Abstract:
Three distinctly different undisturbed mature forested sites at the northern limits of the Carolinian forest system in Lambton County, Ontario, were examined to test the hypothesis that the abundance of each order of soil invertebrates captured is dependent on a unique set of soil properties, seasonal changes, and climate variations. Sixteen independent variables were recorded over five consecutive years. With the exception of rainfall, air temperature, and soil temperature, means of the measured variables differed significantly (P < 0.05) among soils. Twenty-eight taxa of invertebrates wer

Abstract:
Earthworms are key to the earth's ecosystem, which helps the soil increase its fertility and repair its existing elements, as well as remove contaminants. This study investigated the accumulation of Zn in the earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa after 15 days of exposure. The worms were grown in media with different concentrations of Zn between 750 and 1500 ppm. Each treatment consisted of three replicates, containing 30 worms. A control group without Zn was also used. Data were analyzed by using Duncan Multi–Range. The results revealed that A. caliginosa had a strong ability to accumulate Zn in

Fourteen taxa in three families are noted from regions of South America. Monopylephorus moleti (Tubificidae) and Haplotaxis aedeochaeta (Haplotaxidae) are new to science, while Potamothrix bavaricus (Tubificidae) and Phreodrilus lacustris (Phreodrilidae) are new records for the continent. The tubificids Isochaetides lacustris, Epirodrilus antipodum, and Paranadrilus descolei are redescribed. The report for Rhyacodrilus palustris from South Georgia is shown to be erroneous and should refer to Rhyacodrilus coccineus.
