow having efficient quantum walk algorithm that can find a target state on the network faster than the exhaustive classical search. In this paper, we use regular quantum walks and lackadaisical quantum walks, respectively, to search for a target state. From the curve fitting of the numerical results for HN of degrees three and four, we find that their running time for the regular quantum walks are followed by amplitude amplification scales as [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. The article is devoted to the consideration of COVID-19 that is a dangerous pandemic in the world, broke out in late December 2019 in Wuhan, China. It is outlined that the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 greatly depends on the consciousness of population, including students studying in Universities in Hanoi. The aim of the study is to find out the characteristics of students’ reaction in Hanoi to the COVID-19 pandemic in three aspects: awareness, emotions and action. Methods. During the study the following methods were used: a survey method to determine the characteristics of students' copping with COVID-19. 395 University students were interviewed. Among them students studying at the National Academy for Educational Management; University of Social Sciences and Humanities; Hanoi Polytechnic University; Hanoi State Pedagogical University. The survey results are listed using the SPSS statistical program. The research results show that the students of universities in Hanoi have a proper awareness, appropriate response in disease conditions, expressed in cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects. Besides, some students still have subjective expressions, excessive anxiety and negative response behaviors. The results of study show important psychological bases, establish meaningful experiences to develop effective prevention and control copping strategies for COVID-19 and the pandemics like COVID-19 in future.

Abstract:
A study of land subsidence due to groundwater pumping in the city of Hanoi, Vietnam, was conducted by collecting and analyzing data on the geology, hydrology, soil properties, and observed settlements. The city of Hanoi is underlain by sediments consisting of organic and inorganic clays, silt, peat, sand, and gravel. The pumping of groundwater causes consolidation of compressible aquitard layers. The water demand for the city of Hanoi is increasing with time. The present total rate of water pumping is 450 000 m3/day, and there is a proposal to increase the rate to 751 000 m3/day by the year 2010. This research program involved the modelling of seepage related to pumping along with a stress-deformation analysis. The effect of surface infiltration was also modelled. The settlements computed for parts of the city of Hanoi were compared with measurements of settlement in the city area. The simulation results appear to be in fairly good agreement with the measurement results. The study showed that subsidence due to groundwater pumping is a serious problem in the city of Hanoi. It is important to continue to measure settlements and compute possible deformations associated with actual rates of pumping.Key words: subsidence, settlement, groundwater pumping, stress-deformation modelling, seepage modelling.

ABSTRACT Helicobacter pylori-associated diseases, such as peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, are common in Vietnam, but the prevalence of the infection is largely unknown. A validated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used for seroepidemiology with 971 samples from the general population, ages 0 to 88 years, with 546 samples from an urban population (Hanoi), and with 425 samples from a poor, rural province (Hatay). The overall seroprevalence of the infection was 746 per 1,000, with a prevalence of 788 per 1,000 in Hanoi and 692 per 1,000 in Hatay (P = 0.0007). The risk for infection in the rural area of Hatay was 40% lower than in the urban population of Hanoi, with the odds ratio being 0.59 (95% confidence interval, 0.43 to 0.81). The study shows that the prevalence of H. pylori infection is high in Vietnam and especially high in a large urban area, such as the city of Hanoi.
