Abstract:

An examination of the ontological position on which Hans-Georg Gadamer’s views rely, and of its relationship to the views of Heidegger, Plato and Hegel. I argue that Gadamer’s notion of being appeals to a structure he uses repeatedly in other areas of his philosophy in which the communal participation of many finite individuals creates an essential entity that surpasses the sum of their input and is then regulative of their participation in it. I demonstrate first that he advocates something more than an empiricism based on our finite faculties, then that his account of textuality involves an appeal to an ideal ‘text itself’ that is beyond our reach, and finally that this structure is extended to language and this this extension is seen as the basis of all being. His idea of a reality that can guide our conversations towards truth is embodied in what he calls the ‘one word’ or ‘logos’: I argue that this takes the place of Hegel’s ‘Absolute Spirit’, but is mixed with the later Heidegger’s ideas about a clearing in being in such a way that it no longer completely transcends intersubjective dialogue. Gadamer preserves the metaphysical edifices that Plato and Hegel associated with ‘dialectic’, but denies that they require an ontological commitment to anything beyond Heidegger’s being-in-the-world. Thus being in the world itself must ultimately depend on our participating in dialogue and in society, and will alter as different numbers of people develop cultivated practical rationality. I argue that this resting of ontology on an ethical requirement demonstrates that the original extension of the structure Gadamer detects in language and textuality to being itself is highly implausible, and that this casts many doubts on his use of the same structure in other areas. I conclude by looking at the way in which this same structure he detects in language allows him conveniently to side-step criticism, but maintain that it nonetheless contains valuable insights into the workings of language that are missing from other accounts.

Une des tache essentielles de la theologie chretienne consiste a conjuguer une experience naturelle ou rationnelle du monde, de l'homme et de dieu avec la reception du scandale de la croix. De cette ligne interrompue, elle s'efforce sans cesse de conjoindre les bords, tout en marquant l'impossibilite de la continuite. Analogie de l'etre contre analogie de la foi. Dans une longue chaine qui va des ecrits neotestamentaires jusqu'a nous, hegel a tente a son tour de relever ce defi, en reprenant les acquis de ses devanciers, paul et luther en particulier. J. Moltmann,d. Bonhoeffer, e. Jungel, h. U. Von balthasar et s. Breton, ainsi que bien d'autres, prolongent la reflexion a l'epoque contemporaine. La performance hegelienne influe en effet massivement sur la theologie contemporaine. Ceux qui, de pres ou de loin, se reclament du philosophe allemand, ceux qui le refutent, s'en distancient ou s'en servent pour le depasser, ont tous, a des titres divers, integre son heritage. Nous analysons d'abord le concept de mort de dieu chez hegel (1ere partie) pour ensuite prendre la mesure du defi hegelien dans la theologie contemporaine (2e partie)
One of the main endeavours of christian theology is to ally the natural or rational experience bearing on world, on man and on god with the reception of the scandal of the cross. Endless theologians try to join together the two edges of this broken line : analogy of being versus analogy of faith, while they show its impossible continuity. In a long series going from the period of the new testament to ours, hegel, at his turn, has tried to taken up the challenge, by taking again the acquisitions of his predecessors, specially paul and luther. Nowadays, j. Moltmann, d. Bonhoeffer, e. Jungel, h. U. Von balthasar and s. Breton, as well as many others carry on the reflection on the topic. Hegel's performance exerts a massive influence on contemporary theology. Theologians who more or less follow the german philosopher, as well as those who oppose to him, or keep themselves distant from him, or rely on him to go beyond him, all of them have, at various stages, embodied his inheritance. At first, we analyse the concept of the death of god according to hegel (first part), in order, then, to appreciate the hegelian challenge in contemporary theology (second part)

Abstract:

Hayek's interpretation of Smith's invisible hand as a metaphor for the theory of spontaneous order still holds as the only authentic interpretation of that famous phrase, despite all criticism. Although not many authors noticed it, Hegel was a theorist of spontaneous order, namely also a theorist of the spontaneous order of market economy. There is evidence that Hegel followed here Adam Smith's teachings about the invisible hand. The invisible hand is present in Hegel's writings as an element, from what sprang his theory of spirit. That means that his theory of spirit is a general theory of spontaneous order, although written in metaphysical manner. However, being a theorist of spontaneous order didn't prevent him from being an interventionist. He was led to interventionism by his synoptic fallacy of mind. He never tried to apply this fallacy on the studies of the market economy. Marxists did that. Some of recent scholars (Sciabarra, Johnson, and Cristi) identified Hegel's theory of spontaneous order, but their interpretation wasn't perfectly in accordance with Hegel's texts. How these authors denied Popper's and Hayek's incorrect opinion that Hegel was a totalitarian, thus it is needed to enrich studies of mentioned current scholars. Here it is taken into account only what Hegel wrote, not later authors about him. This thesis is also an attempt to evaluate the history of economic thought from the standpoint of Smith's and Hegel's methodology.

La justice cosmopolite présuppose la justice dans l’ordre interne d’un État ainsi que la justice internationale, en se différenciant aussi bien de l’une que de l’autre pour s’interroger sur le juste et l’injuste qui porte sur l’être humain en tant que tel et en tant qu’individu singulier, au-delà de son statut en tant que habitant, ressortissant ou citoyen d’un État, prenant ainsi aussi en compte les générations futures et l’environnement. Être cosmopolite est une condition à dimension individuelle et collective, liée à la construction de soi (un soi cosmopolite), à la manière de penser et de vivre dans sa dimension quotidienne (l’action sous un angle cosmopolite), ainsi qu’à une réflexion sur ce qu’est le juste et l’injuste cosmopolite, sur l’émergence des groupes sociaux qui exigent le cosmopolitisme et sur la normativité des institutions nationales, internationales et supranationales qui veulent le réaliser. Ainsi, la notion de justice cosmopolite se révèle être un objet commun au champ de la philosophie, des sciences politiques, de la sociologie, des sciences de la culture, de la psychologie sociale ainsi que du droit. Nous analysons d’abord les enjeux de la justice cosmopolite tels qu’ils ont été formulés aux XVIII et XIX siècles chez Hobbes, Kant, Hegel et Alexander von Humboldt, en confrontant ses idées avec les débats contemporains; ensuite, les nouveaux problématiques de la justice cosmopolite qui se dessinent au XX siècle avec Freud, Kelsen, la Théorie Critique et Bourdieu; et enfin, quelques enjeux fondamentaux contemporains de la justice cosmopolite : les droits humains, le droit humanitaire, le droit des minorités et l’espace public mondial
Cosmopolitan justice presupposes justice in the order of a State as well as international justice, but differs from these two forms in that it questions the just and unjust concerning human beings as such and as a unique individual, beyond one’s status as a resident, national or citizen of a State, and also takes into account future generations and the environment. Being cosmopolitan has an individual and collective dimension related to the construction of the self (a cosmopolitan self), to one’s way of thinking and living in its everyday dimension (action from a cosmopolitan standpoint) and a reflection on what is just and unjust cosmopolitanism, the emergence of social groups that require cosmopolitanism and the normativity of national, international and supranational institutions that want to achieve it. Thus, the notion of cosmopolitan justice proves to be a common object in the field of philosophy, political science, sociology, cultural studies, social psychology and law. This thesis first analyzes the challenges of cosmopolitan justice as they were formulated in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by Hobbes, Kant, Hegel and Alexander von Humboldt, comparing their ideas with contemporary debates (Part I). It then analyzes new issues regarding cosmopolitan justice that emerged in the twentieth century with Freud, Kelsen, Critical Theory and Bourdieu (Part II). Finally, an analysis is offered on fundamental contemporary issues of cosmopolitan justice, such as human rights, humanitarian law, the rights of minorities and global public space (Part III)

Abstract:

Cette thèse présente une étude théorique et épistémologique du concept de jeu -étude qui, tout en prenant ancrage dans la tradition sociologique, se fonde sur l'herméneutique de H.G. Gadamer ainsi que sur la dialectique hégélienne. Divisée en deux parties -respectivement intitulées Sociologie(s) du jeu et Herméneutique et dialectique du jeu -la thèse examine, dans un premier temps, les principaux textes fondateurs de la pensée sociologique sur le jeu, en suivant l'exigence formulée par l'herméneutique de Gadamer d'un dialogue avec autrui et d'une appropriation et d'une reconnaissance de la légitimité de son propos. Au travers de ce dialogue; les concepts et les représentations qui ont tissé la pensée sociologique du jeu sont identifiés et ressaisis. La première partie de la thèse compte trois chapitres correspondant chacun aux trois principales bases épistémologiques de la sociologie -le situationnisme ou interactionnisme, le monisme ou holisme et l'individualisme méthodologique -qui, elles-mêmes, renvoient à trois manières différentes de concevoir le jeu, c'est-à-dire, respectivement: le jeu comme métaphore de la socialité (Ch. 1), le jeu comme prisme de la civilisation (Ch. 2) et enfin, le jeu comme instrument d'analyse de l'action rationnelle (Ch. 3). Dans un deuxième temps, la thèse relit et relie les différentes études sociologiques sur le jeu en retournant au phénomène du jeu principalement le théâtre, mais aussi les échecs et le hockey -en compagnie de la dialectique hégélienne et du processus de suppression-conservation qui la structure. Se divisant également en trois chapitres, la deuxième partie de la thèse se présente comme un exposé des différentes médiations au travers desquelles le jeu se réalise progressivement. Dans son moment subjectif (Ch. 4), le jeu est travaillé par la médiation des émotions, de l'imagination et du style. L'intermédiation de la liberté, de la règle et de la mesure constitue, par ailleurs, le jeu dans son moment objectif (Ch. 5). Et enfin, dans son moment esthétique (Ch. 6), le jeu accède à la qualité de représentation, voire d'une belle représentation, et il se configure et se montre au travers de l'articulation dialectique de ses qualités musicales, plastiques et dramatiques.
