Abstract:

Cheru, Tesfaye Gudeta. "Assessment of job satisfaction amongst physicians working in Public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia." University of the Western Cape, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/8220.

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Public Health - MPH<br>Introduction The Human Resource Strategic Plan of the Ethiopian Ministry of Health lists current health workforce problems as a high attrition rate among public service physicians, poor human resource management, non-conducive working conditions and high workloads. In Addis Ababa's public hospitals, the turnover of physicians is high and - as repeatedly and informally reported by hospital managers - the presence of the contributory factors listed above are also anecdotally thought to be present. These factors present a serious challenge to the delivery of high quality health care services and their presence indicates that the job satisfaction of physicians is likely to be low. However, factors responsible for job dissatisfaction among physicians and their implications for staff turnover have not been studied or documented in the context of Ethiopia's health system. It was this scenario that motivated the researcher to conduct this study in order to assist policy makers in taking appropriate actions, if and as required. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the level of job satisfaction, the factors influencing job satisfaction and the consequences of job satisfaction among physicians in public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Objectives: • To describe the job satisfaction levels of physicians in public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia • To identify factors affecting the job satisfaction levels of physicians • To assess possible consequences linked to physicians' job satisfaction levels. A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure job satisfaction, composed of 65 individual variables grouped within 13 dimensions and adapted to the Ethiopian context from the Job Descriptive Index and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. An additional questionnaire was used to assess socio-demographic variables and the possible consequences of low job satisfaction. Analysis: A composite job satisfaction score was obtained by summing the individual answers for each of the variables to assess overall job satisfaction. Bivariate analysis was undertaken, using 2X2 tables (with 95% confidence intervals) to calculate the prevalence ratio for each of the potential causes and consequences of low job satisfaction, using the composite score cut-off levels of job satisfaction. Multivariate analysis was undertaken to obtain the adjusted prevalence odds ratios for both the potential causes and consequences of low job satisfaction, using multiple logistic regression analysis.

Abstract:
China has among the world’s fastest growing urban region and faced enormous environmental and social challenges that requires a forward thinking of urban planning, which integrates environmental sustainability and social equity into urban resilience. In China, national and provincial urban policies have long focused on economic and industrial developments, whereas social welfare was not account for urban planning until very recently. After decades of rapid socioeconomic development, China has now entered an urbanization stage at which social development becomes as urgent as economic and environmental transformation. Rural migrant as a lower social group is a product of China’s rigorous rural-urban household registration (Hukou) that has caused plenty of social tragedies. Although governmental authorities have vowed to elevate rural migrants’ social status, as a heterogeneous social group, rural migrants received very little research attention by far. To examine rural migrants’ demographic information and their social status, this research employs happiness as a theme to carry out a questionnaire survey. In total, 1,267 responses were collected at bus and train stations in Changsha, a second-tier city located in the middle of China. According to the survey, rural migrants’ happiness status is in close relation with some demographic characteristics such as gender, ethnicity and education. In general, men are unhappier than women; the ethnic minorities are unhappier than the ethnic majority-Han; and the highly educated are unhappier than those with lower educational attainment. By performing a stepwise regression, statistics uncover that rural migrants’ happiness status in Changsha is positively associated with a stable income, a job with insurance and a well sustained family tie. Based on the study results, I propose three suggestions for social urban planning in China’s second-tier cities: (1) to set up a commercial district that embraces diverse ethnic groups, where the minor ethnic rural migrants can work and live with their own cultures. (2) To gather rural migrants by industry and establish labour unions that can represent for rural migrants’ interests. (3) To maintain the discriminated Hukou system, but define Hukou identity based on rural migrants’ taxation conditions.     Keywords: rural migrants, demographic characteristics, happiness factors, social urban planning

Abstract:
First-generation college (FGC) students represent a small portion of the population of students on college campuses across the nation. Racial minority students are also highly underrepresented at four-year institutions. When one combines FGC students who are also racial minorities, they comprise an even smaller subgroup of students attending four-year college campuses. Research conducted to evaluate how FGC students perform their first year in college is prevalent. Additionally, research has been completed on factors that help predict a high school student's admission into and performance in college. However, very little research exists about factors identified in high school that may help strengthen a prospective FGC, racial minority, and high school student's admission into college. This study will utilize the RELATE questionnaire to evaluate individual characteristics or circumstances identified in prospective first-generation college racial minority students that may be potentially mediated for by high school counselors or college administrators to help strengthen college or university admission. Counselors or advisors could have an impact on improving the likelihood of college or university admission for this population by facilitating the process of coming to terms with family stressors and/or strengthening their flexibility or adaptability to new or different environments, learning, and people. Since the RELATE database does not include direct data regarding college admission, positive student educational characteristics such as sociability, calmness, organization, maturity, and happiness will be utilized to represent potential stronger preparation for admission into college. RELATE is a questionnaire designed for individuals in a committed relationship and provides important information regarding the individual, the partner, and the relationship. Research with the RELATE questionnaire data is generally utilized in family and social science domains. This study is unique since it accesses the individual instead of couple data for positive educational characteristics and research. This comparative study between prospective first-generation college White students and prospective first-generation college racial minority students is designed to assist educators in secondary and higher educational levels to better prepare prospective FGC students, particularly prospective FGC racial minority students, for college admission. Also, this study will distinguish between various characteristics that may assist college recruiters identify prospective FGC students who may be a strong fit for their institutions.

Abstract:
Several studies have already reported that ministers are experiencing high levels of stress due to career demands, role conflict and personal situations (Roux, 1992:227; Scholtz, 1996:134; Kellerman, 2000:28). Stress is detrimental to general health and is the primary reason why ministers leave the ministry (Andrew, 1997:15, Virginia, 1998:50; Swart et al., 2000:339; Bisschoff & Schoeman, 2003:52). Research showed that regular physical activity and maintaining a good level of physical fitness has positive effects on physical and psycho-emotional health (Paffenbarger, 1994:860; Margetts et al., 1999:97; Botha, 200237; Fourie, 2002:7). In this respect, it became clear that participation in physical activity may decrease the risk of developing coronary heart disease and other illness through it's likely buffering effect against the negative effects of stress (Barlow et al., 1990:392; Bouchard & Despres, 1995:270; Stofan et al., 1998: 1808; Le Roux, 2000:59; Schlebusch, 2000:50). The objective of this study was firstly to determine interaction of physical activity on the relationship between coronary risk index and happiness and quality of life of South African Dutch Reformed ministers. Secondly, to determine the interaction of physical activity with coronary risk index in respect of years of service, congregation size, co ministership and congregation type, and thirdly, to study the interaction of physical activity with happiness and quality of life in respect of the last mentioned demographic parameters. The subjects were 340 male ministers of the Dutch reformed church, who volunteered to participate in the study. The quality of participation in physical activity was determined with Sharkey's (1997:432) physical activity index. The risk of developing coronary heart disease was determined by Bjurnstrom and Alexiou's (1978:524-525) coronary risk index assessment, while happiness or quality of life was measured by using the Affectometer 2 of Kammann and Flett (1983:259). The mean index of physical activity participation was 33.81 ± 32.30 which could be classified as fair, although 32.2% of the subjects fell in the low activity group. The coronary risk index showed that 19.9% of the population indicated a high risk of developing coronary artery disease, while 48.9% indicated a low level of happiness and quality of life. Significant (p10.05) relationships between physical activity, coronary risk index, happiness and quality of life were found among the high activity and low activity groups. Physical activity indicated a positive effect on the coronary risk index, independent of happiness and quality of life, as well as years of service, congregation size, co-ministership and congregation type. Physical activity also indicated a positive effect on happiness and quality of life, independent of years of service, congregation size, co-ministership and congregation type. In most cases physical activity also showed a significant interaction on the relationships between coronary risk index and years of service, congregation size, co-ministership and congregation type, as well as on the relationships between happiness and quality of life and the last mentioned demographic parameters. This study indicated that the ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church who participated in this study operated in a danger zone regarding their happiness and quality of life. Physical activity can be regarded as a salutogenic and preventative modality on the interaction of physical activity among the relationships between demographic factors, coronary risk index, happiness and quality of life of Dutch Reformed ministers. It was also concluded that physical activity can be regarded as a salutogenic modality in the physical and psychological wellness of South African ministers of religion.<br>Thesis (Ph.D. (Human Movement Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Abstract:

Chang, Pei-Chi, and 張珮琦. "demographic factors affecting happiness and the relations between happiness, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention." Thesis, 2008. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/tz3pze.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>人力資源管理研究所<br>96<br>The present study adopted the perspective of occupational health psychology, to explore demographic factors affecting happiness and the relations between happiness, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. Two databases were used: the Chinese Happiness Inventory (CHI) Project and the 2005 Taiwan Social Change Survey (TSCS). Both contain large scale, national samples. Results showed that females were happier than males, and younger people were happier than their older counterparts. Those who were currently married or single were both happier than those who were widowed or divorced. Highly educated people were happier than those who were less educated, and people with higher income were happier than those with lower income. Regression analyses were used to predict work-related variables, while controlling for the above demographic variables. Results showed that happiness significantly predicted job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. In other words, the happier the employees, the more likely that they were satisfied with their jobs, more committed to their organizations, and less likely that they would consider leaving the job. Among demographic variables, age and income were important predictors of work-related variables. Older employees, compared to younger ones, had higher organizational commitment and lower turnover intention. Employees with higher income enjoyed higher job satisfaction. Finally, competing causality models linking happiness and work-related variables were tested using the structural modeling technique. Results revealed that on the one hand, happiness led to higher job satisfaction and organizational commitment; on the other hand, higher job satisfaction fed back to higher happiness. Thus, these focal relations are likely to be reciprocal. The present study provided supporting evidence to the claim that employees’ happiness will not only affect their own welfare, but also have important effects on organization relevant outcomes.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北大學<br>統計學系<br>101<br>The activities people engage in are derived from the desire of happiness. To understand the factors impact Taiwan residents’ happiness, this research uses the data of happiness collected from the Taiwan residents born in 1935 to 1980 (27 to 72 year-old) through questionnaire survey of 2007 in Panel Study of Family Dynamics (PSFD). The impacts of basic personal status, marriage and spouse, family and economic, and living conditions on happiness index are discussed. Furthermore, proportional odds model is built to investigate impact on the happiness index. Findings from the one-to-one comparison between happiness and individual factors show that followings have higher degree of happiness: female, cohabiting and married (including remarriage) people, spouse with higher education, Taipei City, Yilan County, Hualien County and Taitung County residents, better health status of individual, spouse and parents, higher satisfaction of job and family life; people living with others are happier than those living alone, but those living with parents are contrarily unhappier; living with their spouse or their spouse’s parents; higher individual, spouse and family monthly income. Findings from the proportional odds model show that female are happier; in marital status, unmarried people are happier; Yilan County, Hualien County and Taitung County residents are happier than other regions; better health status of individual, spouse or father are happier; satisfaction of job and family life are directly proportional to the degree of happiness; the degree of happiness tends to increase through age and family monthly income; cohabiting, married (including remarriage), living with their spouse or their spouse’s parents are happier. In gender difference, male living in Yilan County, Hualien County and Taitung County are happier, and females living in Kaohsiung County, Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County are happier. Male's happiness is influenced by working conditions (including employment or not, working hours, income and job satisfaction), family and economic status. Female’s happiness is affected by marital status (happier if single) and living conditions (whether living with spouse, or spouse's parents).

Abstract:
博士<br>國立雲林科技大學<br>設計學研究所<br>107<br>In an increasingly competitive market, brand images must satisfy the spiritual needs of customers to earn their loyalty. Various philosophies and religions throughout human history have emphasized a sense of happiness. In Taiwan, the Directorate General of Budget also publishes an annual report on the happiness of Taiwanese citizens. Happiness is a life goal pursued by people worldwide and has a substantial effect on society and the economy. As an emotional marketing strategy used to create brand differentiation, happiness was a key factor that influences brand image. This study was divided into 4 phases. In the first phase, based on positive psychology and a literature review, it constructs a scale of happiness brand image according to the Modified Delphi Method. In the research process, it obtains four evaluation dimensions and 21 strategic indicators. In the second phase, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to rank the indicator strategy decision-making of items of the happiness brand image scale in order to recognize key factors of happiness brand image. The results indicated that the top factors regarding brand images were “intention of brand image to commit to and participate in Corporate Social Responsibility,” “environment friendly,” “brand image shows an impact on society,” “brand image is meaningful and shows goals for society”, and “brand image results in aesthetic affection”. In the third phase, analysis of the subjects by cluster analysis, and are classified into 4 types of consumer. In the final phase, based on the happiness brand image scale constructed in this study is used to measure the tea shop brands in Taiwan, and to check the practicality of the happiness brand image scale. By construction of the scale, strategy indicators of happiness brand image and 4 different types of consumers, this study argues that the originally-abstract concept of happiness can serve as a reference and provide a research contribution to academic and practical fields.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>公共事務管理研究所<br>103<br>Social enterprise, regarded as happiness economy, is a state of organization accompanying with socially general happiness through solving social problems. The main reason social enterprise is called happiness is social enterprise pays attention to social targets and commercial targets simultaneously. However, there are some running problems because dual targets are considered. Do such problems make employees unhappy? Or employees could make themselves happy while bring happiness to others. Such problems are what this research concerns about. Through questionnaire and interview, we inquire the subjective happy scale of employees, and other influencing factors such as social capital and job satisfaction. Besides comprehending if employees are happy, I am anxious to realize what the happiness-influencing factors are. By clarifying the influencing factors above, I hope to issue virtual results in order to contribute to the development on social enterprise. The research divides not only social capital into social network, social trust, altruism and social value but also job satisfaction into incentive factors and hygiene factors. Putting factors mentioned above into Pearson Correlation Analysis on subjective happiness of employees in social enterprise, we found out that there is a positive correlation between subjective happiness and social network, social trust, altruism, social value, job satisfaction, incentive factors and hygiene factors. The result shows that the higher the social capital is, the higher, the scale of subjective happiness is, and vice versa. But there is undifference between subjective happiness on enterprise and ONE WAY ANOVA of control group of general enterprise. During interview, interviewees indicate they still feel happy while working in social enterprise even in difficulty.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中華大學<br>科技管理學系碩士班<br>103<br>In recent years, many countries have included the happiness index rating list as an important issue, and Taiwan is no exception. Financial news agency Bloomberg News announced that Taiwan is the world’s fifth happy nation in the world. According to surveys conducted by economists, inflation and unemployment are the two major factors contributing to consumer unhappiness, thus the lower the misery index, the happier the country is. However, a great many people in Taiwan do not seem to agree. Over the years, issues targeting happiness have been discussed through surveys done by government sectors and private institutions. In addition, most thesis papers focus on specific groups and a few factors that have an influence on happiness, lacking integrity and comprehensive research. In this study, based on the viewpoint of system dynamics, three dynamic factors affecting Taiwanese people’s happiness were determined: satisfaction towards environment, degree of satisfaction towards personal needs, and degree of family harmony. From these three dimensions, driving factors were found, and the interacting factors were verified one by one to serve as the direction for the government’s efforts to enhance people’s happiness and the direction of personal efforts: 1. Satisfaction towards living environment: It refers to individuals’ degree of satisfaction towards the surrounding environment and software and hardware, through which eight driving factors were obtained through analysis, namely, traffic convenience, government welfare assistance, degree of all kinds of pollution, security, neighborhood harmony, average living floor area per capita, house prices, and budget constraints. 2. Degree of satisfaction towards personal needs: Personal needs are divided into two parts, through which four driving factors were obtained through analysis, namely, degree of personal efforts, interpersonal relationships, number of persons per household, and personal psychological needs. 3. Degree of family harmony: Whether or not family happiness affects all aspects of individuals’ performance was analyzed to obtain three driving factors, namely personal emotional management skills, family communication, and work load.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>資訊管理學研究所<br>106<br>More and more modes of E-commerce are emerging due to the fast-growing speed. Specifically, with the combination of the social media, like WeChat, Weibo and Facebook etc., social commerce platform has been gradually receiving more attention by the enterprises. In the past literature, we found that social factors such as social support and relationship quality significantly have positive impact on social commerce intention. Meanwhile, satisfaction and emotion included in the social factors both are the essential components of happiness. And as the fields of marketing and management spread, happiness which is an attitude is found to have significant importance on intention. Therefore, we examined the relationships between social factors (social support and relationship quality), happiness and social commerce intention on WeChat social commerce platform, and we proposed a more complete model. Our findings reveal that social factors and happiness will positively affect social commerce intention. Besides that, happiness will completely mediate the effect of relationship quality on social commerce intention, and effects of social support on social commerce intention is partially multiple mediated by relationship quality and happiness. The results not only confirm the fitness and robustness of our model, but also explain the importance of happiness and will provide better social commerce strategies for the entrepreneurs in the future business.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立成功大學<br>電機工程學系<br>104<br>The proposed research is different with previous happiness detection, the human action understanding system based on HAPPINESS factors is presented by using human action recognition to interpret happiness. Recognition and understanding of human behavior is a popular research topic and also a challenge in computer vision. With the aid of depth camera, such as Microsoft Kinect v2, information about human posture estimation can be acquired, and is used to form the HAPPINESS Factors Action Dataset, totally 27 actions are included. The proposed system composed of three modules, i.e., posture recognition, action recognition and happiness factors classification, respectively. The proposed system extracts the features of skeleton information for entire body and arms movement. The method of libSVM is then adopted for posture recognition. For action recognition, we applied the Dynamic Time Warping to compare the similarity between two actions. Furthermore, we propose a template selection method to speed up the action comparison, it selects suitable templates among different subjects within the same action, i.e., individual features may come from different subjects, and then selects representative template. Finally, the system classifies the corresponding HAPPINESS factors from the results of posture and action recognition. Experiments were performed on proposed HAPPINESS Factors Action Dataset and the results show that the accuracy of our posture and action recognition is 97.46% and 90.38%, respectively. The proposed method also achieves 96.3% action recognition rate on Kinect Activity Recognition Dataset, which confirm that the recognition accuracy of the proposed method is performing well in both datasets.

How to filter out bad influential information might be very challenged for students who are not very socialized. Furthermore, owing to few children in each family, parents may pay too much on the schoolwork and friends of their children. It is important to know whether the impact of too much attentions and too much information on the students is good. This research used data collected by Taiwan Youth project archived in Survey Research Data Archive. We chose data from the adolescent questionnaire for students in the senior high school and vocational school from Taipei city, Taipei county and Ilan county as the study sample. This study used a single question, “Overall, have you been happy recently?”, as the study response variable. The chi-square test was used to assess the relationship between this response variables and potential influential categorical factors. The relationship between the response variable and the continuous explanatory variables was assessed by the analysis of variance. The overall association between the response variables and explanatory variables was examined through the multicategory logit model. The result of the study shows that the potential influential factors for the level of happiness are different. Students, who have better grades, have better health and have better self-esteem, tend to be happier. However, students in the senior high school, who have moving experience; have a regular relationship, and have a good peers relationship, tend to live happy. On the contrary, students in the vocational school students tend to have a happier life if they were class cadre, don’t attend cram schools, have a better relationship with families, have no transferring experience to another school and have travelling experience to other countries. The finding of this research may give some guidance for parents, teachers and educational administrations when making educational policies.

Abstract:
碩士<br>大仁科技大學<br>文化創意產業研究所<br>106<br>After years of development in tourism factories around Taiwan, commodities with cultural and creative ideas have been highly developed. They can be found not only in the factories but also in the shopping malls across the country. Some are even sold to the rest of the world through online shopping platforms. During the government’s vigorous promotion of taking weekend off and people’s enthusiasm for tourism, tourism factories across Taiwan are struggling to attract consumers’ attention through new marketing strategies and unique operating styles in order to make tourists pay for the commodities. While visiting a tourism factory, we can see the shopping area in which cultural and creative products are displayed. Some even provide customer the opportunity to make their own creative works. In the process of visiting the factory, consumers can not only gain experiences, but also learn a lot of craft production knowledge from them. Moreover, they can also enhance the connection between friends and family. The “Xinglong Towel Tourism Factory” in Yunlin County was awarded the "Top Ten Taiwan Excellent Tourism Factories" by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2011. In 2014, it was awarded the “One Township-One Characteristic in Taiwan" Quality Enterprise Award. Its unique cultural and creative towels as well as the marketing strategies are widely praised by consumers. This study aims to explore the level of happiness that consumers can acquire from the DIY experience and mixed marketing strategies of the cultural and creative towels designed by “Xinlong Towel Tourism Factory”.
