In the early 1960s Mahler’s music became a vital stimulus for Henze’s compositional technique and aesthetics. Particularly important were its exploration of formal crises, the incorporation of ‘old’ musical materials, and its apparently direct expression of love and beauty. Yet, there are quite fruitful initiatives for dealing with musical phenomena from a psychoanalytical perspective, as this article tries to show with the example of the early music aesthetics of Hans Werner Henze. It began with a poignant announcement from the stage that Widmann had dedicated the performance in gratitude to the memory of his teacher, Hans Werner Henze, who had died that very morning in Dresden at the age of 86. Angesichts der großen Zahl von Aufführungsbelegen für BWV 199 in Bachs Weimarer, Köthener und frühen Leipziger Zeit nimmt es Wunder, dass ähnliche Hinweise zur Geschichte des Werkes in den späteren Leipziger Jahren und auch nach 1750 rar gesät sind. We prove that, for n odd, the p-torsion part of πq(Sn) has cardinality at most $p^{2^{{1}/({p-1})(q-n+3-2p)}}$ and hence has rank at most 21/(p−1)(q−n+3−2p). for p = 2, these results also hold for n even. The best bounds proven in the existing literature are $p^{2^{q-n+1}}$ and 2q−n+1, respectively, both due to Hans–Werner Henn. The main point of our result is therefore that the bound grows more slowly for larger primes. As a corollary of work of Henn, we obtain a similar result for the homotopy groups of a broader class of spaces.
