Abstract:
Art History<br>M.A.<br>This project explores the work of Hans Holbein the Younger, sixteenth-century printmaker and portraitist, through the lens of early modern physiognomic thought. This period's renewed interest in the discipline of physiognomy, the art and science of "reading" human features, reflects a desire to understand the relationship between outer appearances and inner substances of things. Physiognomic theory has a host of applications and meanings for the visual artist, who produces a surface representation or likeness, yet scholarship on this subject has been limited. Examining H

Abstract:
This thesis examines the materials and techniques of sixteenth century artist Hans Holbein the Younger, with particular reference to his portrait drawings. The research reinstates the drawings as the primary source-material for investigation, thereby demonstrating the link between the materials and techniques chosen by Holbein, and the function or end-use of the drawings. Although around one hundred Holbein portrait drawings survive, the focus of this research is the eighteen that relate to currently attributed oil and miniature paintings. By focusing the research in this manner, it is possibl

<p> This thesis examines how Hans Holbein the Younger negotiated the genre of donor family portraiture in the <i>Darmstadt Madonna</i> (1526/1528) by creating a contemporary representation of the patron Jakob Meyer&rsquo;s family. In early sixteenth-century Basel, reforms within the Catholic Church and the advent of Protestantism contested late medieval concepts of gender, kinship, and piety. I argue that the <i>Darmstadt Madonna </i> addressed this tumultuous context by partially reorienting the focus of traditional devotionally-themed paintings from the holy figures to the donor family. Abstract:
When Martin Luther supposedly nailed his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517 to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, the small town had only a single printing press. By the end of the century, Wittenberg had published more books than any other city in the Holy Roman Empire. Of the leading print centres in early modern Europe, Wittenberg was the only one that was not a major centre of trade, politics, or culture. This thesis examines the rise of the Wittenberg printing industry and analyses how it overtook the Empire's leading print centres. Luther's controversy—and the publications it produced—attract

En utilisant une approche pluridisciplinaire à notre analyse, nous voulons promouvoir les objets comme acteur dominant dans la mise en scène de l’identité sociale du marchand au 16e siècle.
