Full textWe here have chosen to focus on the musical culture of a sedentary people, the hausa, our subject being the development of their musical culture since 1960. A study of their music thus turns out a study of the many problems to do with the social roles and tasks or offices performed by the traditional musicians commonly called "griots". Following a brief look at the history and cultural background of the hausa, we have examined the roles and tasks of the griot. A good deal of attention has been devoted to the classification of musicians and the structuring of their world, i. E. The pattern of their relationships with each other (in terms of decorum, witchraft, professional emulation, applied musical medicine), their relationship with the population at large, their own apprenticeship, etc. . . The main part of this paper is given up to an exhautive enquiery into the various musical genres and instruments. Stress is laid on the profond changes which the roles and takes of musicians (mainly of course, the griots), as also musical practice, have undergone in the last 30 years. The alterations in the attitudes of the population or in the behaviour of the musicians themselves, the loss of prestige of the griot and devaluation of niger's musical heritage, have been carefully looked into, and an attempt has been made to assess the causes of this development

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to determine the constituent elements of the collective identity of the Hausa tradesmen and craftsmen settled in the Peul Kingdom of Garoua (Northern Cameroon), and also to determine the factors which have favoured, or on the contrary hindered, the integration of this community into the Garoua and "Grand-Nord" society, moreover into the Cameroonian nation. The study of the identity of the Hausa of Garoua requires the prior study of the Hausa people's identity, through its origins, heterogeneous, its founding myth, through to the social, political and economic organisation of the "Hausa land". The specific identity of the Hausa of Garoua and Northern Cameroon and consequently to their membership of a huge diaspora. The second part is devoted to the study of socio-cultural components of the Hausa identity, as revealed by the fieldwork, specially through the examination of the main patterns and poles of socialisation : the family, the professional guilds and the Muslim community. The last part opens with the presentation of the two geo-socio--politics spaces : Garoua and the "Grand-Nord" on the one hand, the Cameroonian nation on the other hand, within which the Huasa community had to become integrated. An integration that was successful in the first space, although within the limits set by the Peul aristocracy ; but difficult in the second space because of, at once, the state's partiality and the Hausa's reticence facing modernity values

Full textThis thesis is presented in three chapters. The first chapter is intitled : islam and the muslims in cameroun, the second is : the hausa and their family institutions and the third is : the hausa and their school institutions. The first chapter which is constitude of islam as tribal and ideological phenomena, the social classes the islamic institutions and the muslim connections, have permitted us to understand the following elements : islam in cameroun is a heritage of maghreb, means malikite, "maraboutic" and conferiric ; islam is in specific manner fied up to four principalmuslim tribes in cameroun : the bamus, the hausas, the kotokos and the fulanis ; the islamic percentage in cameroun is subject to many interior manipulations as well as exterior. In the second and third chapters, we have specifically studied the hausas and their family and school institutions, this have enabled us to observe their attachement to their tradition and to the arabo-islamic culture as well. It results from all mentioned that the socialisation system of hausa is not in favour to the national integration of this group. The hausa child obeys five systems of education : traditional, islamic in the coranic school, arabic in the franco-arab school, french in the franco-arab school or public school in adition to that of the street. This might explain in our opinion not only the weak participation of hausa children inpublic schools (primary and secondary), but the failure
