Abstract:
This chapter examines the transformations in the status and character of Scottish Episcopalianism from 1662 to 1829. Despite being re-established in the Church of Scotland in 1661–2, episcopacy was abolished in 1689. Thereafter Episcopalians were a Nonconformist group, and only the minority of congregations whose clergy were loyal to Queen Anne and her Hanoverian successors enjoyed legal protection. But while the intermittent prosecution of the Jacobite clergy contributed to a steep decline in the number of Scottish Episcopalians, disestablishment allowed the clergy to reassess episcopal authority, and to experiment with liturgical reforms. After transferring their allegiance to the Hanoverians in 1788, the Episcopalians drew closer to the Church of England, formally adopting the Thirty-Nine Articles in 1804. By the end of the period, the Episcopalians saw themselves as an independent, non-established Church, one of the branches of international Anglicanism.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the book The University of Oxford. A History (2016), by Laurence W. B. Brockliss. The book is divided into four parts: the ‘Catholic University’ (c.1100–1534), the ‘Anglican University’ (1534–1845), the ‘Imperial University’ (1845–1945), and the ‘World University’ (1945–2015). Brockliss’s account broadly endorses the idea that the 400 years or so between the high middle ages and the Victorian era of reform were a time of decline for Oxford, reaching the lowest point under the Hanoverians. Yet this interpretation has been seriously questioned by others, including Lucy Sutherland and Leslie Mitchell. The book tackles a range of topics related to Oxford, including its undergraduate curriculum, student population, research, funding, and institutional obstacles to reform.

Abstract:
This book explores the complex and contested relationships that existed between class, patronage, and poetry in Hanoverian England by examining the life and work of Stephen Duck, the ‘famous Threshing Poet’. In 1730, Duck became the most famous agricultural labourer in the nation when his writing won him the patronage of Queen Caroline. The man, and the writing he produced, intrigued contemporaries. How was it possible, they asked, for an agricultural labourer to become a poet? What would a thresher write? Did he really deserve royal patronage, and what would he do with such an honour? How should he be supported? And was he an isolated prodigy, or were there others like him, equally deserving of support? Duck’s remarkable story reveals the tolerances, and intolerances, of the Hanoverian social order. This book sheds new light on the poet’s early life, revealing how the farm labourer developed an interest in poetry; how he wrote his most famous poem, ‘The Thresher’s Labour’; how his public identity as the ‘famous Threshing Poet’ took shape; and how he came to be positioned as a figurehead of labouring-class writing. It explores how the patronage Duck received shaped his writing; how he came to reconceive his relationship with land, labour, and leisure; and how he made use of his newly acquired classical learning to develop new friendships and career opportunities. And it reveals how, after Duck’s death, rumours about his suicide came to overshadow the achievements of his life. Both in life, and in death, this book argues, Duck provided both opportunity and provocation for thinking through the complex interplay of class, patronage, and poetry in Hanoverian England.

Abstract:
The year 1714 was a revolutionary one for Dissenters across the British Empire. The Hanoverian Succession upended a political and religious order antagonistic to Protestant non-conformity and replaced it with a regime that was, ostensibly, sympathetic to the Whig interest. The death of Queen Anne and the dawn of Hanoverian Rule presented Dissenters with fresh opportunities and new challenges as they worked to negotiate and legitimize afresh their place in the polity. The essays in this collection examine how Dissenters and their allies in a range of geographic contexts confronted and adapted to the Hanoverian order. Collectively, they argue that though generally overlooked compared to the Glorious Revolution of 1688–9 or the 1707 Act of Union, 1714 was a pivotal moment with far reaching consequences for Dissenters at home and abroad. By decentralizing the narrative beyond England and exploring dissenting reactions in Scotland, Ireland and North America, the authors in this volume demonstrate the extent to which the Succession influenced the politics and touched the lives of ordinary people across the British Atlantic world. As well as offering a thorough breakdown of confessional tensions within Britain during the short and medium terms, this volume also marks the first attempt to look at the complex interaction between religious communities in consequence of the Hanoverian Succession.
